An interesting meme / troll idea that I did for a while, for when you begin leveling up a new account : "Longest road to rank 1 / diamond". It's basically just forcing yourself to say no to the OWS strats, and not being allowed to win unless you have longest road. It's also a good exercise in always being aware of your potential expansions and outs, and not locking yourself in with your placements.

the trade requests at 5:15 had me rolling lol
The 5-6-9 was too good to leave for anyone else, but it placed a big bullseye on you from the start. When the title said it was a troll setup, I wondered if you'd start with the 5-9-10. Not enough wood on the board to support that, but sometimes the obvious spot is a deathtrap.
I like the 5-2 better than the 8 resource wise for the second settle, but the numbers would have been brutal, especially since the 5 was constipated early. An expansion to the 2-6 could have gotten that rolling, but that would have been a slog. Not sure 1st position had a winning strat this game with the way the dice fell. You probably did as well with it as possible.
Honestly you really got screwed by luck this time. The sheer amount of 4’s and lack of 5’s and 6’s early gave you such a tough start. That plus the insane lack of VP Devs until the very end really made this nearly impossible. I honestly think you played exceptionally well considering how much luck wasn’t on your side
Hey Dylan, I'm saladslave and played black in this game. Got super lucky with the early 4s and didn't expect you to take the ore port as your 2nd settlement. Really close game overall, and I had a ton of fun watching from your perspective. gg!

The 5-2 with expansion to the 6-2 wheat was a stronger position since you would already have Ore, Wheat, Sheep and the 2>1 wheat port with a healthy 10 wheat production if you expand to the 6-2 wheat.
As many points of production, more starting ressource, and less variance...
This was an insane game so close to the win for you to get that close against such good opponents with the dice rolls heavily favoring them. Well played
Lmao that ending was great. Would have been hype if you had gotten that final VP but still a surprisingly competitive game given your starting placements
The fact that this game was this close just shows the level that Dylan is at compared to us common Settlers lol

as a mobile viewer many times can I suggest blowing up the chat and putting in the bottom left of the screen? you could use the space where the chat is as a space for "editors notes" or just temporarily remove the chat for that.

If I'm black, I think I build on the 4-5 ore early on and just take blue out of the game. Blue ended up cutting him off anyway.
Why isn't the 5/2 or 6 wheat better than the 8 wheat? It seems like they offer better or equal production and allocation of resources, you also get a port and more potential settle spots... the 8 wheat seems so bad but you know way more than me obviously haha
I think the Idea was the ore Port. If the ores had rolled more (6 rolled way less than 8) the ore Port would have been a good strategy I suppose

You didn't invent the concept of future trades. People have been doing future trades in Monopoly tournaments since the 1970s. The concept of future non-binding deals was something I was using since the first game I played due to already having experience with it.

Future trades weren’t invented by dylighted…maybe popularized by him, but back before UA-cam those were happening in games I’d played in (and also people raging against the idea and having house rules of no future trades etc). Be willing to bet the same about “insurance” and trades with minor perks like nonblocks and nonsteals, though I’d never seen it before these videos!
Agreed. My gaming group was playing with future trades back in 2000.
I was thinking 6w 3-1 as well and with pointing south long shot of getting on the wheat port too. Ofc you would have needed trades and dev deck help, but that was true regardless of which way you settled I just thought that had higher upside.
Why would you take the 8 wheat when you could take the 6 and 2 wheat spot? More wheat and access to the wheat port and the 3 :1 port? You can also snake down the road to the 5 sheep spot as well.

I am somewhere in the middle of the game and quite pissed with the RNG. At some point even 12 and 11 have outperformed 5 and 6. And the 4 is better than 5 and 6 combined.

hard decision on whether to place on the 8 wheat vs the 52. The utility of the ore port is great once you city. Whereas the wheat port isn't super useful. You got really unlucky with your devs not drawing knights to defend army. That's unfortunate. Well played though.
