    There is a theory that if you could time travel, you couldn't change the future or the past. Not even the way something happened. You will remember you being there, but others won't. Or the multi-universe theory, were time traveling is just going to a different universe that is slower or faster than your own, causing you to appear in the past or future. Another thing that goes with this is whenever you change a universe, another universe is created and the timelines split, one timeline were the change you caused happened, and another were it didn't.

      As I understand it, the alternate universe is not necessarily moving faster or slower than ours, but you can enter it at any point in its timeline (possibly not of your choosing), and at the point of your entry, it is exactly the same as ours at the equivalent time except for the fact that you are in it. The theory eliminates the grandfather paradox, because if you stop yourself from existing, it's not even the same version of yourself, so you remain unharmed. Also, though, it would mean that the time traveller who is collecting evil babies is likely only taking one evil baby at a time, meaning that in another reality there's no Hitler or Stalin, while here in ours, he's only taken babies we haven't heard.

    • @guthrielinder2555

    • @guthrielinder2555

      Also, if that was the case, it could include babies from all of the realities. Thus, it would include baby Hitler, Stalin, and the babies no one has heard of.

    People assume that time is a strict progression from cause to effect, but actually, from a non-liner non-subjective view point, it's really more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly...timey-wimey... stuff.

    We had to write an informative speech for English class and my topic was time travel, it was completely different from everyone else's. I spoke way too quickly because I have stage fright (even though it wasn't on a stage, I was at the front of the class, but I was still really nervous) but the kids said they learnt a lot from it, so I was glad I taught them something, even if they were going to forget it by the end of the day.

    Did you see my full explanation thread? Because if not, I recommend you go back and read that, as it has a full explanation of stable time loops. Normally, if I went back to elementary school, it would change the timeline, UNLESS back when I was in elementary school, I remember meeting future me. Since in the timeline it is set, that I go back in time to that point, I don't change anything by doing so. But seriously, go back and read that comment thread, as it will explain the concept in detail.

    The easiest way to travel in time is to "simply" steal the Doctor's TARDIS and to just make your way backwards or forwards in time (and space). Or well, just convince the Doctor to take you as an companion, then you don't even have to steal the TARDIS and it's officially your new home. xP

    Also the other problem with the baby orphanage is the social conditions that allowed them to rule in the first place would still in place. For example Nazis were democratically elected by Germans and was only popular because they promised to restore Germany to pre WW1, therefore someone other then Hitler could have come up with it. So as fanatical as Hitler was, had he not been there someone else would have come up with the same concept. So to stop the totalitarianism of Europe in the 1930s you should change the treaty of Versailles because it could be argued that the harsh conditions created the social, political and economic conditions needed for WW2 and the rise of totalitarianism generally speaking

    • @amnlima26
      @amnlima26 10 років тому +1

      You make an awesome point not to mention that the treaty of Versailles would be an extremely difficult thing to change because even Woodrow Wilson who tried to make people understand that financial restitution would cause devastating events that will effect everyone. There was also a Twilight Zone that dealt with the issue of this and by the end they have a theory that although little changes that would not be able to impact major historical events but the minute details of people's lives

    I can't promise this will make sense, but here goes:
    I relate the grandfather paradox to the number 0. Dividing a number by zero is a mathematical impossibility, and yet the imaginary number is still an answer. So, assuming that time travel is feasible (beyond, of course, the continuous stream of traveling through time that we are all a part of), killing one's grandfather could be described as an impossibility that is still possible.

    I AM ON YOUR TEAM WITH THE EVIL BABY ORPHANAGE! The mind-twisting idea that there is ALREADY an EBO is just so freaking cool and interesting because not only would this world (that admittedly does suck considerable at times) be so much worse if it were not for the brave efforts of the creator of the EBO, but also because there would be so many more EBO that we know about already! It's such a good idea, especially if you want to decrease faith in humanity, which is a good story driver.

    You then grab your time machine, and go back in time to stop the ninja, like you remember future you doing earlier. You travel back in time, and appear in front of past you, who is eating a sandwich. You run up to the window and punch the ninja as he jumps through. You then give past you a thumbs up, and walk out the door to go about your business once more. It's all the same you, and no paradoxes or offshoot timelines occur, because you always remember yourself doing the same thing. Thanks!

    The thing about the grandfather paradox is that it applies to any situation. Say you spilled your coffeeand went back in time to prevent the spill. If the spill never happened you would have no incentive to prevent it. If you never prevented it, it would happen. If it happened...
    However, if you went back and told your past self that you need to go back to prevent the spill that past you wouldn't otherwise know about, and past you followed your instructions, that'd be a circular time loop...

    This also plays well into the theory of "Stable time loops", in which for example, you are going about your business, eating a sandwich. And then out of nowhere, a version of you from the future appears in front of you, and punches a ninja who jumps through the window. He gives you a thumbs up, and walks out the front door. Later on in the day, you discover that the ninja was going to assassinate you! Read rest in reply.

    Also, I was watching "Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman" and it said that you could also park your space ship right outside a black hole, and since black holes bend time, you could time travel. However, this would be virtually incontrollable and would only work in theory, as the black hole would spaghettify you/kill you/both before you could travel very far through time.

  • @JettKuso
    @JettKuso 11 років тому

    It would not create a paradox, because as soon as you alter it, the entire timeline shifts. You would never be able to return to "Your time", as your time no longer exists. You are now in a new timeline, with an entirely new sequence of events taking place after the thing you changed. With this said, I am not saying every time you travel back, you change the timeline. This would only occur, if you change an event which you know for certain happened in your timeline. Read the rest in reply.

    A method of time travel that I find interesting is to just wait for the universe to collapse to a point (we'll just assume that's how its going to go) somehow survive that and then wait for the universe to start again and roll forwards to the time you want to change. Since it is technically your future there are no paradoxes. The problem is my the time you get to history to want to change another time travel has already changed history by preventing an earlier horror.

  • @TheProffejor
    @TheProffejor 11 років тому

    The other concept for time travel is simply one in which traveling non-linearly (backwards for example) transports you laterally through dimensions, for example, you could travel to a dimension identical to ours up until you travelled there, but once there, you would actually be in a sister universe in which your grandfather was killed. In that universe you would still exist, because you were traveling from OUR universe, and killing your grandfather wouldn't affect things here.

    My theory (which fits into doctor who theory), can be best described with the grandfather paradox. Say for example, for go back and kill your grandpa. As soon as you do so, the timeline you came back from ceases to exist, and you continue on in the new altered timeline. You would never be born in the new offshoot timeline, and it doesn't matter because the you that would be born would be a different you. Read the rest in reply.

    Ivan IV "the Terrible" of Russia (1530-1584) was a cruel tyrant, who never knew the meaning of moderation; he drank too much, laughed too loudly and hated and loved too fiercely. It goes even deeper than that. Had the terminator not gone back in time, Miles Dyson would not have had access to the tech necessary to create Skynet in the first place. Without Skynet, there would have been no terminators. This is called a "predestination paradox," or a "causality loop." Nothing that happened within that loop could have had any other outcome because, from the paradox's standpoint, it had already happened.

  • @bananas0r0aw3sum

    My theory: Time travel is strictly limited to one group which carefully controls time travel. Part of the group receives travelers when they arrive here (the present), then blur their memories and present them with new identities. They don't remember enough of their past lives to try and "shape" the future, and any impact they make would have happened anyways, so they actually make no impact.
    As to the grandfather paradox, if that were to happen the universe would split (think quantum suicide).

  • @HeavyMetalMouse

    There's always the possibility of closed time-like loops caused by a rotating black hole (possibly with an electrical charge). One theoretical solution to the gravitational equations discusses a very long, very dense, cylindrical mass rotating at high speed, which due to gravitational effects can cause a closed loop that ends before it starts if you fly around it really fast in the right direction. Only a theoretical result, but at least it doesn't need wormholes. :)

    We haven't seen any time travelers because when they come back to our time, they branch off into a new reality that starts as an exact copy of our universe and differs as time goes on, and thus do not interfere with our lives.
    This also takes care of the problem of paradoxes.
    If you did go back in time and you killed your grandfather, you would live in an alternate reality in which you live and your grandfather doesn't, and he would go on living without you in the other reality.

  • @JettKuso

    That sounds like a fair enough conclusion, however... I do not believe ALL time traveling would change a timeline, or move to another one. In the case of a stable time loop, since event X (Time travel) always happened in timeline A, the timeline would not shift to timeline B. It likely would only shift to timeline B if you actually change something that you KNOW happened, which I don't think all time travel does. I could go on about time travel for weeks, but the character limit holds me back...

    People seem to forget that just because as you approach the speed of light and time slows down doesn't mean that this isn't applicable to slower speeds, too. If you are moving at 1 mph you're still approaching the speed of light; therefore, time is still slowing down around you. This would mean that time to you is slower than it is to other people around you who remain stationary.

    My theory of time travel involves the multiverse theory: An infinite number of universes containing an infinite amount of possibilities. Everything that could possibly happen has happened in a separate universe. Therefore, when you travel back in time, or forward in time, you are also travelling into another universe, and appearing in the past or future of that universe. We aren't inundated with time travelers perhaps because this is one universe that just doesn't have arriving time travelers.

    There is a theory that if you went back in time, a sort if 'paradox firewall' is formed, preventing you from affecting events so you can only observe. Then there was another one I heard that if you opened wormhole through time, that if the times are close enough there will be a 'feedback loop' that collapses the wormhole at the same instant you open it, but you see nothing.

    "Most people assume time is a strict progression of cause to effect but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint. It's more like a big ball of wibbily-wobbily, timey-wimey... STUFF."

    Speaking of time travel, I love going back and watching old vlogbrothers videos. The nostalgia of a sidebar instead of the new doobly-doo reminds me of how long I've been watching these two. Also, as a side note, I played a demo of the evil baby orphanage card game at gencon this year, and i NEED to own it and the Nerdfighter expansion where you have evil babies John and Hank.

    This is very similar to my view, except I don't believe timelines are destroyed or erased, but go about their business normally with the time machine having no effect, thus, time travel is, in essence, a one-way trip to another timeline. The very act of time travelling changes the timeline because something that was not originally in that timeline is now there, and thus changes how that timeline will progress.

    There is also the multiple timeline theroy. Every time you travel pastwards, you create another timeline unaffecting, and uneffected by you own. Unfortunately, this means you can never go back to your own time.

    There's also the infinite number of ways to create a time paradox -- that, of course, depends on your views of time and parallel universes (if time is always changing due to time travel, an infinite number of parallel universes opens up every instant; if you view time as an unchanging line that will right itself anyway, you won't create a paradox, but new universes still open up). Either way, there's still a parallel universe where nothing has changed...now we need to find out how to get there.

    My theory about time travel is that we see time travelers all the time, but federal regulations require that they wear our clothes and act like us, so we won't know that they're actually time travelers. And also it's like in Doctor Who where there are fixed points in History and no one knows where they are, so federal regulation has also required that time travelers not interfere with any events that are major news at the time.

    Actually that is a result of them going so quickly, but you bring up an interesting point. Nobody knew that they needed to be adjusted when they had the first GPS sattelites in space and so when they were trying to take the temperatures of the earth they got them all wrong.

    For forward, you can go to the horizon of a black hole. Just don't cross the event horizon, or you will slowly die by black hole, or not really die, but do whatever one does when inside a black hole, or circling toward it, although, by the, time will be so warped that I doubt anyone could call it moving.

    There's also the fact that you'd have to transport yourself in space and time, because if you just traveled trough time, you'd end up where you started, and since the earth is always moving, there'd be a very good chance you'd end up floating around in space...

    Technically we're all seeing each other at different times. Because it takes a finite amount of time for light to bounce off a Cat into Hank's eyes. That Cat Hank is seeing is actually what the cat looked like a thousandth of a mini-second in the past. The further we are away, the longer it takes time to travel into Hank's eyes, the more into the past Hank is looking. A good example is stars. Those stars are thousands of billions of light years away, the light that has only just reached us could be thousands of years old, which means, when you wish on a star, your wish will never come true, - because chances are, that star has died a long time ago.

    I think, if time travel is/was/will ever be possible, the reason we don't encounter time travelers, that we know of, is because time travel/ time machines has/ have not been invented/perfected yet, so in order to avoid "spoilers" we aren't allowed to know of it yet.

    another version of the grandfather paradox is if you go back in time and tell you grandpa to not marry your grandma. then you dont exist. then you can never go back in time to tell your grandpa not to marry your grandma. then you do exist. then you go back in time and tell your grandpa to not marry your grandma and so forth. time travel gives me a headache
