Wow. Thanks man. I bought the Dorman kit yesterday. The old bushing was the 1 piece transparent bushing. I fought and could not get the new one on. Your saying the 2 piece orange bushing work. I’m going to try this when get home. Thanks. BTW, for anyone reading this…DO NOT perform this on un-level ground. I accidentally bumped the trans lever, taking the truck out of P and it began to roll backwards. Luckily I can still move fast and got out of the way. Going to use my 2 post lift when I get home Thanks again man.
I hate to admit it, but I bought Dorman Ford fuel line retainer clips when I replaced the fuel pump in my car to resolve a P0171/P0174 lean code on my Ford Five Hundred. Say what you will about Dorman; sometime they're the the only choice if you don't want to donate to the Ford Dealership college fund.
Just completed this exact repair with exact parts on my 2006 F150. Replaced bushing on the cable at my console shifter...clear one goes console shifter end of cable!!
Me too! Changed it a few years ago. I got in my 2006 F150 truck, and the shifter was loose. Moved it front and back, but it wouldn't shift into anything. I thought, Oh crap my transmission is done! Then I popped open the console and saw that the bushing had deteriorated. I held together the cable and connector with my hand so I could shift the truck and went to O'Reilly Auto. Got the part and a small c-clamp to push the bushing in. Done and done. A repair shop would have wanted to change out the entire cable and charge a lot. Saved money.
@@Jsuarez6 Great info, I'm trying to change plastic bushing on 2000 Ford E350; but couldn't pop plastic bushing on small tiny metal transmission cable nub. I was wondering how to pop it on since squeezing with fingers is rather difficult. Small C-Clamp is great idea.
Thank you for doing this video. It helped me figure out why I couldn’t shift out of park! The bushing had broken, fallen out and the shift linkage was completely off the stud! Found the Dorman kit at O’Reilly and installed. You’re the bomb bro!
Brian, can't thank you enough! Whenever something comes up on my 2008 King Ranch, I immediately come to this site for answers. And you always have the perfect "fix it right" video. In this case, the bushing on the shift arm disintegrated-and the cable separated from the shift-arm. Did as you suggested and "Dorman kit" to the rescue (didn't even know this kit existed). After watching this video, I figured why not check the bushing on the transmission link as well. So I did-and found the internal busing was completely missing! Turned out the only thing holding the cable was that flimsy locking tab. In about 3 minutes, used the remaining Dorman pieces to repair what could have become a serious "no shift" transmission issue. You're a lifesaver, Brian, just wanted you to know how important your work is... not only for saving us DIYers money, but also saving lives!
Great video, Brian. I know you're all about O.E. parts, but offering a low-cost solution for a common problem is just good business! Keep up the great work.

While your on the trans linkage, I've ran into a couple trucks with a stiff shifter symptom and found the neutral safety switch had rust build up in it on the shift shaft causing it to bind hard. Sometimes your able to get it off and clean up the shaft and all good. Sometimes it's so tight you break the switch and have to replace it. I'm sure you've seen this before. Just my little tip while talking about shifters. Thanks for all you do!

Love your videos! I was told I "stretched my linkage cable" when I had to forcefully yank the shifter out of park on a hill. My floor shifter now has to go past drive and back up to engage. I have a 2010 Explorer 4.0. I wanted to try this easy fix first but was told this won't fit my vehicle. Do you have any advice or another product recommendation?
Justin wondering what the symptom was that this was the solution. Currently working on an 02 f350. Replaced steering column because something broke and there was a disconnect in the column between the tumbler and the ignition switch. Had to remove the ignition switch to manually start, and shut it off.. Now with junkyard column you have to yank it higher into park to be able to start it and yank it to be able to get the key out when shutting it off. Are these bushings the problem? Are the bushings on the column for the shift lever the problem?
Mine's messed up on the other side where it hooks in to the accelerator throttle body lever up on top of the engine snaps onto that piece that's the one that's broke online I was hoping you would show how to do that one
I have a question sry it doesn't pertain to this exactly. But my transmission acts like it's buck8ng at around 40 -45 miles a hour ,could this be time to change the filter ?
I have a 2012 Ford f150 ecoboost 177k on it. I have a noise coming from behind left headlight, almost sound like a fan rubbing. Can't figure out what is making the noise. And it's intermittent. Any ideas?

I don't know what the metal tube part is called that the long tire rod goes into that helps to crank down the spare tire on a 2000 ford expedition 4.6L V8 Triton XLT.
I'm tired of having my spare tire in the third row seat.
Hopefully there's a video!😊
The ,clear pieces are for the inside where the shifter is. Mine broke and my shifter was lose moving freely from P all the way down to 2 gear.
are these the same bushing as the ones up by the shifter near the steering wheel, do they have the same problem
Is there a bushing for the part thats under the hood at the other end?
When towing does the broken transmission linkage bushing really become noticeable like no power going uphill and over heating?
no unless you are in a different gear than you should be.
WOW Brian, I can't believe you are endorsing a Dorman part! I avoid that company like the plague! I just wish Ford made the same part instead of forcing you to buy the entire cable.
Oh and that stone hanging out of the heatshield drain hole is really messing with my OCD.....
I fixated on it also.
I'm not endorsing Dorman, just saying they make fixing parts for the linkage since individual parts are not available separately.
I was wanting to ask your thoughts on the new Ford Maverick and the Hybrid power train in it
Off topic..
2005 Ford F 150 LT 4X4.
Passenger side pre cat HO2S.
What’s the best way to access this part for replacement? I’ve replaced the other three no problem but this one is deep!
Maybe a flex head ratchet wrench? The drivers side was pretty tight, too. Torch the fitting, work it back and forth, it should come out ok.
Do you have any videos about PO715 code on a 2015 ford f150 ecoboost?
How do you adjust this linkage i put one on today same brand bushings and they fit great but now my transmission doen not go in reverse it grinds but does not engage does it have to do with the cable adjustment ?
it looks like the repair you did was on a 2004 f150 is that correct? someone below commented that they used a different part # 14041 just trying to figure out what part to buy for my 2004 f150
Got a laugh when you said dorman! Yes dorman! Lol!
Ford Tech is that the problem that happen to me today? My 2003 F-150 automatic transmission steering column gear shift stopped functioning fully this morning. It does registrar properly and I am only able get it in reverse and 2nd? Thanks.
Jim
Thank you Brian, that's good to know that kit is now available. Where are you located, if somewhat close I would like to have you do some work on my ford. Thank you.
Hey, with my Ford Fusion 2017, my rotary dialed is stuck and the flashing light is on P. There is a message saying “shift service required”. Do you think that if I replace the selector cable completely will fix this problem?
Unfortunately it doesn't fit my truck, but valuable info if I'm ever working on a newer model than mine
Good information! Thank you!
Do you have any tips on tightening it even more? I looked into this because my truck was having issues with the sensor recognizing that it was in park or reverse. Like to start it I have to put it in neutral or push forward on the shifter. And the get the back up lights to come on I have to go pst reverse a little bit into park and then come back into R from the top. I did this and seem to still have that issue.
Do you think this kit would fit my 2020 Lincoln mkz
Hey can this affect the abs system an cause light to come on? I’ve used over 30 fuses for number 14 , every time I put in reverse the fuse pops an the ac goes out an the abs light comes on, I need help figuring it out 😅
no
@@FordTechMakuloco thanks!
Would this cause the transmission to , not slip but not be in the right gear ?
Help! My 99 F350 is stuck in park! But i can give the key 1/4 turn and itll let me put it in neutral to start it. And yes i replaced the range sensor already!
Nice tip thanks Brian.
Will there be a video for the pinion seal job?
I already have one on the channel
I used it! works great
Mine's messed up on the other side where it hooks in to the accelerator throttle body lever up on top of the engine snaps onto that piece that's the one that's broke online I was hoping you would show how to do that one
Could this cause the overdrive off sensor to start blinking if it isn’t fixed ?
Will this kit work on a 2007 Ford explorer 2wd 4.0L with a 5R55S transmission?
Thank you you saved my a$$
I have a question sry it doesn't pertain to this exactly.
Any ideas?
Brilliant 🌞
