    I had no experience with building a road when I bought my property and built my house on it. It was swampy loamy soil. I got it leveled and then dumped tons and tons of 3 1/2 minus down. After a couple of years and a few more layers worked in the base was stable and we didn't sink into the ground. Topped with road gravel it's now very smooth and level and never muddy. I use a rake on my M5 Kubota for maintenance. I enjoyed watching you have fun!

    • @johnnysouza5601

      You're right. Sometimes the only way to tell when it first goes out is to have it running and get out and look at it. With a skid steer I wouldn't do that by myself since the only way out is right over the top of it. So if you're on a job site by yourself it can be tricky or almost impossible. I've worked in agriculture for most of my life and I'm very familiar with those bearings. If an employee isn't greasing them like they're supposed to the dirt will start building up in there which will destroy them. Some implements it easy to tell when they go out just from sight and sound others you don't know until you tear it apart or when it causes more damage. Pretty cool they thought about that and didn't just do it the way everyone else does. Seems like they're truly keeping customers in mind.

    Hey Stanley I grew up the same way! Dirt. Poor son of a contractor. Most kids played with Tonka toys I grew up running dozers and other heavy equipment since eight years old . On most ranch roads once finished we rolled the roads with a 6 yard dump loaded. We found neumatic rubber tires compacted better than steel rollers . They were also faster than a conventional steel roller on long ranch roads! Thank you for the candid honesty and non- biast review of the machine! I see the potential for yard work . But I prefer a small dozer or motor grader for road finishing. Overall for that job the power rake did a good job on the job. Without bringing in additional larger equipment! Adding to the job cost! Great review!

    i graded my staynat driveway a couple weeks ago. had some galleys forming in the middle and sides of the road due to rain erosion. i tried to back drag with the bucket (i have a 1026R John Deere tractor) but it just wasn't cooperating, as a wheel woudl go into a rut and the bucket would scrape at a beard angle. so instead i opted for the dig, drop, and smooth operations, where i pushed the bucket into the road to dig it up, then set the dug up material at the top and then back drag it smooth. i woudl LOVE a power rake like you have though, but, it turned out great with plenty of compaction and bucket smoothing. i just Wish there was a way to dynamically tilt the bucket side to side to account for the crown one needs to make in the road. ahh, well, i can't dream at least. i try and re-grade one a year or so or as needed. i woudl prefer pavement, but got to solve the drainage issues first. haha. but, that's what one gets living in Vermont surrounded by mountains, and living on its slopes lol. that's why im building terraces. makes things that much easier lol...

    Crowning is something you do from the get go not just at the end. Water also helps keep the fines, which is mostly clay (your binder), from blowing away as dust. BTW, most drive in the middle of a road creating a two track which essentially makes a crown. This will aid in keeping a crown as long as you don’t kill it by cutting that middle hump down. Grade, with some water keeping your crown, then rolling with more water to compact. You need a water truck and a small grader with a roller attachment. Graders do wonderful work for making ditches to aid in drainage of a crowned road.

    • @Dirtmonkey
      @Dirtmonkey  3 роки тому

      On the gravel roads around here I have never seen that done. I know its the right way but not practical for many situations. It requires to many steps and takes to long to be efficient for the long stretches I have sen done. On those back water country roads they typically run over it with a road grader and thats its.

    • @larzakalazerath6655
      @larzakalazerath6655 2 роки тому

      @@Dirtmonkey That's because back country roads are done cheep and most have 4 wheel drive that run though the mud and bumps yelling "YE HA". lol David is completely right about crowning the road. I was wondering what part of the country this road is in that you graded flat. The side vegetation is also pretty think right up to the road. Even though it looked like there was some slope past the vegetation with out some type of gully on either side heavy rains will not run past all that vegetation fast enough. As David also said most drive down the middle on back roads. That road is going to rut out rather quickly if that ground gets too saturated. Depending what part of the country and the amount of rain fall you should have a 3 to 5 degree crown on the straits with 4 to 6 in. gully on both sides and 1 to 2 on a curve and double the depth of gully on the low side as it has to handle all the run off through the curves embankment. If the road is on a hill that creates a hole norther problem as you don't want run off going strait down your road as it will wash out the bottom of either side. If it moves to fast depending on length and slope it can carry off what ever the road surface is and will cut a gouge right down the road way. I'm sure every one that's ever been 4wheeling has seen this effect going down trails.
      Sorry about the lengthy post but my Civil Engineer side as opposed to my heavy equipment and learning the engineering of proper techniques of hardscaping side got a little carried away their. lol

After that, used a heavy roller and compacted it all back down. Looks like a park. My driveway i had to crown. Easy to do if you know what you're doing. Trick is, using a farm tractor for it all.

    Nice. I use our Harley Rake to do the same, then roll it with our water cart 9500lbs dually truck (same effect as using the bobcat bucket) We have very rocky country where we are in Aus so actually use the Rake to make gravel. Much cheaper than buying it.

      Yeah- the gravel is down there just mixed in with the subgrade.

    40 yrs of experience. Win row all materials to the center of the road. Cut the gravel to remove all ruts and holes. Spread the material from the center to the sides to build a slight crown. That way you have material to work with to shape the profile. Grading in sections is preferred as you can push material into low spots or cut high areas. I would invest in a roller attachment for the skid loader and roll first to find the soft areas then rake again to fine grade. Same principle is used running a moto grader to grade a dirt road.

    great video I enjoy seeing you test equipment and attachments. I cringe at some because being a heavy duty mechanic I see repairs coming from abuse. I certainly see a use for an attachment like that power rake. I’m guessing the tines till the top 1 1/2-2 inches allowing it to be smoothed and evened out. A steel drum roller on that would compact it nicely. That looked easy enough with no rocks to deal with. Out here in California the eastern Sierra mountains I don’t see that attachment being usable to fix up a road due to to much granite rock. But in the part of the country you reside in y’all have fewer rocky roads to deal with.

    I heard of a lot of people say a chain link fence works great , well it seems to work nice for sure. But if you really want to see something work great, try dragging around a steel cable blasting mat. Incredible. Sized accordingly to your pulling equipment of course.

    Nice job and great for proximity. If you did many of these road service jobs, a vibratory compactor for the skid steer really improves durability, especially is the road base has some moisture content.
    I give customers the option, as I need to rent a unit. I'd own one if I could keep it moving daily.
    Most folks will opt for compaction the second time around.

    Stan, you ever try a rake with a solid bar? I bought one just to get into a cheap rake. I definitely find that a solid bar roller or a spiked roller have there places. The solid bar does really good with driveways and anything you want to get the rocks out of. I think it combs the rock out better than a spiked but can’t chew up hard ground like a spiked tooth unit as well.

    Hey Stan. I just had a great three day no work weekend and it was fabulous. But today on the dairy we had 12 cows escape because someone(lucky it wasn’t me) forgot to lock a gate. My boss was pissed and the one who forgot to close the gate just stood there while me and the boss ran around trying to get the cows back in the barn. Needless to say I wish we could fire that kid but we don’t have enough workers to take up his half ass work. So I’m stuck working with him.
    End of rant. Lol. Also that gravel road got nothing on my mile long road from hell. How was your weekend?

    The only question I have is where would the water drain off , in certain areas its completely not drainage, I thought to take the bucket every 20ft n run it into the woods , Anyway that's what I would've done , GREAT JOB BOSS 👏👍

    Hello Stan, 4 in 1 bucket's are rare in Europe.. at least in the Netherlands. p.s. I do have one for my front loader but even I had to buy a prototype as they didn't go into production (not enough demand) I mainly use it to clear shrubs and convert manure heaps.
    Thanks for the nice video!
