One of my friends let me borrow his vintage Roland RE-201 Space Echo for over a year so before I gave it back, I wanted to compare it to the AudioThing Outer Space emulation as well as the UAD Galaxy Tape plugin to see which is the superior tape echo plugin.
Why these two? I knew that I wouldn’t want to give up the tape echo sound because it really is special and in my search for a software replacement, these two kept coming up over and over.
Hearing all three of them next to each other, they’re all a little different. And they’re all great overall. It’s tough to do a truly objective comparison because the hardware unit I was using is going to react differently than the units used to model the other two plugins.
That said, here are some general observations:
-The hardware generally gets the wildest distortion and modulation sounds when you push it hard into self oscillation. You also have the added advantage of being able to open the box and physically touch the tape while this happens for extra weirdness
-The UAD version distorted more heavily than the AudioThing, but in a “flatter” way. The AudioThing didn’t distort as easily unless you play with certain settings.
-The UAD reverb has more ‘springy’ smack than either the AudioThing or the Hardware unit I was using. It feels wetter.
- The AudioThing designers appeared to have taken more creative liberties. You have a ton more control over timing and the ability to automate just about any parameter you want.
Now finally, lets consider price and which one I liked the most
-A hardware space echo or the modern EchoFix Recreation is around $2000. And you have to deal with the headache and expense of maintaining it. You also can’t automate anything, but you do get a cool device to play with. If you’re really obsessed with the sound of overdriven, heavy modulated tape echo, I wasn’t really able to recreate the vibe in the box. The software sounds great, but its not the same sound.
-The AudioThing Tape Echo is $69. Especially considering how great it sounds, that’s incredible. I’m most likely going to purchase this one because despite not having the same vibe as the hardware, I have some other analog outboard gear I can use to juice up some of the sound if I want some of the “out of the box sound”
- The UAD plugin had some redeeming qualities, but overall I liked this one the least. I have other plugins that get the super springy reverb and its more expensive than the AudioThing with less automation at $199. You also need a UAD card or interface to run it, which might add an additional layer of expenses if you’re not already using UAD hardware.
i like how wild the programmers went with audiothing. thank u for the very thorough comparison, i loved this video
Glad it’s appreciated! On a bit of a hiatus from making videos but I want to get these going again soon
@@Bass_computer aww i just subscribed! thats okay though :) do things at your own pace
like all the comparison video i am seeing online about this it's that audiothing nailed the emulation you can also make it sound super vintage easily by using a short decay and dark type to sound like the old days when using the hardware
the audiothing is definitely a dope plugin! i don't know what "vintage" sounds like vs. modern. I just know that the hardware I was using felt different than the plugin, but they're both awesome.
@@Bass_computer yeah there isn't a single roland tape echo that sounds the same i mean in hardware term i had a friend who owned 4 unit and all four units sounded different, strange right !! hahahaha
@@aviatedviewssound4798 yes exactly! when you're dealing with hardware that's pushing 30-40 years old they develop their own quirks and weirdness
Great review, really good comparison! and your instrumental sounds very nice!! keep going well!
Appreciate that, thank you! Need to get my hands on more hardware. In general modern plugins are pretty amazing, but they have their own sound. Nothing wrong or right, it's just it's own thing
The IK Multimedia T-RackS 5 Space Delay is very good also (£90 at the moment). It has a great sound
Thank you for the recommendation! I just got the Arturia one and if I find significant differences I’ll update :)
Here’s a comparison of the space echo vs plugin vs pedals vs Echorec vs ep-3! Ultimate shootout yall!!!

Thanks
The cherry audio version is different again.
It’s funny how copying a bit of hardware leads to so many versions!
I have the cherry & the audio thing plugins! They each have use cases!
Wasn’t even aware of this one! So many out there and they are have a different vibe
@@Bass_computer I love the cherry audio one. It’s not like the others & probably not that faithful to the OG..
but when you put that on a guitar or a pluck! My goodness!!!!!
It’s $14 on plugin boutique! Cheap enough to buy & feel no remorse! Haha
I have the audio thing outer space as well.
This week both plugins about 35 bucks, and UAD is 'native' by now.
Didn’t know it’s native on UAD now! Thanks!
Audiothing for mine 😎👍🏼
Big fan of that plugin
Awesome review ❤❤❤
Thank you 🤗
In the battle, the Ik Space Delay it's a pretty wild version
sorry, what is Ik?
@@Bass_computer IK Multimedia
@@Bass_computer Yes, please compare the space delay with your space echo.
Im sorry but unfortunately I had to return the hardware space echo to its owner, I was just borrowing it for a while
I was testing the outer space, and I found that the oversampling is just for the delay section (input/output included) when you turn the preamp switch on, it will start to have aliasing problems :(
have you tried any alternatives? would be interested in taking a look
What are we going to do with this loop man!?
Gotta make a video for ads then start writing music with the family of sounds I'm building
doing too many things as usual over here 🤪
Thanks
