I’m 65. This is a great movie. The quote “One must forgive the times one lives in,” hit me. I’m not sure I can forgive this present time of irrationality, lunacy, and the suicidality of Western life. Seeing British society in this movie broke my heart.
💯True--and put well. Thank you.
And it's only going to get worse I believe we are in the end times don't believe me read the Bible
@@henrycantrell6397 Absolutely.
Are you suggesting that we re all strapped into an Orwellian clownworld rocket sled to hell?
@@jimcrawford3185 It's nearly 2000 yrs in 2032 since Jesus returned to heaven. 70 yrs since 6 day war [67] Revelation 13:16,17-sounds like the great Re-set. I believe the Rapture will happen within the next 10 yrs.
Terrific story. Good acting. Mystery held me captivated til end. Arlene Dahl stayed stunningly beautiful til her end. Enviously woman perfection.
This was one of the best films I've watched in ages, thank you
These older Uk films r outstanding & underrated. Glad 4 Yt b/c I now have watched most of them.
Surprisingly good. Jack Hawkins is a workhorse, excellent cinematography, fine supporting cast, intelligent plot.
Excellent. Breath of fresh air in the drivel atmosphere of movies generally.
What a shocker. That really was American actress Arleen Dahl beauty mark and all. I kept thinking GB must have created their own version as her British accent was impeccable, and her acting ability was far superior to that breathy sex kitten B rated studio junk her studio usually stuck her with.
Such a shame she was never given a American opportunity to show us and develop her true talent.
Thanks for the good film.
I think Yvonne De Carlo was underestimated same way.
And Sally Gray looks like.
FABULOUSS English movie!! I am a 72 year old Anglophile and a longtime fan of Jack Hawkins. Arlene Dahl was exceptional in this particular role. More in a similar vein please!
Well I found out what I wanted to know reading a comment
I love that doctors would "collect you for an Xray"! And poodles eating lunch at the restaurant! Adults being adults with no one impeding their comings and goings or limits on this and that. I envy those who lived through such a gracious, freedom filled age!
Let me thank You a thousand times for showing this film.
The plot maintains your interest throughout, a very enjoyable film.
That scene with mom n law. The cut from the house to the board room was amazing. Great film! New sub
Jack Hawkins - great actor film star, with a superbly great voice…and manner. My old English and Form Master was very much like him in build, features and manner, even voice manner …indeed at times I wonder whether one or t’other modelled himself on t’other!…
Mr. Hawkins has done a remarkable job. Good to see old Dracula in a different venue too. Thanks for posting.
Twist and turn, then another twist and turn. DANG!! A viewer could get neck pains watching this slick flick. Thanks E.P.S.
This movie is called Fortune Is a Woman (1957). starring Jack Hawkins and Arlene Dahl.
Also "She Played with Fire"
Thanks! No wonder it wouldn’t come up searching for eternal intrigue!
I loved AD in Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Verbal jousting with James Mason.
Judith Moore
What a gem of a film. Really riveting. Full of suspense. Arlene Dahl was stunning. Brilliant.
This movie had me captivated from the get go. Wonderful camera work and musical score. Loved the entire thing.
Old British movies from the 40s & 50s are the best !
She played With Fire
Jack Hawkins and Michael Goodliffe were in a tremendous amount of films. I recognized a couple of the other British players as well. Was a good watch.
oh how I wished our Insu
and companies acted like this nowadays... oh well just loved every second of his film. First time I've seen Jack Hawkins in a very romantic role. lovely man.
Jack Hawkins had charisma. After throat cancer invaded his life, he still worked. Another actor dumbed his lines.
Didnt know that.
Lovely twists. Excellent. Romance , drama , crime.
Thank you so much for sharing that movie..I just love Jack Hawkins, and had not seen this one. I actually was in secondary school with his niece Rita and she spoke about her Uncle Jack often :)
Movies from this era of British Filmmaking are a pleasure to experience. I have never heard of this brilliant Mystery / Suspense picture but I'm happy to have discovered it.
Absolutely captivating movie from the beginning to the end.
Thank you so much for posting this film.
Jack Hawkins is a great actor and I always look forward to seeing films with him in them.
You're then guaranteed to watch a great film, if he is in it.
Thanks again.
All best wishes from Rose. 🌹
Hawkins, good actor, GREAT rifle. Glad found this. Uncle Jack plays it cagey here. Good one.
I love these old movies. So civilized.
and stylish!
I shall always trust a Jack Hawkins flic.
Thanks for the upload. Jack Hawkins was always good. I’ll never forgive Lloyds for destroying their magnificent, highest quality building (00:30) by one of Britain’s great architects, Edwin Cooper. You can see the quality of his work at the Four Seasons Hotel, 10 Trinity Square which fortunately was saved.
Magnificent @00:30 !
What a great film. Good acting by all . Kept my attention throughout- not an easy thing to do since I'm sometimes easily distracted and quickly bored with certain films.
This was a great movie, had a really good twist. I love all black and white movies❤
Great Movie..full of suspense and truth and fantastic actors....
Excellent mystery picture. The acting is superb and the plot keeps you guessing until the last. Thank you for a delightful evening.
Fantastic! This is real movie making. The fire - it is so real, it MUST be real. I have seen larger fires in the modern ones all over the place, and they were just fires, this one goes to the heart, making you grip your seat to stop yourself from helping! And the acting, and the tight-knit good story....a master piece.
Hawkins deserves star on Hollywood blvd. At least Linwood ave, royal oak mi
Excellent film. So unlike the typical insurance fraud cases.
Wonderful movie....gripping,supreme acting.
Excellent film thanks for uploading.
Jack Hawkings.Superb.Great film thanks for posting.

I stand corrected 😔

Jack was a great actor
What a creepy but good story. Glad it ended on a lighter note.
Such intrigue at every turn! Excellent!!
I know it was Christmas Eve,but drink/driving,tut-tut!
Candle in the basket … would be a great new title and new movie… set in the same time period with little to nothing changed… also with actual British actors only… even with an all star cast…?
would be an Intriguing name for a movie......😊
Wonderful! What a great movie. I've never heard of it, and frankly didn't expect much from the way it started. Well worth the time. Thank you for sharing it.
Great film Great story great actors
Excellent story and excellent acting! Thank you!!
These movies are wonderfull
Super movie, certainly was intriguing
The correct title of this movie is "Fortune is a Woman". You can find it elsewhere on UA-cam with proper title and credits. Among other problems, this version is missing the first few minutes.
Thanks for that...good looking out.
Thank you, blaisejo. I'll look for it. (What other problems)?
Very well acted movie. Love British cinema.
Jack Hawkins at his very best!
He was exceptional in Mandy...
VERY good Thank you ❤
Sorta fun...but a few big plot holes...Arlene Dahl certainly came out well here, more than just a gorgeous fashion plate.
Ladies in bed lapping up gin at sunrise and whose lit cigarettes appear out of nowhere, gentlemen suffering severe asthma attacks (sounded more like emphysema) all the while puffing on a cigarette,
Great film and great acting.
Excellent movie!!
Truly intriguing!
Wonderful movie And Brilliant Cast 👍🇬🇧
Personal life:- JACK HAWKINS:
Hawkins married actress Jessica Tandy in 1932, and the couple divorced in 1940.
Together, they had one daughter, Susan Hawkins (1934-2004).
In 1947, Hawkins married former actress Doreen Lawrence
(1919-2013), and they remained married until his death in 1973.
Doreen, upon marrying Jack gave up acting completely to became a housewife and mother to raise their family:
Together, they had three children, Caroline (b. 1955), Andrew (b. 1950), and Nicholas.
Death
In May 1973, Hawkins had an experimental operation on his throat to insert an artificial voice box.
He started haemorrhaging and was admitted to St Stephen's Hospital, Fulham Road, London, forcing him to drop out of The Tamarind Seed (1974), in which Hawkins was to have played a Russian general.
He died on 18 July 1973, of a secondary haemorrhage. He was 62.
His final appearance was in the television mini-series QB VII.
His autobiography, " Anything for a Quiet Life ", was published after his death.
He was cremated and his ashes interred at Golders Green Crematorium in North London.
Great movie 👍🏼
Jack Hawkins was a fine actor and a direct descendant of Jim Hawkins, one of the stars of 'Treasure Island'.
Ben Gunn was his great niece
Yes, and his brother was Screamin' Jay Hawkins, though the family always tried to deny this.

I never knew that insurance was so...intriguing. Double Indemnity! Of course there was Banacek and Rockford had some insurrance cases.
Love Jack Hawkins!
So do I.
Me too.
An enjoyable drama with good acting, despite the credits being absent.
But who needs credits or even a title?
The proof is in the pudding!
Thanks.
Great movie with lots of twists!
Where is the opening and closing credits? I recognize Jack Hawkins, a great actor, and I understand Arlene Dahl is in it, but who else?
Dennis Price for one,and chris Lee as a welsh dracula😂
And !Michael Goodliffe ? He was never a huge star but excelled in the many supporting roles he played..
Greta Gynt as Vere Litchen.
@@susannah1066 Thanks, Susan.
Thank you for posting this! I really enjoyed it!
Wonderful old movie!!!
Good drama. But even if it weren't good, it would be worth watching just to watch Arlene Dahl's exquisite face (and gorgeous makeup)!!
One to watch, enjoy it .
More twists than a bent corkscrew.
Wonderful movie. 2nd time watching.
This is a really great find. Thanks!
9:12 "Without a word to me" - "It never occured to me"
The script writer must have been a bit on the poetic side. 😉
Arlene Dahl 😍🦊
Christoper Lee!
good movie
This film is really called 'Fortune Is a Woman' so I can't see why it's listed here under this bogus title.
This site always gives its own title to films, never using the titles under which they were originally released. Maybe it's to avoid copyright infringement?
@@anglophils645 There are a handful of films to the right of your comment which are titled correctly.
And they cut credits too. So this channel is not worth it.
Thanks for letting us all know! I don't know why there's usually fake names on these old movies on here... and the first few minutes lopped off. Copyright reasons?
Not worth it ?!?
er....how much did you pay to watch it ? Perhaps you could be
reimbursed for loss of your valuable time...?
A fantastic film❤
Entertaining, I confess that I thought that it was "Rhonda"? My mistake!
Sarah received only 30,000 pounds for a burnt down mansion estate and all furniture and property and art work? Thar's hardly rich. I'd think three million pounds even back then.
More like 85,000 USD given the time period.
Post WW2 mansion estates were going very cheap because of the crippling taxes imposed by the Labour government. Relatives of mine bought a derelict mansion estate with a lake and grounds designed by Capability Brown near Aylesbury for £9,000!
There were $4 to a British Pound in the 1950s, so that's about $120,000 then, now worth about 1.4 million dollars.
@@patricksullivan4329 Still, that was an awfully big mansion. A lot of woodwork, nice furniture and artwork.
I think it would have been worth a hell of a lot more than that.
@@aspenrebel It was a completely different economy then. For one thing, art wasn't worth anything like today. And as someone else pointed out mansions were being sold off for a song thanks to the 90% marginal tax rates. The British people voted for socialism in 1945 after WWII. They got what they wanted; good and hard.
Very enjoyable!!!❤
Damn good show!
Jack Hawkins was a great actor. Why don't they make men like that anymore.
Jack smoked three boxes of cigarettes everyday so that would have helped with the voice and Arlene was married six times!!!?🎉
And he had to have his larynx removed.
One wore out the lungs . The other
wore out the vaj.
He took up the offer of an experimental "Artificial" larynx. Died of, inevitable, in those days, post-operative haemorrhage; he hated oesophageal speech.@@roundtwo3321
LOLOL LOLOL LOL LOLOLOL
I LIKE ANYTHING THAT JACK HAWKINS IS IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
👍absolutely
It is admirable how the British people are so well behaved and composed...😊
They USED to be . Sadly , that generation has passed away .
The Britain of today has changed
beyond recognition since this film
was made.
@@2msvalkyrie529 Actually my parents were born in 1920 & 1911-and they told me things from the past, they don't show in Agatha Christie. This is a script-they had to be nice to get shown in Cinema's. Read some Bio's from the past-the sex, crime, suicide, women poisoning family members, pill popping.
I'm too busy feasting my eyes on all the beautiful props: silver serving pieces, grandfather clocks, ornate furniture, fireplaces, etc.
Time for egg and chips and fish fingers with peppers 🌶 enjoyed the movie.
Could you please add Spanish subtitles? I am longing for watching it !
And the scene with the dog goes nowhere, but he does put a lit cigarette in the breast pocket of his jacket! 😆
The story is interesting, but to me the music is exaggerated, overwrought, and in many places inappropriate for what's happening on the screen.
Keep your eye on the old bat
At some angles she looks like Bewitched.
You mean Elizabeth Montgomery. Yes, she does.
Yes
If the three of you think so then I guess she must, but I don't see it. More like Barbara Eden to me.
Is that Christopher lee in the movie
