The fact that McLaughlin shows up to play with a bunch of undergrads on their big night makes him a trillion times cooler than he already was 12 years before i was born. may we all aspire to his hipness
This guy is pretty cool! I saw him play lots of times at small clubs in Manhattan
Always is....THE MAN
@@lankytor6396 Princeton Gym 1973.
No it doesn’t not really!
He’s a working musician and a dirty old man !
And who wouldn’t be?
It’s a lonely life on the road…..
Whether or not under-grads can “make the grade” musically to suit an ego of this guys enormity, they have “the goods”’in another way!
I met Mcglogjlin back stage when I was 21 and my cousin 22, the only reason we were entertained was cos of our 20 year old girlfriends incredible beauty.
She tried to talk to him about her violin and he just tried to get in her pants!
He then begrudged to talk to us and I said “I notice you still have very self consciously ‘spiritual’ or ‘turban-envy’ titles to your songs but after I lived in India for months and months as a teenager and had life defining experiences there I’ve become a bit cynical about any Idea the culture there is any more or less tuned-than anywhere”
He butted in “Well if you’re cynical then I am SORRY for you!!!!”
My eyes pricked with utterly shocked tears and my cousin “squared-on” to our (prior to the encounter”) musical hero, saying “that’s a bit MACH!” ( he sounded normal til the last word came out ‘cockney’ (London street accent)
I knew if Mr Guitar had forgotten his manners one more time his lip and nose would nave been all over his face!”
I said to my cousin “let’s go” we said to our girlfriend what are you doing?”
She said (with “Get me away from THIS CREEP!” eyes) “yes, me too”.
Remember “everyone” every little tin god nearly always has his feet, like the rest of us, made of clay x x x
@@ruthberesford4554 gonna be honest after the first paragraph or 2 I got completely lost and had no clue what you were talking about
A big thanx to McLaughlin for guiding these great young musicians! Rasika Shekar´s voice is so incredible that I gratefully call this tune "My Favorite sings".
Rasika Shekar. Some of the most beautiful flute & vocals I’ve heard!
Huge McLaughlin fan but her vocalizing on My Favorite Things steals the show. Wow.
Just when you think you can't love this man more for what he has achieved. You get this. I'm sure that these young musicians will treasure this moment for the rest of their lives.
The Indian girl on flute is awesome i love the ending where they are playing off the drum solo awesome musicianship
Musical Perfection
Everything. John. Her. Piano player. Bassist. Drummer.
All of it.
Wow...
These students, who were graduating from Berklee, were given the wonderful opportunity to play music with a seasoned musical veteran. John McLaughlin is the perfect example of an artist who has stayed in constant exploration mode throughout his long and illustrious career. Yes, there are glitches and missteps in this performance, however, overall I find the power of mentoring in this inspiring above all. Peace to all.
On stage, with the man, big audience...I'd pee
And money, money, money lol
Thanks for pointing out the flaws, Mr. Perfection.
School musicals studies have killed music, Mclaughlin never learn at school.
seasoned musical veteran is such an understatement; he's one of the uppermost master guitarists
This is just SO wonderful. What a world it is when Mahavishnu, a legend in his lifetime, can play with these talented kids and help them along...

Somebody give that drummer an award! Brilliant!
No shit. His rhythm is SPOT on in the trading 4s part at the end
For the benefit of everyone who is asking, the guitar McLaughlin is playing here is Mike Sabre Custom. He mainly used it with Remember Shakti. The bridge has midi equipped saddles...probably why a lot of people dislike John's tone.
Hate to admit this, but I never heard of John McLaughlin until this evening. I was swept away! A fan for life. This was an overwhelming experience listening to this performance.
Better late than never
Enjoy
Rasika’s Voice was a brilliant touch... John loves the Indian energy...
absolutely beyond words! Trane's music, J. McLaughlin and a group of enthusiastic young musicians is the best of cocktails!
How could you put a pop up ad in the middle of such a beautiful performance?! What disruption of pranah. Buzz kill. Barbarians. Great video.
I saw him decades ago in a little venue where everyone sat on wrestling mats on the floor while the musicians played on a small stage within three feet of you . This place was called “ The Great Southeast Music Hall “ in Atlanta. They served draft beer in various sized buckets with their logo on the side. He was fantastic as was his band.
The language of music is incredible ♥
Nothing like being 'in the groove' with John. He was my high school ear training instructor back in the 70's w/Cobham & Hammer. None of my friends could hang with him. But I did, to this day. His musical journey takes you on a world tour.
Keeping up with John in his prime?! That's a hell of an accomplishment in and of itself. Damn.
I've been John's fan for decades. One of the greatest on guitar that ever lived! Honorary doctorate well deserved. I really enjoyed this performance.
Something wonderful and timeless about Coltrane's ghost haunting this version with classical flute and Indian singing, JM's peerless electric brilliance and the intelligent assonance of the piano, bass and drums. Magical.
19:00
Just a slight correction... that is not a classical flute
Indian flute (bansuri maybe?)
Thanks Derek
@@derekgunn1914 It's bansuri 😂
Rasika's flute playing and vocals transport me to the realm of delight !
what have i just listened to....heavenly
Proof that Music travels through time and space, regardless of sex, age, or origin. These Berklee students were very lucky to have the opportunity to play with McLaughlin, but they are also very talented, so they deserve it. Thank you for posting.
This video has been my companion since the past earthquakes and has given me peace and incredible spirits, I could not be more grateful
John has earned his place among the very best guitarists on the Planet . Loved his collaborations with Al DiMeola and Paco. Pat Metheny. Alan Honsworth & Phil Keaggy are among just a handful of players who play at this level. Great stuff!
He has also magical collaborations with the late great Larry Coryell. John is the greatest living guitarist according to Jeff Beck who is no slouch.
I liked the whole performance a lot. What I find kind of amusing is what happens at 14:40 where McLaughlin bends that "off" note and the pianist rushes to widen his harmony and suddenly it sounds inside again. That's also the point where the bass player apparently loves it the most. Magic of a live jazz performance.
Impressive moment on the pianist's part there.
Andreas Devig Very nice observation. It's a very nice counterpoint adjustment, in which the rhythm and melody section are in some interesting form complimentary to one another, the bass creates tension and the piano resolves the tension.
That bent note almost signals the bass player to duel solo with him :)
scammers hahahaha
Bband...minor add Maj 7 not reaaly that off...12 tone....
John has always been in my conjuring of musical resonance into sparks. These young musicians give me and I hope! That Spark to believe on. I just Have to Say This!
Beautiful!!! McLaughlin is a graceful genius!!
Hats down to Berklee dudes. Joshua, Hooni, Tabari, Rasika. You are great! Hats down to the amazing sound engineering team to deliver such a transparent mix!
I'm so enjoying this while grading papers and sipping my coffee. One never knows how he/she/they impact the lives of others across time. Thank you.
Great comment johnnie
I always find fascinating how different jazz musicians interpret a song. Its mind boggling. The John Coltrane Quartet' s interpretation of this song was out of this world, may McCoy Tyner's soul rest in peace
John McLaughlin, truly the master of
perfect "dissonance", and improvisation, !!!!!!
The piano solo! I love his inside/outside playing.
Every single one of these musicians is a master and poet in their art...
Everyone's talking about My Favorite Things and not that gutting...staggering...haunting....version of Stella by Starlight...I can't sleep now that I've heard that.
That was all so absolutely beautiful. How talented these young musicians all are. I was in tears.
Her flute playing is so wonderful but when she started to sing it blew me away.
Trust me she is not really that good as you're praising her. Quite bad even she is. You haven't listened to much Indian classical I can tell. I can give you some extra ordinary stuffs if you want.
simply this is not indian classical music, but jazz
I'd be interested in your "quite extraordinary stuffs". I HAVE been listening to Indian classical music since 1970 or so, here in America it was difficult to get ANYTHING except for Ravi Shankar & Ali Akbar Khan when LP's (those round black 12" things) were all you could get. I sure have a lot of them... The last 15 years or so it's opened up, so I do know about Kartik Seshadri, Indrajit Banerjee etc. My current faves would be Kala Ramnath, Anoushka and Debashish Bhattacharya (yes, I play guitar & Steel guitar, fo-ever too). But I don't know much about flute players and vocalists, and I SURE can't afford to buy 10 cd's to get 2 great ones, which is about the average. So any recommendations would be great! I tend to like the spooky dark stuff, NOT the fluffy intentionally-always-happy music (Which DOES kinda rule out Ravi's music until he got his mind out of hock to that "Ambassador of Indian Music" crap and began PLAYING again in the '80's (he's said so himself) Thanks.
That vocal thing she did is called ALAP. And the flute intro is pure Indian. You're welcome. It's neither jazz nor Indian Classical,i it's kind of a fusion. John has been doing it for quite a while.
of course, it's fusion. Quite all contemporary western music is "fusion" and McLaughlin did "jazz fusion" since early 1970. Also the Shakti project is fusion. Here we can listen Bansuri, a bit of raga, jazz, electric guitar, some electronics......
I wish I could get that drummer in my group.... He's a great listener!!!! They all are first class! The flute sounds freaking beautiful!
The 609👎’s must be big fans of the the Cowsill’s! One of the best versions of one of the best songs ever!!
Haven't heard chorus like that since the '80s....makes me nostalgic for those times.
Nice tribute by young people and one established great to Coltrane's classic, especially the echo of McCoy Tyner.
Gorgeous. Everyone shines.
John Coltrane revisited, avec douceur, poésie et grâce. C'est sublime...
I love it when old masters are playing with the youngsters! We can see, we can hear as they pass to baton! It so great! Thanks so much!
Beautiful! I loved the crossover of genres that John has such a great understanding of, and I agree the drummer, Josh Wheatley, was superb.
She's incredible...but these young musicians all are. What a wonderful program...which includes my musical guiding light...Mahavishnu!

Fantastic - came here for McLaughlin but the whole band was amazing - beautiful playing.
Johnny is a supreme master of music.
John McLaughlin never ceases to amaze me. But I should also mention the other musicians, what a great performance by everyone!
This is a true beautiful amalgamation of East and West...
Beautiful rendition of a classic song. It is now one of MY favorite things!
I could listen to this forever
the genuis of john mcglaughlin....i researched an ad from circa 1959......called little johnny mglaughlin...master at jazz.....blew me away.......my fav things always brings me to tears.....and i thank god....that i too am an accomplished musician.....thanks to little johnny
Starting off with that crazy good flute playing was unexpected and supremely satisfying.
The singer and flautist was particularly great. Never heard indian style singing in this context but it sounds wonderful
Or just listen to shanti by McLaughlin that was his first record after studying in India for years
Yes, same here. But it works, doesn't it?
Or listen to John Coltrane to hear the strong Indian Influence in his music. So she fits right in beautifully here.
Have you heard L Shankar's album Eternal Light? Although predominantly a violin album it features some wonderful singing and one track in which his full 5 and a half octave range is used to full effect.
N0rmad I think her Dad played at Woodstock and recorded with the Beatles.
The transition from stella by starlight to my favourite things is one of those soul comforting symphonic pieces of music which I will never forget
This guy on the keys and the girl playing flute and singing....joy to the ears...and with John Mclaughlin and all the band just wonderful......tears of joy
All amazing musicians. This is so delightful, fantastic!
Wonderful! Love the flute and vocals, the whole thing is brilliant! John McLaughlin anyhow is one of my heroes sice the old My Goals Beyond and Shakti Times.
A remarkable thing on Mr Mclaughlin during all his brilliant musical road is his generosity playing with musicians of all corner of the world..
Huge fan, of John ....very inspirational and consistent playing always expanding with new things...Timeless!
Sublime...sheer beauty...
Ilove this piece. Everything about this vid is good. Good stage, good filming, great sound
good song, and great musicians. 20 mins of Serenity in the modern world. pure music is good for ones health.
Never heard of JM until a nerdy mate of mine way back when lent me “ love devotion and surrender “ . He said have a listen and it will change your world.
I did and it it did !
John is master amongst masters , a guitarists guitarist and a wonderful human being.
This track is so sublime...love the way he lets the other musicians have the stage.
Music binds us all together. Thanks John and the other performing students from Berklee. This was refreshing.
I was out of the room when the vocals cut in.
It sounded like a wonderful muted trumpet. What a brilliant voice!
Just fabulous, what a wonderful experience for these bright young musicians to PLAY live with a MASTER, very inspiring and emotive... Beautiful rendition in the Spirit of COLTRANE ...
Love the bit at the end where they make the phrases shorter and shorter, playing a little game together, just wonderful!
Absolutely love this!!
JOHN MAC LAUGLHIN IS ONE VERY GOOD GUITARIST WITH MANY INFLUENCES FROM THIS PERSONNAL PLAY. RESPECT MR MAC LAUGLHIN. JACKYFAN 👍
Jacky Chazaubenay miles Davis had a song called John Mclaughlin.. need I say more
Amazing performance by everyone involved. Love the flute!
I can’t understand why there are over 600 thumbs down on this video ?
Please can the thumbs down people explain why they didn’t like such a fantastic performance by such accomplished musicians.
As a wanna be be musician I can only fantasise about being a tenth as good as these guys.
Great job guys 👍🥁🇬🇧
Probably they are Dua Lipa fans...
The joy they bring!
I have no doubt, John Coltrane is smiling in the Heaven!
so joyful, and what a thrill for the young musicians. I sure hope they can pass that joy on to their future bandmates just like John McL passed it on to them that evening
Absolutely awesome
Love the harmonics! They just lift it to the next level.
Gracias
Fun Fact half of these musicians are now Asst instructors in Berklee
Absolutely brilliant!!
Awesome, outstanding, spot-on, OMG- however you say it. This ensemble of fine artists lends credence to less is better. Their syncopations, private tonal inspirations each contribute to a memorable interpretation of an American Broadway Classic, taking nothing away yet expanding luxuriously on the rich smooth theme. Delighted.
Maravilhoso e emocionante! Saudações do Brasil ao grande John McLaughlin!
Ele me "faz a cabeça" desde o início dos anos 70. Virtuoso. (Mahavishnu Orchestra).
This was amazing.
Always incredible
Thank You,John!!!!!!!!
Espetacular John Mclaughlin, que superbanda o acompanha, parabéns a todos os musicos.
La grande classe ! Bravo John McLaughlin et bravo aux jeunes musiciens
Amazing young talents. Thank you for putting on a wonderful show :)
WOW, simply amazing. I absolutely love the part where the drummer, the flautist and John play together at the end of the concert. So much fun.
What a gentleman John is, the way he so enthusiastically introduces the other musicians
Holy *$&% that voice.
God Bless these young musicians
This is so great! It has really lifted my spirits!
Fantastic! Beautifully staged, sound mixed and filmed too - congratulations to all involved, and hats off to Berklee at Valencia for recognising the extraordinary achievements of John McLaughlin with an honorary degree. It's extraordinary that institutions in Britain have not conferred similar awards.
haven't they? disgraceful if so. but not untypical of 'em.
Hey! Petrucci is a grad, isn't he?
he's a typical "hung around for a few months, jammed a lot, got bored with the curriculum and quit" type. like a lot of other great jazz musicians.
The restraint in that piano solo, but the note choices and rhythm!
This is extremely heartwarming and touching.Thank you mr. Mc Laughlin...it all sounds lovely
Simply glorious.
Wonderful. It pays homage to both Coltrane and McCoy Tyner, while bringing new and refreshing elements to the piece. Absolutely love it.
In a World where materialism has virtually drowned human spirituality and the simple endeavour for Truth in Art, this short piece by these young musicians, guided by the Grand Master John Mc Laughlin has renewed not only my energies and optimism for the future of Jazz, but has vitiated the entire genre of Music.
Totally agree. Do note that 'vitiate' means "spoil or impair the quality or efficiency of". But you meant invigorated, vitalized, inspired, animated, potentiated, enabled, potentiated etc. And yeah pretty amazing vitality and joy in the present for a man his age too.
Apologies Jeff, How right you are, I had not read my comment until you pointed it out, and of course I made a typo, the word should have read "invitiate" meaning purified, this was meant to be a reference to the lowering of technical abilities, and acceptance of lower standards brought about in composition today by the mundane, and the concomitant search to " purify the waters" so to speak. Thanks for pointing that out.
BEAUTIFUL MUSIC...THE SINGER WAS AMAZING!
Ha compuesto john algunas canciones ultimamente, porque asíme parece que ya entró a alguna moda de arrobamiento y admiración por el material de otros maestros . Mil disculpas por criticar a mc laughlin
Take your speech somewhere else.
John, Always great to see you perform. Great empathy and respect among the players.
Just brilliant. Such great young talent and a brilliant old one still with us
