RS-2 (AA-1 Alkali in NATO speak) was mainly for bomber intercept; beam riding being too hard to use in fighter-fighter combat. The R-3 missile (AA-2 Atoll) is literally a reverse engineered Sidewinder - a Taiwanese example got lodged in a Chinese MiG-17 without exploding during the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis of 1958 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Taiwan_Strait_Crisis), then passed over to the USSR. These were the missiles used over Vietnam. The R-13 is an upgraded version. R-60 (AA-8 Aphid) is a 1970s missile.
There is also the story that AIM9 was litteraly smugled from West Germany supply depo. I always found strange that guidance front part was intact after collision so Soviets could reverse engineer it.
I've now started taking 2 R13M1 missles and 2 R60m missle. (I don't use the double rack unless I'm bringing wing tanks for a long patrol with 4 R60ms otherwise it's to much wieght and drag) The R13M1 I use for sneak attacks since it has the much bigger warhead (7.4kg) R60m for head on attacks and dogfights but always fire 1 then follow it with a second since the single 3kg warhead just tickles your opponents (I need 2-3 to take down a Harrier most times) Important tip: due to needing to hold down the weapon release button for almost 2 seconds before the missle leaves the rails I pre-hold down the weapon release. button before I have tone with the R60m the missle will still fire after 2 seconds but it means it will hit a target comming head on with you. R3R missles is sadly not useful since radar has no look down shot down, can't find planes flying lower then 1k and has poor preformance
Never had problems killing anything except f14s and 15s with the 60m. The drag is way to intense to me with double racks. I usually bring wing tanks and 2 r60ms because I love afterburner.
so, we only have 1 usable radar missile, the R3R. It is SARH, which means we can break the lock and it will still go for the target and our only usable IR missiles are the R13M1 and the R60m, use R13M1 for longer range and R60m for dogfight. Only reason to use R3R is that you can fire it at all aspects since it's radar guided. The R13M1 and R60m are rear aspect, and to some angle can lock from the front, but not directly.
@@Stahlwollvieh I can confirm this. Personally, unless I'm intercepting High flying bombers or attack aircraft I don't bother much with radar guided missiles in this bird. Radar off, low and fast is the best strategy
@@clubtcb Well... they have some advantages. First of all they're all aspect of course, which makes them very useful on Alpenwolf's Cold War server for example where R60Ms are disabled. Also in bad weather/low visibility conditions it can be very nice to use them. But yeah, I used to run my MiG-21 nose cold all the time as well for a long time.
Hello! I tried to share my screen with my friend, but he did not hear my desktop audio, so he did not hear the sound of the MiG-21. How could I solve this?

easy way to explain the r3r and r3s is, the r3s is basically an im9b and the r3r is a radar guided aim9b

Negative, SARH missiles cannot pursue their target after a lock has been broken. That would be a Fox 3 (or active radar homing, ARH) missile.

The R-55s are actually pretty good, mostly due to their massive warhead. However they are not dogfighting weapons by any means.
Please do a series like this on the f14 when it comes out!!!!
I needed this. Thanks!
Dude. Loving that the Fishbed is getting this kind of attention, awesome jet. Keep it up!
