On reflection I used to be one of those that resisted Steven Wilson's changes of direction but I finally get it now. He is taking his skill set and inspiration and his view of the world and putting it through a different filter to see what comes out. Of course that is the most basic definition of being a "progressive" musician. I wasn't as much of a fan of To The Bone as HCE but I like the sound of the new album and I think the whole concept and presentation of it illustrates the picture he is trying to paint. I'm looking forward to hearing it as a whole piece, as intended, on Friday. It's great that we have artists like SW.

I respect Steven for being authentic and knowing that this is a gift and that he is aware that he has the independence and the freedom to do that. not talking about his devotion to music and his talent. I love THE FUTURE BITES very much the moment I listened to it for the 7th time now. that is what a good album is to me, catching at first sound, wanting to go deeper into every song, repeat, listen, rewind, listen, let it grow inside. wanting to absorb and understand. doing it for the love of music! for any GOOD music. genre does not matter. I am a listener to nearly all genres, no pulled drawers, but I am a listener to good music, authentic musicians, feeling that they burn for their music. we all feel that fire in the belly, to bend over backwards to make sophisticated music. chapeau, Steven!

Really interesting. SW a clever and honest musician. Looking forward his new record and tour here in Barcelona. It doesn’t matter if it is not prog rock or even rock, i like his sound.
Been seeing a few SW interviews recently, this was a very good one. 35 years ago I was the epitome of someone that SW wouldnt engage with as I was a bit of a prg snob and woudl disregard anyhting not either Prog or Metal. However I then went through a few years where I didnt listen to any prog or metal - a sort of musical awakening or growing up I suppose and just listened to jazz of all things, however I came back to my first love but I also had gained an appreciation for a wide range of othe musics - I even started to listen to and appreciate musical theatre. SW can be assured that he made a classic album in the Raven.. and as such does he need to repeat that - probably not, maybe one day, however while I havent yet really got into TFB I'm sure that at some point it will click, and if it doesnt I can still appreciate that its a great sounding and well put together and played album. I'd also pick either Abba or RTF over the Lamb as I'm also not a huge Genesis fan, I do like some of their stuff but would never consider myself a massive fan I've come to better appreciate the likes of say Abacab over the likes of Foxtrot - I personally dont ever need to hear Suppers Ready ever again. And taking SW's point about recognising a good record against a second or third rate prog record because its prog, I've been guilty of that in the past and ahve a few in my collection that I never listen to, while I will happily stick on the couple of Tears for Fears albums that I decided to get on the back of SW having discussed how good they are when he did Hand Cannot Erase. Sowing the Seeds of Love is fantastic.
Knowing that mushrooms and olives are vile is one of the few things I have in common with SW. Another is hoping he tours this year. I've bought tickets for September!

I have several copies of "consequences", all well played, but also in Decent/Good Cover condition and plays perfectly as a record. I would be happy to send one to Steven if I knew how.
It's funny, but more often than not I concur with SW's tastes in music, right now especially Max Richter and ABBA The Album. I never really was into Genesis either. Pink Floyd, Radiohead, definitely. Industrial/pop/electronic/ambient music, a lot of that as well. Now I'm going to check out the other two neo-classical composers he mentioned, no clue about them!
O.K. It's mid-March 2022, a little over a year since this interview was done, and Lo and Behold, Steven has reconvened Porcupine Tree and has decided to take the band on a bit of a world tour(my son bought us tickets for their performance in Irving, Texas next September). That seems to me to be quite a radical turnaround from just being "Steven Wilson" solo artiste. There are probably interviews with him concerning this rather quick return to the "Tree", but I haven't seen them(yet). I'm betting that he can make much more money touring under the PT moniker, than simply SW...especially here in America.
Well I assume you have seen the interviews now and understand it was not about making more money under the PT moniker. Some of that PT material goes as far back as 2012/2013 (Chimera's Wreck was written around the same time as Ancestral, they actually have similarities).
@@santibanks Well, since you asked....I decided not to attend the PT show here in Texas. Somewhere along the way, I became somewhat disenchanted with all things Steven Wilson. I mean, it's not even PT without Colin Edwin anyway. That's not to say that I don't appreciate his talent(I actually go all the way back to "The Sky Moves Sideways"), but his head seems to be swelling with self importance, he claims to want to include many different musical genres in his canon these days. That's fine, just let me know when he incorporates blue-grass and country.
Unfortunately there are many second rate Pro rock bands today, it’s brutal. Keep doing what you do Steve, it’s ok with me, I may or may not like it, but I’m not going to compare it to Prog.
This is a great interview, thanks Fred! I think there is a bit of stereotyping going on in the interview - I love rock, pop, jazz; many genres. I've heard Steven's album and his lyrics are great, but to my mind the music is bland and unengaging - glacial and cold. I found much to enjoy on 'To The Bone' but not here, sorry! Furthermore, as Steven said, he would love more recognition from the mainstream which might also have influenced his latest style of music.
But this album doesn't sound like the most mainstream music right now, like Steven has said, it really sounds like a Steven Wilson album. The only thing I don't like is the overuse of falsetto in his vocals though.
I think a lot of the early catalog sounded best live and the stuff they did live was the best from that era. I also think Phil sang a lot of those tunes better than Peter did. Give me Supper's Ready from Seconds Out anytime over the one from 1973 or as it appears on Foxtrot. Genesis after Selling started to write more conciser songs. I think that worked well for them. Long songs are easy, short songs capturing a story with multiple moods is way more difficult (like Me and Sarah Jane).
@@Thewestslope maybe I should rephrase that with a writing analogy: if you have a lot to say and lots of material to draw from, it is easy to write a long story where you digress on every detail. Writing a very short story which is still meaningful is a challenge because naturally you are inclined to do the long thing. The same with music. Writing short songs which still have a complexity to them is a difficult thing. Hence I mentioned Me and Sarah Jane as an example. It is well known that the Beatles were a major influence on Genesis, exactly because they were able to get more complexity in short songs. Especially Tony and Phil were big Beatles and Beach Boys fans. The long thing is basically just a matter of gluing together pieces and repeating sections. Supper's Ready is literally a cut and paste job of various bits. Tony's Lover's Leap (which I think dated back to Charterhouse), some development of that piece, Gabriel's Willow Farm, and then the Jam from Tony/Phil/Mike which was Apocalypse, with a reprise of parts from the first half, rearranged. Also Peter writing long stories as lyrics aided in getting these pieces to length. Battle of Epping Forrest for example. But this is the interesting thing about the Lamb lies down. By making a long overarching story, they had the ability to make the songs themselves more concise because the lyrics kept it together, the music did not need to transition from section to section (song to song). I think only In the cage clocks in at around 6 minutes, everything else is shorter. That said, length is kind of relative. All post-Gabriel Genesis albums contain songs which are long for pop standards. It usually falls in the 4-8 minute range with some exceptions of 10 minute or longer songs.
He made an interesting comment about not using amazing musicians for this record with great guitar solos or clever drumming. Wonder what Guthrie Govan, Gavin Harrison, Marco Minnemann etc would think if it.

I say the same about country music. I don’t like country music. That doesn’t mean country music is bad. There is fantastic country music out there.

Must agree with Steven on Genesis. I adore Selling England by the Pound but much of the rest of the early catalogue is uneven.
