Rick, Peter, and Barrie, I just came across this video. After four years and two spine surgeries from my initial injury, I became pain free about four months ago. I have been back in the gym trying to get stronger and back into shape. My flexibility has not been great. These exercises hit some spots I was not able to loosen with other stretches. Most awesome. I feel better already!
Wow, what a distance and swing speed pick up. About 8 years ago when I hit 60 years of age I started working out with exercise bands and golf specific moves 10-15 minutes before I leave for the golf course, ( 5 minute or less drive time ) from my home. I have always felt it helped me, this just really proves what I thought all along. I know my reply to this video is five years after it was made, but it really applies as much now as ever before.
Stretching is so important. I always feel better when I stretch before going to the range or the course. I definitely will try out some of these stretches as a few were new to me. Great stuff.
Hi Guys, I used the same exercises today before a competition. I have a handicap of 14 and am forever just walking onto the golf course here in France. The exercises warmed me up in the right places. It was not about adding distance, it was about getting my body into a good position to play. It worked incredibly well. From the first tee i was ready to play, and finished 2nd in the premier series (that is the french way) and hit some really good shots all day. Awesome thanks to you guys for posting this, and also to Peter Finch for his 20 minute warm up which i also used ( i will post on his in a minute). Great work, keep it coming.
Its been more than a year and Im swinging it above 120mph! Thanks for this awesome video!!! Stretching, weights, fitness, I did all these things and I achieved my primary goal. 130mph seems too much for me :)
I played soccer (football) at a private academy, we had a doctor for our team trainer, he had us do a 10 min warm-up then our streaching and then a heavy workout which lasted about 45 minuets. I would suspect to do even better a workout should look something like this: 10 min warm-ups, lite jog or bicycle, then simulate few driver swings at half power 10-35 min stretch period, this includes the foam roller (foam roller takes about 25min to do) simulate a few more driver swings at 2/3 power spend about 20-40 min on pliometrics and resistance training Hit the range and do full swings and work up to full power, hit 300 golf balls 9-iron, 7-iron, 4-iron, 2-iron, 3 wood, driver, hit all the wedges then go to the chipping and putting range Play a round of golf or simulate a round of golf on the driving range At this point you could go do a strength and conditioning program, don't swing the club after you've lifted weights you'll damage your muscle tissue RECOVER
Unreal.... Thankyou. Loving your videos ....you have a real gift. Is there a PDFs of these exercise available, to carry in my bag . That could be very helpful. Slainte Patrick H
Fantastic video, guys, as always! Just goes to emphasize the importance of pre-game stretching / warm-ups etc. Dos it suggest Rick is naturally well-strecthed (his improvement was less dramatic than Pete's) while Pete needs to do more Yoga?
Great video! QUESTION: What is recommended for maintaining this extra flexibility (and distance) through the round? That is, he talked a bit about how long the stretch will last. While simply playing will keep us relatively loose, can we prolong the benefits more by doing certain stretches during and throughout the round? I'd love to see a prescription for "during the round" stretching from Barrie. Not sure what would be most beneficial without being too much. Thanks!
Hi when I said the stretch only lasts for a certain time that's mainly if your sat down or immobile for longer than the recommended 20-30 mins by keeping moving after the stretch by walking and hitting shots you should be fine for the duration of the round
Very interesting & enlightening!...Big Baz has amazing flexibility!...Pete especially & Rick, not so much! ha ha This really illustrates the need for strength training and flexibility in the golf swing...thanks guys keep 'em coming! Question for Big Baz, do you happen to work with anyone with 2 artificial hips? I have had both hips replaced and I'm curious as to stretches you might use for someone with hip replacements...thanks
I have a client who has 1 hip replacement I taylor the stretches to them so certain stretches we tread with caution but it doesn't stop us from stretching most of the ones on this video can be done but just listen to your body in certain positions and don't push the stretch too much
Warming up is the way to improve your distance off the tee initially, as compared to hitting cold. It only makes sense. As you continue to play from a cold start, your distance will improve as you go and loosen up. Not rocket science. I think hitting a bucket of balls prior to playing does the same thing.....
Rick i like your video's, and i don't wish to sound cynical, but i do think that some them are just a little OTT. I mean i've seen loads of your videos where you consistently swing at 110-112 (G30, SLDR come to mind), so clearly your swing speed in the video is exactly the same. What would have been better is a before and after for example where rather trying to show a quick fix, maybe the video could have highlighted a 3-4 month program of golf specific strength training and then shown the results after.
why use one measure device for the first test then use a (known to be +10%) device for test 2. its misleading nonsense . and the GC2 stated a dispersion of 6.5 for Ricks set of drives . if you add the error up it averages to over 23 yards off target. no fairways are that wide (56 yards) the stretches are well worth a try for golf and overall flexibility however.
I like to rub the shaft up and down my back for a nice tingling massage. It's relaxing...don't know if you'll drive the ball any more distance. You might get relaxed and make more putts.

Great video.. will keep this saved for my new pre-match warm up. Pete looked liked he was struggling though during the stretch montage! Camon Pete!!!
Struggled is a polite way of looking at it :)
When you guys started stretching, I couldn't help but crack up! LOL

Great video. A must in my pre round routine
Very useful tip, thanks Rick
Pete's swing is a thing of beauty
I agree.
Thanks for sharing, these are great stretches
The music was a hilarious touch!
ha thanks
Wow! Pete's swing speed has increased a lot over the years!

Awesome advice and tips thanks for this one especially.
Many thanks and please let us know how you get on.

Pretty incredible.

Thanks Barrie.
You guys are hilarious !!
Gotta try this
I'm sold! is there a condensed version of stretches that I can use just before the first tee, something I can do while on deck?
Haha! Brilliant guys!

extremescuk Fantastic! Thanks for the clarification. I'd hate to lose my new mojo a few holes in. : ) Now to get that stretching routine down. Thanks!
lol " Its kinda hard to fine tune a Rolls Royce"! Good stuff.
Wow!
That's all I can say.
Interesting. I want to see Big Baz hit 5 shots too! :-)
Oh trust me you don't!!
Look out for me soon on one of ricks course vlogs
And keep watching
Thanks for your comments
It's been just over a year since this video. Did you keep training with Barry and achieve 300 yards carry?
Does this guy have any tricks for hitting the ball 20 yards closer to target? ha
So you wouldent feel any long-term results if you do these exercises? It only lasts 30mins?
For longer term improvement stretches should be held for around 30 seconds twice daily

Thanks everyone keep the comments and questions coming the more you watch the more videos we will do
can't do many of these stretches, as I had shoulder surgery and was diagnosed with sever arthritis in my right shoulder. now what?
I don't' believe in that voodoo stuff, my mind is shot......

Could you imagine Ben Hogan doing these? Ya, I can't either!

114 people just started stretching. :D
hahaha. Did you?
RickShielsPGAGolf I did actually!! :D
I just realised your name is rick shiels and not shields
does it bother anyone else that this should say farther not further?
Because the distance is measured?
+Jacob Anderson farther is in relation to distance, further is figurative distance
measurable vs non measurable
Daniel Yuzva yep was just checking that's what you meant

Rick seems to put more effort into it.
Printable PDF of stretches below, thanks for such a great video.

This is really odd, Rick seems more switched on in this video than his others
