- I tested out the Panasonic Lumix S1H Video camera and 50mm S Pro Leica Lens. It's an amazing video camera packed full of features but I found it a little difficult to navigate through the menus. However, after seeing the image, I felt completely different about the S1H...
Big thanks to Panasonic Lumix for lending me the Lumix S1H and lens! :D

Interesting... I know everyone's got different preferences, but I think you're the first person I've heard who's said Panasonic's UI was hard to use.
I was taken back from that too lol i have shot every system, Panasonic is the best lol
I'm so glad you liked the S1H! I was finally able to purchase my dream camera a little under a year ago and so far the S1H has been so much fun to shoot with. I'm coming from a Lumix G7 with manual vintage lenses so even if the S1H had good auto focus, I probably would have stuck with Manual as I've been pulling focus on my run-n-gun shoots my whole life.
Here are some key features I noticed you left out (and I hope you get to play around with before returning the camera to Panasonic).
-Dual Native ISO [ 640 & 4,000 when shooting in V-Log ]
-The S Pro 50mm is both a focus by wire and linear lens so you can cock back the focus ring like a shotgun to instantly switch to manual.
-You can import up to 4 custom LUTs and shoot with your favorite look in both live view and playback. [ I have a false color LUT to check my exposure on the fly ]
-Nearly every button the the camera body is customizable. [ I made short cuts to my S1H body to identically match any physical button seen on a C300 mkii ]
-You can essentially turn an S1H rig into an ARRI Alexa Mini with the S1Alex Luts from Emotive Color which turns your Vlog into ARRI Color Science.
-Check Waveforms and Vector Scopes with the press of a button long before importing to Premiere or DaVinci
-The stabilzation motors for the sensor can move to all four corners and stitch an Ultra High Resolution Photo [ Almost Medium Format Quality ]
-You can choose between Shutter Angle or Shutter Speed
-In the settings you can choose some lens barrels to be a 180° or 360° throw [ Customizable follow focus accuracy! ]
-If paired with an Atomos Ninja V you can shoot up to 6K 12Bit 422 ProRes RAW [ BRAW like the Pocket6K if paired with a BlackMagic monitor ]
-The flippy screen is also a tiltly screen [ It's so that you can still shoot from a high angle even if all you ports are in use ]
-UNLIMITED POWER thanks to the fan [ No recording limits or over heating issues, like, ever ]
-Weather and dust resistant so you can shoot worry free down a ski slope or in the middle of a hurricane
-Two freaking record buttons [ Amazing when awkwardly holding a gimbal and can't reach between the arms ]
You can definitely tell the people at Panasonic are out to build their own dream cameras and jam pack their products full of features professional are going to love. Thanks for letting me fan boy in your comment section.
Thank you 🤩🙏🏻🎥
Hahaha you've surprised me! Panasonic is the most intuitive systems I have been using. I have used a few (Fuji, Sony and Panasonic).
Agreed. I feel quite comfortable with the menu system.
Since I have been watching all panasonic camera reviews, three things I hear Reviewers say about panasonic cameras, BAD AUTOFOCUS, GREAT STABLIZATION AND AMAZING OR INTUITIVE MENU SYSTEM, and more other things. For me to hear you say panasonic Menu is not intuitive or hard..wow! That's the first time. You even compared it to Sony camera with one of the worse Menu system? I was blown away 😳, and then you said that panasonic lumix Menu system is harder than them, I own both Sony and Lumix S1H, so I know. what I don't know much is Canon Menu, so I wouldn't say anything about that cause I don't. But to compare Lumix menu to Sony menu..hmmmm!!
I guess you are really a Canon person.
@@goddyab Totally agree with you!
Been waiting for this one!
🤩🙏🏻
I’ve been looking at this camera a lot! And I think you may have convinced me to order it finally! 😆
Woo! 🥳🥳🥳🤩🙏🏻 let me know
Your should! Have shot professionally for years. It’s the tops out there. Also own an a7siii for Vlog type shoots that benefit from autofocus. But the S1H, Vlog, incredible IBIS, now braw! It’s the sweet spot for a can-do everything camera
I do miss the quality of the image after seeing it now! So good. What do you think to the Sony image in comparison?
@@SamHolland They're so close when settings are dialed in. Image quality seems to be basically the same after grading, but I much prefer the usability of the S1H for cinema style shooting with manual lenses and love the workflow. Braw has been awesome this past week to the video assist 12g! But have too many projects that benefit from autofocus, so the A7siii is my gimbal wide camera for UA-cam clients.
Thank you for the insight. All good points 🤩🎥🙏🏻
Wow!! 🤩🤩 you lucky boy getting that opportunity 👌🏻 hope you’re doing good x
Another great video Sam! Interesting to hear it’s better than the C70 in some ways. 👏👏👏
Thanks man! 🙏🏻 always appreciate you tuning in.
Yeh the image is so nice!!! Made me question everything for a moment 😂
Nicee video Holland!! I have the S1 and i Love it! The AF is bad but because of the quality of the screen manually focusing is really easy!
Thank you 🙏🏻 yeh I need to learn manual focus better anyway. Haha thanks for watching 🎥🤩
very impressed with the quality of this camera.... ive never used a panasonic but this looks super good
Thanks man. Yeah it looks so good. I was pleasantly surprised and blown away!!! 😩 I’ve been spoilt 😂🎥
Sold my S1h to get the A7S iii. Then Sold the A7s iii (tired of picture profiles), got Olympus OMD M1 Mark iii. Love this Camera. Found a good deal for the S1H again on eBay ($2800), and bough it as my 2nd camera! I can attest to all the thing you say here including the AF. On the silver lining, like you said, It forced me to earn auto focusing. Great Review, mate!
Ah that is interesting to know. Glad I’m not the only one who thinks so 😂 great image though. Thank you for watching. Stay tuned fir more 🤩🙏🏻🎥
It's surprising that you like the E-M1 mark III more than the A7S III. What do you like about it more than the better specced and newer Sony? Also surprising that you use a S1H as a B cam to the Olympus.
Lumix autofocus is why I stopped vlogging with the G7. It is a great budget 4k camera with pretty nice colors but auto focus is a big need for me. But yeah it did teach me how to use manual focus for weddings and dynamic shots and that is a great skill to have! That camera you got there is THICC by the way hahaha
Yeh man so true!
That is a good point. Using manual focus is a great skill to have 💪🏻👌🏻🎥
😂 thanks again for watching brother
Great video, Sam! I guess the S1H is kind of a specialist camera, so not really designed for content creators like us - plus it’s an absolute unit 😂
Totally. It would be my camera for “proper” videos and canon for vlogging for sure 😉 good for the old biceps though 😂🎥🏋🏻♀️
@@SamHolland haha yeah for sure man! 😂💪
great review!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Great review mate, loving your channel. I just got the S1H and I see you've shifted to the S5. I know the AF on S5 was much better, isn't the S1H equal that now that there's a firmware upgrade?
Hi. Thank you 🙏🏻🤩 I’m honestly not sure because I don’t have the S1H anymore to compare it to. But I did try the GH6 and that AF is great 🎥 hope this helped
@@SamHolland Thanks man! Love your content.
My pleasure! Thank YOU 🤩🙏🏻🎥
why you're so underrated?
🤩🙏🏻🎥
I love Lumix cameras, but for sure in the area of usability & AF it's a bit on the hard side to use. But they have so many features & super nice image quality, I love them.
So true. The image is worth it if you can master MF in all situations 💪🏻 thanks as always for watching man! 🤩🙏🏻🎥
Man, I like tha look of this set! Panasonic is great! The one I want is S5. :)
🙏🏻 apparently the S5 is very similar just in a smaller, lighter body! Let me know if you go for it. 🤩🎥
Thanks for watching
Coming from a GH5 user I can completely relate to the frustrations, they get better but always there. The image always surprises me though
Hi Rob. Ah really? That’s interesting. So it doesn’t get much easier? Yeh image is so nice!!! Thanks for watching 🙏🏻🎥
@@SamHolland Yea thinks like autofocus you just get good at manual ha. Also NEVER run out of battery on a take it corrupts the whole file. I do a dummy battery to my monitor now with NPF970's. Thanks for making!
Oooo that’s worth noting! Thanks for the heads up!!! 🤩👌🏻

Oooo that’s worth noting! Thanks for the heads up!!! 🤩👌🏻
What are your thoughts on the R6 vs S1H in terms of video capabilities?
S1H has a “better” video quality look in my opinion. Since using it and coming back to the R6, I miss it BUT I love how easy the R6 is to use and how light weight it is. I hope that helps 🙏🏻 thanks for watching
How did you get the camera get sent to you, I am a freelance cinematographer, and I’ve been trying to get sponsored by lumix, I want to try out one of their lenses
Which firmware was on the cam? The latest one has pretty decent AF, especially with pro lenses.
I made sure I updated to the latest as soon as I got it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great camera. 🙏🏻 thanks for watching
Strange it worked that bad. Before the 2.2 version I never used it, but nowadays more and more. It is not perfect, but decent enough.
Nice camera, but still Canon is my tool! I had different brands, but Canon fits me the best! One thing I hoping for Canon that the skip the recording limit in the next cameras!
Yeah I love Canon too. And that would be nice! 👌🏻🎥
Video specs identical to S5 ll minus 6k open gate? Thanks.
Penny is a great company when it comes to cameras, I can't decide if I want the s1h or a second S5
Curious which did you end up going for?
@@whatughbeast495 the S1h, since I work Fulltime with my Camera ieed unlimited recording in 10 bit 4k and All Intra Codec. And a full size hdmi. I made also a youtube Video about my decision
If you pick up and shake your s1h, in various directions, with the power on, but no lens attached, do you hear anything? Do you hear / feel sounds of parts gently shifting or any rattling noises or is it dead quiet? I’m asking, because you have one and I recently dropped my padded camera bag from about three feet and I’m trying to figure out if the noise I’m hearing was present before the fall. In other words, that it’s normal. My camera functions perfectly fine and the fall wasn’t super hard, but still, would like to hear from a real user. Thanks for any and all help!
Hi. Thanks for the question… unfortunately, I don’t own the S1H. This was a hire unit for the week so I can’t test it. I’m sorry I can’t help but I hope you figure it out. 🙏🏻🎥
@@SamHolland Thanks Sam for the quick reply.
My pleasure. Thanks for commenting and watching 🙏🏻
Canon menus aren’t user friendly, they just lack 70% of the options and customizability the Panasonic menus have making them easier to dive into
It depends what you shoot for me it is a no go for the AF in many ways. I like the colors, I like the brand but.... I need 2 ds card slot and a good AF ok manual focus is a must in so much situations but in run and gun, solo shooting ? Afffffff helps a lot :)))))
Totally 👌🏻🎥
And it does BRAW externally!
That camera looks HUGE!
With the bad focus and price, isn't it better to buy a BMPCC if it's just for video? Bad focus capabilities but incredible image.
Yeah. I think there are quite a lot of differences between those two cameras but depending on preference, for sure. Especially for the price. Thanks for watching 🤩🙏🏻🎥
A7siii vs S1h??? Cant decide!!
A7siii all day long 🙏🏻 that’s my answer and my opinion. The Sony is a newer camera so has more features too. But can’t go wrong with either
There is no one on earth that owns a Panasonic camera that hasn't mapped each and every button to do exactly what they want. Panny has the best menu system of all camera makers. Canon just has a simplistic menu compared to the S1H. I also felt how complex it was when I got the GH4/Gh5S over the Canon 60D. Now as a S1H and S1 owner, I will never go back.
Sam: No camera is perfect.
Tesal: Yep. Frustrating, but true.
Camera Conspiracies (Singing Sadly): All I want is a perfect camera. 😭
Anyway, 10K, not long now, bro. SH1 body looks aesthetically pleasing. Are you buying it? What's a Lumix log called? P-Log? L-log? 🤔
Thank you bro! 🥳🥳🥳 I think it’s V log but someone just said they do b raw too ... whatever that means 😂🙏🏻🎥
Don't complain, practice
Your low battery red warning light made me nervous. And honestly, autofocus is for beginners and amateurs. Why would anyone want the camera to dictate what you focus on?
tbh the more you say "but" the more I keep watching
😂😂😂😂 it’s like inception for cameras
how do you get try it out for free ?
There’s a form on the Panasonic website you can fill in 🙏🏻

The million dollar question in here is: Sony’s autofocus is better or Lumix’s 😂?
Sony 100% 😂 especially from the A7Siii
What a shame the AF
I know 😩
AF is much better than shown. A little research, a few settings and it will be reasonable.
@@KobusGevelspar what setting do you recomend for autofocus
