Operating the radar, flying the jet and maintaining situational awareness sound about as easy as taking a shit while doing cartwheels. Very solid tutorial so thank you very much.
To hold a lock better, hold down the lock button. What this does is focuses the radar sweep to a much smaller area infront of you, giving you much quicker updates and helping you re-acquire the lock.
Probably the best video of all in this MiG-23 Bis playlist. Using this realistic but antiquated radar to its full extend is arguably the most important skill one has to master!
This was very informative video about the radar. Didn't need to read the manual to understand the radar functions and all in first viewing time. Best 10min spent learning Mig-21Bis!
Fantastic video, the jamming part of it was incredibly useful. Could you possibly do a video on the jamming/countermeasures pod at some point in the the future? The manual is not exactly full of information on it so it is something of a mystery to say the least.
Im impressed with how stable you fly. I have this plane as well in DCS but i find it nearly impossible to fly, so nervous. I am hoping it has something to do with my setup otherwise its a waste of money for me.
Great job! Wish you'd do a few examples on how far out they were, I didn't quite get that. And also HNNGH! I was waiting for a launch the entire time! :D
THanks... Funny thing is, I have the F5EII tiger as well, and although the radar is "newer Tech" this radar actually has some very nice options. Either radar though is VERY difficult to pick up aircrafts.
Nice video... Haven't played DCS for a while and haven't tried this on just yet, but few questions popped: 1. When the radar is "out of juice" - the only way you can engage the target is by heathseakers and cannons? 2. How to know how much cooling fluid left? 3. Does ground crew "refill" cooling fluid for this?
1. Yes, a red warning lamp will illuminate and indicate that the radar has to be turned off immediately. Failure to do so will result in it getting damaged a couple of minutes later. 2. You don't. The radar can be in standby for roughly 40-50 minutes and on for about 20 minutes. You could run a stop watch whenever you have the radar going. 3. Yes, when you refuel the aircraft the ground crew will also refuel radar cooling liquid and other stuff (like compressed air for braking).
Super Videos, Mann! Weiter so! 2 questions: - Which hotkey is the default key for dipensing flares/chaff? I can't find it! - How to "turn on" the mirror in the cockpit?
nymerie Danke für den Kommentar! - Default keybind is LCtrl+Space (SPRD Drop / or ASO dro chaff flares). - Mirrrors can be turned on within the Options -> Gameplay -> Mirrors. If you want you can have a look at this forum post: forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=2382696&postcount=11 It explains how to simply modify one of the files to allow you to toggle on and off the mirrors within a mission, which can be quit handy, especially if you get low performance during certain points, and you want to reduce FPS drop by turning the mirrors off.
how can i play this game i love this stuff .. what equipment do i need i have never seen this game befor .. i have played halks for the playstasion but this is more exiting .. i think i need a PC and stuff .???
You will need a quite powerfull PC, a joystick (even a cheap 45$ joystick will do for a beginner) and DCS itselfe. It can be downloaded from here: www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/ for free. It includes two aircraft, the Su-25 and the P-51 (without weapons). The aircraft shown in my videos can be bought seperatly.
Do you use steam or original DCS? Are there any differences in graphics? I cant get my graphics to the point of yours even if i got everything maxed out in my DCS Steam edition
I use the original/standalone DCS. I don't think that there are any diffrences between both versions. These are my current graphics settings (not sure if they are still the same as in the above video, as it has been a couple of years now): imgur.com/qnuD1gB.png
great vid - very informative - now to test things out using the mission file provided - please confirm where this should be installed - i downloaded it expecting it to have a .miz extension but it didn't? (just some advice please) regards :)
amazing! I am a bit confused with all the DCS games and versions... If I want to buy a DCS game that will have all the Jets available and all of them being with clickable cockpits, how much do I have to pay? And where can I find more info? Thanks
+CornerrecordZ You can get more Info on the Eagle Dynamics website: www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/ Buying all the modules at once will cost you a couple hundred US dollars. However, that is not recommended for a beginner anyway. Each module takes some time to learn. You will have to read the manuals, watch YT tutorials and fly the aircraft for a couple of months before you can use it efficently. Most people have not more than 3 aircraft they usually fly and are able to fully operate, so there is no point in buying all modules at the same time.
You mentioned modern fighters could easily jam this radar. How could NATO jam it in the 80s and how much better could they jam it now? This radar came online in the mid-70s. What kind of improvements did it have before it was replaced by the Kypo? From understanding that radar can't be easily jammed and is on the Indian mig 21s?
Badhabit_BC Thanks for the feedback! The SOD wave selector is part of the SOD-57 transponder. I think it is used to set up IFF channels. However, IFF is not properly simulated in any DCS product, so it won't make a change on whatever you set on it.
How to use the radar/IRST tilt? I mean, I can set the radar in different modes but I like to tilt that dot in the radar by myself. Like you are doing at 13:50
+PowerBoy Well, to start off, the MiG-21 doesn't have an IRST (Infra Red Search and Track) device, as it wasn't available back then. The MiG-21's radar is not slewable, meaning you can't move it left/right and up/down. However, it is self leveling and will keep scanning horizontally (up to a pitch angle of 30°). If you want to lock a target that is not directly infront of you, you have to manuver the aircraft to get the target right infront of you. The only thing you can adjust is the radar range gate or also called TDC on new aircraft (two horizontal yellow bars). If you have two targets directly in front of you, one at 10km and one at 15km, you can slew that gate on the target you want to lock, and it will pick the one inside the gate. Hope that answers your question!
@tvercetti1 last time I fixed a radar I didn't sort through any lines of code. In a mig 21 with an old radar you'd be messing with wave guides, pcbs, checking old fashioned electrical connections. On a new radar you'd remove the dish which also has the computer connected to it and put a new one on in like ten minutes. The old shit sucks.
Ughhh still not "happy" with it... 14:18 - guy descends to keep the lock on target (like the target aircraft is lower) but radar tells the target is higher (inverted "T" sign). Normal "T" tells the target is lower... Real mistery is when flying over ground, like no higher than 1km, so the ground reflections are visible. Now - what happens when the plane you fly enters 45 degrees turn? The clutter on the radar remain flat... Does the radar have any kind of gyroscopic compensation system to overcome plane bank???
Regarding the mistery: The radar is stabilized between +-70 degrees in roll and +8/-25 degrees in pitch. The ground clutter should only start to change once you leave those roll or pitch angles.
@@xxJohnxx77 Thanks! That's interesting. I already managed to dig that RP-21 dish is in fact, ground stabilized. No numbers (degrees) information included, though. It can be assumed RP-22 and further got that feature too. Definitely worth of testing out...
+An Lq Yes, however it is more difficult because of ground clutter. I recommend using the ground declutter switch in the second position (causing the radarbeam to rise by 1.5 degrees).
+xxJohnxx I did some tries but came with no luck. I set a mission MiG21 (1000ft) vs Hawk/M2000c (5000ft), I was using declutter 2nd position but still could get a lock on anything until raising target altitude above 6000ft. Of course I pointed radar nose to the right direction.
Just because you can't fly properly everybody else should also not get the opportunity to fight F15s or Su-27s (btw, it's a Su, not an SU!)?! What's wrong with people like you? Stop whining and learn to fly! Full stop. This is an example how a MiG-21bis pilot can easily ground both F-15s and Su-27s. If you can't, practise, or play something else: ua-cam.com/video/9ZVqo6Kv3g4/v-deo.html

It's just practice. You can also use SAU Stabilize or go to options > axis assign > pitch/roll/trim > axis tune > increase curvature to ~25%

Hi, Nice vid! Very realistic. What do you use for camera movement? TrackIR?
J Pz Thanks for the feedback! Yes, that is TrackIR.
You can also lock targets with the pipper using the "air to ground" mode.
Thanks for the information. I didn't know that!
Thanks, very helpful! Surprisingly quite a capable radar , with all those filters, for it's time.

Good day, I wonder if with the target locked can use to identify the same with IFF interrogating button ?
Hello. No, unfortunatly once you have locked the target you loose the functionality to IFF the target.
