As a drummer, Jeff, the drummer for TOTO, was a huge inspiration to me. He also played on MANY hit songs and albums. He died way too young. One of the highlights of my life was the night I got to see him perform with TOTO. The show was magical...
The drummer was the late Jeff Porcaro. He was also in Steely Dan for a time. He played on literally hundreds of hit records during that era. He was one of the most recorded session drummers in history. Check out his Wikipedia and look at the list of hits he played on. It is mind blowing. All of the Toto guys were in demand session players. Steve Lukather - guitar, David Paich - keys, Steve Porcaro - keys and Mike Porcaro - bass. It seems that every major hit in the late 70's and 80's had one or more Toto guys playing on it - Michael Jackson's Thriller album, Earth Wind and Fire, Lionel RItchie, etc. etc. They were absolutely amazing.
In a Jeff Porcaro interview he once said he never did a drum solo in a live concert. He said that was because his job was to keep time and nothing else. He was one of the best time keepers ever. The entire band was a more modern version of the Wrecking Crew studio session players in the 60's. The only Toto member I ever met was Luke and he was exactly like he is in every interview I've seen him in. Like he is talking to a friend.
What Jay and Amber probably don't know is several songs they have reacted to from other artists these guys played on. I just saw them live a month ago and they were fantastic!
Jeff Porcaro best session drummer and way ahead his time. Could play the most impossible drum parts that others struggled to play. He is greatly missed and gone way too soon.
Love this era of Toto. Their lead singer here is Joseph Williams and his father is the composer John Williams, so you have some interesting crossover with the movies.
@@thewarrior5486 In the Original version of Return of the Jedi (before the Special Editiions) the song Lapti Nek was played in Jabba's palace. Joe co-wrote that (though his lyrics were translated into Huttese) with John.
"I Won't Hold You Back" is my favorite song from Toto. Amber will absolutely LOVE it! I think Jay will, too. He has turned into a "beautiful ballad" lover. 😎
Just saw this group and Journey three weeks ago. Was a great concert. Although there weren’t to many original members left in either band you couldn’t tell. Still sounded great and definitely was worth it
Yes. I was hoping I wasn't the only one. It never got the airplay and exposure a lot of their other songs got. Agent 99 was a favorite growing up along with Mrs. Peel and Mary Ann.
According to former member Bobby Kimball, the song is indeed about that character. I met him at a festival in the 90s and asked him about it, and he confirmed that's who it was.
Your response to "Toto - Stop Loving You" resonates deeply with me, and sparks a flood of emotions and memories. To me, this song feels like a companion piece to "Toto - Pamela," each carrying its own poignant significance. Jeff Porcaro, the rhythmic genius behind the band, stands as a beacon among drummers of the 70s, 80s, and 90s in Los Angeles. His intuitive groove, impeccable timing, and signature shuffle are testaments to his unparalleled skill. His untimely passing in 1992 was a devastating loss to the music world, leaving behind a void that can never be filled. I imagine Jeff in heaven giving drum lessons to the Angels. Thank you, Rob and Amber, for acknowledging this song. If you're open to exploring more of Toto's repertoire, "Til The End" featuring Paula Abdul's choreography in the music video is a gem worth discovering. 🙂
Toto was the band that a lot of artists in the 80s had them featured on their albums. I miss those days of opening a cassette or cd to read the lyrics or artists who were featured on those albums. Great and best of times.
I just got to see these boys in concert, and they were AWESOME! Your next songs by them should be St. George & the Dragon, Hydra, or 99. If you want a new band, Dream Academy's Life in a Northern Town is BEAUTIFUL.
But please do the audio from the album. There is no official music video for I Won't Hold You Back, and none of the live versions, while good, capture the instrumentation on the album. It includes the London Philharmonic, for crying out loud.
Love Toto! I listened to them all day at work today! One of my favorites!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤. Toto definitely is one of those bands Amber!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤. One of my favorites is Hydra, and 99. But there are no bad Toto songs really!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
They are still so good! I saw them in concert almost 2 years ago and they still sound just like the studio albums. Both lead singers are still so very good!
the group had talented members that started playing as backups on many top songs because of their talents. they formed toto and the rest is history, a lot of great music. amber once again notes how good the drummer was!
Oh yay! Finally someone that chooses to react to my favorite Toto song❤️ I just loooove the rhytm in this song. R.I.P Jeff Porcaro. We are still down here dancing to your amazing drumming. Such a joy to watch him play too. What a talent. All of them are absolutely great but Jeff was just something else✨
Toto has been my favorite band since 1982, When the released Toto IV. As for further songs to follow up with, try Only You or All The Tears That Shine if you want a ballad, Kingdom Of Desire if you want to see their version of heavy metal or Great Expectations if you want something more experimental or proggy. It's ALL good. Toto just doesn't do anything bad. Great reaction!
Jay and Amber, excellent observation that notes and dynamics were "perfectly placed". The band complements the singer and "doesn't overpower". For the members of TOTO, the song is King, that is one of the key reasons they were called for so many sessions. They always did what was best for song. Along with the musicians of TOTO and the Wrecking Crew there was another collection of musicians known as 'The Section' (aka 'The Immediate Family'). Members of the Section are guitarist Danny Kortchmar, keyboardist Craig Doerge, bassist Leland Sklar, and drummer Russ Kunkel along with guitarist Waddy Wachtel and mult-instumentalist David Lindley. The Section worked with artists such as Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Phil Collins, Carole King, Stevie Nicks and Linda Ronstadt and others. 🎸😎
Love that ya'll are giving love to the late Jeff Porcaro....one of the best to ever do it. His groove and pocket and choice drum fills are simply the best. Thank you both to amazing reactions!! Love you guys and your channel!!
OMG! OMG! OMG! You guys did it! My favorite Toto song! And I'm a serious fan, so that's saying a lot. And you shouted out my absolute favorite thing about it. The late, great JEFF PORCARO!! Best drummer ever. I'm hardcore on that issue. As a session player, he played on thousands of tracks, many you already love. Just like the other members of the band. Jay, watch the video with your eyes open next time and keep them peeled on Jeff. Like Amber said, he was bashing the hell outta those skins and having a blast. The other great thing about this song is Joseph Williams. He's my favorite Toto singer (all due respect to Bobby Kimball). This band is made up of the best players in the biz. Toto is my favorite BAND of all time. The fact they aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame means the powers that be at the Hall up until now despised what the band is all about, especially the cancelled ex-head of the Rock Hall Jann Wenner. They absolutely deserve it and this Stop Loving You era of Toto was an incredible time for them. Just banger after banger after banger.
I agree, and TOTO did not get the appreciation they deserved, especially in the US, IDK why. I saw TOTO live in 2006 in Germany outdoors, a great concert.
I ask you many times, next time please do these super bangers from them "Angel don't cry" , "Endless" , "99" , "St.George & the dragon", "All us boys", "Stranger in town", & Gift with a golden gun"
The incomparable and truly amazing Jeff Porcaro on drums. Jeff played an many of sessions and many artists cite him as their favorite and most preferred drummer. The most missed drummer as he was taken way too early.
I forgot to mention... J and Amber, please check out a 4th different vocalist that was a short time member in Toto!! Freddie sings on a few songs but one tremendous song called *Carmen* on their album entitled *Isolation* which is an INCREDIBLE piece of work!! @RobSquadReactions
Toto is my favorite band since they came out with their debut album. "Stop Loving You" was from their album "The Seventh One" which is my favorite Toto album as their are so many good songs on it... Pamela, Anna, Straight For The Heart, Stay Away (featuring Linda Ronstadt on backing vocals), Mushanga, A Thousand Years, Only The Children (great guitar solo at the end), These Chains, and Home Of The Brave (their song about America). White Sister was their rock song from their 2nd album Hydra (2 awesome guitar solos by Steve Lukather). It's still frequently played during their concerts even now. If you want to hear an astounding drumming performance by Jeff Porcaro, watch their video for Goodbye Elinore from their 3rd album Turn Back... They are touring with Journey for part of this year.... Peace!
Love this time in music. This is definitely a fave.. this tune also reminds me of sone that I hope you react to soon: "Don't Shed A Tear" by Paul Carrack and Chicago's "Stay The Night".
I have a song you never covered, The Easybeats "Friday on my mind" George Young the oldest Brother of Angus and Malcom young was one of the Guitarists. he helped get AC-DC going. They remind me a little of the Beatles.
Drummer Jeff Porcar and Bs player, his younger brother Mike Porcaro are both gone! There middlebrother Sveve is still with us, Their father Joe Porcaro was a famoius percussionist and together they have done sooooo much recordings with such artists like Steely Dan, Bruce Springsteen, George Benson, Nik Kershaw, Tommy Bolin, Larry Carlton, Eric Carmen, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Christopher Cross, Andrew Gold, Miles Davis, Dire Straits, Donald Fagen, Stan Getz, David Gilmour, James Newton Howard, Al Jarreau, Elton John, Leo Sayer and many many more. Jef is one of the most recorded drummer so check him out !
Joseph Williams, the guy singing this song is the son of the great John Williams who scored the music for films such as Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jaws, Superman and many other great films.
Fun fact! The scat singer in the bridge is the great Jon Anderson from yes!! And James pankow (trombonist) from Chicago performed and arranged the horns on this tune!!
And the members of Toto reciprocated. Jon was recording his solo album In The City Of Angels at the same time and they appeared on several tracks on his album.
This song is fire. Toto is one of the best bands of all time, great musicians, excellent voices and excellent songs, I would recommend not so well-known songs, one of my favorites is The Road Goes On.
Jay and Amber, I know you love really big sounds. May I suggest you listen to All I Need Is A Miracle (extended version) by Mike + The Mechanics? I think you'll be blown away.
The drummer is Jeff Porcaro, he died a long time ago already and he also played for Boz Scaggs on the song 'What Can I Say'(1977) and that's a great song worth listening/reacting to, especially the live performance with some members of the Doobie Brothers, it's awesome!
Please check out TOTO "I will remember you" and keep in mind, they have 40 years of albums... and after 1988, very few reactions... so yeah... btw, this is why I subscribed. For something different, try "unknown soldier" and "great expectations" or "Kingdom of Desire"
this takes back to a time where you could leave the radio on all day and great songs like would all day and night i forgot how this group is great there are.
Kind of like birthdays when you get older. We call it B-Day week or month because that's how long it takes to drink what you drank on your actual B-Day when you turned 21. Now you have to listen to music for a week to get the number of great songs you got in one day back then.
I'm hoping I can convince Amber and J to go DEEP into the Toto jungle and hit *Drag Him To The Roof* as their next reaction adventure!! 😁😉 @RobSquadReactions
Love, love, love this band. The drummer, Jeff Porcaro, is one of the most respected drummers there has ever been, especially in the session world. Much missed. Great song, and I veer between this and Rosanna was my favourite.
Jeff was a major talent and a big influence on this drummer over the decades His timing was impeccable & staying in the pocket ,playing to the song , not being overly busy, bringing that jazz influences. Few drummers come to my mine with that grove Steve Gadd , Jeff Campitelli , Billy Cobham , Vinnie Colaiuta. Anyway yeah , your correct Jeff was damn good 👍
First, I just wanted to say thank you for reacting to Toto’s music. They’ve been my favorite band since I first heard them at the age of 14 when a school friend let me borrow their debut album back in 1978. I did get the opportunity to see them play live when drummer Jeff Porcaro was still with us (and five more shows after his death). I was also very lucky to meet him after one concert and before another show. He was just the most humble, nicest guy you’d ever want to meet. Especially since he was one of my musical heroes. Since you mentioned you enjoyed Jeff’s drumming here are a few songs I would recommend listening to from the remastered albums if possible: “You Are the Flower” (1978) - from their debut Album Toto. Lead vocals by original lead singer Bobby Kimball. “Hydra” (1979) - from their second album Hydra. This is their most Prog/Rock sounding tune. It also is very cinematic and has a very “BIG” sound and arrangement. Lead vocals by keyboardist David Paich. “Mama” (1979) - also from Hydra. Lead vocals by Bobby Kimball. This is a song where Jeff is playing his famous shuffle groove. Speaking of which, Jeff was the drummer on the Michael McDonald song “I Keep Forgettin’”. “Waiting For Your Love” (1982) - from the album Toto IV. Very nice dance groove. Lead vocals by Bobby Kimball. “Till The End” (1986) - from their Fahrenheit album. Joseph Williams, who also was lead vocals on “Stop Loving You”, shines bright here as well. “Somewhere Tonight” (1986) - also from Fahrenheit. It has a reggae feel to it. Lead vocals by Joseph Williams. “These Chains” (1988) - From the Seventh One album. Another shuffle tune from Jeff. Lead vocals by guitarist Steve Lukather.
I've been watching music reaction videos since about the time we went into shut down mode in 2020 and out of all the channels I have seen your channel is still the absolute only one I am subscribed to and I think you two should be at least at the 1 Million Sub mark and I hope you get there. You have covered quite a few era's and you genuinely seem to appreciate well over 90% of what you hear so you have been very open minded. Imagine where you would have been had you not opened up to the past music. I'm not even sure any other channel does more than 1 video per week let alone 3 per day. Keep up the awesome job. I remember a radio station in the '70's Los Angeles area called KJLH which stood for Kindness, Joy, Love & Happiness and that is what your channel reminds me of.
They are ALL session musicians. At the top of their instrument. The lead guitar and vocals of Steve Lucather is impeccable. He has played on more than 1500 records. Fro Barbara Streisand to Michael Jackson. As far as guitar greats, he should be sharing the spotlight with Eddie van Halen. Those two were great friends. Toto as a whole puts them as my most favorite band of all time.

Jon Anderson from Yes did backing vocals on this song, which is most noticeable during that breakdown in the middle.
I've said it before, but I'll say it again...Toto never misses!

This is one of my favourite Toto songs. Just so cool.
I agree, and TOTO did not get the appreciation they deserved, especially in the US, IDK why. I saw TOTO live in 2006 in Germany outdoors, a great concert.
Top notch instrumentation in this one!
Oof those hairstyles..lol like looking back in my high school yearbook. didnt remember this song though so fun memories
I won't hold you back,😅 and ill be over you 2 by Toto well worth a review 🔥🔥🔥🔥
They did I’ll Be Over You last year 👍🏻
Been awhile since I have been able to check in here.. Love the Blue T-Shirt & It's Message !!!! ~~~
Jeff Porcaro was one of the greatest drummers ever. Gone far too soon at age 38 in 1992. It always chokes me up a bit to see him.
Another good toto song is till the end
I ask you many times, next time please do these super bangers from them "Angel don't cry" , "Endless" , "99" , "St.George & the dragon", "All us boys", "Stranger in town", & Gift with a golden gun"
Jeff Porcaro was an absolute monster drummer. You guys would be shocked how many songs from other artists you've done where he is on the drums.
You can’t go wrong with Toto. Try Carmen or Lion or Angel don’t cry for yet a new lead singer. But the same awesome drummer.
One Toto song you don't wanna miss is "Stranger In Town" with the earlier singer from the "Africa" days.
eh, almost. It's Fergie Fredriksen (R.I.P.) on that one. His only album (Isolation) with Toto.
@RobSquadReactions
This from The Seventh One, It was released in 1988.
Love this album
You and me both. It was my senior year in high school. Deserved far more airplay!
Peace!
"Straight For the Heart" is pretty good.
When Toto plays, other musicians look like padawans
Girl Goodbye, one of their best. I believe it was Bobby Kimball on vocals when the song first came out. Worth a listen.
I love David Paich's new song Will I Belong To You? Absolutely amazing and as good as anything from 80's Toto.
Fun fact! The scat singer in the bridge is the great Jon Anderson from yes!! And James pankow (trombonist) from Chicago performed and arranged the horns on this tune!!
My favorites song from Toto Is there song Stranger In Town it's a pretty good song I think you would like it a lot
Toto is responsible for most late 70,80 & 90 top 10 hits for many artist The thriller album is literally MJ & Toto
5:55 A fun fact. Jon Anderson. Former lead singer of the band Yes, is the one singing in the background.
And the members of Toto reciprocated. Jon was recording his solo album In The City Of Angels at the same time and they appeared on several tracks on his album.
Just saw them live and they are still amazing! Hope you guys react more… so many great tracks and deep cuts
This song is fire. Toto is one of the best bands of all time, great musicians, excellent voices and excellent songs, I would recommend not so well-known songs, one of my favorites is The Road Goes On.
My favorite Toto videos are their Paris 1990 live versions of "I'll Be Over You" (amazing guitar solo outro) and "Georgy Porgy".
Jay and Amber, I know you love really big sounds. May I suggest you listen to All I Need Is A Miracle (extended version) by Mike + The Mechanics? I think you'll be blown away.
Home of the Brave, Angel Don't Cry, Mr. friendly, Don't Chain my heart, Goin'Home, the list of great Toto songs is very long
The drummer is Jeff Porcaro, he died a long time ago already and he also played for Boz Scaggs on the song 'What Can I Say'(1977) and that's a great song worth listening/reacting to, especially the live performance with some members of the Doobie Brothers, it's awesome!
He played the drums on Lido Shuffle by Boz Scaggs, a banger song from the 70s
One of my favourite Toto songs ever! I LOVE IT! GREAT REACTION, GUYS!
Please check out TOTO "I will remember you" and keep in mind, they have 40 years of albums... and after 1988, very few reactions... so yeah... btw, this is why I subscribed.
For something different, try "unknown soldier" and "great expectations" or "Kingdom of Desire"
Great song. As is the case with many bands, even better live!
this takes back to a time where you could leave the radio on all day and great songs like would all day and night i forgot how this group is great there are.
Kind of like birthdays when you get older. We call it B-Day week or month because that's how long it takes to drink what you drank on your actual B-Day when you turned 21. Now you have to listen to music for a week to get the number of great songs you got in one day back then.
Why do you spam the spacebar between words?
Rip Jeff porcaro! Love Toto!
Although you may not know it, you've heard the drummer before on at least a 100 songs you know very well. The man was a legendary studio drummer!
I'm hoping I can convince Amber and J to go DEEP into the Toto jungle and hit *Drag Him To The Roof* as their next reaction adventure!! 😁😉
@RobSquadReactions
Thank you guys for playing my favorite song!
Love, love, love this band. The drummer, Jeff Porcaro, is one of the most respected drummers there has ever been, especially in the session world. Much missed. Great song, and I veer between this and Rosanna was my favourite.
He is well recognized just as much as Neil Peart and Keith Moon are recognized.
Since you mentioned you enjoyed Jeff’s drumming here are a few songs I would recommend listening to from the remastered albums if possible:
“You Are the Flower” (1978) - from their debut Album Toto.
Please try I won’t hold you back
