Jon Theodore is so tasteful on this tiny kit. Most prog drummers use huge kits but he creates so many textures with his choice of what to play. He's unpredictable yet always holds the tone of the music in his drumming. He truly is an inspirational genius.
I absolutely LOVE that nearly every comment is about Jon Theodore being an absolute GOD on the kit!!! Probably the main reason I personally LOVE TMV so much!
If caught them live their recent tour Josh and Jon were having epic dual solo. And Jon looks happy as fuck with them. So I can only imagine we're going to see the best qotsa album yet. IF not then we got tmv reunion coming up to look forward.

Sorry I just have a minute. Stupid me I missed them when they came to Vancouver b.c. Reminds me of led zeppelin and the doors both of whom I did see. Mars Volta is now a number 1 band on my planet. Better now than never. Thanks.

Dude, all the bandmembers reach such a peak of excitement and exhilaration that it’s as if they are possessed. Thank you middle school teacher for introducing me to such a sick group!
Man The mars volta is probably one of the boldest bands to ever emerge to mainstream music. It's incredible here how we have the craziest rythm section possible, just so frenzy, and then the noisiest picks in some points, but from nothing the guitar gives way to the organ in a really organic way. It's almost like watching a battle. And it's crazy to think they sold lots of records and were a very sucessful band being this strange and abravise.
They got so much hype rolling because people who liked it were blown away by it and were inspired to spread the good word, and it even influenced their peers. It might not have happened without At The Drive In first though.
I don’t think it would have happened, in regards to how much hype and momentum they had when they started, if not for ATDI. ATDI had so much momentum and praise going when they dissolved that when the Mars Volta started it all shifted to them. The Mars Volta sustained that attention and momentum on their own merits, songs and talents, but there’s no arguing that so many people were receptive to them and eager to hop on the train because of how highly regarded ATDI was and how suddenly it ended. There was already a built in fan base when they started that acted as the foundation for the cult following they gained and sustained.
I was lucky enough to see them live in Boston with this line up. it was a 3 and half hour show, no opener and they barely stop playing just between a few songs. It was an awesome show. after JOn Theodore left this band was never the same.
It makes me tear up seeing the original crew like this. It makes me realize how long they’ve been a part of my life. Those first years were something else man.
i love how the audience is dead in the start, but by the end they fucking love them cos they couldnt help but be blown away by the sheer power of the songs
If Mars Volta was The Big Lebowski Juan would be the rug because he ties the room together. He and Jon are such a monstrous rhythm section! I love this band very much.
every time I put this on I end up listening to/watching the whole thing. honestly, one of the greatest live performances for a rock band in the last 40 years imo. if not of all time. fucking electriccccccccccc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The first time I saw TMV was when they opened for A Perfect Circle, they came out, played non-stop for 45min, at then end I was like “wtf just happened?” I needed more, the rest is history. The last time I saw them they played almost 3hrs with this lineup, pure ecstasy. Can’t wait to see them again in Dallas in September.
This lineup bro… John and Ikey and Juan… they let Omar go nucking Futz and once they get warmed up that’s an unstoppable machine. I saw them last year, they were awesome but this is insanity
Its been a couple years since I read it. I just remember there was a recent picture of Cedric with Jon and Eva. I think Omar was also in the pic. There was a short statement where Omar said there was a lot to be done with Volta and that it would be original members. Also that ity would be a collaborative thing this time around. Rather than him dictating everything. Also recently Cedric teased on Twitter that Volta was coming soon. Once ATDI were done doing what their doing.
I love it when bands workshop new material via improv, it was a very pleasant surprise hearing Cassandra Gemini in the Cicatriz jam and Cygnus in Drunkship of Lanterns.
When I first saw Jon play drums, I felt like he was hurting himself. He was playing so hard, it almost felt like the band was being cruel not giving him a break. He just kept going and going and I was like - please stop - don't do this to yourself! Haha. He's an absolute machine.

Cedric Bixler Zavala your music has saved my life on more occasions than I can care to count. This performance is transformative to say the least.
saw this lineup 3 times. fucking legends
I saw it once and one time with Thomas Pridgen and as GREAT of a drummer he is, Jon Theodore is the backbone of this band.
If Josh doesn't use Jon to his full capacity on the next QOTSA album, I'm gonna go to the desert and slap him
I totally agree

It amazes me that JT doesn't fall asleep mid song now that he drums for Queens of the (Let's do 99% of our songs in 4/4) Stone Age
