    The worst betrayal that I have ever had as a reader is finding out that the book series I had just finished was actually a series within a series of series. As in, I had read a standalone series of books that took place in the middle of a larger series. There was no end to it! So I gave up.

    I agree with everything you said, except our feelings on the deckled edges. I think they are so aesthetically pleasing. Deckled edges do cost more to manufacture because rather than just send the paper through to be blunt cut, it has to be shifted and pattern cut. It adds a few steps on the production line. I don't know why I am telling you that. I'm sure if you cared to know you already would. ha.
    I also dislike cover changes, and mismatched covers. If all of the other books in the series have foreboding landscapes, don't stick a man with a sword on a horse on book 4!

    • @marklewis662
      @marklewis662 10 років тому

      What is the attraction of deckled edges? I'd never heard of the until recently. :-)

    • @BunnyCates
      @BunnyCates 10 років тому +5

      Mark Lewis For me, I like them because they look make the book look vintage. I'm also a fan of foil edged pages, and woven binding instead of just glue. So for me, its just a "pretty". There really isn't a purpose for them, nowadays other than that. If I remember my history correctly, all books were deckled back when books were first mass produced, it wasn't on purpose, just how the process was ended up. Eventually, deckled gave way to blunt cut, and the deckled edges became "collectible", an extravagance and a sign of wealth. I think thats right, anyway.

      It's funny you say that. We had some of those at the library I worked at, and my coworkers and I literally thought that those were the books that were screwed up in production and they sold them to libraries for a discount. We couldn't think of any other reason why they would look so bad.

  • @TacComControl
    @TacComControl 10 років тому +10

    The edging issue you're having is on books that both cost more and don't, in a sense. QUICK LESSON IN BOOKBINDING TIME!
    So as books are made in the older style, they are made by folding sheets of paper outside of themselves in groupings, then stitching them all together before stitching them to the front and back plate, then covering those plates with leather and cord. Very little has changed in this process, namely that we now use adhesives instead of stitching. Now, normally, one would take a drop blade to those edges to cut them off and make a nice flushed edge, but hipster book manufacturers leave it on to give the book a more "Old-timey" feel.
    You don't see this on paperback books for a very specific reason. Namely that paperback books aren't made this way. They are made by taking a stack of pages, and dipping the entire stack in an adhesive glue on one side, then slapping it into the cover "Sheet", folding it shut, pressing it hard as hell, then cutting off whatever excess remains if the rest didn't go according to plan. However, by the nature of how a hardback is manufactured, although not THAT different at their core, the possibility of the non-sheared edges remains. One of the reasons they don't cut those edges off is that getting around the hardback itself, which overlaps, can be a bit of a pain, but it's really not THAT hard, so it still makes no sense that it isn't done.

    I DESPISE books that don't tell me what series they are a part of and the number in the series. It's so, so dumb. Like, are they trying to get people to buy it on accident thinking it's a standalone story, or the first of a series? I don't know why you wouldn't just put that info right on the spine as the defacto standard unless you're trying to trick people, which is a real shitty thing to do, and not very good for business in the long-run I would think.
    Also, name of the wind AND ocean at the end of the lane? Instant respect for your taste in books.

    I was reading a book once and half way through I decided to read about the author. To my surprise, there was a massive spoiler on the page before. The author was answering questions and one of them was "Why did you choose to have _______ die?" It was written in huge, bold letters at the top of the page. I was like "ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!" Why in the world would an author put something like that in that spot!!!!!

      cami dourado To answer your question partially, the author had absolutely nothing to do with that decision. That would be the typesetter at the publisher. They control page layout.
      As a reasoning for it, though still doesn't excuse how stupid an idea it was, the way that books are bound they have to have pages in exact multiples of 4. That's why books used to have random ads, now sometimes just blank pages or those sort of bonus features, at the end to round out the numbers, and I guess they didn't want to shove in 4 more.

    Another gripe that I have. Why are some books printed in such low quality that I can ERASE THE WORDS WITH MY HANDS?

  • @fakjbf
    @fakjbf 10 років тому +17

    I actually like the deckled edge, it's makes the book feel less impersonal. I like my books with a loose spine where I can see the cracks in the coloring, a few dog-eared pages and even slight stains. They give the book texture and feeling, something to be enjoyed with the text. I want reading to be a multi-sensory experience that I enjoy, and having a pristine straight-edged book takes away that dimensionality, turning it into just paper with squiggles arranged in a particular pattern.

    • @MyNameIsGagan
      @MyNameIsGagan 10 років тому +1

      I agree with you for the most part; I love the feeling of a used book, where you can smell the cigarette smoke of a previous reader, and where people paused, and underlined quotes, etc. But those jagged pages are kind of difficult to use, and it doesn't give me the feeling that this a well loved book, it just looks like the printers messed up or something.

  • @SerendipitousSky
    @SerendipitousSky 10 років тому +7

    A deckle edge was originally the standard, because all paper was handmade, but now it is considered a sign of a higher end book because it used to mean that the paper slurry was poured into an individual frame, dried, and removed, instead of being made on a Fourdrinier machine, which sliced the paper uniformly. I just think it's neat that something that was inevitable, then became sought after, and is now intentionally done by machines...either way, I LOVE the deckle edge.

    Those Kindle e-readers make reading so much easier for me, so much so that reading from physical books is an annoyance. I can adjust the size of the text, I can hold it in one hand and in any position I want, if I don't know what a word means I can just press it and up comes a definition, it's smaller and more portable than an average book (let alone thinner, I can just about fit it in my pocket), I can highlight stuff without a pen, I know how long left I have in the book down to the very minute, books are ludicrously cheap if not completely free, the book doesn't degrade and pages aren't torn out, and I don't even have to leave the house; it's all instant. I do like having books on a shelf for which I can boast about my sizeable collection, but for me, the actual reading of the book and what I take away from it outweighs all the benefits of having a collection akin to Alaska Young's.
    The main reason as to why everyone doesn't immediately go out and buy a Kindle is that they'd have to re-buy all of their books, which sucks, but also the sentimental value of reading physical books is a downside for some. People love to flick through pages and feel the soft touch of paper and have the authenticity and realness of reading a physical book. It feels personal in a way, that you're reading off real ink on a real page, and not cold metal. Also, cover art is pretty cool. But I reject all of these traditions in favour of having a more accessible and easier reading experience that I otherwise wouldn't have.

    Ooooh, books not indicating that they're part of a series when they are. HAAAAAAATE. I bought a book, which I thought was a standalone story, but it turns out it was part 3 of a trilogy.

      +Gaby Vale P. I remember in my middle school library there being a series of books that was so amazingly cryptic about a sequel's continuity to the rest of the series the librarian taped a sign to the shelf that had all the books in order. As in instead of using numbers like a normal person, it would say something like "the prequel to the sequel of a book in a series that is the prequel to the original series which is actually in an alternate universe and provides no context to the original book at all!" I think it was Guardians of Ga'hoole or Warriors or something like that.

      Paul MacKnight I'm sorry, I understand your first sentence and totally agree but I'm extremely confused about what you are trying to say in the second :P Not trying to be snarky here, literally just confused.

    • @anmoljoshi7250
      @anmoljoshi7250 10 років тому +1

      TheBuddsO What Paul means is that the spoiler thing is a little like when dictionaries define words, and their definitions have the word they were originally trying to define in it. For example, if you look up the word, "feminist," you might find a definition like, "one who supports feminism." What are you supposed to get from that? What if you don't even know what feminism IS?

    • @TheBuddsO
      @TheBuddsO 10 років тому

    The thing about publishers not putting numbers on the books in a series is so infuriating! It's why I always check on Goodreads before buying.
    But my theory is that bookstores tend to only stock the most recent release in a series (unless it's a super popular best-seller) and people would be less likely to buy a book if it's book 4 in a series, and therefore they're better off getting you to unwittingly buy book 4, safe in the knowledge you're gonna come back and ask for books 1-3

    I can just about stand it when I start off a series with the paperbacks then I end up with hardbacks. But you know what hurts my soul? When an author switches publishers part way through the series so the spines look different. The Maximum Ride series by James Patterson goes through 5 different ones in the space of 8 books and seeing them on my shelf is so annoying. Also, with the series of unfortunate events I had 12 books, all identical, then my aunt buys me the 13th book FROM AMERICA. Different spine! RAGE!
