Literally the studio musicians that did MJ's thriller album. Steve Lukather on guitar. He's got great pipes too! His solo on this tune is one of my favorite. Bobby Kimball on lead vox. Yes, Jeff on drums, his brother on bass. You and I need to sit out by the fire, listen to tunes and imbibe!!
Jeff was the heart and soul of the group before his untimely passing. Steve Lukather is an under appreciated guitarist. Most people dont kno his name but have heard him on so many songs (both toto and as a studio musician).
The lead singer is Bobby Kimball, a very underrated vocalist. If you want to check out a different side to Toto's sound, try "Georgy Porgy." It's got a smooth R&B vibe to it.
That is Jeff Porcaro on drums and Steve Lukather on guitar. Jeff Porcaro was also with also with Billy Joel while Brian Setzer was also in his band. Amazing. Toto started as session musicians at a studio.
They were a collection of top-notch studio musicians who got together and created their own band. Steve Lukather on lead guitar, who has played with a lot of people and played the other guitar parts on Michael Jackson’s Beat It (while EVH played the solo) I had this on a 45 when it was new.
A band with a bunch of stellar musicians, people who had played with other famous musicians, that came together to form this awesome group. I see people have listed some of their major hits. A truly awesome and talented group of musicians.
Toto always brings it! You should check out some live performances also, they are so tight it's incredible. Loved this, you've been making me tune in to the drums so much, now my brain is automatically focusing on that all the time, I'm hearing songs I know, in a different way. Love it!✌❤
I will listen to this one every time from every reactor just to be amazed by Jeff Porcaro's drumming . Yes That Foot pedal on the bass drum is sick ! That's why I'll listen to this from different reactors , to see if they pick up on that ..... That is all . carry on 🙂
Now you need to submit a reaction video to the song "AFRICA"; the third most listened to song (from the 70s, 80s and 90s) in the U.K. A masterpiece of its kind. Thank you, Steven.
I really enjoy your reactions! This came out in Sept. 1978. I had graduated that June & was two months away from turning 19. What memories these songs bring back! They really don't make them like this any more. 😥
Steven you know it's the studio ace on drums Jeff Porcaro...can play anything, any genre...been on dozens of radio hits from many different bands. He was one of top 5 drummers of the 70's/early 80's until his untimely death.
Toto started in the late 70's & has been performing for over 40 years now. They mix all types of genres in their sound. They have had some great hits such as "Africa", "Rosanna", "I'll Supply The Love", "Georgy Porgy", "99", "Make Believe", "Stranger In Town", "I'll Be Over You", "Without Your Love", "Stop Loving You", "Pamela" etc.
I love Steve Lukather's solo. This time concentrated on just the kick drum. Geez, Jeff was in my books at the pinnacle of great drummers. He was incredible to watch.🤘😎❤
Jeff Porcaro was inspired by John Bonham and Bernard Purdie, so if something he does sounds "Bohnham-esque" that's why. He plays on "Lowdown" by Boz Skaggs if you haven't reacted to that one already it's got a great groove.
Bobby Kimball is the singer. The first of many as it would turn out, but my personal favorite. Luke is a criminally underrated player and Jeff Porcaro was a legend on Drums , R.I.P. Great review, especially picking up on the jazz elements within the song.
You'd be amazed at how many artists have used these guys on their albums! These guys, individually, have been on thousands of albums. Steve Lukather has been one of the most sought-after guitarists in the music industry. One of the most popular albums he's played on was Michael Jackson's Thriller album. Their keyboard player was also on the album and actually wrote Human Nature. It's one of the biggest travesties that Toto isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
Yes that is Jeff Porcaro, and the guitarist is :Steve Lukather. Lukather is also an accomplished session ace and was a close friend of Eddie Van Halen dating back to the beginning of Van Halen's career.
David Paich, on piano, keyboards and vocals; Steve Lukather, guitar and vocals; Jeff Porcaro on drums; David Hungate on bass and keyboards and Bobby Kimball on vocals; after Porcaro's death in 1992, Simon Phillips was on drums for 20 years and Mike Porcaro on bass after David Hungate left; it was also common for Steve Porcaro to participate on keyboards.
Dive head first into the Toto rabbithole Steve, you will find lots and lots of true musicall awesome gems. You will ❤ it.I saw them live 7 times, just freaking AWESOME.
Toto: Bobby Kimball - lead and backing vocals Steve Lukather - electric guitars, backing vocals Steve Porcaro - keyboards David Paich - piano, backing vocals David Hungate - bass Jeff Porcaro - drums Lenny Castro - percussion
Hey dude! Was never a huge fan of the band, but for some reason this song has been irresistible to me since 1978. Whenever it's on, the radio flipping stops. They can keep all that other stuff, but this one lives forever!
Saw Toto open for Journey recently. The crowd really only knew 3 songs, they played at the end of the concert, but these 3 sounds especially “Hold the Line” sounded outstanding. The crowd loved the end; singing, dancing, having a great time. They saved the best, Hold the Line for their last song. They completely blew Journey away BTW!!
Beautiful reaction. One question: what do Simon Phillips, Vinnie Colaiuta, Keith Carlock, Greg Bissonette, Shannon Forrest and Robert "Sput" Searight have in common? Toto of course. A slightly strange thing that I want to remember reading: On Kingdom of Desire, the song Gypsy train, Tommy Lee is supposed to have played double drums with Porcaro. It doesn't seem to have worked, the official version only has Porcaro. If anyone knows more about this, please write what you know. And if you know Lee didn't play, write about that too.
In addition to their own songs, they were prolific studio musicians. They played on over 5000 albums with sales over half a billion copies, including Michael Jackson's "Thriller"
Be sure to check out the official video for their song Stop Loving You. Drummer Jeff Porcaro is having so much fun in the video and the song is sooooo good!

Yep, a lot of us who actually lived through the decade think so too. We were spoiled big time...
