    Hi Rick, I've been learning a lot from your videos. Previous to this one, I watched your 5 tips for fixing a slice and was able to correct the slice I've had my whole life (I'm in my 50's!). So, thanks for that! You asked in this video which shot I found most daunting. Definitely #3 - the high lofted chip. I've never used my sand wedge except for in a sand trap so that is new to me. I'm going to go out and practice and see how things go. I will probably purchase a lob wedge on your advice. Thanks! I love your easy manner and the fact that you are not arrogant at all (the way many golf pros are in their videos, ugh!). I'm a big fan and love your videos and recommend them to all my friends and anyone I'm paired with on the course if they seem interested. I appriate the work that you do very much! Thank you!

    If anyone is in doubt about this video it's proper helped me so much. I started doing shot 1 about 5 months ago and it really does work. Didn't take massive amount of practice, it just worked straight away for me. Its got to the point where I now have so much more confidence around the green now. This is such great tip for mid to high handicapper.
    I've been doing lot of work on my game with Pro at my club but not needed to do much with him on my short game. I can get up and down so much more since I 1st saw this video. My favourite thing I now do is tapping in with my iron after I've got really close.

    A putter usually has a 2 to 8 degree loft, use it. you can skip over dodgy grass and get rolling and never worry about 'fat' or 'thin' shots. Most of my off the green shots are closer than a wedge. Just a thought. Have fun, friends.

    I gotta admit, since getting the stronger lofted clubs I struggled with the bump and runs. As you say, I've had to drop to an 8i for the standard type. It's just a psychological thing at first, getting it into your head that the 8i is a 7i etc. If anything it confused me more with wedge gapping.

      Helps me too...i think the kiss of death in chipping is fear of hitting it too far. Once you start to get tentative those fats and thins kick in. Helps me to use that higher lofted club where i feel like I have to give it some grunt to get it to the hole. Makes for a much more confident stroke. 👍

    • @garybrumley3519
      @garybrumley3519 6 років тому

      I agree, Rob. I hate that club lofts have gotten so strong. I have actually ordered clubs with 1-2 degrees weaker lofts just to keep the game more consistent for me. I saw a PW listed at 43 degrees recently. Seriously? That would make your gap wedge about the loft of a PW from years past. It does seem that 'players clubs' have lofts that are more traditional.

For some reason I kept going to my 53 degree wedge and stuffing it up. This has helped make my approach and club decision easier, thanks.

  • @khure711

    Phil Michelson chipping advice is the best. 3 steps, 1 ball placement either in front of left foot (lofted) or right foot (de lofted) never between feet. 2 All weight on left foot (always). 3 Quick hitch in back swing, Fast hands through the ball, and club should be straight with left arm through finish.

      thats exactly what I do and I have been converting 3/4 birdies on short holes this year at my club championship from within 40 yards using his advice getting them to nearly tap in range. Even lob shots are not that hard when you follow his guide

    • @Geep1778
      @Geep1778 6 років тому

      Michelson is a great player but i can't use his method because I struggle to maintain my balance w all my weight on front foot. I have bad flat feet and need both to touch ground... I hit most chips/pitches ball center or slightly back like this video demonstrates. Just because a pro does something doesn't mean there's only that way to be a good player.. That's why experimenting w many ways is the key to getting better and finding what works for you.

    Thankyou Mr Rick Shiels!...I love golf but also love being okay at it!...Not sure what an average golfer is,but up until 6 months ago I was forever scoring 110-125 constantly,(...and swearing alot!)...So I had a local(expensive) golf lesson,but still the same old,same old...I then stumbled across Rick's UA-cam channel and slowly but surely I began piecing bits together...I like the way he is easy to understand and so enthusiastic and particularly his reminders to enjoy our golf,I actually feel like he is a friend!!...So these days I am consistently shooting under 100 and more often than not,under 90...However,I still want to keep improving my game fo have subscribed to Rick's channel safe in the knowledge that it will continue to help my game🌞🌞...and for as long as I am on this planet I will NOT be telling my playing partners about Rick's UA-cam channel!!😀😀...but everyone else,it is a must and it works👍

    Great video which demonstrate you do need the proper equipment which includes a 56 and 60 degree wedge in your bag. I carry a 52 degree wedge also for shots that can be hit without a trap interfering. One other short game shot that is beneficial is the use of a hybrid when near the green but in long grass. A putting stroke with this club can pop the ball out and get it running very well.

    Rick, I absolutely LOVE when you do videos like this. I love equipment reviews too of course but I watch all of your golf game help and tip videos and they have LITERALLY taken strokes off my game. Thank you for the great stuff!!! P.S. Driver vs Driver episode 1 was great. Can’t wait for the rest of the season 👍

    worked well yesterday...thanks Rick...its cool here in Canada playing in the fall.Was wondering if you could do a challenge when you have time...a cold golfball vs a warm or hot golfball...is there a difference between the two....with driver and say 7 irion

    I typically have used a 5i where you used an 8 and a 7i if it’s off about 10’. You made a good point about the change over the years in lofts. I might go down a club and see how it goes.

    Hey Rick, great Video's. My second year of golfing and the detail you provide in your video's has been outstanding in helping me improve. I have gained 30 yards on my drive from watching your full set of video's on the proper drive technique. Question, in this video you say to open the face of the 56% wedge to get more loft. Is there a reason a fella wouldn't just use a 60% wedge if they are that close to the green and need more loft? Cheers

    A wonderful set of three tips. I appreciate your suggestion to use my 8 iron for the short bump and run, my sand wedge for a more lofted farther out shot, and my lob wedge for the high short shot over a hazard.

      you could alsoo use 56 deg. ball at back foot and delft your club and putter stroke the ball

  • @andywrench6754

    definitely shot 3 as I always seem to catch the ball with the bottom edge of the club and send it flying! Also the lie of the ball is important as if its sitting up nicely you can easily get the club head under it...have often skied it as a result of that too.

    The shot with the #8 help me to realized how to do it correctly. Even though I have been using the 8 to take that type of shot I have been trying to chip the ball instead of doing what you showed us. Thanks

    Great vid Rick
    Have started using Cobra one length hybrid for bump and runs, love it for seven iron length shaft.
    Biggest shot problem for me is the high shot.
    Using the 60 degree either over it or thin it totally.
    Guess more practice needed.
    Thanks for the tips.

    My Cobra 61 degree trusty rusty is a dab hand at shot three, its old but i am so used to hitting it i can feel confident on a downhill lob. That said I now and again blade it through the green and into the next postal area!

    thanks Rick. Very concise. I think the lofted chip off the tight lie, gives me the most stress. Lob over the bunker to me is not as stressful. I expect it to roll out. If I hit it right. The shot usually finish 8’

    I"m great with the lob shot and the 56 degree because I practice them a lot! The one I'm weakest with is the 8 iron bump and run, it is so hard for me to judge the power to hit it. It always feels like it jumps off the face more than I'm expecting and I can go way long. Guess I need more practice with that one. Nice video.
