My Experience Assembling Pylex-brand Under-Deck Storage Drawers

  • The homeowners for whom I built the bi-level deck wanted under-deck storage, and we found these Pylex deck storage drawer kits. Since I found no videos on UA-cam about experiences putting these kits together I decided to post my own.
    This is in no way an official instructional video. Pylex provides both printed and video instructions with each kit. This is more of a review of the assembly process per those instructions. I point out directions that could have been made a little clearer, or have been placed in earlier in the instructions to avoid doubling the work later on.
    All in all I think the system is well engineered. All the hardware and fasteners are provided in the kit. The wood is purchased separately, but the instructions provide a materials list and a cut list to follow. Once the instructions are understood, assembly moves rapidly.
    I will say the screws and bolts occasionally snapped when using an impact driver, so perhaps use a high torque drill and pilot holes for the lag screws rather than driver, and a box or adjustable wrench to tighten the nuts on the carriage bolts.
    These drawers were made to custom sizes, therefore my build time was lengthened as I re-drafted the cut list. Had I followed the instructions exactly as printed, I do not doubt both boxes would have been built and installed in a day.
    These kits are a bit tricky to master, but the results can be stunningly beautiful and functional all at once.

    Nice job. Looks like a good system, and certainly good use of space.

      They certainly designed a good system. The thing I didn't mention in the video and perhaps I should ammend it appropriately, is each drawer kit is around $200 US. But there is good value in that price.

      DBaca Maker Sounds a fair price - lot of hardware, instructions etc. Certainly be a pain to fabricate it all

      I wish I had come up with the system. But now I have ideas, and that's just as important.

    Pylex should pay you for doing this video! I saw their product & website but with nothing else to go on, i kept looking. Now I'm strongly considering. Thank you for doing this great video!
    So the drawer is not water proof or critter proof?

      The website says there is a membrane for the drawer- is it like a like a liner of does it sit on top?
      I just shared the link to your video where they sell it on Amazon.

      Well, there is a vinyl water barrier, and yes it goes in between the deck and the drawer top, but being made of plywood, water (from dew, rain, or irrigation) would eventually cause rot. SO, exterior paint helps. The instructions DO say to put on a preservative on the drawer top. Plus the drawer is not a true piston fit and it has drain holes in the bottom. Therefore small critters like spiders can get in. AND Thank you for the link back! That's wonderful!

    You did a great job but I still think to much littler will collect on top of the drawer cover from stuff falling threw the deck cracks. I think if I do drawers I will attach them to the drawer so when you pull it out you can broom off the debri, retrieve your coins and keys and stuff kids will be bound to loose threw the cracks. Keep the spiders and webs is a constant battle at my place.

      This is a good idea but I can’t picture how the lid can move since the drawer hangs from it. Can you elaborate? Thanks!

    Very nice, thank you for doing this. I am curious how well they have held up, and how waterproof they have been? Thanks again

      From the checks I have made when the clients want to refresh the finishes on the deck, the drawers themselves are very weather resistant. No leakage into the drawers. If I were to do this again, however, I would not face the drawers with plywood. I'd make panels of solid redwood boards.

    Thanks for this! The website does not include approximate pricing. I understand it would be based on the dimensions and specifications. How much were the ones in this video?

      As I recall they bought each drawer kit for about $300 US a piece at the time. that didn't include the wood. only the hardware.

    Im curious how much you would charge (labor) for this?

    • @DBacaMaker
      @DBacaMaker  12 днів тому

      They were part of a much larger job that was for good friends of mine. Plus I was, am still am, not a pro builder. As such, I didn't charge them professional rates. However, considering not just my time, but operating costs and overhead, I don't think $1800 for labor would have been unreasonable

    Did you use 1/2 or 5/8 plywood?

    • @DBacaMaker
      @DBacaMaker  10 днів тому

      @@Mrdubomb Pylex itself recommended 1/2 inch or 12 -13 mm plywood.
