Even worse...they could steal your stuff, lock it back up with this..and remove the battery lol. So you end up spending all day trying to figure out how to get into your stuff before you realize its all missing.
A few years ago a guy with a flathead screw driver broke into my dad's truck just by jamming it into the driver's side key hole, which not only fucked up the door and the door handle barely worked, but went in and stole a laptop, a Samsung tablet, and a makeup bag. Apparently Ford was said to have fixed it in previous models but this was a 2014 Ford F350. If he had left his keys in the car like some people do with vehicles that have keypads, then that'd be gone in about 10 seconds. Stuff isn't as secure as it seems.
But the thing is that no one could guess before this video that the lock is openable but still your video was great as it would improve this product that's why we love your videos because it opens up everybody's eyes
I hope y'all are reading the description because the issue shouldn't be a problem anymore and the company shouldn't suffer this much from a defective unit.

Abbreviated Reviews Well I've got good news for you because we recently invented this new technology called a power bank but ignoring that, I do agree with you as I wouldn't want to rely on a battery for locks either.
briansmobile1 I'm just glad the thumbnail had a big red arrow pointing at the lock that was being held right up to the fucking camera otherwise I might not have seen it.
Any lock is penetrable. IT just really depends on how dedicated someone is to breaking into a lock. That being said, we must understand that this lock is merely bare minimum security AND convenience. Used for people who have lockers that are within building security and what not. These type of padlocks isn't something you'd lock your building gates with.
Something else problematic is the shackle mechanism. It looks like a long shim could easily pop this thing open in only a couple seconds. If you look at the internals of any truly high security lock you'll see ball bearings used to keep the shackle in place, thus preventing shimming. Spring loaded locking pawls have a terrible track record of popping open even when attacked with thick, sub-par shims.
Yo-yo that's ridiculous. I can get a directional Master Lock for 1/10 the Price that's 100 times more secure. This is nothing more han a $100 novelty piece
A elegant and much better solution (requiring a redesign) would be to make the back plate interface with the shackle, allowing it to only be unscrewed when unlocked, allowing for components to be serviced as needed.
Alex Caffrey pretty sure the manufacturers already know, they are the ones who designed the back to twist off after all. They were just hoping no one would bring it up. In fact I feel they use this exact method to replaces batteries if people return a lock with a defective battery.
I don't think so, because he just did the right thing, spending a$100 for a lock which can be unlocked within seconds with help of just a screwdriver (a commonly Avilable tool) then what is the deal of buying the lock, he just made people aware that this can be easily hacked. people can still buy it if they need this even after seeing this video
It's convince for the company to be able to easily replace the battery after it dies in one year. They already know the flaw. One person contacting them won't change anything... but, when they see videos like this viewed by hundred's, thousands or millions of people... That's when they will make the change if they still want their product/reputation desirable by the masses. There is power in numbers.
Good point...think about it....get the stuff and the lock...sell the lock on craiglist....after 2 days go and get it again together with the 'protected' content and so on....a never ending racket....ashamed of myself for thinking like that
Now that the flaw is exposed, it's very easy to replace the Phillips head screws with one-ways (Secure Torx isn't secure anymore since the bits are abundant), and fix the twist-off too. Should be a $5 fix tops.
You said it man, that guy have become so rich that when he review some shitty razor blade from China, it turn out to be an item send from god itself. Can't stand his greedy ass anymore and I have stop watching his video.
Not too many people sue over things like this unless it can physically hurt you. There's a lot of shitty things on the market that don't work like they're supposed to.
spafro101 The FTC has rules against this. It’s called product liability. You are right, not many sue over this, but the ones that do usually have a case and usually win.
spafro101 yeah you can pretty easily sue for loss of property if you had expensive stuff lost as a result of their defective product. Unlikely circumstances though, since anything with a value worth suing over should be in a safe box that doesn't rely on these types of locks or a safe deposit box at the bank.
Here's an easy hack, just buy it, unscrew the back panel and add some red loctite, then you need a torch to open it, and the simple bolt cutters are way faster
This guy is like unbox therapy but doesn't give a douchebag vibe or a "I'm better than you and definitely have more money than you" attitude and he also gets straight to the point and gives insightful reviews
Jakub Kołodziejski add a secret lock hole or compartment and if it dies only you have the key or if Your scared of lock picks make a magnetic lock key where the lock can read the magnetic field and unlock to that specific field
Boutta walk around with a screw driver in my bag and use my Pop Socket. If I see one of these I'll undo it, not take anything and put a sticky note on the lock that says "Hackd". If thise happens to you, you've been warned.
JJ J I mean if you do that you’re just as bad as a thief, all you will have done is made it easier for a thief who might not even have known how to do this
even if it did work, a battery powered padlock sounds like a pain in the ass. what happens when the battery runs out? the owner can't unlock it until it's recharged?
Wow. Your timing yould not have been better. I was looking into byuing one of these to secure the gate in my backyard without needing another key. I literaly had purchsaed it 5 minutes before watching this video. Never cancelled an order this quickly lol
Sure, but if you get a high quality lock (which is still at least 5 times cheaper than this) he'll need A LOT of force to break it, which means carrying some hard to conceal equipment. Quite a bit safer than something that can be opened with a simple screwdriver and little to no effort.
How to fix, Buy this lock. Take off the back. Use a small drill to strip the heads off the screws and voila, no one can screw it off. Or remove the screw and replace it with another type of screw that’s not Phillips head.
Public service announcement: If you do decide to go with a combo or key lock DON'T BUY MASTER LOCK!! I pick locks as a hobby and even when I was first starting out, I was able to pick their level 10 locks (their highest "security" level) in about 3 minutes with a metal tooth pick and a Bobby pin. Now that I've been picking locks for about a year I can open any one of they're locks in 15 seconds or less with a set of $10 picks from Amazon. It's seriously so easy that if anyone was watching me they'd assume I had a key. If you care about your stuff at all, do NOT "secure" it with a master lock. At very least go with American lock but abus and abloy are preferable. If your serious about security get a medeco.
Clairvoux I'm talking about the brand "American Lock." I believe they're actually made by Master lock but they use much higher quality metals for their hasps, ball bearing locking palls so they can't be shimmed, and most models use at very least spool security pins which makes picking much more difficult.
Personally I think any security company should rely on their own products or methods for their company buildings. If they don't trust themselves, neither can I.
The back cover should be removable to change the battery when it dies (assuming they'll sell you another), but the internals should be welded shut. It makes no security sense to be able to dismantle a lock like that.
Uttiya Dutta I think they're talking about when the battery literally dies. All batteries have a pre determined lifespan before you have to replace it.
It seems that the design was to (maybe) allow for the replacement of the lithium battery or even allow easy repair. Could be useful in a lock. If this is true, the easiest way would be to engineer the back panel to be locked when the shackle is down. I don't 100% recall which brand did this, but there was a keypad deadbolt that used a similar mechanism to prevent access to the batteries when it was locked. Regardless, this is a serious oversight.
these kinda locks are usually for school students with lockers, as I remember I was tired of having keys in my pocket and sometimes even losing them. Don't take any lock serious, there is always a way to break through any locks, but you are meant to use the right lock at the right place.
"Tapplock will send free replacements to anyone who is able to displace the back-cover without damaging it (isn't it the point of someone damaging the lock in order to get into it? LOL). AND future batches will also come with proprietary screws. (which require a propriety screwdriver, which you most likely could buy, like any other "propriety" screws, because how else could you repair it? /s) (they should have just straight up put welded bolts in it instead) Go check out their indiegogo, they didn't ship out for most of their backers and their is a ton of shady and negative stuff about the people behind it. Too many red flags that scream SCAM on this company and their product.
jerry: hey can i get of couple of smart locks to test them in a video? taplock: yeah sure jerry: *uploads video DO NOT BUY THIS!* taplock: wait what *This is not what actually happened, just sounds funny.*
What they should have done is make the back a twist cap as it is, but only allow you to access the internals by pressing a button behind the twist cap while simultaneously activating the finger print scanner. Instead they decided that ordinary non-tamper-proof screws would foil even the biggest fans of Rick and Morty.
Burnt Cinnamon Roll but then you can’t access the internals to unlock it or fix it if the battery is dead. That would also be costly to implement. What they should do is make the internals (besides the battery) impossible to access without very specific tools, like multiple kinds of screws or even some kind of seal, that would require a lot of prep and time to take apart, so that only the company or somebody with a lot of time and experience could open it. The problem is this lock is expensive, so they wanted to make it easy for the consumer to fix themselves in case of defect and/or easier for the company to repair, neglecting the security hazards. This product was kind of doomed from its conception. If the technology were cheaper and you didn’t have to worry as much about defects or damage ruining the product, these could have been made with a solid casing with no internal access. Instead they had to make it accessible, because otherwise they’d have refunds and angry customers. It still backfired on them though.
JerryRigEverything, you must be so hyped about the mi 8 ee because of it having a transparent clear glass back which means you won't have to make it yourself 😂😂😂 Edit: im joking guys I knew that it's fake, I mean come on it looks fake (cool but fake), and this is coming from a Chinese Xiaomi. Why would they tell the truth? They just want attention.
Like the transparent HTC U11, it's not transparent enough for Jerry's liking. Also, there's a bit of skepticism on whether you're seeing the real innards of the phone. .... Sounds like Zack will need to get one to investigate.
Wow, I think it’s only good for lockers where as the back of the lock would be impossible to being exposed but, having the lock on a gate, bike, or chain would allow the back of the lock to being visible and accessible.

i hope that lock has a good life in heaven and is very strong and populair
MrClean doesn’t just clean, but also doesn’t advise you to buy a 100$ lock.
Your voice is so nice that I even listened through the final 1 minute of the video which is an ad.
This guy is like unbox therapy but doesn't give a douchebag vibe or a "I'm better than you and definitely have more money than you" attitude and he also gets straight to the point and gives insightful reviews
OR this is actually and add for the product disguise as an unboxing video which are the worse so yea props to the guy
Exactly what im thinking.
I am obsessed on how calming ur voice is
Good work Agent 47
Jerry Rig Everything: tearing down phones, padlocks, and dreams
Can I return my order
Challenge the Wild no now buy the new $300 taplock
Just open it yourself and glue it "stuck", not the best but should help against that kind of twisting to open
and while your at it why not use those "anti-thief" screws? One screw-up and never let's go EVER again.
Locktite or JB Weld the cover on....it will be good until the LiPo battery (not LiIon) goes dead.
red7fifty so one year and your 100$ lock is garbage and you have to break it open.
Wait a minute, this isn't lock picking lawyer
That's... The dumbest lock design
No it's not, Masterlock has similar fingerprint lock but screws are on outside of the lock :D
@Jakub Kołodziejski break the lock
Jakub Kołodziejski add a secret lock hole or compartment and if it dies only you have the key or if Your scared of lock picks make a magnetic lock key where the lock can read the magnetic field and unlock to that specific field
Ikr
Jakub Kołodziejski you charge it
Boutta walk around with a screw driver in my bag and use my Pop Socket. If I see one of these I'll undo it, not take anything and put a sticky note on the lock that says "Hackd". If thise happens to you, you've been warned.
JJ J
HACKERMAN
Tanner Ronnebaum ?
Tanner Ronnebaum Lol wtf. Are you 12 or do you have the IQ of room temperature?
JJ J I mean if you do that you’re just as bad as a thief, all you will have done is made it easier for a thief who might not even have known how to do this
Lol "Hackd"
Jerry has an iconic voice
And eyes 💎💎
Except his name is Zach... XD
HeresFrank Betches did you kiss him?
even if it did work, a battery powered padlock sounds like a pain in the ass. what happens when the battery runs out? the owner can't unlock it until it's recharged?
Battery life is probably a long long long time, google the product
TheYoo2b it’s 1 year battery life for 2 hours of charge! Or 3,500 unlocks
Then you get the battery replaced by the company or buy a new one lol
you can just plop the back cover and buy a new battery or charge it there using a power bank and unlock it.
You can also unlock it from your phone
Wow. Your timing yould not have been better. I was looking into byuing one of these to secure the gate in my backyard without needing another key. I literaly had purchsaed it 5 minutes before watching this video. Never cancelled an order this quickly lol
Time to go chase some of these locks down :)
This guy right here officer
Eye Dupppz hey..
That's pretty guuud.
... to inform the owner of the problem so nobody can steal his stuff, right? :)
Just discovered your channel and I thank you for your “Smart” help in consumerism.
Who's back after watching the tapplock one plus
me
Matt The Miner me too
DAAAAAMN, HE JUST RUINED TAPLOCK'S BUSINESS.
Hitomtom yeah
I am glad that I watched this. I was thinking about getting some of these until I just watched this.
Well if you buy a normal lock a thief is still going to break it open with force just like he would do with this one
Sure, but if you get a high quality lock (which is still at least 5 times cheaper than this) he'll need A LOT of force to break it, which means carrying some hard to conceal equipment. Quite a bit safer than something that can be opened with a simple screwdriver and little to no effort.
Hi, I just wanna say that I love all your videos😍😍 Keep it up!!!!!
How to fix, Buy this lock. Take off the back. Use a small drill to strip the heads off the screws and voila, no one can screw it off. Or remove the screw and replace it with another type of screw that’s not Phillips head.
Or weld the back of it. But if there is a problem with the lock you need a grinder to open it.
Really man? Incan easily fix that. Hammer the phillips screw drive in the roughed up screw heads until they form like a Phillips screw. Simple
Or get a refund
abhishek nayak get the fuck out, it's UA-cam, u don't talk any sense here
Kool Kiddie just tape the back with duct tape. That shit fixes everything
You mentioned WindowsPhones. Thank you for not forgetting this few users.
Don Johnson what about master lock combination locks?
Will Phillips search UA-cam for "master lock combination shimming" to see hope vulnerable they are.
Thanks for your valuable input
Abloy is actually Spanish. I worked for them. What are you talking about?
Clairvoux I'm talking about the brand "American Lock." I believe they're actually made by Master lock but they use much higher quality metals for their hasps, ball bearing locking palls so they can't be shimmed, and most models use at very least spool security pins which makes picking much more difficult.
Ahhhhhhhgggg the sound of the razor scraping against the metal was like someone stabbing me in the ears
Taplock should use this on their company gate. Shut it down
They tried a new thing which I think many people wanted.
If they fixed this issue then good for them. If not, BURN THEM TO THE GROUND!
Personally I think any security company should rely on their own products or methods for their company buildings. If they don't trust themselves, neither can I.
To only have it reopened in 30 sec?
The back cover should be removable to change the battery when it dies (assuming they'll sell you another), but the internals should be welded shut. It makes no security sense to be able to dismantle a lock like that.
CatsMeowPaw you can charge it using the proprietary port. No need to remove the battery
Uttiya Dutta I think they're talking about when the battery literally dies. All batteries have a pre determined lifespan before you have to replace it.
That is when the guarantee runs out, so you have to buy a new one..
**ME UNLOCKED THE LOCK, STOLE THE STUFF, REMOVE THE BATTERY AND RELOCKED**
Good evening 47.
"THAT" is the smart lock.
GodBlessYou2008 that is very true he does look like agent 47
"Tapplock will send free replacements to anyone who is able to displace the back-cover without damaging it (isn't it the point of someone damaging the lock in order to get into it? LOL). AND future batches will also come with proprietary screws. (which require a propriety screwdriver, which you most likely could buy, like any other "propriety" screws, because how else could you repair it? /s) (they should have just straight up put welded bolts in it instead)
Go check out their indiegogo, they didn't ship out for most of their backers and their is a ton of shady and negative stuff about the people behind it.
Too many red flags that scream SCAM on this company and their product.
I think they mean without beating the lock senseless. In the video he unscrewed the back without damaging the lock itself.
So basically taplock just legally stole money from purchasers while putting their customers at risk 😂
jerry: hey can i get of couple of smart locks to test them in a video?
taplock: yeah sure
jerry: *uploads video DO NOT BUY THIS!*
taplock: wait what
*This is not what actually happened, just sounds funny.*
FLEX TAPE CAN FIX IT.
This dude sounds like How Its Made.
LMAO how can you build something like that. Was there no prototype that exposed that?
Jindujun no it’s part of the design so that they can perform maintenance
Huge respect from Nepal bro 🙏🙏🙏 thank u soo much 🤗🤗
JerryRigEverything, you must be so hyped about the mi 8 ee because of it having a transparent clear glass back which means you won't have to make it yourself 😂😂😂
Edit: im joking guys I knew that it's fake, I mean come on it looks fake (cool but fake), and this is coming from a Chinese Xiaomi. Why would they tell the truth? They just want attention.
Like the transparent HTC U11, it's not transparent enough for Jerry's liking. Also, there's a bit of skepticism on whether you're seeing the real innards of the phone.
.... Sounds like Zack will need to get one to investigate.
😂
But it doesn't show the actual components
Abhijith S wtf!! even the company says that is real then why r u dying?
Its actually a replica of whats inside... not the actual stuffs
Wow, I think it’s only good for lockers where as the back of the lock would be impossible to being exposed but, having the lock on a gate, bike, or chain would allow the back of the lock to being visible and accessible.
5:06 …. "Windows Phones".... lol
Yeah,Nokia used to make windows phones.
Most satisfying thing when I realise that your going to open 2nd lock as well
