I was wishing I had a father-in-law like Claude Raines, such a wonderful gentleman on an off screen. Additionally a great patriot who left England & returned to fight with the British in WW1. He gained dual citizenship & was a great American as well.
Despite alcohol & cirrhosis finally taking him, he was not the stereotypical mean drunk, but rather functional , displaying gentlemanly poise with a confidence & grace. To find out that he was alcohol dependent was kind of a shock - as all the people who came in contact with him have nothing but fond memories of him before and after his death. And oh yeah, a fine actor & role model. RIP 🇬🇧🇺🇸

This is the youngest Anne Shirley I've ever seen onscreen. She is absolutely adorable. This is one of Garfield's early films too, years before his many famous appearances in film noir such as "The Postman Always Rings Twice."

Indeed this movie is a rarity Seeing a true interpersonal relations in a normal Christian family. Reminds me of my dads family with his 8 siblings in a large Iowa homestead! How exciting it must have been for everyone that was honest and trusted in Gods providence! 25:45

A rarity of a film. Portraying deep love and profound human emotions. Showing the depths of goodness, hope, and real life situations. Great beauty in this film. A capturing of the human soul with it needs and challenges, disappointments, sorrows, misunderstandings, and final realization that though life is often very hard, It is still worth living, because true love is reason enough.

Look at the bright side. If they got to go to Manila, they would have been there just in time for the Japanese Invasion. Then they could have starred in the "sequel," "Bataan Death March."

$22.50 a month rent in NYC. My son pays $2000 today for the same thing. This country is not doing better than any other in the world except a few . Whats WRONG with this picture? Everything. We lead the world in just 1 thing, dishonorable as it is....war including depriving Americans of basic necessities to spend their hard earned money on weapons that do just 1 thing.

Sensitive, intensely written story of reality, at that point in history. (For that matter, now, as well!). I really love this movie!
However, way, way too many commercials!!!!!

I'm giving the thumbs up on this picture even though the OP not only posted the wrong title (It's really called Saturday's Children from 1940), but this is NOT even an English picture, but an American one.

@@stevegilmore1940 Actually, the Spanish did indeed "have it long", over 300 years and in the 1930's and 40's there was still a strong Spanish influence with large companies and land-holders from old, established Spanish families that still exist to this day. In those days, Spanish language would have been helpful working for those companies.
