Recorded at Caius College on November 22, 2021.
Dr. Peterson recently traveled to the UK for a series of lectures at the highly esteemed Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. This was the Q&A after the first of said lectures.
After some remarks on Cambridge’s beauty and rich history, Dr. Peterson examines the significance and history of clinical psychology. Drawing from the likes of Carl Rogers, Freud, Maslow, and Jung, this lecture investigates free speech, the value of structure, ways to approach mental illness, Jordan’s clinical experience, active listening, relationships, and the golden rule for conflict management.

@@josephgold208 sorry but I think you're wrong, he didn't continue because he was clearly choked up by that simple but unsaid thought "wouldn't it be amazing if everyone's actions were guided by love and thier words guided by truth" - because this simple phrase is what Jordan has been striving for for most of his life, and now in recent years striving to get that message out to others before it's too late.

Dr Peterson is one of the few people who can combine evolutionary biology, philosophy, literature, clinical psychology, religion, and spirituality in a meaningful way that preserves and honors the contributions of each. Profoundly beautiful talk at the deepest level.
Excellent observation.
Well said I appreciate your comment, it made me think more deeply about Jordan Peterson if that was even possible LOL
Peterson preserves and honors such intellectual contributions as much as a sausage-maker preserves and honors their ingredients.
@@futurememories1660 If it still taste good, he must have succeeded! As horrific as the process of sausage making may be,.. we still choose to eat it because it's enjoyable.
@@davidhunt7427 And therein lies the problem.
Not only does he answer a question, but he gives an answer that is more than we knew that we were asking for.
he's so smart. the first question & answer.... he should work in government, as an advisor.
@@johnd3124 I respect Dr. Peterson so much, but there is no shot in hell any government would take him. He is too wise, and arguably too critical
What a beautiful line. "You should be afraid of contaminating your soul with deceit."
It’s interesting because I felt a bit conflicted lately about spending too much time listening to his lectures. I mean, I could use the stimulation intellectually speaking. Just feel a bit troubled about being yet another person placing him on a pedestal. Getting swept up with everyone else singing his praises sorta thing. Albeit I’m sure he worked tirelessly for the adulation he receives. I don’t have any real reason to be hypercritical of JP. In some ways I feel as though I may diminish the ability of others I listen to consequently creating fuel for rivalry. Leading to jealousy and a culture of combative comparative rhetoric. Essentially, I’m here for me and not because of some inadequacy at another podcast.
@@the2ndcoming135 One can appreciate JP's remarkable intellectual output while recognising some of its limitations. He attempts to extricate us from the confusion that reigns in the Western world today due to the materialistic ideology of the left that unduly dominates its cultural landscape.
@@rareword yeah, I noticed that. Part of the reason why I hang around, yet limit my interaction in the comments. I have my own personal criticisms along the same lines. I would imagine that most of us here, from what I’ve observed through comments, is because we’re mostly in agreement with Dr. Peterson. To whatever degree or extent we’ve aligned ourselves with his train of thought. It’s come to my attention that this is one of the few podcasts of which there isn’t an excessive amount of focus on the back and forth of clashing ideas or ideology.
A very true quote. I’ve found that even when I tell a small lie for the sake of keeping the peace, it feels like a piece of myself has crumbled away. It’s an awful feeling.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When a slave commits a sin, a black spot appears on his heart. But if he give it up, seeks forgiveness and repents, his heart will be cleansed, but if he repeats it, (the blackness) will increase until it overwhelms his heart.

This is 5 months old too.
I was thinking the same thing
@@kaivogel253 Based on your comments, I have realized:
-You are stupid.
-You have high time preference; you waste 10x more time than I have on this comment every day, debating in vain of your ideas.
-If your ideas were good, you would start a blog or a UA-cam channel on your own, instead of leeching off a channel with millions of subscribers
-If this is an elaborate troll it has satisfied others more than yourself, as your morale has been crushed by other commenters debating you, whether you admit it or not. After the smoke clears, it is others who have moved on, laughing at your absurd troll idea, while your committed troll has done nothing good for anyone, even yourself, as others have derived more pleasure from mocking you, and this pleasure is greater than yours, as it yours comes from nowhere of integrity.
Your motives:
-Are not to inform or enlighten anyone of your ideas, not engage in honest debate
-You try to bait people into arguments (such as these) and once people reject your fallacious premises you use clown foolery to take heat off, and dance around counterarguments instead of confronting them (because you can't)
-You are a troll and you gain happiness with a (false) feeling of moral superiority over others with more intellect and testosterone than you.
My predictions:
-You will childishly claim victory in this argument
-Even if you "really" won the argument because your idea is some groundbreaking genius, you will never implement it, and you will die with an even inferior legacy than those who you have "beaten" in an argument.
-You will continue only listening to other statist grifters such as yourself, and never leave your religion
-You may change and realize how foolish you are, but your intellectual redemption will not be due to critical thinking, but due to the expression of shame that you have delayed hitherto.

Wonderful comment. Just remember his point that to become a master, you must be willing to be the fool. Everyone working somewhere had a first day. Even when it’s a new job but one is experienced? Familiarity lends to confidence very quickly. On the second day, there’s basic knowledge and orientation that’s comforting.

I've read a piece on classical music, on that the pleasure of the non monotonous, the surprise of the unexpected turn of the music is what brings pleasure to the listener with the logic. Well listening to Peterson speak has a very similar for me anyway.
One of the things I enjoy too. The parlance combined with common sense approaches but with expert knowledge so it isn’t generic, lip service.
When he answered the question about "the soul," I immediately thought of the massive amount of emotion that good music can evoke. Whether a person is religious or atheistic, it pretty hard to deny the existence of something akin to what we call the soul when you listen to an amazing piece of music.

It really makes you wonder what Cambridge was afraid of all along. This bastion of human kindness is a positive influence wherever he speaks.
JP is looking sharper then ever here.. brings me joy seeing that considering what he has been through in the past few years..
It only takes one brilliant man like this to finally make people stop and actually think about how they view others and the world around them. The most important lesson I take from his talks is listening to others to understand their view points even if you don’t agree with them. I never went to university and if someone like myself can take such a key idea from his talks why is it so many with higher education refuse to do so also or even entertain the idea. I wonder at times whos more educated in the world
Because the matter you are referring to has more to with one's character, not one's education. I'm with you, high school graduate, and in my 40s, and it has been divine intervention and decades of failures to finally realize stuff like unhealthy pride, personal responsibility, humility, love and respect, etc...
How can you make the whole argument like that and finish it with such a pearl : Your actions are guided by love and your words are guided by truth. And to make it even better the argument was about incredible feats that make people stand up and cheer and this one sentence gripped everyone so hard that they stood up and cheered! Its like a self fulfilling truth. amazing, sharp and really well thought through answers told like stories to viking brothers by the fire. How can you not love this or at least enjoy it.
I think many young people are still 'foibling' their way through the process of cynicism. Hopefully they save most of that until they are far older.
How can I not love this? Because I know better than you. The rascal is a mercenary monster...using concepts and ideas already thought of by hundreds of others and written into books authored by them (most of them dead now, and ironically most of these dead ones are basically from "The Left" Jordan actively despises!) and palming them off on you gullible fools as "original thinking" of his. Funny how he's made his fortune off of empty headed nitwits on "The Right" in search of answers and "Holy Grails" with out a ghost of a clue as to who's actually right or wrong on whatever is said by anyone.
@PabloMaster great observation! Adds another layer of depth to what was already a compelling show

The one thing I truly appreciate above all else is that what Dr. Peterson is providing in these lectures, q&a's, and podcasts, is essentially information/knowledge gathered not just during his own life experience but others as well, many thousands if not trillions of other lives lived during the totality of human existence. That is something to be truly appreciated and learned. The fact that he is providing this information"free of charge" by his own means is what used to be an exclusivity to those that seeked knowledge in these realms of tuition that would otherwise be unavailable to the masses is very special. I only wish more of the world could see, hear and appreciate the knowledge he has to share the same way I do.
There's only been 117 billion people to ever exist, unless there are other planets full we don't know about. Just a fact check there sir
Maybe scale back on the trillions. Theres a lot of us buggers, but we don't multiply like insects.
Please stop sucking JBP off so hard, his opinions are contradicted by the life experience of those who disagree with him. Props to the man at the who acknowledged Jordan's graciousness to come to Cambridge after how the institution treated him. Jordan could've easily said screw you to Cambridge and take his business elsewhere.
I listen to a church talk that encouraged making positive sincere comments at home. I did this with my mom, praising her for making my favorite meal and making a big deal (Note: This was an honest expression, not a fake one. She was really a good cook!). So considering after all the years we took her cooking for granted, boy, did she light up and appreciate this complement, and afterward talked excitedly about how she appreciated it. Little things can make positive differences in the home, as Peterson says.
The answer to the question about the protection of freedom of speech and conservatism at 50:12 is one of the best answers I've ever heard. Bloody good job explaining the importance of protection with the implementation of change using the stories of Egyptian Gods. Pure brilliance.
jordan peterson saved my life, not from suicide, which im phisically incapable to do. But from Life itself. From the despair that is only possible in life. And that, to me, is even more valuable than preventing death. Cause like he said, death is nothing compared to the absolute despair of life. Thats something saving people from.
He gave me the tools of real empowerment, not that bland nonsense that 'feminism' promised me. He made me realize, although he did say it himself once, but i came to it indipendently too (exactly like he said in this q&a! it works best if you come to it by yourself, sticks better), that "responsability = power".
We often hear it the other way around "power= responsability" but never its way forward "responsability = power", which is MUCH more powerful.
Because one power gives you many responsabilities, and thats a burden, but even just one responsability gives you all the power you psychologically need to face life (and to take on more responsabilities), and thats FREEDOM, from the shackles of helplessness and despair.
It literally gives in your hand a wrench, and now you can turn every bolt you come across until the end of time.
And now you can, and feel the respnsability to (after all youre the guy with the wrench!) tighten or untighten all the bolts you come across, depending on whats needed. Thats real power, thats real difference.
And now, you have the freedom to tighten your own bolts, and maybe fix that damn car you need to go around. And now youre free to go around! And that gives you the freedom to buy more groceries with one trip, and you can offer to bring the kids to soccer every week, and voilà! now you have a clique of people you can call friends, even if its just the soccermoms you helped. It only snowballs from there.
Thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Hello … I’ve made the journey from Atheist .. to Agnostic .. To Bahai .. To New Age and finally to a follower of Jesus ( not a Religion ) …. When I was an atheist I had a series of traumatic personal experiences that made me reevaluate my view of myself / purpose / meaning / reality … etc etc. To make this very long story short I have arrived at an understanding where what I believe to be truth has become self evident. So I proved to and for myself that God exists. So what logically would follow would be ascertaining what was the reason I was created. “Who am I, where did I come from and why am I here” … as it has been expressed as many times by the seeker. I posit that the search for these answers are the root of “belief’ and its important not to confuse the spiritual quest with the blind acceptance of the manipulated, controlled and diabolically twisted interpretations, dogma and mind control spewed by the man made institutionalized religions. Its easy to prove God exists …. Our own minds and thoughts/dreams prove the existence of a non material realm sovereign to matter. As the effect cannot be greater than the cause … ( a painting cannot create the painter, a table cannot create the carpenter ) therefore our minds cannot have originated or arisen from matter. And as the table proves the existence of the carpenter .. our minds having not being created by us .. prove the existence of a greater mind/realm that is the cause of our minds. .. That would be God and the Spiritual Realm. Your mind proves God, soul and Spirit. Shalom and good luck on your Journey …
LOVE IS THE CREATIVE POWER.

All religions and beliefs are an attempt to explain what the invisible aspects of reality are. There is a big problem with how we have been attempting to do so. Majority of human kind only experience 1% or less of actual reality. With the 1% that is understood, we have "language" to describe it. Here is where the problem lies. There isn't a human language to describe the other 99%...
for those that do experience more than the average 1% they attempt to use human language to explain more, which ultimately turns into mythology or religion for the average mind...
What a Q&A. It's such a crazy opportunity to tune into these levels of discussion. It really was a treat to see the utilization of abstract concepts - but I guess decades of dialectic discourse gets you there. Great audience as well.
This is peak competency and judicious qualification. Hats off to Dr. Peterson.
It’s always great to listen to Jordan transform a Q and A into a lecture.
@@kaivogel253 we will have to agree to disagree on that.
@@alexanderlintott4286 Can't help but notice how this person replying to you immediately resorts to petty playground insults when you civilly express disagreement. Sad commentary.

You can feel the love and hope this man is willing to give to humanity leaving his body coming through the T.V. straight to my heart.
Cannot get enough of his wisdom ✨️ 👑
Treasure to humanity.. that's what this man is. I've re-watched this four times and I find myself exploring different thought spectrum each time all over.
We need more people like Dr. Peterson in this world.
people just gotta read a lot a Jung and Nietzsche and love to talk haha

You saved my dads life thank you

Wow this man. I watch him and listen like a great film. Spellbound and in awe. Learning, growing and becoming wiser with every word. He is a true gift to mankind although to those who do not love the truth he is a curse. My week is unfulfilled without at least 4 hours spent with Jordan and now even his daughter and wife step up to the plate and I listen to them also. A true vessel of Jehovah whether he knows it or not. A true blessing to us all whether we know it or not. There are not many truly great men. But he is for sure one and he will have a high seat in the kingdom of God that is for sure.
I can understand that people would disagree with him but how any one could dislike or even hate him is simply beyond my comprehension.
I will never tire of listing to him, I don't always fully understand and occasionally don't agree but his manner and delivery are an absolute joy to behold.
@@casteretpollux point me in the direction of your scholarly work so that I can evaluate your opinion.
The fact you ask that shows that you haven’t read my opening post.

@@casteretpollux Again you show your lack of comprehension with that post, but I am not surprised by that.
@Cass you're miss reading the comment.
They didn't say the enjoyed being befuddled or confused. They said they enjoyed listening to Peterson "even if they can't ALWAYS understand". That doesn't imply they enjoy being confused. It implies that they're occupying the right place of learning.
If you're at a spot where you understand let's say 80% but 20% is too hard for you, then you're at the edge of your ability. That's good. That's how you advance your ability. You're in a place where you can still push yourself and grow.

I've been listening to Dr Peterson for years now and I am still amazed at the depth and breadth of his knowledge and his ability to convey it.
have you also seen him struggle with simple philosophical concepts in his conversations with Harris and Zizec? It surprises me that peope still consider Peterson "smart", eventhough it is obvious how emotionally and ideologically charged his takes are...
@@karimshebeika8010 so you listened to that whole lecture and your take away is that he is not "smart" and that he is "ideological"? I guess we were listening to something completely different.
Watching content like this gives me hope for us, and the internet. Thank you JP
I had to listen to that last answer 4-5 times cause it was so juicy. I’m glad I was alone on the highway cause after the 3rd time my brain and heart exploded and I couldn’t help but shout in rapture.
You have such an elegant way of bridging the gap between the intellectual, the philosophical and the spiritual. Thank you for all you do Dr. Peterson.
I got an intellectual erection too!

@@mojojojo1529 im pretty sure thats just a method used to label him as someone people should disregard without consideration. i dont really like using that sort of reasoning considering he's competing intellectually with some pretty impressive people, and is willing negotiate with them quite a lot. im more prone to listen to someone respectful towards others than articles lobbing low level insults entirely focused on attacking a person or group.
So much wisdom has been shared in this session!
One of the most insightful, and inspirational exchanges I have ever seen from Dr. Peterson. And he has given a great deal of insightful and inspirational talks.
Thank you dear Jordan Peterson,
Your work is highly appreciated in 🇨🇭, homeland of C.G.JUNG.
Our sons are listening to you since the age of 15,, so over 12 years.
Your especially helpful to young men, in spite of the castration minded society, starting in school.
We'll enjoy sharing you in our circle.

He is right about serving others to come out of depression. As someone who was feeling lost and depressed and doing cocaine every other day I found a lot of happiness and fulfillment out of volunteering at a local food shelter and helping others. That helped me more than anything.
6 minutes into the conversation and he throws out one of the greatest pieces of wisdom of all time.
"The greatest enemy that you ever fight with is within your own heart"
Dr Peterson’s answer to the question about the soul was brilliant!
It's amazing to watch the dynamic between Dr Peterson & the audience that was filled with people who actually wanted to LEARN & have a REAL Q&A session. The attentive eyes just shows the distinction between intellectuals of high academic caliber & the sort of crowd that regularly attends his events just to lash out (mostly unreasonably). I honestly learnt a lot just from this Q&A session alone. Thank you as always Dr Peterson & Cambridge for organizing this!
All of these talks and conversations have been some of the most profound work of words I have ever heard from Jordan Peterson and what a great audience. In my opinion this has been one of the most important conversations of our time.
Why weren’t my professors this fantastic
@@kaivogel253 the fact that you took your time to come to a youtube channel that you don't like and reply to every comments with a negative energy is remarkable. I hope you get well soon my dearest human fellow.
@@kaivogel253 why are you so frustrated, literally all peterson is doing is trying to help people who struggles with their daily life's, i don't see peterson spreading around some propaganda, he is just articulating common sense, and i don't know what agitated you or what triggered you to go around replying to people as well as peterson in demeaning manners, you really are frustrated i see. The host's words at the end of the Q&A are true, humble and heartfelt. Dr Peterson is indeed a man above all men, a soul above all souls. Welcome back, Dr Peterson!!!

Cannot say just how interesting and enlightening that Q & A was. So much to listen to again and to think about. JP is a remarkable man and I count myself lucky to be able to view and engage in his lectures and public exchanges through the medium of UA-cam.
true. Good point.
Remarkable views and thoughts from no other than Dr. JP. I got all his books. All I need to do is for him to sign all of them in the future. Hoping for a Nobel Peace Prize for him.
Probably common at the moment for you jordan but you've been extremely helpful to me, I never thought I would admire another man.
I have watched this Q&A three times over the two days that it has been published and I’m very grateful that it’s available to me to watch many more times 🙏
I really love these Q&As!
I have listened to so many of his speeches, that I often get bored nowadays since there are a lot of subjects that he already formulated. Those "random" questions make it more unpredictable and give me something new, even tho Peterson's main subjects get back in his answers quite a lot.
Since I like to listen to him from time to time because it, simply put, gives me positive energy, this is a great deal for me.
Looks like he’s gearing up for another biblical series. The quality of this Q&A reminded me quality of those lectures.
