It always makes me so happy to hear that Hank loves Terry Pratchett, to whom I have devoted an entire bookshelf.
As an avid ebook reader, Terry Pratchett is one of the few writers of whom I - need - the physical copies. There is nothing more satisfying than a bookshelf full of Pratchett. Also, Josh Kirby's artwork on the older books portrays the writing style so perfectly.
Becky Kaplan I have a goal to collect all of the Discworld books, I have just few now but I love them!
+Ampphed I know. It turned my sister off them, but I love that art.
please start a book review channel . I'm desperately searching for people on UA-cam who review books that aren't mostly nor only YA.
+Easy Rawlins There's nothing wrong with YA (I haven't read much of it, but I see nothing wrong with it).
Oh my god hank has predicted the future
Pride+Predjudice+Zombies
I am just so excited that you guys have so many books on your bookshelves!
Read Kurt Vonnegut, i know it is not a review, it is just a really great piece of advice.... seriously, Kurt Vonnegut was an amazing author.
+Arian hmn YES!
Should I read Jailbird?
Lermith Biarreta Yes
Arian hmn he was
Yes! You should read everything Vonnegut wrote, because more than almost any other modern author not intentionally writing a series, Vonnegut’s work is very self-referential. I think the best way to view Vonnegut is not novel by novel or short story by short story, but to view his entire oeuvre at once. If I did have to review his books individually, “Jailbird” would be one of my favorites. His only real dud is the play “Happy Birthday, Wanda June,” which you can easily skip.
YES. Thank you World for Terry Pratchett.
I went through all of your videos recently and I'm quite a fan now.
This is one of the best types of sections you have done; I look forward to more book reviews from you guys. I'm always looking for some obscure and awesome literature.
I thoroughly enjoy all your book reviews.
This might be random, but I sometimes wonder what people who aren't authors would write if they were or had been while they were alive. Like what if people like H.R. Giger or Albert Einstein had been authors? What kind of stories would've been made?
You could argue that Albert Einstein was an author, he just didn't write fiction.
Truesight. Book where a whole village of people is blind where one kid begins to gain sight. Brilliant writing, fascinating way of describing colours from the perspective of one who has just gained sight, and just freaking amazing.
Sounds kinda like the giver
Your energy in this vid is infectious and very charming!
Was looking around utube, wondered if anyone did book reviews on here... and voila.. ur the first one I watched all the way through.. woo!
Awesome.
:o)
It's always right before my birthday that I find videos uploaded on my birthday! Anyway, I love short book reviews, especially when I need more books for my Amazon 'Wish List'
Moments after finishing Hyperion I return to this video to say THANK YOU! An excellent recommendation!
+Jamie Boccia I read through the first few sections of Hyperion, I couldn't finish it.
John, READ GOOD OMENS!!!! its neil gaiman and terry pratchett, and its beautiful
I so want to read that book. Though I am currently working my way through the discworld series. Read about 1/3 of the books now... thoroughly enjoying it! I'm sure Good Omens will be brilliant as well.
Thank you for existing, human being. There are surprisingly few people who like it.
Zachary Adkins Yes! It is amazing I loved it!
+That Ravenclaw in the TARDIS Really? How can anyone NOT like Good Omens? Apart from boring people. Am I right? :D
ahhh.... this was my first vlogbrother video. thank goodness I found it and loved it.
I'm so excited that you read/loved Les Mis! It's great that it's such a huge thing right now, what with the release of the movie, but I still get really excited when I find someone else who's read the book.
The Truth is not about Moist! It's about William de Worde!
+Elizabeth Dubin a.k.a. Wynkyn
++ what book is moist von lipvig? Loved the truth tho
YOU LIKE TERRY PRATCHETT TOO?! I love you even more now.
SavyCakes SAME! :D
AHH! Another video of awesome. Thanks for this. Great idea, and I can soon read the books which you love because I'm really really really bad at choosing my own from the library.
You are made of awesome!
Great book reviews, I liked that you were able to get this done in three minutes. Gives me some good ideas for reading. I will use these ideas.
Geek Love by Katherine Dunn is absolutely amazing! It's about this family of circus freaks and their crazy, sad lives. I cried during this one but it's still amazing. I would post more but I'm afraid of being flamed T_T
Note to self: hyperion
I bought myself the Bermudez Triangle for Easter. It was very lovely!
Thisisnottom is so much fun. It also feels very rewarding to get to the next section because I have to put so much thought into getting there.
I love the Kodocha in the background.
And I'm all for a book review, once twobooks I'm eagerly awaiting come out next week (The Last Olympian, and Dead and Gone- sooooo excited)
How does one go about having an indie book reviewed by you?
Hank, The Truth features William Deword. Not Moist Von Lipwig. I know this because.Going Postal features Moist Von Lipwig. He starts being a thing in that one. He also gets interviewed a lot by wait for it... Miss Crisplock. In Going Postal. Which was the first book he was in.So he couldn't have started the newspaper. Because he didn't exist
+minimooster Just about to comment the same thing; glad someone else noticed.
Now you have me going on the riddles. Fascinating.
Hey Hank,
John has taken us on a tour of his bookshelves before and it was really cool. Would love to see what's on your self sometime (besides what sneaks into shot behind you when you make videos). Thanks!
Also, when was Moist von Lipwig in The Truth?
uh, Moist Von Lipwig is not in The Truth...
Elinor RH. Welcome to my world. I am still confused as to why he said this.
What can I say but, You have incredible talent. I was in radio for over 12 years and your delivery is terrific. Great job!! And I believe that you actually have read the books because I do not think that you were reading a script. Very clever ....10 book reviews in 4 min. Applause!!
I should be studying for my last final or working on my resume, but I'm watching you guys instead. Your videos are so much less stressful than real life!
speak faster man gosh
-Why are you staring at me?
-Cause you look my dead sister from Abnegation.
Man.. This was the first ever vlogbrothers video I ever saw. I found by searching "book reviews". NERDFIGHTER!
I just finished reading a book and I was looking for more good books when I stumbled upon this video! Thank you!
TERRY PRATCHETT IS A LOVELY DEMON OF THE WRITTEN WORD
Thanks! I now have a new list of books to read!
You recommended The Ship Breaker, and I loved it. Going off to find some Terry Pratchett and Maureen Johnson. Don't let me down, Hank!
Working at a bookstore has turned me into some sort or crazy spineatron that can recognize book spines on shelves in grainy videos and select which one's i've read... btw magnanamous book collection hank!
I'm watching this exactly 10 years after the video was released!!!!
I see a copy of The World is Flat by Thomas L. Friedman on Hank's bookshelf. I was previously going to try to read it, but now I'm definitely going to.
That was one of the most thoughtful reviews I’ve read in awhile. I’d love to hear your thoughts on Robert Olen Butler’s new novel “A Small Hotel.” Keep up the great work, I just subscribed to your channel.
LOVE THE REVIEWS! You are one funny person.
i'm currently working my way through all the discworld novels. so far, it's making up the bulk of my 50 book challenge for the year.
this is an incredibly wonderful idea.
also, i had no idea thisisnottom was still going!@ crap! now i have to catch up!!
Good stuff brotha. I like your style.
At least three or four of these books are ones that I've been meaning to read for ages. All of them got favorable reviews. I'm glad my tastes have your approval, Hank.^^
So far it's completely worth it!
I'm a huge P&P fan and seeing how he is integrating the zombies is worth it even without the other subtle changes.
Review of Looking For Alaska. I used to think you were awesome John. Then I read your book at like 2 am... and was up SOBBING until like 5:30... Thanks for being so good that you made me cry and go to school with like an hour of sleep. Thanks a lot. (Please note the immense sarcasm. I love John Green!)
I just finished "The Book Thief" that John suggested in one of his videos. It was so unique and his recommendation did not disappoint!
I love the energy and would love for you to review a novel that I've written. its a sci fi fantasy called the Sun Guardian and I think its right up your alley. keep up the fun reviews and let me know!
I can't wait for his new book either!!!
Hank could you please explain what has been happening with thisisnottom. I just looked at the site for the first time today, and I can't catch up.
When you said that your camera battery was running out, I watched anxiously for a whole minute, for some reason thinking that the video could be cut off at any moment. *headdesk*
It is 4:54 p.m. on January 21st, 2024. This is the Watching History of Vlogbrothers. Here my general thoughts so far:
I will definitely check some of these books out! Thanks Hank!
I COME FROM THE FUTURE TO TELL YOU THAT HANK GREEN'S BOOK "AN ABSOLUTELY REMARKABLE THING" IS BRILLIANT.
I finished my first Terry Pratchett today, ''Mort'', from the Discworld! I am a little reborn now, you understand! I love love love Death As A Characther in general, but oooh my how Pratchett writes him, it's EPIC!
I honestly loved Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials.
It's one of those series that every single time you read them, something else jumps out at you, or you can see it from a new perspective.
On the topic of Victor Hugo
I read the hunchback of Notre Dame in french. It was so good (and different from the disney version) that it almost made me forget that I was pretty much reading the french dictionary at the same time as the book. ( OLD FRECH IS SO FREAKING HARD TO UNDERSTAND SOMETIMES! D:)
Holy crap, this whole thisisnottom thing is freaking hard. I'm going to be wasting my whole life on solving these things now.
OMG!!! John is doing isthistom???!!!!!
This was in my recommended. Baby Hank. 😭
ikr! i read it over winter break and it was FANTASTIC. loveditloveditlovedit
I was wondering about that! I didn't THINK I had missed a Lipwig story!
OMG, I forgot how much I loved Sorcery and Cecilia. I'm glad you enjoy it as well :D
I started reading Interworld a few days ago! I haven't had time to continue reading it, but I'm gonna be flying all day tomorrow so hopefully I will have some more time to read it.
Hank PLEASE read divergent and the mortal instruments! those book series are amazing!
It is Bermudez and it can be found in any YA section at almost any bookstore.
That's probably my favorite book I've read in years... I've recommended it to everyone I know.
It's also on my list of "books that have made me cry in coffee shops" (which is growing longer all the time).
i want more!!
I've read some of them!! Like the first four but I haven't gotten around to buying the others yet. They are really good.
yeah, dude i never see HANK anymore except for his songs lol. john is everywhere!
i like your book reviews, sir
i noticed "The World Is Flat" of your shelf. Very good narrative, maybe the updates could cost less that buying the whole book again.
Oh my gosh I love that you've read Ringworld! My first name is Teela, and my dad named me after Teela Brown. I don't like the sequels as much, but Ringworld itself is one of my favorites!
Accio Deathly Hallows!
I love the way Hank says details
This Dark Endeavour (Kenneth Oppel). I don't usually read things like this, but this one was amazingly good and i actually really liked the main character. It was written as a prequel to Frankenstein and actually made me cry at one point near the end.
Also, Across the Universe (Beth Revis). I just love space right now, and also, I am a personal believer that if you're going to name a girl Amy, she has to have red hair otherwise it doesn't work.
I know nothing about Hyperion but I'll read it for that cover alone
interworld.... my favorite sci-fi book from so long ago... realizing how long you've been a nerdfighter
(on tuesday) HAPPY BIRTHDAY HANK hope its awsome and you get a power cord for your camera :) happy b day
I was looking up Novels to read for a book review and I saw VlogBrothers on the recommended and I just clicked and said: Yeah, I totally trust the Vlog Brothers with my grade :D
Zoo by Tara Elizabeth is an amazing YA book about a human zoo where people in the future use time traveling to save people who are about to die in the past and bring them to the future as a historical zoo. This is easily one of my favorite books
Anything by Melina Marchetta. I swear to God, she's one of my favorite writers and epic and Australian and GAAH. She's written two fantasy books that are part of a trilogy as well as several fiction novel thingies.
that tetris game to the right of the video is really enticing...
'A cross between Harry Potter and Pride and Prejudice'
Perfect description. Man I love that book, really want the sequel!
Oh my God, YES to Terry Pratchett. The Discworld is made entirely of awesome.
Hyperion made me really cynical but it was really interesting :D.
You should really do more book recommendations, I read Going Postal because of the Book Club ( i haven't followed in a while is it still going on?) and I freaking loved it.
I've always liked you Hank Green. You loving Le Guin kind of bumps it up a notch though. You are teh awesome.
i have no idea how to solve the riddles,
they make my head explode.
THISISNOTTOM ...is love
I just read Bermudez Triangle, too! It was quite wonderful. Now I'm reading Suite Scarlett.
I am reading Hyperion right now. It is fantastic. Bravo Dan Simmons!
Having watched a lot of Hanks Videos with the book case behind him I believe that the yellow
manga behind him is the Kodocha (Kodomo no Omocha) series.
Hey! You read the Kodocha series! Good stuff.
Random short book review? Ok! So, there's this book series called The Mysterious Benedict Society. And no matter when I read it the series still manages to stay relevant to the times. It always comments on the now even though it was written like ten years ago. I dunno how, but I love it!
woot a hank Tuesday!
I completely agree! I have all her books for that series...I love her writitngs.
ive been staring at your shelf, and im trying to figure out what manga you have. the yellow bounded ones look like kodocha (which if it is, good choice) and i don't know about the other one
Beowolf and collapse go side by side on your shelves? Is there any organization to your book shelves?
@bybykitty14 yes he's married. His wife's name is Katherine she appears in the videos sometimes, mostly singing.
Oh Hank. I couldn't agree more about Terry Pratchett. He is truly brilliant. I finally read Making Money last month and loved it too bits. *sigh. I like good writing.
I hope that some day there will be a way of reading John's book outside of TINT. I'm sorry to say, but I'm not the smartest cookie in the jar and solving riddles makes my brain ache!
Thanks Hank -Debbie
I had to mute the Les Mis part because I am currently trying to read it. It's just so long! But awesome.
More reviews please! (Suggestion: The World According to Garp)
The Truth was my favourite book in high school. My first Terry Pratchet book too.
