The Best (Recent) Book Covers Including MINE!

OK, this is exciting and scary. So, while I wait for the time at which we are all coordinated for this thing to go live let me tell you how this worked.
First, the designer got the manuscript, then they read it, then they sent me three sample covers that I did not like. They were obviously rough mockups, but I didn't like the direction. There was good energy, but all of the fonts were hand-written and, honestly, I wanted it to look visibly distinct from a John Green book.
So then I sent them a few things:
1. Three images that I really liked that were not book covers. They all had bold colors, repeating patterns, and felt illustrated but now hand-drawn.
2. A few of my favorite recent book covers.
3. A few lines, less than 400 words about what I really hoped for that included this sentence: "Getting the mix between high energy and fun and deadly serious is something I thought a lot about when writing, and it's hard, but it may be an impossible thing to hope for in a cover design."
Then a few weeks went by during which time I was assured that a lot of time and thought were going into sending a long a more finished product that took my thoughts into account. I feel very lucky that I got to have this much feedback.
What I then got in my email was five designs...three of which were color variations on the final product. And I was like, "YES! THIS!" but then of course I had some thoughts. I asked for some other color treatments, and I also suggested adding the eyes to one of the Carls, which I think is a very cool touch. In the end, I went with one of the original color schemes but was glad I had seen the others anyway. And with a couple of very very minor finishing thoughts we had it.
I have a lot more thoughts on covers and I could critique great design all day, but I only had four minutes. I feel bad that there are so many great covers out there (and on my bookshelf right now) that I didn't get to talk about, but there are only so many minutes in a vlogbrothers video and only so many hours in a day!

I judge the hell out of a book based on the cover. It is the book's only chance to catch a reader's eye. I definitely appreciate when people step outside of the tropes that have come to the forefront in cover art.
That and the title
Hanks Book's cover reminds me of the spongebob screen cards, like the one that says "Four Years Later" you know what I mean?

I love the slanty font on his book cover and how it contrasts with the figures in the background; it reminds me of Rene Magritte's Golconda.

The cover of Watchmen is supposed to be the first panel of the comic, at the time a radical notion. And for a while, whenever they did a new edition of Watchmen, Dave Gibbons would do a new cover that rewound the beginning by one panel, creating a new cover.

I love how we have seen the transition of Hank being modest and quiet about his book to being so excited. His tweets this morning made me so excited to see the cover and it looks so good. The colors are different than what you would expect and yet work so well together. Can’t wait to read it!

UM I WANT THIS ON MY WALL. It is such a cool and bold design and I LOVE IT. I feel like sometimes you really can judge an actual book by its cover because I know from this cover that I will enjoy the book (also because I've loved every creative ~thing~ Hank has put out so there's that too.)

the english covers for the twilight saga are extremely cool in a really weird way
JennyM1998 when it first came out one of my friends was reading it, and the original cover had like a cartoon girl on it with a big head, I remember her telling us it was so good and none of us believed her. Then a few years later it exploded!
I completely forgot about that cover until you just mentioned it!
Science with Katie i totally agree with you! whoever designed it knew what they were doing... it feels a little bit dangerous and certainly has that fantasy feel.

It also looks a lot like vair, as in the "fur" in heraldry.
I LOVE IT! It's so different! It's bold and striking and I honestly can't think of another cover that looks like it!
It reminds me a bit of The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness... which is also the only glow-in-the-dark book cover I've ever seen!

I love love love how the blue and the figures are the background of the cover, but adding the eyes on the one gives it more of a foreground presence. It gives me a lot of questions, and it's wonderful

That cover is beautiful! The contrast between the blue checkered background and the green text, the tones and shades of the colors used, the stylized font - it's a pretty awesome cover, Hank. There are some high expectations for that story now. :D

I make book covers for amateur and beginner authors. It's fun, and challenging, and frustrating, and not very financially rewarding, but I think I do good work.
A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC! One of my favorite books. 😍 I agree that the cover for this book is gorgeous. It's genius, actually. It tells so much about the story and its world without spoiling it.

i'm probably in the minority, but i miss the days of illustrated book covers and movie posters rather than photos collaged together or just text with some graphic design elements. these days, when every cover is just very loud text on a minimalist background, it's the illustrations that stand out most to me. i also like that AART's new cover kind of rides the line between illustration and graphic design in that sense.
toughtink yeah. I love the covers for the Throne of Glass and the Lotus War series, as well as the The Hate You Give. There's still some minimalism to it but the choice of just having the main character on the cover in way that tells you so much about her character is pretty cool to me.
I love the cover for It Devours! It's very in-your-face, but still mysterious. Kinda like the book itself.
"April is a graphic designer and very into color choice" ME TOOOOO. I could go on a whole rant about my general book cover opinions, but no one wants that. BUT I LOVE YOUR BOOK COVER, HANK. My favorite part is the font choice and the texture on the type. It looks kinda like it was put on there with a paint roller. Count me a fan of your designer.

YAAAAAS, the COVER! The cover of a book is really a fascinating invitation to readers and speaks so much outward. Like it's calling a certain audience forward. Also, the frame at 3:56 has me chortling so much. HUZZAH, HANK!

You know what I love about the whole fact that you wrote this book?? I watched all of your videos just I've a year ago for the 1st time. I read Johns books because I was familiar with them and they were the right genera for me to read. I bought Turtles and saw you guys on the tour. Then I heard that YOU had written a book! I realized that obviously you would write a very different book from John, and likely a book that I would normally walk right past in the book store because it is not what I would normally read. Yet some how, here I sit having already preordered and being externally excited to go out of my comfort zone and try something new!!! Your cover is somehow exactly what I would expect it to be and exciting and eye catching and wonderful! Thank y ou for helping me step out of a box I had trapped my self in!! I can't wait to read it and experience something new!
Unlike basically everyone else, this looks to me like a very John green book cover and honestly this style of book cover annoys me. But I'm glad hank loves it.

I have to say that I....don't like it..? maybe I'm not the target audience but the cover seems too masculine, too neon for my liking. I'm happy it doesn't have a headless figure on the front, but the bold slanted sans serf font is doing nothing for me.

I knew this was EXACTLY how the book cover was going to look!! For some reason, these are the colors I think of when I think of "Hank Green". A BRIGHT lime green that evokes science-y memories and a nice variation on cobalt blue. Perfect.

Using an all over pattern on the entirety of the cover is a bold choice, I like it. And I like how the words break up the pattern and the pattern sometimes overlaps the letters. It’s a good cover.
Aaaaa it looks so good! Honestly when you posted the picture of the cover with everything scribbled out except the edges I was like “okay I have a complete understanding of what the full cover is going to look like” and then I was WRONG and I LOVE IT.
I really love the work of Chip Kidd when it comes to book covers. I feel like he truly changed the game! And his novels are a delight too.

I love the colour! Great shades of blue and green! And I realise I have similar tastes in book covers as you, Hank. Bright, sort of simple (but if you think about it or look closer there are hidden elements/clues). This, in turn, explains why I'm not a fan of many fantasy, sci-fi and crime covers, they're usually to full of detail and in muted colours.
The eyes on the one Carl is instantly captivating. I'm preordering this.

Yeah that's a bold colour choice if I ever saw one. I don't find it too pleasing on the eyes but at the same time, it stands out so much that I'll never miss it and if I see blue and yellowish-green together I'll always remember this.

I like the way the people are pushing in front of the letters, not to get in the way but just enough that you have to notice that it's people instead of just a random pattern. Also I love the colours (I was a little worried earlier in the video, cause some of your favorite covers are so bold and bright that they give me a headache)
i especially love the cover because i loved it immediately when i saw it, but i could also tell that the cover will be more than just aesthetically pleasing after i read the novel. like i can tell the cover means something and i can't wait to read the book and figure out all those details

I love it! I love how the figures in the background, with the one with the eyes, is kinda like those movie moments where you've got the one person standing out walking down a crowded street. You know what I mean? I love lots of movies that do that, so I think I'm gonna like this book too. I hope so, I've already pre-ordered like, weeks ago, lol.

Ohhhh, I love that book cover. A lot of my book choices is literally just want I’ve been drawn to in the book store - and this is totally a book cover that I could gravitate towards.
I’m so excited! I am so excited to be able to experience Hanks identity as a writer! Plus the vivid color choice is a great way to remind the reader to pick up the book again. Like, if I looked at my bookshelves(200 plus books), I would immediately be able to find that on the shelf. It really stands out and I can’t wait to see how the writing stands out in September! ❤️❤️❤️❤️📚📕
I like that there are some whispers of similarity between this cover's layout and the layout of TATWD. Bold title, bright color, sort of abstract background. It's absolutely distinct and different and certainly doesn't look like a John Green joint for sure; but there are enough vague similarities and design echoes to make the books themselves look like brothers. I love it.

Amazeballs!! SO excited! As a bookseller with 10 years under my belt I can tell you that a cover can definitely make or break a book. I’ve had so many customers just buy a book because they like the cover. They like to tell you all about it at check out. Myself, I’ve been scared by some of the covers because they were boring...but not yours! Though if it was a boring cover… us NerdFighters would read it anyway! We are here for substance!! Still the cover is amazeballs!
So glad he mention It Devours! I am super fond of the covers of all the WTNV books - including (or possibly especially) the script books. If you don't have a copy yourself, please look them up, they're all gorgeous.
Anyway! I love the cover, Hank. They did a great job with it. I love the background & I trust you, that the very bold, highway-vest green text fits with the nature of the book & its star character. Congratulations!
(PS I got flashbacks from that book rants old video that Hank did, in which he addressed the "headless YA fiction ladies". Also, "books that look like Twilight but aren't Twilight - no, why would you do that?!" Anyone else remembering with me?)
