Recently we bought a new truck and I decided straight away I would build some drawers for the back. They came out great and will be perfect for keeping things organised, especially when camping. The drawer slides work very well and much cheaper than buying them, $230 a pair was the cheapest I could find for the size I needed. Hopefully I've shown enough here to help you build your own but if you need more info on this style of runner then you should find plenty with a search.
We are about to set off on a family road trip and I finished these just in time! The bad news is we're going for two and a half weeks so there won't be a new video for a while. I'll get straight back to it as soon as we get home! ;)

The first half of the ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

My husband made these way back in the 60's when he was starting out as an electrician. The last time he made them for his work trucks, he made the outer box with sheet metal. The drawers are still wood with locking metal fronts and track rollers. We have them in the mini van to store beach chairs and camping stuff. He's made me all kinds of stuff, a built in bed with under bed storage boxes.

Father built set for full size truck in 70s had sheet metal wrapped around them, resized for his toyota in 1980. Lasted until I sold the truck. built similar for out large work beds f350 etc...
Great build but I do not like how they are not removable, getting ready to build a set for my Lighting and currently planning on using bolts holding bed down to anchor in place because of the short 5'6" bed.

I’m so glad I stumbled upon your video. I used your design to build some very similar drawers for my truck, and I absolutely love them!

    What a beautiful job!
I thought for sure you'd make a rolling platform to go on top. I did this for my truck and it is very convenient to get equipment from the back.

I grew up in a family of carpenters so in the 1950's my Grandfather had a pickup with a home built camping deal in the back. Nothing fancy but it made those weekend fishing trips more enjoyable with a place to sleep and get in out of the weather.
Many things our Grandparents did in the middle of the last century were done out of necessity and convenience and created family memories we all treasure today. A dollar was a real dollar and many were not wealthy by any means. American ingenuity is a trait lost to today's social fools.

I like his idea on the sliding rails much better than store bought.
