    I just picked up the UAD plugin on sale (including coupon, it was $74). I thought it did admirably in your comparison. Thanks!

      Great! It's a good plugin. I used the actual unit on a gig last week, got a bit of footage which I'll try and post....it sounded really good....it's a big bit of gear to carry around though!!

    Hardware is amazing. Noise and all. In love taking the deficiency of things and using them as a feature. I learned that from Tom Morello he said he takes whatever he has, imperfections and all, and makes that the sound and gets creative with it. There's just an edgy feel like you can hear the physical circuitry and when it was getting pitchy, I loved that. but the UAD did an amazing Job emulating it.

    • @iamtjwalker
      @iamtjwalker  Рік тому

      It is the inconsistencies that give it that something special, I used it on a gig recently and there's some magic there that even a good emulator can't capture! Not the noise though.....that's just annoying!!

  • @elwrongo
    @elwrongo 2 роки тому +4

    That noise sounds like a transport sound (but could also be capacitor staring to spill its guts!). My 201 doesn't do it (thankfully). The NI one sounds a bit weak. UAD more of the target. Arturia have a nice one as do AudioThing and so do Cherry Audio that's very cheap too ($19!). Great video, thanks.

      Thanks for that, I didn't know if it was a problem with all units or just mine....I'll have to get mine checked out. It could be to do with the computer as I get interference at other times too under certain circumstances....more investigation required! I'll check out those plugins too. Thanks for watching!!

    Got one few days ago from Japan listed as junk for 600 euros. Works great, just had to clean the pots and free the VU meter needle as it was stuck. It was well worth it.

    One thing to consider is using the hardware and the plugin as a stereo pair. Much better then buying a second Roland unit.

  • @directed6924
    @directed6924 2 роки тому +3

    UAD sounds amazing! Very impressed!
    The thing with the plugin though is that it's band limited to 30Khz. Maybe that's the reason why it sounds a bit less open than the real unit.

      That might be why.....I didn't know that! Thank you!

    Hi Tom, nice playing mate don't sell the Roland Space Echo it sounds so much warmer and the tonal quality is superb compared to the pedal it kind of reminds of my analogue vintage Electro Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man that I bought back in 1980 for £127.00 and sold it for double the price on Ebay about 15yrs ago! Again that was prone to strange noises too but I used to get that nice Bill Frisell sound and I also had digital effects that gave me similar effects but not sure if I regret selling it or not now I think you will regret selling yours.. 🤔

    • @iamtjwalker
      @iamtjwalker  3 роки тому

      Hi Glenn....I'm not going to sell it......after I listened back, and after playing that last thing with it I decided I wouldn't! I wish I could get rid of the funny noise when it's connected to the computer though. I've been meaning to get an isolating unit anyway....should do the trick. I've used it on a few gigs.....sometimes the treble loss is too much actually.....in other situations I don't mind it so much. Hope you're keeping well......and thanks for watching the videos!!

    I know that noise you got there. And I HATED that noise for years. Got rid of it using something like the Behringer MicroHD HD400 or the Palmer PLI-02. i have no idea why this kind of thing (Trennübertrager, I‘m german) isn‘t built into every cable or is at least an option. A simple, simple circuit but it works wonders.

    • @iamtjwalker

      Thanks for that, I shall do some more research into this. I did try and isolate the signal in the way those boxes you've mentioned do.....but I don't think what I was using was doing it properly. I've been looking into getting a similar unit for live use.....some venues have something in them (probably lights) that create a lot of noise, particularly with single coil pickups. I would like to use the 201 for recording.....such a nice sound.

    UAD is more clear and better top end, hardware is warmer and noisier, for recording purposes I would choose the UAD, nice playing by the way and demo.

    Hey!
    Great vid!
    Quick question.
    How did you set up your amp? Is that a sim or a miced cab? If so how did you run the signal from the UAD Echo to the cab? Reamp box from the interface? Thanks!

    • @iamtjwalker
      @iamtjwalker  Рік тому

      Thank you for watching! It's an amp sim I'm pretty sure. I can't remember exactly which one as it was 2 years ago! I suspect it was either something from Guitar Rig (twang reverb or tweed) or one of my UAD amps, either the Friedman Buxom Betty, Fuchs ODS or the Tweed Champ!!

    • @doginconfusion
      @doginconfusion Рік тому

      @@iamtjwalker I see. Thanks for replying. I wonder if the amp sim part smoothens out any differences between the real and plugin echo unit. It would be interesting to see how would the echo plugin behave if lets say you were to run it out from a reamp box to a real miced amp.
      Cheers!

    Hi, Tom. I'm Geoff, Ray's neighbour. We've met at a Steyning gig some time ago. Re: Roland Tape echo, the unwanted noise sounds to me like a problem with the actual tape loop. Maybe someone has replaced it and the "new" tape has traces of some old music track which isn't being wiped by the Roland's erase head and it's bleeding over. Suggest switching off the tape motor to see if the noise stops. If it does, either get a new loop of tape or get the old one bulk erased. If you'd like to chat about the problem, Ray has got my number. Best regards, Geoff in Steyning

    • @iamtjwalker
      @iamtjwalker  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Geoff, Hope you're well! Thanks for that, I'll have to try turning off the tape motor. I bought the unit fully serviced with a decent quality brand new tape loop, but I have had it a while. I must spend some more time investigating as it would be great to use it for recording. I'll be in touch when I do!! Thanks

    When you have that noise like that, it might be that your input level is too high.

    • @iamtjwalker

      I'm pretty sure it did it whatever the volumes were set at....might be interference. This was a while ago....can't remember now! Must get it out again and experiment!
