Color me very impressed with Shotgun's fighting style. You can tell the man REALLY studies his planes and learns how to get as much as he can out of them, as well as being a very wily and savvy pilot. This video was a brilliant showcase of both of you guys' flying abilities and mastery of your jets.
@@most_sane_piano_enthusiast Yeah, early missiles often didn't pull as well, had weaker tracking (especially in regards to side and front aspect), less range, and were easier to flare away which is why they had lackluster hit-rates.
That first dogfight with Shotgun... the guy pulled some impressive maneuvers with the Fishbed. Excellent. He may be your best opponent so far (no disrespect to Toxic!).
@@DDayJayke Not true at all. The missile-only F-4 doctrine was famously such a failure that it was directly responsible for the creation of TOP GUN to retrain desperately needed dogfighting skills back into US military aviators...

@@jesuschrist-alphaomega PHI Air Medical? That's awesome. I really wish I would have gone into basically anything aviation. I got into restaurant and retail management young and just never got out. :(
Ooh that performance in round one was slick! As a Mig-21 enjoyer, I love seeing someone use the go-fast-bait into the brake-check-razzle-dazzle. (That’s the technical term for that manoeuvre.)
I once heared or was reading a report where they described how the americans got their Hands on a Fishbed and learned how to fight it. There was mentioned, that you shouldn't come too near to the back of the MIG 21 for a Guns solution or something like that, because if the Pilot is smart, he slows down quick and extend its Flaps. So the Fishbed will just float over your head and ends on your six. I wonder if this is exactly what Shotgun has done in the first round?
@GrowlingSidewinder You’ve done dogfights like “Raptor vs itself” (or, put differently, “Raptor vs Raptor”) before. What about extending that concept to other aircraft (i.e. F-15C/E/EX, F-16C, F-18C/E, F-14A/B/D, MiG-29, Su-27, …) in an “aircraft vs itself” mini-series?
When i was about 8 i was gathering some cows in Prescott and an f 4 came across low from north to south. I was on a rise and he flew across in front of me about 100 fett away and i could see him in yhe cockpit. Loud as hell and fast. Vietnam was in full swing. Coolest thing i ever saw. Always wondered who he was.
Nice fight. You have got some high quality opponents. This one seemed very willing to push every possible envelope and try different things to see what worked.
The Phantom is a really beautiful plane imo. Everything I've heard about said it was ridiculously fast in a straight line, had some very hard acceleration, and was pretty lousy in the turns.
I double tap with those Mig-21 missiles, their warheads are so small that a significant number of claimed Mig-21 kills just limped back to base historically.
@@GM-fh5jp I’ve never heard that before. I wonder who he really was. I’ve always wondered who “Duke” Cunningham and “Irish” Driscoll really fought against on May 10, 1972. Was it really “Car?”
I remember meeting a F-4 pilot while I was serving in the USAF. He was a LtCol in a different role in his Air Force career. But he told me it flew like a boat. LOL!
The Fishbed is no slouch, i love both these planes so much. Had some success with pulling the Fishbed into a scissors. The Phantom rolls pretty well...
Love the offset 2 circle attempt from shotgun. I think his last ditch before your fox 2s hit would have been to ditch the 2 circle into the sun and hope to slow down into an overshoot.
The US Navy did not have any F-4E version is its inventory in those days but only the F-4B or F-4J versions. You show show the real thing (F-4J with the gun pods).
because the F4 can just go vertical against the 17 and the 19 has worse missiles and performance than the 21. he wanted to make the fight even. although admittedly he got so slow in the first fight they could of killed him easily
In that first engagement what do you think you could have done differently to change the result? If you had dumped earlier and not pulled out of burner when he got slow do you think that could have worked? I'm intrigued if there is a counter at the point? Or if because you are slow and in a one circle you are already screwed?
I'd like to see the F-4E revisited with a modernization program. Upgrade to modern engines, avionics, radar, capable with the AIM-9X, AIM-120D, and the new AIM-152

Double tapping the Atolls(?). Heard an Air Force pilot say they liked to ripple fire Sparrows because they're called missiles not hitiles.

It was actually Soviet doctrine to fire two fox-2's at once, wonder if he researched that
He flew great… big mig skills
@@paint4r I can't find any info on this. What was the reasoning behind it? The fact that early IR missiles were quite unreliable?

Not sure why but your content has felt a lot fresher recently, I dig it.
That is a hell of a good Mig 21 pilot. That thing is a pain.
There was an experimental version of the MiG-21 called the "Analog". It was a pure delta wing they used to test the wing planforn for the Tu-144.
Shotgun's dual missile attack was hilarious, and the maneuver that set it up was pretty sweet!

Dual missile launch? Last time I saw that was in an arcade videogame from 2010 😂
Switch the gun from AUTO-CLEAR to NOT-CLEAR so you don’t have the deadly and the round stays in the chamber.

Why don’t we see a MiG 17 or 19 vs the F4? Those were more frequent in Vietnam.
The Mig 21 had an impressive showing in Vietnam, many Vietnamese aces scored kills with it (yes, against Phantoms too!)
