- There have been many rumors floating around that the Lock Picking Lawyer and I are one and the same. Today its time to put those rumors to rest. I am most definitely indeed not the Lock Picking Lawyer. Nor is the Lock Picking Lawyer myself. If we were the lock picking lawyers the the space time continuum would be totally out of wack. And we wouldnt want that.
Today we will be testing out a $300 facial recognition lock, which has a very catastrophic design flaw.

LPL couldn't demonstrate this lock on his channel since he would have has to show us his face so well done sirs. Found the two left and right hands hysterical and realize the editing and filming of this was a Herculean effort.

That's just not true? I spent way too long figuring out the difference and it's always Jerry holding it when you see his face (narrower thumbnails, wedding ring)

What if you printed a large photo of your face and wrapped it around a mannequin head?
I'm just curious if that would be enough to meet the depth requirements and fool the system.
I assume they could solve that magnet issue with sufficient shielding or a redesign of the PCB, going solid state like you mentioned.
I work for a security company and we tested this on a similar product on an enterprise level access control system. We presented a printed face on a paper and nothing. We then cut holes on the paper face and wrapped it around someone else and boom the door unlocked.

Yes. Electromagnets are even easier to make stronger than permanent magnets.
Furthermore, the video is missing the most relevant thing. This product is extremely insecure due to the topology of the system, even if the magnet-defeatable relay was replaced with a solid-state switching component, because this can always be broken apart and hot-wired to bypass the entire unit.
To achieve any decent security, the outside-of-the-door unit which reads the face, key, code, or whatever person-identifying token, should never, ever directly control the power of the locking mechanism. There should be a separate unit for the mechanism power control, to be installed inside the locked premises, which either makes the decision of granting access while the outdoor-unit only reads the token (eg. face) and feeds the raw token data for it, or receives the access granting signal encryptedly if the decicion-making is carried out in the outdoor unit.
By such proper topology, the lock could not be defeated by hotwiring the locking mechanism power - without having already being broken into the locked premises.
