  • This is a really small job I did recently, and thought I'd use it as an opportunity to show some of the equipment I use and how I haul, access, and use it. Enjoy!

    It’s kinda crazy but when your not working on your spare time u can take a little sand paper and just knock the rough off on the wheels and take some primer and paint on it and then that back red part it wouldn’t take no time to shoot it. I’m just saying it does make a lot of difference walking out of the house to go to work and see a nice rig. It makes a big difference to the costumer too. I learned this when I worked for a country club and some of their equipment was 30 years old but looked new

      Kurt Sweetser Thanks! The great thing about that platform is that you can put anything up there that fits, and isn’t too heavy. I wouldn’t put the roller up there, but I have carried my blue grapple bucket there, which weighs about the same amount as the soil conditioner. Good luck!

    Looks fantastic!! Love the rig/ trailer. implements. Quite expensive. To start out with a business like this would be a mortgage payment. Inheriting or slowly acquiring machines and implements would be another approach. New with 80k truck, 80k loader, and multiple implements in the 10 to 15k range including the trailer that's a couple hundred thousand dollars sitting there. Even used if lucky to find items at half price 100k min.

      Nobody could afford to start from scratch like that in order to do small jobs like this one. I got the truck and bobcat with buckets for free. Spent around 5k on the trailer and 16k on the two big attachments. And a little bit on the pallet fork. That was hard enough. Buying a new truck or a new Bobcat was not even a remote possibility at that time. Slowly acquiring is the way to go.

    Compacting loose top gravel doesn't do much for it, does it? It the gravel doesn't have anything to pack into, it just stays loose.

    • @MerrittSkidSteerServices
      @MerrittSkidSteerServices  3 роки тому

      Generally that is true, though it is still better to pack than not if you can. It is more about the moisture than anything else. The more moisture there is in the material, the more good it does you. I raked and compacted the steepest driveway I've ever seen while it was raining, and it held like a champ through some nasty rains for a really long time.

    Ive never seen it used on any thing but dirt or clay to prep soil.

    • @MerrittSkidSteerServices
      @MerrittSkidSteerServices  3 роки тому +3

      Hi Wayne. The soil conditioner breaks up all the fine material in the hard pack and redistributes it evenly, same as it does in soil. You’re not just filling the ruts, you’re actually removing the ruts altogether. Fix the underlying drainage problem while you’re at it, and you end up with a pretty durable, long-lasting surface. Thanks!

  • @kevinhennessy6193

    Are there 3 hydraulic hoses on the roller? I only have two hookups! Pls explain. Thanks

    • @MerrittSkidSteerServices
      @MerrittSkidSteerServices  3 роки тому

      The third hookup is the case drain. In attachments that produce a lot of pressure, a case drain is included to prevent excessive hydraulic pressure from damaging the attachment. It is a line that dumps excess hydraulic fluid back into the reservoir. I had to get this case drain installed on the Bobcat when I bought the roller. I think most new loaders come with it already installed.
      Thanks!

  • @TylerBemis

    Hey Merritt do you find the front mounted wing kit on the QA rake helps alot? I picked up a used rake and it doesnt have them considering adding them.

    • @MerrittSkidSteerServices
      @MerrittSkidSteerServices  4 роки тому

      Hi Tyler. Yes, the wing kit is pretty important, especially if you’re a little bit of a perfectionist. The wings keep it from windrowing, and they really do simulate a box blade. I wish they were a little easier to take on and off, because you’ll need to remove at least one of them if you angle the rake, as the one on the leading edge will push material sideways that you don’t want pushed.
      You can see it in the video link below in the first few minutes. There I have a wing on the left side but not the right. The right side is leaving a little ridge because the material rolls out, and the left side pushes the excess material forward. I definitely prefer it with the wings on. Good luck!

      @@MerrittSkidSteerServices thanks for the info! That was exactly what I was thinking when your fully angled. Do you decide before you start a job which side you'll keep it on? I had pretty good success fully angling windrowing material without them on larger projects.

      @MerrittSkidSteerServices  4 роки тому

      Tyler Bemis If your goal is to windrow, which it will be sometimes, then it will be fine without the wings. I’m more often trying to create a clean edge, so I usually have them on.

    I have a similar set up. How deep are you going with the power rake? I'm probably too deep I think with mine.

    • @MerrittSkidSteerServices
      @MerrittSkidSteerServices  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Lyle. How deep you rake depends on a few things. It is only designed to go a few inches down at a time, so it is hard to accidentally overdo it. The biggest factor is how much base material there is. If I know (or find out) that the gravel base is nice and deep, I go ahead and rake it pretty deep, because it is that underlying base material that makes this process work the best.
      Now, if the gravel base is really thin, you've got to be more careful because it usually isn't helpful to dig up the bigger rocks in the subsoil. Sometimes I'll see it kicking out ballast, river rocks, or whatever other material is under the gravel, and I'd rather avoid that stuff if I can. If the base is really shallow, I usually recommend that they get a few more inches on top. This process (as a standalone process) works best on some of these old driveways where people have done nothing but dump a new load of gravel every three years for the past 30 years, and the base is nice and deep.
      Good luck!

      Lyle Casteel Definitely a must have. I take one of them off if I angle it (the front one), or both of them off if I’m using it to cut a swale or low ditch from the side, but otherwise I leave them on all the time. 👍

    The truck is 9900 gvw and your trailer axles are 6 lug. Are the axles 5,000 each for a gvw of 15,000?

    • @MerrittSkidSteerServices
      @MerrittSkidSteerServices  5 років тому +2

      TERRORoftheLORD - Close. 5200 each for a gwv of 15,600. They are actually 6000 lb axles outfitted with 5200 lb brakes, which allowed us to use the smaller wheels, which brought the deck closer to the ground. My trailer guy, who is super good at this, went out of his way to make sure I could haul all my stuff safely with my current truck. If I had had a dually, he wouldn’t have worried about it so much. Since I don’t, he designed...this.

    • @TERRORoftheLORD
      @TERRORoftheLORD 5 років тому +1

      @@MerrittSkidSteerServices The gvw on a dually will push you into cdl. Not sure on Fords but Chevy is 12,000, and Dodge has even their single wheel 3500's at 13,200. Or is that not a problem because you already have a cdl?
      It's a balancing act for me. A big enough trailer to haul 12,000 lbs of gear and still keep the truck and trailer below 26,000.

    • @MerrittSkidSteerServices
      @MerrittSkidSteerServices  5 років тому +1

      TERRORoftheLORD - Definitely a balancing act. All this past week I have been hauling around a Bobcat 770 with a forestry mulcher with this truck and trailer. I’m still within specs and my registration level (25.5k), but if I want to do it much more, I’m definitely looking at more truck and trailer, which means getting a CDL. I think I’m going to go ahead and get it, then I can stop worrying so much about the weight.

    • @MerrittSkidSteerServices
      @MerrittSkidSteerServices  5 років тому +1

      TERRORoftheLORD - I don’t know what the Ford dually numbers are either, but my trailer guy said that the gwv on the older Ford dually trucks (ones the same age as my truck) aren’t much higher than what I have, so that would be one way to go. Allegedly, the gvr’s on the newer Ford duallies went significantly higher.

    • @MerrittSkidSteerServices
      @MerrittSkidSteerServices  5 років тому +1

      TERRORoftheLORD - You didn’t mention what truck you have. This trailer (including the removable platform) has an empty weight of 3500 lbs, which officially gives it 12,100 lbs of payload. Then figure 10% of the weight will be on the truck if you load it properly.
