WHICH CAME FIRST THE FLOORS OR THE CABINETS!

  • Have you ever had a dishwasher break and while trying to fix it realized that you can’t get it out. You tilt it, slide it and wiggle it back and forth. No matter what you do it won’t come out. Now you see why. There is no flooring under the dishwasher or cabinets and the cabinets were not blocked up to get the true height needed. You have to get to the level legs of the dishwasher and lower it down. Hopefully the legs are not corroded and still work without breaking. This could have been avoided if the flooring had been installed in the right places and the cabinets were blocked up underneath.
I have received many phone calls where clients are asking should we install the cabinets first or the flooring first. Well many people in remodeling have their own beliefs with a schedule of construction. The answer has 2 main factors. You can save money by only running the flooring to the front of the cabinets. However, this only saves a fraction of money and increases the labor of installing the cabinetry. The 2nd factor is if you are using a prefinished wood flooring. A prefinished wood floor scratches and dents easily. Imagine your cabinet installers and other trades walking on the floor with tools, sliding materials across the floor and creating problems with a floor that is already finished and installed. Now if the installers and other trades are professional they will use blankets and shoe protectors while inside your house.
If you decide to install the cabinetry first can you just install them sitting straight on the subfloor? The answer is no. If you install your cabinetry straight onto the subfloor you will not get the true height of the cabinets. This happens because the cabinets at a height of thirty four and one half inches when installed on the subfloor. Now you run your finished flooring right to the front of the cabinet taking away anywhere from three quarter of an inch to one inch of height depending on what flooring thickness you pick. To defeat this mishap your installer will attach blocks the same height as your flooring and connect them on the bottom of all your base cabinets. Once these blocks are attached on the bottom of the base cabinets you will have the true height of the cabinets at thirty four and one half inches above the flooring. By adding the blocks you now have a consistent countertop height at 36” from a finished floor. This also helps with your appliances when installed. Think of a dishwasher that you are trying to get out to fix and it is below your floor but you cannot raise it up because of the countertop. If blocking was used under the base cabinets equal to the flooring, it would be no problem to access that dishwasher.
Whichever material you choose to install first does not matter as long as it is done the right way. If not it could be an expensive fix or a hassle to deal with in the future.

i always build my own kicks for 2 reasons. first to ensure a level base and second to make sure there is proper clearance for any undercabinet appliances.

ive designed cabinetry for years, the schedule dictates what comes first. Any designer worth a crap will account for floor thickness and build their kicks accordingly, the installer will level the kick with a laser to the right height and the flooring guy will floor into appliance voids. When the cabinets show up they will just slide right on top and your ready to rock. Many years ago when i would measure for a job the construction would be finished, now most jobs are run from plans and measured once the the framing is in and on commercial work its not uncommon to see the other trades holding the finish drawings of the millwork company and using their number for laying out the wiring and plumbing.

Great video! Would this still apply if you're using 4 leg levelers on each cabinet box? Ikea does this. This way the toe kick isn't attached and then gets boxed in. Thank you!

Hey Steven. Thanks for watching. It would apply to the leg levelers as well. As you stated you could come back and attach the toe kick after the floors.

I’m redoing my kitchen, and I’m running floating vinyl flooring through the entire first floor . Can that be installed under the cabinets ?

Yes. If floors are level, cabinets will be easier to install.

@@spencerripley91 thank you! Will I need to do any waterproofing in case of leaks from appliances ? The floors itself are waterproof

Hey Spencer, quick question, I'm DIY'ing my kitchen. if my underlayment and laminate flooring are .51", should I place blocks at .75" height .25" back from the front edge then place flooring 1/8 from that?
The other option was use .5" spacer and keep the floor 1/8" away from edge.
    toe mold either way

Thanks for the comment. It depends on your cabinets. Most are made with a 4" recess toe kick. I usually make my blocks exact height of flooring and put in front and back of the cabinet base flush then have my toe kick skin cover that i attach go to the floor.

Hi, I am replacing my old cabinets. I am also increasing the base cabinet space/area. I mean currently, my base cabinet is about 8'. That includes a dishwasher and sink base. So there is very limited cabinet storage. I am planning to add an additional 6' of base cabinet space beside the existing one. The issue is that I see the existing cabinets placed below the flooring, I see a kind of 8' x 21"" groove/pit in which cabinets are placed. So my new 6' cabinet section will not level with the existing one. I guess the older cabinets are directly installed over the subfloor, I do not see the current cabinet height at 34.5"". Does it sound like the topic you are discussing in this video? I mean did they install the cabinets first and then the flooring? If yes can I use the plywood to level the flooring?

This is exactly what it sounds like and you should be able to brace under with the same size plywood to get the level.height you desire. You are right on track it sounds like.

The only problem you could have is height adjustments if it changes as with backsplashes, trims, etc.
