1:33 “It is a carryover engine” No it’s not. The old one used the GM-SAIC MGE (same engine family as the last of the 1.4 turbo Holden/Opel Astras sold in Australia). The new one uses a totally in-house SAIC engine with next to no shared components. It even has a variable geometry turbo, super-rare for a petrol engine. For the record, I think MGs are terrible cars, but just stating facts that this is not a carryover engine.

They could keep all their 5 star rating rubbish by building in a loophole that we can activate if we choose to (i.e. make it extremely easy to hack the system).
@@daweigo6851 Not necessarily. ANCAP does have certain requirements that need to be met, but for example Kia and Hyundai will beep at you every single time you go over the speed limit by 1-2km/h. Just leaving a comment to say I'm watching this video in spite of the silly clickbait thumbnail comparing a $30K China car to a German luxury brand. Hope you guys don't go further down the clickbait rabbit hole with Paul making dumb open mouth faces in the thumbnails and such.
@Bacender had to laugh at the "dumb open mouthed thumbnail" I make it a point of never watching a video with those, also titles that say I "must watch" - nope, no I don't 🥱
My mum has a Mazda CX-30 and overall the car has been far from perfect however, one excellent thing about it is the way all the safety systems are tuned so they don’t go off unnecessarily. feel many other car makers could learn a lot from Mazda in that regard.
I like the way you still use your indicators to change lanes even on a test track with no other traffic. As for the new safety systems. Utterly ridiculously and almost as if they are making private motoring as difficult and annoying as possible. They need to split the safety ratings into two. One, the most important would be injuries to occupants that would cover the physical aspects of the car in a crash, crumple zones etc and the useful safety items like airbags. The other rating would cover the nonsense items like seatbelt warnings and the speed nanny. People could then decide which is more important to them.
The safety systems on these new vehicles are ridiculously intrusive. When you get in the vehicle you start turning them all off which is dangerous in itself as you’re taking your eyes off the road trying to work out how to navigate through the menus to enable you to turn them off. In the case of the attention monitor in my current vehicle I simply put a tape over the sensor so it couldn’t read where I was looking. It may not be legal but it sure prevents a lot of frustration.
The old MG's were cheap and good on paper, would be good to see however how they age over the next few years and what the warranty was like. I remember reading the warranty for the old AWD MG HS and you would void warranty if you drove in sand and had a mechanical problem.
We were the first' to take the rest drive in Melbourne, what We noticed is that the Mobile Holder is not designed logically. Ideally it' should be closer to the screen. But is placed close to the glove box. Since it does not have wireless connection, the wire will be dangling all' the way.
In regards to braking. Is the surface there low friction? Lots of other reviews can get cars down to 30-35m for 100-0, where as your best is 35+. Also to set yourselves aside, why not do 2-3 back to back braking tests, this would show how a braking system holds up to heat and brake fade, might separate the sports cars from the SUVs.
The look is certainly an improvement though the front reminds me of someone's face being blown with a high pressure air-hose and their mouth goes all wonky.

Almost all Chinese cars have that stupid-looking gigantic screen glued into the dashboard and they all have the same layout, it's so freaking boring to look at as it is stupid. The problem is, the Chinese consumers, they all love these stupid gimmicks and that's why all of these cars have that absurb feature among others. Since the Chinese market is too big, many car manufacturers from other countries invest in China, built factories in China, make a JV with Chinese manufacturers, bought by the Chinese brands and now they all followed suit with this layout. It's so dumb to think that we will be fined for using phone while driving but operating that distracting screen is ok.

So it has better brakes (well for that single, unloaded stop at least) and all the electronic garbage but costs 20% more. Still with a drivetrain from the ark (not sure its a carry over though) and when loaded almost enough power to get out of its own way. I've always said the same thing - any country can make cars the same quality but they will end up costing at least as much if not more than makers with many decades of experience and connections in the industry. When this is the price of an X5 it will be 70% as good. Remember most people driving this won't be one up on a test track - they will be loading it with kids, junk, holiday stuff and so on then driving up hill and down dale in traffic or out on the open highway asking it to earn its keep. For a holiday run with a family and luggage on board this is going to be well over 2t. An undersized petrol engine in that situation is terrible to drive because you're always working it hard and that has the knock on that it starts to eat fuel. Then you have a dual clutch for all the around town stuff and all the joys they bring - especially one of questionable calibration and quality. When they are cheap they are cheap. When they start asking enough to get them this close to the competition they really need to compete and its a hard sell against even relatively low priced competition. Having to constantly turn off annoying and distracting bs "safety" functions and warnings every time you start the car is a pain in the arrse! Driving these modern cars with tech may be safer in some ways but it's creating problems. Unless manufacturers wake up to themselves and provide a cheaper low tech buying option minus the annoyances then I'm out! I will never buy a new car again.
How can a "safety system" that requires 18 screen touches to disable it, be of any benefit to safety. If this is how ANCAP measures "safety" then they are pandering to the drivers who will never improve their driving skills.

Never thought I'd say this about a Chinese car, but me likes this car. It's not perfect, but no car is, and like you repeatedly say re its cons, "It's not the end of the world." Will go test drive this supposed ripper.
My condolences
@@rizaS55 Ya, rethinking it.
Not the end of the world
The last HS was one of the worst cars I’ve ever driven. Terrible electronics, terrible to drive. Cabin was wearing prematurely. This one looks a lot better, but drivetrain is the same. See plenty of them around so maybe I’m just fussy.
Drivetrain is not the same
@@YZJBthis is still absolute trash
as a motorcycle rider who hung up his boots nearly a decade ago due to fkwit drivers, the more these active safety systems come in to play the more I'll be more comfortable riding again
You’re assuming these systems actually improve safety…
This is just a Haval Jolion.
chinese cars today are what japanese cars were 30 years ago and korean cars 15 years ago
Not really. I would say that they are behind just 3-5 years.
essence is $46396 driveway, not cheap anymore
Lack of paddles is a Serious mistake
Having to constantly turn off annoying and distracting bs "safety" functions and warnings every time you start the car is a pain in the arrse! Driving these modern cars with tech may be safer in some ways but it's creating problems. Unless manufacturers wake up to themselves and provide a cheaper low tech buying option minus the annoyances then I'm out! I will never buy a new car again.
How can a "safety system" that requires 18 screen touches to disable it, be of any benefit to safety. If this is how ANCAP measures "safety" then they are pandering to the drivers who will never improve their driving skills.
A wireless phone charger makes no sense when apple carplay is wired
I have n MG HS this week as a hire car. This is the 2nd mg i have rented and like the first it's a piece of crap. Infotament is slow which doesn't normally bother me but you have to use it to change climate control. iphone constantly disconnects, cruise control has a mind of its own, brakes are too hard and the gearbox is worse than a 25 year old commodore.
They don’t have any resale value at all. Used car dealerships don’t even accept them anymore
Complete nonsense......

You can TURN off all that shite once and for all, all you do is buy the plug with Bluetooth and the apps that give you easy access to the system and they can all be changed

As soon as we can lure one into the office.

I love watching this channel, however these stupid headlines are super cringeworthy and gag inducing. MG is just an old brand bought by SAIC and pumping out cheap, basic SUVs. Better than a BMW? Not a chance in hell.
So you didn’t watch the review then? The reference was to the steering, which is significantly better than the X5 we tested on the same day.
Hi can you please do ssangyong Rexton review . Thanks
12:20 again, it is not a carryover drivetrain
Previous one looked much nicer IMO and removing the 2 litre engine and AWD is a mistake. I thought, Paul, what do you mean it's more expensive, it's the same price, then I realised this was FWD only and the 1.5 engine. So.. yeah..... I dunno. The centre lane autonomous driving has massively been improved though, the older medal went right over the line, remember?
@@teddym2808 the previous one would have depreciated by 90% after 2 years. Great for the used PRC car buyer
For this sort of money, you'd be better off with a Haval H6.
Or not a Chinese are at all.
Chinese
No thanks
Ya, always leaned that way too.
Good one Paul ,just more Cheap Chinese Auto Flooding the Australian and world market, Time to slap higher tariffs on these cheap cars from Chinah, just like the high tariffs the Chinese slap on Aussie exports .Australia is becoming the dumping ground for Chinese cars ,Oh and don't forget Paul to tell prospective buyers how much these carswill be worth when one try's to sell it , Pretty sure it will be scrap value only.
Longer,wider and uglier 😂😂😂😂
And worse resale value
Going forward ancap scores will be impacted by on cars like this without shortcut buttons for climate controls and such.
Voice controls would be the next logical step, but do you really want chinese cars having your voice print on record...
Ha ha paranoid, what will the Chinese do with your voice...
