    Very informative video and perfect timing since I placed my first online order last week and for 12 cattleyas.
    Here are some of them:
    • L. purpurata sanguinea
    • C. Louis Chaton (percivaliana `Summit' x trianaei `Cashen's' FCC/AOS) (1898 Remake)
    • Cattleya Lacey Michelle Matherne (1765)
    • Lc. Ken Stromsland 'Eric'
    • Rlc. Kalim Smith's Kahelelani 'Volcano Queen'
    • Bc. Rustic Spots 'H&R' (Bc. Richard Mueller x C. Landate)
    I'll have to examine them more closely before making any decisions on repotting.

    I have been using a mix of bark and scoria gravel, and a very small amount of potting mix. My plants seem much happier now than they were in a mostly bark mix. Scoria won’t break down, so should keep the mix aerated for a lot longer…hopefully.

      I had to google what scoria gravel was lol , you are using potting media in with your cattleya ?

      @@thenaturecompany I use a tiny amount of potting mix, I guess about 3%. I think it provides a very small amount of broken down material in an otherwise barren media, and not enough to clogg it up, especially with the big air spaces created by scoria (lava rock ha ha). My theory is it provides more diverse microfauna which is more natural and probably a more balanced micro ecosystem. I think this provides some nutrients for the orchids, and it helps to keep harmful microfauna in check. I thought long and hard before I did this! My plants are very happy in this mix, (I am not 100% certain because of my mix or despite my mix).

      I can understand now why you used it there could be some good mycorrhizal fungi , it is so interesting to see how different people grow their orchids . Thanks for your insights.

    Awesome content, as always!! I have some ‘just a little larger than seedling’ sized Cattleyas that are growing nicely. I got them in December and they are still in their initial seedling sized pots. I haven’t done all the necessary research into them, because I knew they needed to be bigger before any changes are made but this is a definite assist in what I need to know. You are awesome!!😎 💯🤗👍🪴👏🏻👏🏻

    Great information on these beauties, b/c than can be a bit tricky at repot time!

    • @thenaturecompany

      they are so forgiving if we just give them a chance lol too often we remove root volume when they need it and then expect them to be beautiful for us 😉

    Great informative video! Thank you!! If my bifoliates are showing new root groth now, but it coming into winter with shorter days, should I still repot, or wait until spring? I feel like if i wait, my plant will be past it's time with new root growth.

    • @thenaturecompany
      @thenaturecompany  10 днів тому

      if the new roots are coming do the repot now , the bifoliate Cattleya are less season dependant for repotting and rather when your plant is rooting is the best time . 👍

    Interesting information on yellow (ish) Catts as I have a few. Do you grow any of your Catts in inorganic media like lava rock?

    • @thenaturecompany
      @thenaturecompany  6 місяців тому +1

      We have started to move a lot of them into inorganic media like leca recently but often i still add some bark as during tomes of the year our humidity levels get low and the media would dry out too quickly . lava rock is not easy to come by here

    What a great video! I have seen one very popular lady here, saying you should cut off all old roots in catleya's when you repot them - as they will die anyways. Is that true? And also, I noticed you said to cut roots - wil they not die if you cut them?

    • @thenaturecompany
      @thenaturecompany  6 місяців тому

      no this is not true , I only trim roots that have been growing in the air for a long time and are now not going to adapt to the dark wetter environment a pot will give the roots that I trim will start to branch and grow . If you do cut off all the roots you have to be certain you are repotting the cattleya at the right time or your plant will struggle for a long time . I hope this helps
