Hi. Thanks for the feedback, really appreciated! My current schedule is lightning up a bit, which will allow me to get done a couple of videos in the next two to three weeks. Leave suggestions on what you want to see!
Personally, I'd really like to see RWR (no sure how it is being called in MiG's), countermeasures explained... Additionally - if it is not big of a deal - would like to see AWACS communications/messages explained... :)
xxJohnxx Hey i followed you discription but my missle won´t launch... I have all switches in the right position an do the mission:how to fire a aa-missle. But if the missle looked on the target in 1.5km they wont launch.. The "fire the gun" key is right or ?
Hey. No, that is not entirely correct. There is a separate "weapon release" keybind you have to set. The "fire gun" or "trigger" is just for the gun itself.
Also I try not to lock the enemy aircraft until it is close enough to fire if it is AI. Otherwise their Radar warning device will be screaming at them and you are giving them a full 5 minutes of prior warning that you are going to shoot at them. In multiplayer if I am within visual range and flanking, or cold to my enemy I will turn my radar off so by time they know I am onto them a missle is already heading for them. It's the only way to beat the more modern jets, they rely on their radar too much and not their eyes :)
Yes it is possible to use it in the so called "Game Mode", which disables quit a lot of the simulation stuff. However, I strongly suggest to take the time it takes to learn the aircraft fully. It is a very good feeling if you start to get the hang for the systems!
xxJohnxx hi, thanks for the videos! I have a problem with air to ground! every time I dive for a rockets run after setting the enginge to idle it simply goes off! there is no time for relighting the enginge in battle! is this common?!
nymerie Hi! Well, quit hard to tell what exactly is the problem, but as a suggestion: Keep an eye on the G-meter. At negative and especially around 0G the engine is only getting fuel for a couple of seconds. If you hold 0G or negative G for too long, it will cause the engine to flame out, as the fuel system of the MiG is not built for that.
Glad i found your vids. Keep doing this. You explain the stuff well and much more simple than the flightmanual. Excellent job. Von ein nachbarn aus der Niederlande. Yeah my german sucks haha.
+WelshZeCorgi That is the gun-camera. It is a camera that is only mounted during training, which will record whenever the trigger is pressed. After the flight, the footage will be analysed and it can be determinated if you would have hit the target or not. By default, the camera is not present in the Mig-21 (as it would be in the real world), however, if you turn on the power switch for the camera, it will appear. I forgot to do that for the second part of the video ;)
+Daniel Solbrekke Thanks for the feedback, always good to hear that the videos have some good use! Nope, I am actually from Austria, however I do have a lot of Norwegian buddies I often talk to. Probably had an effect on my accent. ;)
I found your videos really helpful, thank you. I downloaded the attached Air-To-Air miz file. When I try and run the miz it takes me to the map view and that's it. Not sure what's going on could you please check? I've used your other miz file without any issues.
Awesome Tutorial, thanks! While the Simulation is amazing (thx Leatherneck!!) actually flying this aircraft seems really hard. Both times (IR and Radar Missiles) you were almost in Gun Range, and as mentioned in your Radar tutorial, maintaining a stable lock is almost impossible. This makes the Mig21 not particularly "combat effective" compared to modern fighters, does it? How does the Mig-21 hold up against contemporary Jets? Like F-86 or F-4 or others...? Also, what's the advantage of using Radar-Guided missiles if the range is not significantly larger than that of the IR missiles?
Yes, the MiG-21 is quit hard to operate it seems. Obviously you can't compare it against a 4th or 5th gen fighter. However, at least in the sim, the MiG-21 seems to hold up quit nicely against aircraft like the F-4. Quit equal in terms of flight performance I would guess. In the video I got quit close until firing because I have been trying to explain the steps. The missiles have a longer range than that. On a non-manoeuvring target you should be able to get a hit if you fire from a distance of 3-4kms. Talking about combat effectiveness is a bit difficult. The MiG-21 was designed to intercept and engage bombers. The small payload, low fuel capacity and high speed are a result of that. The aircraft can go from pretty much cold-and-dark to taxiing within 60 seconds. Giving it a pretty much unbeatable response time. Not being a fighter, it still holds up against aircraft like the F-4 quit well. I guess it all depends on pilot-skill, situation and a bit of luck in the end. The MiG seems to be quit nimble and manoeuvrable for an aircraft of its class. The F-86 however (as you mentioned it) is no problem for it. You have better sensors, weapons and more speed as well as more engine power. However, often you will read about a lot of MiGs (-21s) getting swiped out of the sky by Western aircraft in conflicts in ex-Soviet or other countries, which leaves the impression that the MiG-21 is not as good as it's Western counterparts. However, this might have one reason: Training. An interesting read about that (from an F-86 pilot fighting MiG-15s in Korea) can be found here: acepilots.com/russian/rus_aces.html . About the Radar vs. IR guided missiles: The radar-guided missiles (especially the R-3R) have some advantages against their IR counterpart (in the case of the R-3R this would be the R-3S). The R-3R radar guided missile has limited all aspect capability, which allows you to launch at an enemy aircraft from a bigger spectrum of directions (even a head-on hit can be scored on a lucky day). The R-3S will not only miss from anything than a rear aspect, but it probably won't even track/find the target if it's seeker can't directly see the hot exhaust. Seeker capability probably is the biggest advantage for the R-3R over the R-3S, which generally allows you to fire from a longer distance. In a turning fight however, I will definitely use the R-3S or R-60M1 over any radar guided missiles, just because the limitations of the radar.
I just realised I posted a link to the right website but not to the article I was talking about. I will provide a link as soon as I am able to find it!
Well, I have set up a mission with the required triggers to spawn the bomber. You can find a download link in the description and have a look yourselfe!
skypiratez Yes, that is the gun camera. Used to record the flight of the aircraft through the gun-sight. Used for post flight analysis of engagments and other parts of the flight.
+TEHGROUND Well it depends. Both the F-15 and the Su-27 have gotten the so called AFM (Advanced Flight Model) which is quit decent. Other airframes have the SFM (Simplyfied flight Model) which is noticable worse. However, some aircraft (Su-33 and others) should get updated to AFM in the near future as well.
***** Yep, ground clutter was a problem for the early radars. I would recommend watching my Radar tutorial. It shows you how to use the diffrent methodes for de-cluttering your radar screen! :)
Thanks! I placed the enemies within the mission editor and set them to "Late Activation". Then I created a couple of trigger actions. One of them, at mission start, enabled the radio option to spawn the enemies. The second trigger action would then activate the enemy unit. In the video's description is the mission file. I recommend downloading it and opening it with the mission editor. There you can see how I set everything up.
Be nice if there was an option to replace all the Cyrillic with other languages so we can easily see what everything does without having to hover the cursor over them..............
***** Yes, it is realistic, but it won't allow you to fly the real aircraft. You might learn systems operation, you might learn basic flight manuvers but take-offs and landings will screw you over.
Damn, you are really good at making tutorials...
I mean REALLY good...
Please keep making more tutorials for a MIG-21...

Excellent tutorial John, shot down my first aircraft today using the MiG-21 and after taking note of this wonderful tutorial, superb sir, thank you.
Good job! Thanks for the feedback and glad to hear that it was useful!

Hey, just wanted to say you have one of the best, most helpful channels around. Thanks and keep it up!
You speak really like a line-pilot it's very satisfying ! Good video !

xxJohnxx I thought so. It's in the manual as well... Thanks mate :)
Thanks. Your videos help me a lot understanding the Mig-21.
Great video again, just getting into A2A with Mig21. Thanks!
Most of the migs IR guided missiles are rear aperture, meaning you need to see the rear of the aircraft.
Very very good video! Simple and informative, thank you!
Klasse! These tutorials are really useful, thanks for taking the time to do and post them! :)

Thanks for the feedback, very appricated!
Your German is not too bad. At least you could get the message across! :)
Very nice tutorial keep it up, looking forward to more.
Thanks! Very thorough tutorial.
Great video man, love the tutorial
Great tutorial John!
Great stuff. You made it look so easy :-D
What was that weird-looking, black device that was mounted onto your HUD in the first 4 minutes of the video that disappeared at 4:30?
+WelshZeCorgi That is the gun-camera. It is a camera that is only mounted during training, which will record whenever the trigger is pressed. After the flight, the footage will be analysed and it can be determinated if you would have hit the target or not.

xxJohnxx Thanks.
Do MIG-21BIS in this game have radar guided version of R-3(AA-2) missile?
THANK YOU, so little information on this. Liked your weapon overview as well. Btw, are you from Scandinavia? Sounds pretty Swedish :)
+Daniel Solbrekke Thanks for the feedback, always good to hear that the videos have some good use!
Nope, I am actually from Austria, however I do have a lot of Norwegian buddies I often talk to. Probably had an effect on my accent. ;)
Yeah, your videos made my day (and MIG-21 Life) much better. Hahah, I'm norwegian myself :)
what did he change at the gun sight at 4:30. Why is the pipper closer together?
I changed the "Target Wingspan"-Input on the Gunsight. It is the dial on the righthand side of the Gunsight.
oh, ok thanks

Thank you for your feedback and the information about the non working miz file. I will have a look at the problem this weekend!
Awesome Tutorial, thanks!

What is the point with the gunsight camera?
Very nice thank you man !
Can you do a start up tutorial?
Search UA-cam channel - pickingthatbanjo . That's who taught me
How did you spawn an enemy bomber in front of you easily? I want to practice but I don't want to set up a mission each time.
Well, I have set up a mission with the required triggers to spawn the bomber. You can find a download link in the description and have a look yourselfe!
Thank you for the explanation. But what happened to the Gun Camera ? lol
Good spot! I restarted the mission and forgot to turn it back on :D
xxJohnxx Are you guys reffering to the black "periscope" thingy messing the view of the gun sight in the first part of the video?
skypiratez
Yes, that is the gun camera. Used to record the flight of the aircraft through the gun-sight. Used for post flight analysis of engagments and other parts of the flight.
so how do i move the horizontal bars on the radar?
+KrinkovGaming You can't.
what is the program you use to look around like that?
+KrinkovGaming I am using a head tracking device called TrackIR.
oh alright, i was wondering if you were using facetracknoir
Thinking about buying Flaming Cliffs 3, is the flight model simplified or is it also pretty advanced?
+TEHGROUND Well it depends. Both the F-15 and the Su-27 have gotten the so called AFM (Advanced Flight Model) which is quit decent. Other airframes have the SFM (Simplyfied flight Model) which is noticable worse.

Which yellow bars do you mean? Do you have a lock button assinged? You understand of bringing the target into the lock "gate"?

Ah got it, thank you!
Sehr guten Video! 😂😅
That's a lot of fucking switches to fire some damn missiles XD
thanks a lot!
Be nice if there was an option to replace all the Cyrillic with other languages so we can easily see what everything does without having to hover the cursor over them..............
You can switch over to the English cockpit in the options. Then all the texts will be English instead of Cyrillic.
Really? Never honestly noticed that thanks, still learning how to use the a-10 effectively and that was putting me off using the russian stuff :)
Calum Knight
Hehe, no problem ;)
So can we fly a real mig after this tutorial ?
Definitely no.
ISIS is probably training right now with this to fly their migs lol
Dimitri Miles
hahahha
Dimitri Miles you mean their (last) mig. 2 have been bombed dead on the runway by assads air force :)

Yes, it is realistic, but it won't allow you to fly the real aircraft. You might learn systems operation, you might learn basic flight manuvers but take-offs and landings will screw you over.
The Russians really loved there switches did't they. Are modern fighters this complicated?
