@Guitar Overkill I love the sound of ovations.. I've never understood the hate they get.. and yes, they are super convenient n comfortable. Groundbreaking idea and technology for the time. I understand you don't get that super traditional sound, but that's okay, not every guitar needs to sound the same.
You can clearly see Bireli comes from Gipsy Jazz background, Al has his own unique style. Birely has more advanced improvisations, Al is simpler, but also cleaner.
Al Di Meola brought him to Gaia and until one night, I played with him in splach (Porto) with Paleca!. Larry Coryell played "Matosinhos em Jazz" and the gypsy set us up! Wasn't it Adalberto? Scheduled to act at Theatro Circo in Braga and just did not appear and the worst is that businessman and musicians, for two days did not know about him ... As I record, it was the first time a musician had failed me!
Bireli is just beyond, he can hear Al di Meola impro and starts to make similar phrases! The opposite does not happen. Al di Meola is well trained and a kick-ass guitarist but they are not at the same level.
As great as Di Meola/Paco/McLaughlin were, and they were the forever masters at the acoustic trio, the final version of Spain here was better than any Di Meola did with Paco & McLaughlin. Because these three guys had fun. Massive, more loose, more fun.

@@JonHop1 Whenever I play a gig, people always come up and ask, How do get that sound? You have to have onboard eq inside an Ovation.

Totally true ! He has more melodic idea than Al and play technical stuff only when its necessary :)
Birely is much getter at jazz, Al has cleaner sound though. His solos are simpler, but very fast and every note sounds perfectly clean.
DiMeola is no Jazz player. He's jazzy.

Ovation guitars sucked. Thinner sounding than a one reed harmonica with those crappy pizeo's.
amazing playing and some of the worst guitar tones ever produced.. 80's was rough for acoustic guitars.
