"If you like the Harry Potter books - you should just reread them again" MY LIFE IN A SENTENCE
You're not alone.😂
Dear John,
Since An Imperial Affliction doesn't actually exist, YOU SHOULD WRITE IT.
Sincerely, Everyone who's read The Fault In Our Stars.
Yes. Yes. And a million times, yes!
haha, at first I didn't realise that it wasn't a real book, I actually went to a local bookstore and asked if they had any copies and they said no, so I was disappointed.
+
Oh God, yes.
The title is based on this book: www.amazon.com/Emperor-All-Maladies-Biography-Cancer/dp/1439170916
The Emperor of All Maladies
I believe he mentioned this in an episode of Dear Hank & John but I'm not certain.
You should read the Fault in Our Stars. It's sooooo good.
i don't think john would be interested in that
Hector Pajamas I'm quite sure he wouldn't enjoy reading that
Hector Pajamas I think it isn't his style, you know?
i think he'd prefer paper towns
oh no wait hang on thats not really his type either
You do not want an ending to Divergent btw
I know, it was terrible, at least it felt complete.
still too painful to talk about
everyone dies
Jodie Garibay Nope...
Jodie Garibay Its worse than that...
Well you got your ending to the Divergent series, John. Are you happy?! ARE YOU HAPPY NOW?!
Why does she die thats so much bullshit
+Ethyn Stlys that is BS!!!
WOW SPOILER ALERT
I loved the ending to the Divergent series! It was very tragic and unexpected.
No, actually it wasn't. Your negativity on the other hand, is annoying, predictable, and stereotypical of spoiled fanbabies.
Pausing this video every 5 seconds to add books to my TBR on goodreads
lol I did the exact same thing
+cat whiskers You're one of those readers who frustrate me. I get all excited whenever someone adds my MONSTROUS to their list, but then I look closer and find that mine is only one of thousands that they'll never have time to get to before they die.
lol... same here
He should do another book recommendations video!!
You might try checking out John's video, 18 Great Books You Probably Haven't Read, if you haven't already.
*****
Thanks, I haven't! You da real MVP! :)
Btw i think you forgot to mention the perks of being a wallflower by stephen chbosky
It's My fav novel of all Time and he dient mention it :|
Yes yes yes!!!
you should read the catcher in the rye
THE BOOK THIEF OH MY GOODNESS THAT BOOK
Name of the wind by Patrick Rothfuss is simply AMAZING
I absolutely agree. If you are a Harry Potter or Tolkien fan, you'll love the Kingkiller Chronicles.
You got your ending, John. You got your ending.
Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan or The Mortal Instruments/Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare
The Book Thief is just... no words... It's...
Well it's narrated by death, almost everyone dies, it's 580 pages long, you'll love it... I am actually re-reading it right now for the something-hundredth time...
I know. I love it and own it and watched the movie. It was so sad
I also think the audiobook is worth the money, just because they got the perfect voice for it and listening to it feels like death is talking to you, but not in a creepy way. It's more like if you your friend was telling you a story over coffee and that friend just happens to be Death.
Emma Jelinkova I love that book. I actually watched the movie first, though. My mom knows that I love to read, so she saw the movie on Redbox and gave it to me. It was amazing. So amazing that I looked it up and discovered the book. So, I asked my mom for the book and downloaded the movie on my kindle. I'm re-reading it too. It was cool because on my first day of seventh grade, my English teacher told us that it was one of his favorite books too. P.S. You should have said spoiler alert for people who haven't read it yet.
Emma Jelinkova I love that series!! I think it was my first book series I read. It was amazing!
Emma Jelinkova oh wow I just realized I replied on the wrong comment lol
If you want to read a novel where you care a lot about the characters you should read The Book Thief? No, if you BREATHE, you should read The Book Thief.
I can tell that you, John, are so enthusiastic about books (which I greatly appreciate) because of the way you awkwardly twist your arms together and clasp your hands while smiling towards the end of this video. I love it!
You really have to read The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, the characters and the settings are just amazing.
Anyone else get super excited when he recommends a book you've already read? "My favourite author and I have similar tastes, I can die happy now."
I think we all regret reading the ending of divergent D':
I just came back here to find the next book I'll read because I just finished Allegiant, and I have to say I can't agree with you.
Yes, I was devastated by the ending - No Spoilers! -, but I still think it was AN EXTREMELY GOOD ONE. No, it wasn't fairytale-like but isn't that one of the most enjoyable things about the saga? How the character's responses were always so believable it was impossible not to relate to them despite the (arguably not so distant) foreignness of their reality? This is just my opinion, and (since none of my friends have read it yet) I don't have anyone else to share it with, so don't take it personally when I say; people just have to learn to recognize a good ending when they see one.
María Belén Turnes I agree. It was a great ending, even though it was devastating. It's new, not like most of the endings of books I've read. I may have been the best one I've come across. And people should indeed learn to recognize a good ending when they read it.
I agree with both of you. I both hated and loved the ending to the novel and I think veronica roth had a lot of guts writing the ending that she did. To me, the fact that Roth is able to make those kinds of endings to characters that she created herself is amazing and can not be easy. It is what separates good books from bad ones for me and as infuriating as the ending was, I wouldn't change it.
Actually, I agree it was a great ending! I just meant it as in it was so so sad! I think it was wonderfully done and to be honest any other kind of ending might have disappointed me, i couldn't believe when loads of people hated it!
Elin Miles In all honesty Im just annoyed she broke up my otp haha
"If you liked the Harry Potter series you should just read them again." Hahahaha already done many many times and they are still amazing!
Your mom gave you "Where The Red Fern Grows"?! when you were 10?! As a present?! Did she want to emotionally scar you?!
everytime i read that i CRY the end tho like i can't i just can't lol
My teacher read it to us in third grade. I barely remember anything, except, you know, everything you expect from 8-9 year old literature. Like death, sorrow, and soul crushing guilt.
My 2nd or 3rd grade class read that book, I was less aware of how sad it really was at the time
My 3rd grade teacher gave it to me and I think that is one if the few books I cried during
I'm 11 and my dad got me to read The Da Vinci code.....and John's books. So I'm hella scarred haha
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon
I loved that book
You should read Elinor and Park
mochalex that book was awesome. But it made me think funny for days... just like when I watched rain man
Chloe Proffitt Great one. Really sad, and I would like to know those three freaking words, but great.
Melissa Fallis yeah WHAT ARE THE THREE WORDS ToT
If you haven't you should so read the heroes of Olympus series by Rick riordan, that is probably spelt wrong, it would also be beneficial to read Percy Jackson first though, to understand a whole bunch of stuff and references. I am such a fangirl for those series. :)
oh my god those books are insanely epic and wonderful! I can't wait for blood of Olympus to come out
ikr, been waiting for the majority of the time now, but omg did you here, Rick tweeted that not all the 7 are going to survive, not Leo or Frank or Percabeth, jusst aaaaahhhh noooo.
Yess!!! I am counting the days til Blood of Olympus!!!! They are incredible & uncle Rick is awesome!
but its gona be the last one, as much as I want it to come quicker, that just means the faster it will be over, I just cant deel with that, omg the feels.
I know!! It's agonizing!!
I had to pause and praise you there for a second. I read every Sherlock Holmes book LOOOONG before watching BBC Sherlock, and YES I love the show but I cannot STAND it when people say they love Sherlock but go on to say they've never read the books. So THANK YOU John!
Okay, so for people who enjoy prodigies, excellent characters, complex worlds, beautiful writing, excellent stories, breathtaking romance and drama, or anything else that goes into good books: I recommend The Name of the Wind, especially if you liked LotR. Charlie Bone is also excellent for younger readers, and worth some time for the older ones if you like wizard school. Marcus Zusack or whatever it is that wrote Book Thief? Skip it and pick up his Underdog. Then I recommend Dune. Tarzan novels by Burroughs are well written and hilarious. Douglas Adams' The Hitchhikers Trilogy. All 5 (yes 5) books left me rolling on the floor in hysterics. That should get you started.
"The Book Thief" was probably one of the best books I've read in my entire life. It's soo good!
The Emperor of All Maladies in your pants.
Also I wonder how he felt about the Divergent ending........
+Valerie Foster - Emperor Mollusk versus The Sinister Brain
by A. Lee Martinez
I just finished reading your book, A Fault in our Stars, i finished it about 15 minutes ago, and I can honestly say, this book has changed my outlook on life, reading it, it made me stop and think, and FEEL, which I believe every good book should do, and I would like to say thank you. Thank you for writing something so beautiful, thank you for publishing this wonderful book, and thank you for writing something so inspiring, that it makes me want to be a better person.
Btw, Where the Red Fern Grows is now my second
Love these posts & updating my latest wish list!
Not familiar with the popularity of these picks and bookworms are few in my circles to share these worthy reads with.
I can offer that in one way or another, each will have a character that stays with you long after you put down the book or leaves an concept or feeling that you will keep coming back to.
The Story of Edgar Sawtelle- David Wroblewski.
The Elegance of a Hedgehog- Muriel Barbery.
A Still Life with a Woodpecker- Tom Robbins.
Johnstown Flood- David McCullough.
The Magic Club- Harry Brown.
Summer of Night- Dan Simmons.
A Prayer for Owen Meany- John Irving.
Stiff- Mary Roach.
Need I not mention anything by John Steinbeck or Gabriel Garcia Marquis?
You mention The Book Thief quite a bit, so I recommend I Am The Messenger by Makus Zusak
Sometimes, I feel like I'm the only one who (No offense) really did not like Divergent...
Thank you!
simplykhairah NOT ALONE!
I thought it was okay, but Tris was such a bloody irritating character... I was relieved of the end of the 3rd book ..
Misha Kroon I genuinely hated the third book. Not necessarily because the way it was written was bad, just the story line drove me absolutely insane.
It's a pretty good story, the dialogue even is pretty well written but the narration is kin of simplistic and there were some creative decisions on the part of the author that I wouldn't have made. If you can get past that it's actually a pretty good book, but I understand if you can't, it took me two attempts to get through it.
Im going to remember this when the holiday season comes around.
As a history fan here are some of my recommendations for history books:
Neil MagGregor's "a history of the world in 100 objects" and his "Germany: memories of a nation". He is the director of the British museum, he offers an engaging and different take on understanding the past.
Michael Burleigh's "The Third Reich: a new history" really the only book you ever need on Nazi Germany.
C. Scott Dixon's "Contesting the reformation" absolutely amazing book, more dense and more intricate but if you commit it's so worth it.
Michael Klarman's "from Jim Crow to civil rights"
The very short introduction to history is also great.
And since I'm a history student, if I'm ever published, please read my stuff.
I agree, The Book Thief is amazing! It makes you analyze everything! I recommend it.
Anything by Murakami!!! Though my personal start with him as an author was with his book After Dark, He also has a TON of short stories if you're looking to sample his work.
I recommend Hold Still. It's a really amazing book that is a bit sad but still worth it. It's about how a girl struggles to cope with the suicide of her best friend, a best friend that left no note, no explanation. She finds her best friends diary. This girl finally discovers herself, and as you wrote in one of your books grief doesn't change you, it reveals you. It's a really amazing story that covers loss, pain, and hope. You should read it. :)
I NEVER KNEW WHY I BOUGHT WHISKEY ROBBER, I AM SO OBSESSED WITH THAT BOOK, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
I think you should read and I'd love to know your thoughts on: Brandon Sanderson "Mistborn" series, Scott Lynch: " Lies of Lock Lamora" and Patrick Ruthfuss: "Name of the wind"!!!
They finished the Divergent series and are making a movie.
IM SO EXCITED FOR IT
I CANT WAIT!!!!!!!!!
Marcia Hunt oh no! girl thats was fine! It feels great when someone finally makes a fandom pun or joke. And i am excited FOUR it ;D
I'm just casually binge watching vlogbrother videos, when I suddenly hear the name Whiskey Robber.... as a Hungarian growing up in the 90's it brought up so many childhood memories. Thanks for the nostalgia, he is kind of our national hero :D
"Markus Zusak has fantastic muscles." OMG I JUST DIED AND SPIT IS ON MY KEYBOARD NOW FROM THAT SUDDEN BURST OF LAUGHTER.
Another great recommendation: The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
Agree 100%!
Please PLEASE read Stargirl! (and love stargirl)
So happy to see props for 'To Say Nothing of the Dog.' It got me through some very rough months during my fieldwork - I must have read it a half-dozen times in 1999 alone.
I don't know if John still reads these comments but this is really for anyone who likes books about time travel. Stephen King wrote 11/22/63 and I am obsessed with it! There is even a miniseries coming out in February 2016 on hulu based on the book and it is directed by JJ Abrams and Stephen King so you KNOW it's going to be good!
By far my favorite King book and to explain how good it is is just futile.
You should read When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead
It's upsetting that for dystopia books you didn't mention The Giver
That book was amazing!
The Giver is utopian, I think
If you like dystopian, read the Slated trilogy! It's by Teri Terry, and it's pretty new, and I haven't heard of anyone who have read it besides me. It's amazing!
@@gloria5795. Ummmmm, it’s a utopia only if you support the society that rids people of all but the mundane, that rids them of all that is beautiful, and a society that kills the innocent.
wally lamb she's come undone. one of my favorite males to write as a woman and DO IT SO WELL
Yes this video is from 2012 but I hAVE NEVER SEEN ANY ONE TALK ABOUT "TO SAY NOTHING OF THE DOG" BEFORE AND ITS SO AMAZING THANK YOU FOR INCLUDING IT.
I am sad at the lack of "In Your Pants" jokes.
Well, I recommend "Kira-Kira" and the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series to everyone.
YES YES YES!!!! He finally mentioned 'The Magicians'. It is really worth the read. I love it!!!
I just finished Augusten Bourroughs's novel Running With Scissors. It's a memoir about his crazy childhood and how he grew up. Throughout the read you feel so many different emotions: happy, sad, warm-and-fuzzy, angry, etc. You laugh and you cry, and it's an incredible book. I'm now reading one of his others, Possible Side Effects.
You should try the Maze Runner series they're really good
Hi
Hi
Hi
MAZE RUNNERRRRRRRR YEH YEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WOOHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Joyce Mo hi joyce
When you reach me by Rebecca stead
Hey
Hi
For lovers of fairy tales, I highly recommend The Land of Stories series by Chris Colfer. Also, John, your reaction to The Book Thief is the same as mine. One of my favorite books of all time and my top favorite book I had to read in high school.
Do. This. Every. Year!!!!!! We need more book recommendations from John!
I spot City of Bones 😏😏😏
I feel like you are my male version
I feel the same way!!!
I recommend to you The hitch hikers guide to the galaxy, Northern lights by Phillip Pullman, Anansi boys by Neil Gaiman, Spud by John Van de Ruit, I am number 4 by Pittacus Lore, The giver, Fractured by Teri Terry, And then there were none by Agatha Christie
So I'm 10 years late but WE HAVE THE SAME COPY OF WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS!!! You held it up and I was like "wait, what??" Super cool!
My friend didn't actually know Sherlock Holmes was a book character and thought he was an original character when she watched Sherlock
WOW, that's sad.
Oh, God. I'm sorry.
Is she really your friend, though?
Yes one of my best friends in fact :)
I think we will be very busy this summer christopher dadi
Yup xD
If you're in a changing place in your life - for me it was the last semester of college - I highly recommend This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald! A lot of Amory's ideas of the world resonated with me in the ways that he's becoming disillusioned and experiencing waves of wonder and apathy, BUT concludes that life is wonderful and worth chasing. It's a great refuge when life gets thrown up in the air and you're not sure how to feel about things. Although, obviously, all Fitzgerald is good Fitzgerald, so you already know the prose is stunning and the language captivating!
-The Razorland Saga by Ann Aguirre (Day boy and Night girl)
-Firegirl by Tony Abbott (short read)
-The Confessions of Catherine de Mediciby C.W. Gorner (worth re-reading)
-The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani (witch in disguise)
-Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout (intergalactic war in 4th and 5th book)
-Ash by Malinda Lo (Cinderella's are always named after the remnants of wood and fire)
-The Lunar chronicles by Marissa Meyer (Si-fi fairy-tales)
-Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers (You will no regret it)
-Don't even Think About it by Sarah Mlynowski (very entertaining)
-Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card (epic awesomeness is what it is)
-The Truth About Alice by Jennifer Mathieu (high school drama gone too far)
Please do one of these for 2013!
John, have you read the Abhorsen series (Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen) by Garth Nix? One of my favorite YA series, plus he has a new book coming out in September (Clariel)! PS your hair looks particularly....odd in this video. Methinks you got a haircut.
I loved Keys to the Kingdom it was an amazing series
Rangers apprentice by John Flanagan is brilliant! a heartfelt relationship between mentor and apprentice with a side of action, love and friendship and just a smidge of cool facts about medieval architecture and mechanics
i love where the red fern grows, it is one of my absolute favorites.
THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS SERIES!!! :)
Ever read unfortunate events? One of the best there's out there
Made me so happy when he held up the copy of Where the Red Fern Grows, because I have the exact same paperback copy that I've owned for 10+ years. :)
Awh, Where the red fern grows... The first book that made me cry, little did I know it would not be the last.. not by a long shot.
You should read Wonder by R.J Palacio
READ: HOWLS MOVING CASTLE
THAT BOOK WAS MY CHILDHOOD (sort of...) :)
YES!!!! That book is the best! Also any other books by Dianna Wynne Jones are just as phenomenal.
Everytime I watch a John video, the TFIOS trailer comes on. This is awesome.
The False Prince, try that.
Read 12 Years A Slave, Tess of Dubervilles and The Witch and Other Stories by Anton Chekhov.
The Book Thief is probably one of the most amazing books ever written. Marcus Zusak, thank you.
He mentioned the whovians and sherlock fans! Just when I thought that John Green just couldn't get more awesome, he proves me wrong once more.
You should read Thirteen Reasons Why. I can't find the words to describe it that do it justice but it's an incredible book about growing up and depression and the consequence of your actions. You'd like it. Hannah kind of reminds me of Alaska is a few ways
no one should read this book
Nope, I just think it's a really bad book
Thirteen Reasons Why is one of my favorite books. It really makes you think about how what you do can hurt someone. It was a really inspiring book that I love and that sadly I have no one to talk about it with. I honestly love/hate books that really make me think and that make me cry and that make me just have to be in my mind for a while. It just made me think about everything and what could've been. I agree with you person, whoever you are, in saying that Thirteen Reasons Why is an excellent choice in books to read.
Warning: it will kill you inside and bring on a horrible case of over thinking life and everything in general.
I know not many of my friends have read and if they did they missed the point. I'm really glad someone else liked it.
It takes a lot of contemplation and reflection to fully understand the complexity of Th1rteen R3asons Why. Not everyone can see the world in the way necessary to appreciate that book. It is my favorite (fictional) book in terms of how much I cried while reading it. It is only surpassed in that category by TSWGO, for obvious reasons. I recommend both of these books with caution.
MAKE MORE OF THESE VIDEO PLEASEEE
Late to the game, but I can't be the only one re-watching old Vlogbrothers videos (right?). I love giving books and whenever I give someone a book, especially if it's the 'perfect fit' kind of book, I try to write something at the inside of the cover (sacrilege to some, no doubt). Usually it's just the occasion (birthday, christmas, whatever), date and name, but if inspiration strikes me, as it so rarely does, maybe something a bit more substantial.
My parents used to do that with old children's books when I was a kid, and it's so nice to find them and read the little notes. I try to do that now, when I give books to my friends and family.
The Illusion of Seperateness
It blew my mind
i agree about the Book Thief
Me too!
Unwind by Shusterman
Oh my god yes! So good
I read some fanfiction for that book, and the fanfiction was so good, I can' even imagine what the book is like. If you want to know what it's about:
www.youngwriterssociety.com/work.php?id=112558#c475397
So true about Sherlock. I always wanted to read it and a friend gave me a copy. It's sad how many people who love the Sherlock franchise haven't read the stories. It is a very enjoyable read.
On John's comment about The Book Thief, true that!!! Rudy, Liesel, Max, and everyone...you just cannot forget about them. CAN NOT.
The Divergent trilogy has ended.... mostly.... I honestly don't care to read any more of that series though, maybe not for a few years... ;-;
omg! I love the tfios sooooooo much it inspired me, but i'm still a divergent fangirl x
I'm there for you, I have divergent-loving dessease aswell
yup, my friends think I'm mental but I'm just ultra + fangirling bout divergent Joy Plays Mc
Sorry, I just have to.. you pretty much said 'the the fault in our stars"
Hold Me Closer, Necromancer is a hilarious, awesome take on the supernatural genre, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is just absolutely brilliant.
I got "Where the Red Fern Grows" for my 10th birthday, too! Of course, I was also reading "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe" at the time, and "Clan of the Cave Bear" by Jean Auel (Which is the series that I MOST recommend to you, John, although I'm sure you've read them) so the gift made sense.
If you like THG read the gone series (so perf)
Ender's Game and series is awesome
John, I realize I'm commenting on a video made almost two years ago and you probably won't see or care about this but here are my favorites:
The Heralds of Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey. Start with Arrows Trilogy and then go on to the Herald-Mage trilogy. Insight on the adolescent female mind is stunning.
Tales of the 500 Kingdoms by the same. The subversions on classic fairytales are so very interesting. (But a warning though; Mrs. Lackey tends to drag on in her characterizations and does not plot well)
Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Rirodan. Yeah, he places heavy emphasis on how ADHD makes life hard for Percy (and all of his characters frankly) but I still find it enjoyable.
Graceling by Kristen Cashore. A must for fans of the Hunger Games.
Tamora. Pierce. All of her works. Song of the Lioness sets the scene for all of the rest of her world in Tortall, but I prefer the Beka Cooper universe myself.
And I have a fondness for A Wrinkle in Time and Many Waters by Madeline L'Engle.
I'm reading Behind the Beautiful Forevers for my Contemporary Global Literature class and it is wonderful! I love it!
A Clockwork Orange
read the shadow of the wind
THAT'S MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE BOOK IN THE WHOLE WORLD!
doesnt it make you wish you could speak Spanish to be able to read the original version?
vincent janse I kid you not, I am learning Spanish so I can one day read the original!
awesome your living the dream!!
We will see! Between me saying I'm learning it and actually knowing what I am saying by the end could be two very different things!
I'm LOVING the Caster Chronicles (Beautiful Creatures series). I'm on the third book and i really find it interesting. I've also read and loved Divergent, the Harry Potter series, and most recently TFIOS. We read it in ELA and i went home on the first saturday since getting that book, read it, sobbed my eyes out, and read it again. Definitely one of my favorite books!
EVERYBODY PLEASE READ:
The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach!!! I recommend it so much. One of the best books I have ever read. It has changed my life unbelievably and it is so great. A big commitment but it is astonishingly beautiful!
I think u should TFIOS and just see the pain you put us through and then re-write the book and keep Augustus alive, thank you.
