I just received a few orchids and didn't have the slightest idea how not to let them die. After watching your video I have a better understanding of orchids and their roots system.
Thank so much for this video. I should have educated myself so…… much earlier in my young days when I would purchase orchids from grocery stores or given as gifts & I would over watered them as result literally kill them. ( because of ignorance) for Mother’s Day this year my youngest son gave me a store bought orchid. Thanks to modern media I came on your channel & now I have learned how to take care them. Thank you again.😊
Springtime here and the stores are full of orchids for sale. I've been hesitant to buy one, but not after seeing this video. Very nice job explaining orchid care!
Using just orchid bark wasn’t letting my orchid take up enough moisture, water just runs right through. A mix of orchid bark and sphagnum moss seems to be a good idea to keep some moisture around. I rescued an orchid with only one inch long root and setting it in a Tupperware with sphagnum moss and keeping it moist has grown four new roots in only a month! I’m so excited he’s not dead 😅
@@sharynloshakoff5404 ooohh no… Don’t use the “ice cube” watering method. It can actually harm, freeze the orchids vellemen which protects the root inside. Orchids are tropical plants. Freezing cold water should never be used while watering, this can shock the orchid. Try using room temp to tepid warm water to water or quick soak your orchids. Good luck 👍🏼 happy planting.
A friend just bought me an orchid so this will be extremely helpful. I usually kill plants pretty quickly. I’m really excited to have learned more. Thank you so much.
Great information and presented in a way that's easy to understand. Many thanks to this gentleman and his wife -- my supermarket phals appreciate it, too!
This is the video I’ve needed !! I have had four orchid plants for 3 years one flowered again a year later but now none of them have The leaves are healthy but now I know why it can’t be it’s full glory I knew not to over water but now I know it’s the pot poor orchids I’m gonna fix them and repot them properly 💖
I guess I will have to go get some orchid pots, and then I will get the orchid “soil” ! Thank You! Open up my eyes for growing my beautiful beautiful orchids
Thank you so much for this video. My grocery store orchid was a gift that somehow I've kept alive for over a year. I water it with 3-4 ice cubes once a week. Hopefully now I'll be able to keep it alive even longer!
Hard water is not good for orchids. And do not use ice cubes as has been advocated by some growers. The best water to use is room temperature reverse osmosis water or bottled distilled water. Do not use the type of distilled water that has had perfume or scent added and that is used in steam irons. The scent is harmful to orchids.
Thank you very much for the detailed and clear explanation on this video. I will use this information when I buy my next orchid and try a terra cotta pot. Best wishes from Toronto.
Thank you for a wonderful and very informative video, I just bought some beautiful orchids and really wanted to take care of them the right way, you answered all my questions and I feel less worried. I hope to see more of your videos.
I kept mine in same pot that It came in. Suddenly it flowered.I have four flowers on it. Ill leave it like that for now. I guess next time I should check it.
I find that growing phalenopsis orchids are the easiest to care for. I have had good luck regrowing air roots from the shriveled plant crown before I knew that the moss kept the roots too wet. I get my orchids to rebloom every year. I have trouble with my pseudo bulb type not wanting to rebloom
I received one from a friend for my birthday in April, boy do I wish I had watched this when I got it. Needless to say, it’s a little over a month and I over watered it. I repotted it but I didn’t take all that stuff off. There are no more flowers on it either. I may purchase another and try to pass it off as the same orchid LOL. Now that I know how to take care of it hopefully it will last longer.
Oh I’m so worried about this store bought orchid I got for my birthday! I have sphagnum and bark and perlite but not enough bark so hopefully the blend will work better than it being packed and condensed into only sphagnum 😅
When you talked about repotting in orchid bark you showed a dry medium. But I have always understood the orchid bark should be soaked in warm water before using?
Recently repot some of my phalenopsis orchids because one I discovered the medium had broken down and had mold. the roots started to not look good. When I repot it had a smell so that was worrisome. some of the other orchids were also in older medium so I decided to repot them before they get to that stage. I decided to repot while they were done blooming. And another I needed to check the roots and it wasn't doing well in the pot I put it on as well as the orchid medium the bark ships were too large and I assume it had too many air pockets that collected water. But it was my first real trying to save an orchid from my colleagues who potted her in sand from the work garden guess it also went through shock from the ordeal of everything. It has a terminal spike so i am not sure how much longer this poor orchid is going to stay alive for. I'm trying my best to give it the best care I can until it's leaves are done. It made a keiki I want to give back to my colleague. So she can take it home.
This is a great tutorial thank you. I’m just trying to deal with root rot on some of my orchids. I use plastic pots but I like the idea of the terracotta I wonder if it’s possible to drill holes in the side of a regular terracotta pot without breaking it?
I enjoyed your video. I bought a new pot, and some repotting bark so now I just have to get the nerve to repot it. It’s still flowering beautifully so I kinda hate to disturb it. Should I go ahead and repot now? I got it for Mother’s Day in May and it’s now June 18th. It still looks beautiful. Suggestions?
What if the plant looks wrinkled/droopy and all the roots were brown/rotted from the store. Can I get roots by putting the bare bottom in water for a while.
I have to repot my orchid, It has roots sticking out, should I leave the roots that are above the pot the same or cover them when I repot? should I be using a bigger pot? Thanks
The roots that are sticking up are the Orchid's air roots, so you will leave them sticking up out of the soil when you re-pot. And yes, use a slightly bigger pot.
Thanks for your question. Neither Diatomaceous Earth nor BT should affect earthworms. DE works on the exoskeleton which earthworms don't have, and BT works on caterpillars.
Great video! Lots of information. But where did that terracotta pot with the holes come from? I have looked everywhere for one with no luck. Anyone know?
Very informative! I am not sure if I should repot my orchid or to wait, it was bought as a gift on a really cold day and many of the flowers look droopy. I was thinking maybe to let it settle in the warm house for a week or 2 but it basically came in the same type of pot that the video showed. I don't want to mess with it too much since I have no idea how it was treated inside the store.
Sorry if this question has already been asked. But where do you get the clay pots for orchids with the slits? I am in Canada and have never seen them. Thank you in advance.
How long do orchids live I've had an orchid since 2007/8 the roots are everywhere, it's on a bathrook windowsill ive never looked after it ever and it always flowers
If it is dry you could water every day or two. If it growing in the correct medium most of the water will just run out and keep it from getting too wet. Let the medium dry out between waterings.
This is one of the best videos I've seen that explains orchids and how to re-pot them. Thank you!!
Thanks!

I like to use rainwater to water all my Orchids.
Even in Winter, here in the North East I melt snow ❄️! 😂

Dont use ice anymore! It won't bloom.

Can you repot an orchid if all flowers havent entirely bloomed? The roots of 1 I just received are overflowing it's current pot
It's normal for an orchid to have some aerial roots. They take moisture out of the air.
