In this video I paint the holy icon of Archangel Michael using a reference icon from the Byzantine Museum of Athens. I explain the process of painting the face and also talk on the expression of the face and the importance of it.

I had to laugh when you said "i don't know what I'm talking about"! I think i understood what you meant, about the uplifting nature of art. When we look at beautiful art, i think it draws our hearts closer to God/Spirit. Creating something beautiful that brings people closer to God in prayer is a wonderful thing.

The thing I love most about Byzantine angels is the hair. For some reason. I don't really know why. But their lovely curly hair is so beautiful.
Oh Hilary you are so right... And the hair also are so hard to paint in all their beauty.... I was thinking of you today because I just finished recording a Virgin Mary using as my reference an icon by Imone Martini... I was thinking you might find that interesting... :)

Θα θέλαμε και βίντεο στα ελληνικά . Είναι κρίμα μια ελληνικότητα τέχνη να διδάσκετε από λίγους και αυτοι οι λίγοι να το κάνουν στα αγγλικά
Ευχαριστώ πολύ για το σχόλιο. Η Ελληνική τέχνη είχε πάντα παγκόσμια επιρροή και για αυτό είναι μεγαλειώδης. Για μένα είναι σημαντικό να έχει πρόσβαση σε αυτές τις πληροφορίες κάποιος απο την άλλη άκρη του πλανήτη που δεν έχει άλλο τρόπο, ή πολύ λιγότερες πηγές από έναν Έλληνα μαθητευομενο, που και αγγλικά ξέρει και μπορεί να μαθήτευσει σε τόσες σχολές σήμερα. Πιθανό να ανεβάσω βίντεο και στα ελληνικά γιατί καταλαβαίνω το πνεύμα σας και θα ήθελα όλοι που το επιθυμούν να μπορούν να ωφεληθούν.

Pedro Mota, you can slow down the video using the playback settings. I'm not sure what device you're using, but if you click/tap on the video while it's playing, a little gear will appear. If you click on the gear, a drop down menu will appear and you can select the speed of the video playback. It took me awhile to figure it out, hope this helps.

@@katherinenoggle6407 yes, but it reduces the actual speed, not to the reality speed. This vídeo was created at high speed, you will never be able to see it at normal real life speed. But it is ok.

Πολύ όμορφο το βίντεο σας, μπράβο σας. Οι εικόνες που έφτιαξα πριν από 20 χρόνια περίπου έχουν αρχίσει να ξεφλουδίζουν, προφανώς έχει γίνει κάποιο λάθος στην προετοιμασία του ξύλου και την επιλογή υλικών που δεν ταίριαζαν μεταξύ τους. Εσείς ποια διαδικασία ακολουθείτε και ποια υλικά επιλέγετε ( κόλλα, βερνίκι, στόκο, κουνελόκολλα, κτλ ) ; Υπάρχουν λάθη, πράγματα που πρέπει να αποφύγουμε για να μην καταστραφούν οι εικόνες μας μετά από χρόνια; Θα είχαν μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον οι απαντήσεις σας
Το επόμενο βίντεο είναι σχετικό. Αν ακολουθούμε κάποιες δοκιμασμένες πρακτικές τότε δεν θα έχουμε πρόβλημα. Επίσης είναι σημαντικό οι εικόνες να μην είναι εκτεθειμένες σε υγρασία, ήλιο κλπ. Ευχαριστώ για την ωραία ερώτηση.

Αντώνη κσλησπέρα!! Ήθελα να σε ρωτήσω αν γίνεται κάποιο φωτισμα να είναι πιο κιτρινωπό πχ από το προηγούμενο φώτισμα σε περίπτωση που είναι πιο κοκκινωπό. Σε ευχαριστώ και πάλι για τη βοήθειά σου!
Νεκτάριε δεν θα χρησιμοποιουσα κίτρινο μέσα στα Φωτισματα του προσώπου. Αν ζωγράφιζα κάποιο Φωτισμα πιο κόκκινο από όσο θα θελα, θα καλυπτα το λάθος με ένα πιο ουδέτερο χρώμα. Παλιότερα χρησιμοποιούσα το κίτρινο στα Φωτισματα και τα αποτελέσματα δεν ήταν καλά. Αν θες να βάλεις, βάλε με φειδώ.

Γεια, κύριε Αντώνη ... Τι είδους πινέλα σχεδίασης χρησιμοποιείτε; Είναι η τιμή του λογική και φθηνή;
Χρησιμοποιώ DaVinci kolinsky j1500 σειρά, νούμερα 0, 1, κ 2. Πολύ καλά πινέλα και αν κ πιο ακριβά λίγο συμφέρουν γιατί κανείς σωστά τη δουλειά σου και κρατάνε περισσότερο αν τα προσεξεις.
Some iconographers coat their surface in one or two layers of pure egg, or egg with ochre added, underneath the image. Do you choose not to do this? Thank you for your response!
Thank you for commenting Arthur. I choose to do some underpainting before painting the face and a little less for clothes etc. I do not cover the whole surface with a wash of Ochre although it could be of some help to understand better shadows and highlights. I never felt the need to do it. I just find really important to underpaint the face as much as you can.

Thank you! In general with yellow Ochre, black a little yellow of cadmium and some white. But I have no recipes, I use my criterion
