John's 'Pork pie hat" [Mingus] must be one of the most extraordinary pieces of live guitar playing ever witnessed by anyone, anywhere, any time.

22:58 "Bueno, ahora mi amigo Lorenzo y yo os vamos a tocar unas improvisaciones.... Entre dos aguas".

This was the original trio! Saw them in Paris. Larry and John played some jazz at these concerts that mixed well with the flamenco. too bad Larry had major drug problems at the time. Would love to see Larry and John play together again before they get too old.
They all really got along, particularly Paco & John, who chased Paco in the first place for these marvellous ventures. And no doubt those good vibes made the music flow (even better). When ADM took the turn, it wasn't the same anymore. The reasons are well documented by the guys themselves.
Yeah, they could have done some more fantastic things if they had gotten together again. I still enjoy listening to their work together on Larry's "Spaces" album from 1969 with Chick Corea, Miroslav Vitous and Billy Cobham. Incidentally, I had heard about Larry's drug problems. As I was watching the video (before reading any comments), when Larry would leave the stage I was thinking to myself "There he goes to get some backstage blow". R.I.P. Larry, and Paco too.
McLaughlin said he preferred playing with Larry Coryell because Coryell had more feeling in his playing than Di Meola. Unfortunately Coyell had pulled out of The Guitar Trio by the time they toured Australia and he was relpaced by Di Meola .This tour was supported by Steve Morse playing an acoustic set. However Di Meola did not travel together with McLaughlin and Delucia and it was rumoured that there was Di Meola threw a tantrum before embarking on the tour and that Steve Morse was a back up in case Di Meola pulled out of the tour.
This series of performances were the last time McLaughlin played steel string acoustic guitar. As soon as Larry left the trio and Al Dimeola joined, McLaughlin switched to nylon string acoustic guitar, and somehow with that change he also lost some (or most?) of the magic in his playing. This period (guitar trio in 1979) catches McLaughlin at the very peak of his performing power. He never managed to recapture that magnificent force of guitar playing ever since. But thank goodness it was documented for posterity in these amazing videos.
+Alex Bunardzic "He never managed to recapture that magnificent force of guitar playing ever since". You're entitled to your opinion, no matter how crazy it is. You're probably aware that he plays more than just acoustic, right? Or that he played acoustic in John McLaughlin Trio?
+Alex Bunardzic Actually, the part of your comment I was referring to was "[h]e never managed to recapture that magnificent force of guitar playing ever since." Good luck trying to find someone to agree that his playing for the last 35 years was never as good - or as forceful, or magnificent - as before that
