How you doing I'm having the same problem with my car and I was wondering do you have that same shift lever for a 1997 Ford Explorer XLT 4. 0 l I need one for that
Great video! Thanks for going through the entire process of putting it back together instead of getting the lever out and saying "re-instillation is just the reverse."

The 1AAuto videos are extremely helpful, I truly appreciate them, you have saved me lots of money and aggravating circumstances on my 1st Gen Ford Expedition. Anyone who is in need of how to fix lots of your automotive issues for a 97-02 Ford Expedition or 97-03 F-150 it's basically the same vehicle and 1AAUTO is a great resource. If I may add my 2cents, I would like to see in your videos that prior to fixing the issue at a hand a brief summary to what would either cause the problem and what are some possible signs of a failing part and if you know of possible tricks of the trade to making removal and or installation a bit easier to share them with us. Thank you again for all your help!
I'm a 56 year old woman just replaced the shifter on my 2000 expedition.was very helpful video .I found a 3rd clip along side for wire.took me twice as long to find were wire was connected wasn't real clear in the video .thanks for the video.
Thanks for the vid. I think I can get it done after watching this. If you do another one of these, when you are talking about electrical connectors, brackets, and such, please point out the item you're talking about. I know it's dead simple and obvious for you guys because you know which item you're talking about but it's all the same under there to us rookies. lol
If the gear select has about 1 inch worth of play up and down, is it the faulty bushings that hold down the column or should I just replace the gear select lever? Is it the "pin" that has worn away that allows for the extra "play" or is it most likely the black column bushings that have worn away..????
You probably already moved Long, but I'm betting it was the black plastic bushing that needed replaced. I did that first and it was 80% better, found a junkyard shifter to swap out and it's now 90% better.
My 97 F150 has 354000 miles on it and I have this problem so I have to pull it over to the left and it starts. I just wander if it is still worth fixing.
Two questions: can you replace just that little broken part at the end by the overdrive button? And when you replace the whole arm do you have the ability to adjust the indicator lining up with the gears? Mine is off and the little piece at the end is broken off.
I followed everything you did on replacing the column shifter on my 01 Ford F150 very helpful but when I went to start it up, no crank or start up everything else works as it should did I trigger a theft mode or the immobilizer. Didn't move anything as I pulled the column apart, do have to reprogram or reset it what can I do?
Great tutorial. I am looking to do something similar in a ram 3500. I need to change the lever to improve leg room. The bend in the lever causes it to hit my knee while in drive. Can the lever on the Ford be installed upside down, so that it curves in the other direction ( away from the knees ) ? Appreciate Any Insight You Can Provide.
I would like to see how you actually disconnected and connected the wiring clip without dropping the lower dash panel. There is also a third retainer above the connector that makes pulling the wire through after disconnecting nearly impossible. Dropping the panel is not difficult and gives you a lot of room to work.
+Jeffrey Kumjian Thanks for watching! You do not need to disconnect the battery for the application shown in the video, and shouldn't be much different on a diesel. 1aauto.com
+Dawn Griggs Here's a how-to video for a vehicle similar to yours. These steps should be similar enough to complete this task: ua-cam.com/video/DycAAYxn3bM/v-deo.html
I WAS WONDERING, WITH THE PROBLEM I'M GIVING WITH MY 1997 FORD EXPEDITION GEAR INDICATOR NOT MATCHING THE GEAR LETTER AND WHEN I THINK IT'S IN PARK, IT START TO MOVE, THEN I HAVE TO GIVE THE GEAR HANDLE A LITTLE WIGGLE AND.....THEN ITS IN PARK. IS THIS AN INDICATION OF A GEAR SELECTOR OR THE CABLE TO THE TRANSMISSION? THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO EVEN CARE ABOUT US..
+Mr,Buttery Thank you for checking us out. With this situation, it could be that the cable running to the transmission is loose and not locking into place, or the gear selector is loose. The easier piece to check is the gear shift selector so we would recommend checking this for the OE specifications. 1aauto.com
The whole plastic end piece that holds the overdrive button broke off my shift lever. What a crappy engineer who came up with such a bad design. I am thinking of relocating the overdrive button and living with the shift lever until someone designs a replacement with all steel.
@@1AAuto I've been trying to look online, I can find USED ones on Ebay for $30.00 to $39.00 !! I'll take a look at Pull-A-Part near me, and see again if they have 1 that I can salvage. The ones they had were worse than mine. Thanks for the reply !! ✌👍👍😉
You don't need to do all this to change a shift cable. All this work is unnecessary. Your doing way to much. I personally do not like watching all this unnecessary stuff.

Hey if you think you can make it like that go for it there's guys who modify their rides like that it will look cool and work for you.

Why was it necessary to take out the part that the ignition key fits into?
To remove the column cover
How about the column shifter cable?
