  • Although the 2004 Reunion Tour wasn't all too bright, there were a few moments that shined some like this one right here. A great father/son moment on stage.

When I became a father something fundamental changed in me. It didn't mean I became a better person but the first time I held my daughter I could feel something had changed deep inside. I don't think that happens to everybody but I can tell it's what happened to Eddie. The love he has for Wolf just shines and they are/were very lucky to have that bond. It's beautiful to see and takes me back. Tearing up now, gotta go.

A couple of ways to look at this performance now given that Eddie is gone. At that point, Ed was a train wreck on so many levels. 2004 was a really low point regarding his health and his ability to play the instrument. It was all a painful mess. The upside is that he was able to remarry, move on with his life, make a huge comeback, have a couple of successful tours, a great studio album, reconcile with Dave, produce a solid live cd and appear live on Kimmel. It really was a great comeback. So long, Eddie. Thanks for the memories and the music.

I remember the mess Eddie was in for this tour, it was hard to watch him in such shape. I was waiting to hear the bad news back then, but I believe his son saved his life. It’s heart wrenching to lose Eddie, especially for his family. But Eddie cleaned up for his son I believe. To get to witness the difference in Eddie up until 2015 was a blessing and I’m thankful that Wolfgang got to have what he did with his Dad. The incredible part is just how good Wolfgang really is. Imagine the pride Eddie must have felt. Good grief it’s hard to believe he’s really gone. My thoughts and prayers will continue to be with Wolf, Al, Eddies wife Janie, and Valerie. Thanks for changing rock guitar forever Eddie, you are forever the GOAT.

I totally agree with you. He is in a better place. He was corrupted as a very young child into drinking and smoking and that, by no means was his fault, but rather the fault of hideous parenting by his "parents." God shields children and the sick and Eddie was saddled with a lot of baggage from his youth and obvious anxietys and stresses and addictions. He's definitely up there, hand-picked to be in Gods best band and showing all the angels "how it's done." I firmly believe this!
And, kudos to his wife Janie. It sounds like she had no problem with Valerie and by letting them be at his side as he passed, that speaks volumes for the class of both wives, current and ex.

@@alisonb9963 Every action we choose, bad parenting or not. Just saying. Making excuses for a person doesn't show love. Addiction is a real disease but it still starts with a choice. People are people and bad choices don't always come from bad people. At the same time there are folks who have dealt with the worst things imaginable and still make consistent good choices. Why?
Because those around them showed them real love instead of doing the easy thing which is making excuses.

You can say whatever you want about eddie, good or bad. But two things are for sure, he loved that kid unconditionally and was one of the greatest to ever pick up a guitar.

I remember October 6, 2020 like it was yesterday. Having lost my mom at a young age, I sympathize with Wolfgang deeply. Eddie was my biggest guitar hero, and the single greatest influence on how I sound and play next to Angus and Malcolm Young. The day Eddie passed, I just felt my heart sink lower than ever before. I didn’t want to do anything for the remainder of the day, I just wanted to go home, pop on a Van Halen record and go to sleep in the vain hope that it was just a horrible horrible bad dream. Seeing Ed at arguably a very low point in his life at the time this video was shot resonates so much differently with me now than it did when I first saw it years ago. We see a man, a god among men, a talented musician who rewrote how the guitar was perceived, yet he is battling inner demons that have followed him for decades, and those demons are starting to take a toll on him. We see a broken man, but through the pain and despair, we see his unquenchable determination, and it walks out on stage playing the same song he struggles to play. A young Wolfgang Van Halen, Ed’s son, giving him hope and something to live for. I can’t help but tear up every time I watch this video. Eddie Van Halen, Rest In Peace, good sir

I know Eddie has had his battles with drugs and alcohol but it is still very touching to see him show love to his son on stage. The moment was not lost on him. He knew that was a memory that he and Wolfgang would remember for the rest of their lives. Very touching moment despite dad being pretty f'd up at the time. The emotions he was feeling for his son were real. I'm glad he seems to have turned his life around.

I hear Wolfie played this song at his wedding walking down the aisle with his mom. Also left an empty chair where Eddie would have been. I wish you and your bride a lifetime of happiness. Eddie would have been crying tears of joy to see his little boy continue his journey to becoming a family man

After almost thirteen years posting this, I feel that I should share a few words.
Pressure lays upon thus grace, crushing stability for yet today. Giveth pain amongst the masses…there might ever be any resolution.
And as we hear, see and wish upon our fallen, we only share the light to what was hidden by their darkness.
As so here we are, another year without a king, may we all wish him eternal peace. For where we might stand a century somehow, we can only let his legacy carry us from now.
    Rest In Peace, Edward.
Val, Wolfgang, if this video is too much, let me know, and I’ll promptly remove it.

A moment in time, when a great musician , forgets the world.. And becomes just a man, just a Father. And a Son, who's aware of the Father's inner struggles. But who's love and support for his Father, shine's brighter than any stage light.. You've grown to become a awesome young man Wolf, and we see in your eyes, that same brightness your Father held in his. May your day's be full of Blessings, may your Dad , be at internal Peace.

Been watching this on repeat for… way too long now. The lick he plays from 0:50-1:00 is so stunning, even if it’s just a simple variation on an already relatively simple tune. Hard to imagine that this was EVH at his lowest. Sure, he looks terrible and his technique is a bit sloppy, but it’s impossible to deny his feel. Behind all the pain in his eyes is an undeniable love for music. RIP.
