Great interview 👌 I need the book
in 1979 I was 15 & into ‘old’ Prog & folksy music so when my fisherman & heavy metal chum Andy saw a copy of Grave New World at his mums’ church jumble sale he kinda guessed it “ looked like the kind of thing you’d be into “ - which I loved. Still have the record & magnificent sleeve. Ghosts & Hey Little Man ( both parts ) are still absolutely beautiful & timeless. Thanks to The Strawbs & to you for sharing this from near Bournemouth in SW England 😁👍❤️🐢ps thank the gods David is still alive & playing
This album technatura is à Master pièce, is Nice to meeting this great muciens, ❤
It's a shame Adelaide has become a nanny state or maybe the pokie owners give the city council $$$ to replace live music with gambling culture? It was great during the 70's. My best mate, a guitarist (RIP) and I used to organise gigs at Flinders (where I worked) and Adelaide University's. We organised gigs for Cold Chisel at both Uni's which helped popularize them IMO. ✌️🎶🙌
great interview.
Kyross❤
Wow, just stumbled on Yogi Lang and RPWL...Blown away!
Gorgeous and true, as always has been and felt with this amazing and unforgettable band. They touch the soul of who really appreciate and understand music as an universal language. Thank you for this magical moment.
Bravo Fred 🎶🥁🎸🎙️✌️
Bravo Fred, Indeed!!! 👍🍻
Excellent travail!
Serieux. J lai ai vue en show en 2022 . Crissty de bon show.
Merci Fred !
Steven, I agree about mushrooms and olives. They are indeed the spawn of Satan. Nasty things.
I ordered the 3 cds from you guys a few days ago from Greg Walker at Synphonic . I & ll are out of print from what I understand so I am so happy to get them . I bought them after going through Greg's catalog and checking them out on You Tube ! So in this case streaming sold some cds .
Some photos I took at Massey Hall are on the website. Last saw them at Hugh's Room in 2018. A fan since 1973!
Excellent récent et albums passés et super groupe!
Thank you for such a lovely interview - great!
Great album indeed. Unfortunately it came out after the concert. It always takes me some time and a few listens to get into a new album. Don’t like to go to a concert to hear songs that I’m not familiar with. So I didn’t go.
ANGLAGARD 10-15-2022... There has been no information about the status of the band. The last recording was 10 years ago...
It is fascinating to me that individuals that perform at the level of Martin Barre are able to take life in stride and continue with their brains in normal mode. This man is a great achiever and creator of unusual and popular music. He is another great British musician.
Very informative interview, really enjoyed it. The Visitor is one of my 5 favourite albums. Oddly enough I tend to play Songs from the Lion's cage more than any other Arena album. I think Clive is right, Arena went a little flat after The Visitor and from what I have heard the new album brings so much life back into Arena. They are a superb band and look forward to the Kinross gig on the 3rd.
Thank you for this great interview! Wonderful questions and fascinating answers.
Great description by Clive of the work and worry that goes into an album release.
Great Interview!!! Thanks!!! Long Live Arena!
Great interview. Very much enjoyed it. Thank you.
Eagerly awaiting for the release of the non preorder album, I can only anticipate that having Damian Wilson as lead singer on it is certainly a strong point of this 10th record. A new release by a band we love is always a happening, and I am happy that Arena are still making music.
Thanks for your love 💘 and support towards my music 🎶 life may God bless u and your house 🏠 hold 🥰🥰
Martin Lancellot (Sp.) Barre -- My first of 13 concerts was 1973, Warchild. Martin was and is the man. He is my favorite of Tull...
Who the f*** is "Ja-pann"? lol
Must agree with Steven on Genesis. I adore Selling England by the Pound but much of the rest of the early catalogue is uneven.
I think a lot of the early catalog sounded best live and the stuff they did live was the best from that era. I also think Phil sang a lot of those tunes better than Peter did. Give me Supper's Ready from Seconds Out anytime over the one from 1973 or as it appears on Foxtrot. Genesis after Selling started to write more conciser songs. I think that worked well for them. Long songs are easy, short songs capturing a story with multiple moods is way more difficult (like Me and Sarah Jane).
@@santibanks I agree that Phil is a better vocalist than Peter. I disagree that long songs are easy.
@@Thewestslope maybe I should rephrase that with a writing analogy: if you have a lot to say and lots of material to draw from, it is easy to write a long story where you digress on every detail. Writing a very short story which is still meaningful is a challenge because naturally you are inclined to do the long thing. The same with music. Writing short songs which still have a complexity to them is a difficult thing. Hence I mentioned Me and Sarah Jane as an example. It is well known that the Beatles were a major influence on Genesis, exactly because they were able to get more complexity in short songs. Especially Tony and Phil were big Beatles and Beach Boys fans. The long thing is basically just a matter of gluing together pieces and repeating sections. Supper's Ready is literally a cut and paste job of various bits. Tony's Lover's Leap (which I think dated back to Charterhouse), some development of that piece, Gabriel's Willow Farm, and then the Jam from Tony/Phil/Mike which was Apocalypse, with a reprise of parts from the first half, rearranged. Also Peter writing long stories as lyrics aided in getting these pieces to length. Battle of Epping Forrest for example. But this is the interesting thing about the Lamb lies down. By making a long overarching story, they had the ability to make the songs themselves more concise because the lyrics kept it together, the music did not need to transition from section to section (song to song). I think only In the cage clocks in at around 6 minutes, everything else is shorter. That said, length is kind of relative. All post-Gabriel Genesis albums contain songs which are long for pop standards. It usually falls in the 4-8 minute range with some exceptions of 10 minute or longer songs.
O.K. It's mid-March 2022, a little over a year since this interview was done, and Lo and Behold, Steven has reconvened Porcupine Tree and has decided to take the band on a bit of a world tour(my son bought us tickets for their performance in Irving, Texas next September). That seems to me to be quite a radical turnaround from just being "Steven Wilson" solo artiste. There are probably interviews with him concerning this rather quick return to the "Tree", but I haven't seen them(yet). I'm betting that he can make much more money touring under the PT moniker, than simply SW...especially here in America.
Well I assume you have seen the interviews now and understand it was not about making more money under the PT moniker. Some of that PT material goes as far back as 2012/2013 (Chimera's Wreck was written around the same time as Ancestral, they actually have similarities).
@@santibanks Well, since you asked....I decided not to attend the PT show here in Texas. Somewhere along the way, I became somewhat disenchanted with all things Steven Wilson. I mean, it's not even PT without Colin Edwin anyway. That's not to say that I don't appreciate his talent(I actually go all the way back to "The Sky Moves Sideways"), but his head seems to be swelling with self importance, he claims to want to include many different musical genres in his canon these days. That's fine, just let me know when he incorporates blue-grass and country.
I sincerely hope after the 2 recent (Dreaming City and follow-up) "prog metal" albums they go back to the earlier symphonic sound they I love them for.
Richard lying through his teeth about Porcupine Tree 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Awesome stuff. Is that Neal's superhero outfit? :)
Enjoyed the interview!
It's funny, but more often than not I concur with SW's tastes in music, right now especially Max Richter and ABBA The Album. I never really was into Genesis either. Pink Floyd, Radiohead, definitely. Industrial/pop/electronic/ambient music, a lot of that as well. Now I'm going to check out the other two neo-classical composers he mentioned, no clue about them!
Fantastic! Thank you for doing this. Great if you can interview Steve Jansen later.
Fuck you Steven. You want to come back with PT because your last solo shitty pop album didn't work out as you expected. Nobody likes the kind of pop you make and PT is, by far, your BEST proyect ever. Much even more since when Gavin joined the band. And you know that for sure. Moreover, you're lying about PT getting back together for fucking sure
wow, did we have a bit of a rough day? Where do you even start with this? 1) He didn't lie - new PT music coming out this very Monday by the looks of things - happy now? 2) Just because you didn't like the new solo album doesn't mean 'nobody likes' it - I know plenty of people that do (including myself - although it's not my favourite). 3) Did you watch the interview? Telling him to 'F*ck off' for not following what you think is right certainly sounds like the entitled people he refers to. But maybe you know that and that's what got you riled up and hence the overreaction? Anyway, hope you enjoyt the new PT record :)
Nice interview.
Great interview of a genius!
Some good questions and - as ever - thoughtful, eloquent and humble responses from the master. Looking forward to the release and particularly to the next live gigs.
Some great questions there Fred, and some brilliant answers. Thank you Both! 🤠
Merci beaucoup!!
Thank you so much for interviewing Tim! He's such a talent! Love him!!
Ian Anderson could not have made a better choice in picking Martin Barre to replace Mick Abrahams. I can see no other guitar player in his place that would've given them the sound they had. I wish him all the best in his version of Jethro Tull.
A band. Ian's is not a band, and Martin's is half a band. Personality is what makes a band not supporting musicians who are inter- changeable.
Oh , like the Beatles , the Who or Rolling Stones ?
@@marvymarier8988 Unfortunately yes.
I never will understand why Ian Anderson decided to disband Jethro Tull , but to me the fact to not continue with Martin Barre is more inexplicably. Jethro Tull without Martin never is Jethro Tull , that is Ian Anderson band .
@@javierllerena5756 Ian wanted younger musicians to elevate his music.
@@aliengrey6052 Yes of course you wanted to say to decrease his music , Ian Anderson currently cannot sing , does not play the acoustic guitar only play the flute as ever but the biggest mistake was to be accompanied by bad musicians , is that the way for you to increase his music ? , if so then you are deaf .
I say the same about country music. I don’t like country music. That doesn’t mean country music is bad. There is fantastic country music out there.
