As a 16 year old guitarist who first heard Van Halen 1 in a friends basement in 1978, his death today marks the passing of the most influential guitar player in history. There were guitarists I liked more, but Eddie was a force of musical nature, like Mozart. You can’t know what it was like in 1978 unless you were there. The world was already full of hot shot guitar players as guitar solos were still popular and necessary in songs, if you can believe it. We were surrounded by solos. Out of an already elite atmosphere comes someone who reinvented the guitar, by borrowing, stealing and adding his own personality. This was no Berkeley grad snob with an ‘education’, but a natural innovator who could not even read music. We heard ‘eruption’ and could not even understand what we were hearing. Was it a guitar, a keyboard, voodoo magic? And this was right in the middle of disco!
All the hot shots who came after: Steve Vai, satriani, malmsteen, would not have existed without VH. They added speed and technique but none could match the sheer personality and songwriting chops of Eddie. I stress songwriting, and the ability to make a song memorable by the masses, not just guitar players. How many people (non guitarists) do you know that can tell you the title of one song from any of these other guitar players? VH not only wrote the most iconic hard rock riffs in history, his sense of melody and feel and tone were unmatched, and still are to this day. He is a once in a generation comet we will likely not see again.
Van Halen, the band, through sheer force of talent, drive, their outsized personalities, influenced every rock band in the 80’s, creating a copycat machine of terrible bands and players who tried to be VH, or David Lee Roth, and failed. This stink of hair bands and ever accelerating , million notes a minute guitar players could only be erased by the arrival of Nirvana and grunge in 1992. Suddenly, guitar solos were passé, and I was glad to see the clone wankers go the way of the dinosaur.
Today, most under 30’s don’t even know who Van Halen is or was. His music, his instrument, the guitar, and guitar solos, no longer fits in with what is cool. Real musicians with actual talent, the abilty to perform live, put on a show without backing tracks or silicone inflated buttocks, no longer matter in the “music” world. It’s now George Orwell’s 1984, with covid banning live music everywhere. You can read the book, but I’m going to listen to the last album by the original Van Halen.

      Loved everything, so right on.
However I'd have to disagree with the last paragraph. I'm under 30, and Van Halen (on this tour actually) was my very first concert. Seeing him play Eruption live as a young guitarist was so inspiring, and while it's easily one of my favorite concerts I've ever seen, there's still lots of amazing instrumentalists and music today. The joy he brought to playing music is as contagious ever, and it inspires me and others to this day. His playing always reminds me of how fun it is to play guitar, it's truly something special. RIP to a real Guitar Hero.

I agree. However time was on his side. Not much left to reinvent after him. Tom Morello. Jack White. Today's kids can be good in UA-cam vids. But is there really anything "new" left with guitar to try? Idk.

"Monsters of Rock" Tour, I believe? Eddie was drinking too much, back then, and didn't seem to be concerned at the time.. I believe he's been "sober" for awhile now! Really seems like he's happy! And the best player he's ever been!!! I hope and pray that he will be back, healthy again , and playing like "never before!". EXCELLENT!!!

He specifically says Bach and Kreutzer were his inspirations directly for his style of single string tapped arpeggios. Multiple times, he even said he learned keyboards as a kid because of Bach. Not to mention he *literally* put an excerpt of Etude #2 by Kreutzer in Eruption... Spanish fly is another Bach style piece of triads. He lost part of his tongue when the cancer was removed, and then he was deemed cancer free until it returned, in his throat... Years later. Eddie changed the guitar world. Nobody did that before him. Everyone wanted to play like him once they heard him. He used every part of the instrument. He used A lot of flange and phase pedal sounds , again nobody was doing that. His sound was so unique , different than all others. High end and layers of effects with a treble sound . back then everyone played Les Paul and Marshall amps. He built his guitar with parts from what he liked from other guitars. Literally built his own sound. His riffs are scales partly , harmonics, tapping, bending, whammy bar, pinch harmonics, all at speed and unpredictable. He one guy that doesn't resolve scales . Nobody else does that. He takes noise and makes it musical - one of a kind guitarist.

I worked at Crescent Oil in Montebello CA in the early 80's and the dispatcher was an old man that had one of his neighbors sons drive him to work. He lived in Pasadena and had a bad leg. One day just chatting with the kid that drove him to work and he casually mentions he lives in Pasadena and the Van Halens live in the house on the street behind his parents place. He said you could tell there was genius in Eddie's guitar playing in high school. He and other friends used to watch them practice in the garage. I feel honored to just have heard the story. One of many things that make living in So Ca amazing. The secretary lady lived in Downey, CA and she grew up with the Carpenters as neighbors. She personally knew Karen and Richard. You never know who or what you will run into.

Hendrix was an innovator and no doubt a brilliant guitarist. Eddie took it to another level and was technically far more advanced. Deciding who was "better" is subjective. Ultimately it is about the music and how it makes you feel. I love them both.

    • @davidmaglioli7048
      @davidmaglioli7048 3 роки тому +6

I’d argue, Eddie was superior only because Hendrix would devolve into mindless shredding mostly due to how inebriated he would be on stage. While Eddie keeps some sense of structure and melody throughout his performances. Both men are legends, but while Hendrix was indeed an innovator I don’t buy into the idea that he is the end all be all greatest there ever was. Guys like EVH, Malmsteen, Vai and so on have long since surpassed Hendrix. Though that may only be because Jimi didn’t live long enough to truly hone his talent. Comparing a 25 year old Hendrix to a 60 year old EVH is like comparing a driving school student to a F1 driver.

KentuckyWindage your right I'm 15 and started listening to Van Halen (especially 78-84 era) thanks to my uncle last year and I used to be forced to learn guitar three years ago(the instructor was boring and probably had no idea what tabs were and I didn't learn anything interesting now that I look back on it) then stopped because I wasn't interested. Then my uncle shows me this Edward van Halen guy and I was amazed. I became obsessed it made me want to pick up a guitar again. So I got my first electric guitar(a squire stratocaster for Christmas) ( it technically wasn't my first my first was a strat knockoff that my dad won in an auction that said cabo wabo on it, it sounded bad) and got a excellent new guitar instructor and progressed from there. A few weeks ago I got my first EVH Wolfgang, which is a standard in trans black with a Floyd rose, and started to take it seriously while falling in love with other guitar players along the way such as slash, joe perry, Kirk Hammett, etc. But Eddie remains my number 1 influence and encouraged me to pick up a guitar. Guitar has also given me more confidence and taught me important life lessons. One day I dream of starting a band that will bring back classic rock into the mainstream and if it wasn't for Eddie I wouldn't have found my passion in life.

Just want to add that this man has spent many, many, many hours and years developing his craft! He deserves all the accolades his fans give him. NO ONE plays like EVH. He LOVES what he does, and we love him for WHAT HE DOES. There will never ever be another with the unique talent He has. He has been one of THE most talented and innovative guitar masters EVER.. The many years of practice and drive to give us unique and beautiful and MONSTROUS heavy sounds gives him the right to be considered one of the greatest guitarists of his and our time and certainly that is said with the utmost respect and love for a man who loved the guitar. He probably spent more time with his guitars than he did with any woman he loved and that love rings out every time he performs. If you want to know what it takes to become great at your craft, look no farther than the example Eddie VanHalen set for every aspiring musician. He will be sorely missed and always remembered, and ALWAYS remembered by those who loved him, not only for his unselfish sharing of his craft but for whatever position he occupied in other's lives: son, brother, husband, Father, friend, acquaintance, teacher, musician. Yet, whatever he was, He was an innovator, a musical scientist we could consider him, an amazing man in his own right. RIP Eddie VanHalen. Thanks Eddie. You were and are Loved By so many, as you loved so many. You definitely left a mark on the world!

I'm glad the world got to get one last glimpse of Eddie, true to form. Playing at a level that justifies the legend.
It had been a long time. But finally, after 5-10 years of questionable playing, on this tour he went, "So this is what you've been wanting. Here it is."

I have commented on Eddies abilities before but you can really tell when plays, he is in another place than those of us who are just watching in awe of what this man could do while others have tried but failed to come even close to his playing.R.I.P.

Even though he's been sticking to his main licks... He was truly in top for on this tour!!! I've only seen him in 2012 and 2015. If he can't keep up with 1984 Eddie creatively anymore, he can definitely match 1984 Eddie note for note!!!

The innovation combined with melodic mastery. The amount of work he put in to discover new lengths to take the guitar, topped with overwhelming joy. He and his guitar are like two kids playing games and having the most fun. RIP Eddie. You showed us a new Rock and Roll world.

RIP EVH. To me and many others, you are immortal. Rock n roll is immortal as you are one of it's shining cornerstones. Your unique guitar mastery will play in the wind long after there is no one left to walk the earth. You are the true maestro of the past, present and all the days ahead until the end of time.

As someone who has never picked up a musical instrument in my life other than a recorder back in the 4th grade I have no idea how Eddie is making the sounds he does on his guitar but goddamn is it mesmerizing and fun to watch. RIP
