  • Lethal drones with facial recognition, armed robots, autonomous fighter jets: we're at the dawn of a new age of AI-powered warfare, says technologist Alexandr Wang. He explores why data will be the secret weapon in this uncharted landscape and emphasizes the need to consider national security when developing new tech -- or potentially face all-out AI warfare.

    The thing is people do not wage wars, only leaders do and if someone is behind the timetable is us as humanity cuz we waste so much energy and resources to fight one with another insted on focusing on working together and push the human race forward.... it makes me sick that every discovery has to become a weapon insted a beautiful tool that helps us to evolve. That says a lot about human nature in general.

    This is not the talk I was expecting. This person is way too supportive of AI in warfare. We should be focused on deterrence and global regulations, not superior weaponry. I encourage anyone who agrees with his talk to learn about the Moloch problem as it relates to AI especially as explained by Max Tegmark. We don't need to be trapped in this. There's good reasons tech companies have stayed away from government contracts like this.

      Deterrence is achieved through superior weaponry or at least mutually assured destruction so I don’t see your point. Also, we have plenty of automation and smart systems in war already and having more decreases loss of human life because systems are more accurate when needed and we don’t have our men and women in precarious situations. I think there is a fundamental misunderstanding of AI and warfare in this comment.

    For several months now I think almost daily about what humanity can do to avoid massive emergencies brought on by AI at all levels of society (at best) or even dystopian outcomes that bring humanity to the edge of collapse (at worse). I've been moderatly encouraged that thoughtful leaders have recently. been stressing the importance of investing in AI Safety and alignment with human values.
    Seeing this talk from Wang (he's been making the appearance circuit lately but never so strident about war & conflict) - it reminds me there are and probably always will be very capable and connected people that will be incentivized to push AI to its limits regardless if that means taking humanity _over_ the edge of collapse. • @SmileTribeNetwork
      @SmileTribeNetwork Рік тому

      The trade off is that humanity becomes a resource for AI to utilize and harvest, requiring that humans input more data to better represent Humanities goals and ambitions.
      Weaponizing Data is a pathway towards global conflict, wars waged between fully autonomous armies, rendering physical warfare to be obsolete.
      We may soon see a time where humans are wholly uninvolved in warfare, no human casualties will occur, and the entire population of humanity will no longer care for war.
      The question, should we pass along warfare to our digital descendents or do what we can now to show that warfare is the last resort option in a world of other possible solutions.

      The best help is to first identify and understand root cause of problems.
      For this, I'd suggest watching some talks given by Peter Zeihan: a geopolitical analyst who simplifies very well the demographic and trade situations at the root of the massive problems we see boiling. For instance, he had been warning about Putin's war on Ukraine for years, based off the structure of the land, Russia's "security needs", and how a recent discovery of oil in Ukraine would pose a threat to Russia's corrupt economy, among other causes. And furthermore, he was explaining how all of the following events would (are now) impact wheat and iron exports to both western countries and Africa/Asia. All treaties and diplomatic strategies that have ever had any real effect have either been bilateral (SALT), military based (NATO), or economic based (EU, NAFTA). The UN will continue to be mostly useless unless you had a one-world army with real teeth to enforce regulations, which will never happen.
      I distrust AI as well, but to throw out pretend idealistic “solutions” which are structurally impossible is just silly. If you really were afraid of AI in military capabilities you’d have to join or make a movement in the US to ban such things, and then tied economic sanctions to it related to world trade. u think other countries (china, russia, etc) give a crap about all that? Peace and safety dont come from minding your own business in the world stage. Why do you think Russia is in Ukraine right now? Its because they saw weakness in the US and Europe, who reacted weakly when Russia invaded Crimea almost a decade ago.
      Why hasn't there been another 9/11 in the last 2 decades? It sure isn't because of increased security at airports and what not. It's because fear has been instilled into other countries by the US since 9/11. Ability to make others fear you is what brings safety and peace, else they'll eat you alive for being an idiot.

      @@AJ-jx5gm That's a rather Machiavellian take I can't accept in full. However, I concede that monopolization of force tends to be the way legal restrictions and standards are enforced in practice.
      I hold with Yudkowski's plan for an international moratorium on large-scale training runs of AI systems larger than GPT4, imposed by signatory nations on each other and even on non-signatory nations such that sanctioned military actions up to and including prewarned airstrikes on moratorium-violating data centers are imposed globally.
      The motivation for this is that if we develop AGI before we develop the technical solutions for ensuring the safety of AGI, there is a sizable chance that we will literally all die because of it. If that is not a cause for rational fear, I don't know what is.
