Always love listening to SW speak on current issues. I've definitely spent a lot of time on video games, but the older I get the more I am leaning towards the opinion that they are a waste of time. Not always of course, because people can definitely have meaningful experiences with video games, but I do think that people might be sacrificing valuable time that couldve been spent learning other more practical skills.
Got an email this morning that my box set and other goodies had shipped out. I cant wait to get my hands on it. I have decided that I am going to avoid listening to the album before I receive the physical product. I want it in the lyric sheet in my hands for the first time i listen. Im 22 and this will be the first time ever having that kind of experience. Steven mentioned in the interview people always having nostalgia for their teenage years. strangely i have nostalgia for times when I was not even alive.

Do we really need more fake celebrities? What else is Wilson supposed to say if Eddie's death didn't affect him? Was he supposed to lie or kiss ass? Eddie's death was as sad as anybody's death. You're not obligated to care especially when you didn't personally know the guy.
Yeah - I liked Eddie's playing quite a bit, but Steven isn't wrong - Eddie was one of the biggest influences on the shredders. My favorite guitar players aren't shredders. I like guys like Brian May.
Saying EVH's death didn't affect him is one thing. Questioning EVH's LEGACY because he considers him the father of the "shredder" movement (which he calls "vile") is another. Just because HE dosent like "fast" guitarist doesn't mean that their legacies should be downplayed or forgotten. 🤔
I love listening to Steven Wilson talking, but he must be a very very difficult person to live with 😂😂😂

Whenever I listen to him in a good interview, I think I'd be happy to have him as a next door neighbor, or as someone I knew at work. *I'm* probably a difficult person to live with, so I'm not one who should be rating how hard other people are to live with!
There are still great guitar based bands, I feel that classic rock is tired but there are still great bands that utilise the guitar beautifully.

HUM's newest.. "inlet" is all about the soaring guitars. and for me and many others should not burn out anytime soon. Gives a trance/spacey feel. Space is the future!! lol
Agreed. And theres plenty of good hip hop too! People who say "this genre is trash, this genre is dead, this decade sucks" dont look nearly hard enough for music lol.

If You live in Venezuela like me , there is no space to worry about bying, the one and only thing day by day is how yo get food, that is all.. Everything beyond that is so out of the question , You just don't bother no more, I don't know If this is good or Bad, but thats how it is.
The one small issue I had with "Fear of a Blank Planet" is that different parts of this planet are going through very different experiences.
Guitar shredding and video games are specifics but they're not the problems. If we look at the bigger picture, I think what we're really talking about here are abusiveness (in case of guitar shredding) and addiction (for video games.) Both of these two traits are bad, in whatever practice you apply them to; shredding and games unfortunately are used as talking points here.
There are shredding guitar solos by Guthrie Govan in albums that Steven produced, and he approved it, because it was done sensibly. He talked about losing oneself in imaginary world, but aren't music, books and movies, all are his favorite hobbies, also imaginary? He was quick to voice his opinions and like most of us, was prejudice. I am confident that Steven himself would agree that being abusive and addicted to anything is not good, and fairly convinced if we refrain from playing fast all the time, or got hooked in games 8 hours straight, things will be just fine.
Isn't the true message of this album is just that: technology and modern life is not a bad thing if we do not abuse it and get addicted to it?
When I look back in my life one thing I regret its spending so much time playing videogames and being so much behind a computer in my teenage years... and I'm afraid that I will regret in the future looking back to these days that I still am so much behind a computer. There's always an excuse to why, but afterwards what's left is the realization of having wasted so much time.
I have a love/hate relationship with technology and have to admit that, although I use my phone and internet a lot, I would prefer a society without these things.
Don't beat yourself up about it too much. If you enjoyed your time, then it wasn't wasted.
I tend to agree. However, I can't deny that I hold some very dear and amazing memories made inside virtual worlds. There is the flip side of the coin that you could argue reading fiction or listening to music are complete wastes of time when you could be out living life instead (which I don't ascribe to, if that wasn't clear).

By and large, I'd say that I don't disagree with what you said at all. I definitely think that the most important things in life are the mark we leave on this world -- And not the kind of mark we want to leave because we want to be remembered, but the mark we leave that makes this world a better place for the others we live amongst and for all those who will come after us.
When I had said that time spent playing video games isn't a waste if it was enjoyed, I was saying it from the perspective of someone who has met some of their closest friends through playing video games. When I was in high school around 10 years ago, I struggled a lot in my social situation as many students do. I started having really negative perspectives and feelings towards the world, and by all accounts, I think I might've turned out to be a really awful person if I had stayed on that trajectory. One of my biggest saving graces apart from my very small circle of people I trusted in 'real life', was that I had started becoming close with some friends who I had met online playing video games. Our relationships formed over years, and at first, you might've said that they were mostly meaningless acquaintances with other people who were depressed and had a lot of time to throw away at a video game. But we (in that circle of friends) eventually started really sharing our lives with one another and relying on each other as a support network for our very real issues in life. That group of friends is a bit fractured now, but we still keep in touch, and even invite one another to really big events in life like marriages.
So I maybe should've clarified -- I think that someone can spend quite a lot of time playing video games and still have a positive relationship with it. Especially since video games these days have a tendency to lead one into different experiences that ultimately end in personal growth for the individual. I must say though, even though we might disagree slightly, I really wish more people thought like you. Especially among people who spend time on social sites like this where we can share our perspectives. Your view on this reminds me of one of my favorite quotes by Mason Albert: "What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world, remains and is immortal."
I remember when Steve said he had forsaken the idea of family for his music, and I always felt that the fact that he was "okay" with it wasnt truly honest. And now all of a sudden he has a wife and kids and Im so happy for him :D
He said some people look at him with pity because he doesn’t have children. Sounds like you’re one of those people.

Eddie was so much more than a "Shredder"
He was, and from what I hear and see, Wilson acknowledges that. He refers to Eddie's heritage as (unwillingly) having become 'the father of all shredders'.
Eddie Van Halen one of the greatest guitarist of all time, just ask his worldwide fans, just a thought I was compelled to state.
Which is what Steven said
Eddie was FAR from the first fast player. Les Paul, Django, Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Bryant, John McLaughlin, Al DiMeola, Jimmy Bryant, Paco DeLucia, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Morse, etc. Were all playing fast stuff well before Van Halen 1. Eddie just made it mainstream.
@@EthnHayabusa EVH was the first purely rock shredder. Jazz and fusion players are rarely referred to as 'shredders'. Speed is a given in those genres
This is why I don't like most people. That a guy like SW can make a comment on HIS PREFERENCE AND IDEAS when it comes to Van Halen and have a bunch of people with pitchforks going for his throat.
How was THAT not a valid opinion? You may not agree, but if we aren't allowed to have such opinions..........well, we are not gonna be very creative. I wonder if Van Halen never made a comment concerning a genre or artist in the same vein...........

I love Steven's music really, I absolutely adore his works... But I think he is kind of close minded or how to put it... Like for example his comments about shredding... Of course just mindlessly playing as fast as u can without musical direction is not really music, but you can not deny that 'shredding' or playing really fast can have musical applications when expressing certain emotions like anger for example and such... Also his comments about computer games ;D... Like there are many kinds of computer games... Some have competitive character, like real life sports and are fun the same way the football or chess is.... Is chess also just a waste of time? Some games are about expressing emotions and telling a story and are deserving piece of art status just the same way as music, film or great book does. In fact a great story-telling game is a COMBINATION of all the traditional arts put together... it requires great writing, great soundtrack, great application of graphical arts... So by his logic listening to music or reading a book is waste of time. Of course, as with absolutely everything, the phrase "too much of a good thing" applies to computer games as well and if you play too much it can be bad for you... But that also applies to all the other arts as well so yeah, I find Steven's logic here very close minded, borderline ignorant.
because STEVEN is like tons of guitar students i taught that would call EVH, VAI, YNGWIE, SATCH and HOLDSWORTH "overrated" and have no soul. He is jealous he doesnt have the chops like that, and cant play fast. Simple as that.

Well said. I do think Steven has a specific idea in his mind about what 'videogames' are when he's reacting negatively to them. Likely having children has shone a light on the issue. All art is valid and time you enjoyed spending is not wasted. Everything in balance, though.
@@harveydents When you’re one of the biggest prog artists in the world, you don’t need to be jealous of anyone. I seriously doubt that’s why Steven loathes shredding- he probably just got fed up with the mindless noodling that so many of us have heard.
Interesting view from Steven on our struggle with technology and the (possible ?) bleak future of it all, especially for our children. We are living in a weird chaotic 'interbellum'. Will we lose connection with everything that made us human so far: curiosity, creativity etc. Thanks for this "philosophical" interview ! Oh yes.... looking forward to hear the new album as well 😄

To all offended Eddie Van Halen fans: He didn't offend EVH in any way. He even said that Eddie was an extraordinary musician. He just haven't been touched by his death. Not everyone needs to be upset just because you're upset. Chill out
What I found offensive was his mischaracterization of Eddie’s place in music history. It was totally inaccurate and uninformed. I’m not a fan of Neil Peart or Rush, and I wouldn’t pretend that Neil’s death personally affected me, but I’m not going to make uninformed claims about Neil’s drumming or his influence on other drummers.
David Crosby did the same thing when he declared that Hendrix was the only person to ever change electric guitar.
Yes, I am offended by stupidity. This guy simply has no clue what he’s talking about. He knows really little about music history or the nuances in Eddie’s playing that make him better than your average shredder.
@@JohnDoe-gk7ok Why offensive? It's just his honest opinion. He has the right to see it that way (which btw is also my opinion). Nothing to be offended about it. There's no reason to get offended by anything except for insulting your mother. People are so touchy nowadays. If you get easily offended you shouldn't be watching interviews where people get asked about their opinion.
Did not know who this C leaguer was until he mistakenly commented on Ed van Halen in a negative way.......Ed was not a shredder, if other guitarists thought their way to make a niche was to be faster, that's influence I suppose.
He's been nominated for 5 Grammy awards, more than VH. C Leaguer is a joke, but his comments were pretty soul crushing
@Noartist Yeah, I'd agree usually about the Grammys but not in this case since they were nominated for best surround sound album. It's a non televised category and requires an attention to detail that most others don't. I've played guitar for 20 years, I agree with what you've said for the most part

King Ghost is definitely one of the two best tracks of Steven’s solo career; up there with Happy Returns

STEVEN is like the guitar students i use to have that would say EVH, VAI, SATCH, RHOADS, YNGWIE and HOLDSWORTH have no "soul" in their playing.. TRANSLATION: "i cant play very fast, i suck at it, THEREFORE i will put down other EXTREMELY talented players who can" Simple as that.
Eddie's legacy was a generation of copycat shredders because people totally missed his point. He was a far better rhythm guitarrist and overall musician than his fast playing in solos. His weird solos and fast playing were more like "hey, look what I can do with this instrument, innit cool? Ok now back to my arsenal of KILLER rhythm compositions that absolutely NO ONE can create with so much versatility and finesse as I can". Of course other folks could never touch what Van Halen was all about (the actual songs), so they just tried to copy the weird fast soloing. Eddie has stated several times that he went "Oh Jesus. what have I done" , when seeing dozens and dozens of copycat guitarrists just playing fast for showing off. Eddie didn't like it as well, he knew people missed the point
I totally agree. His rhythm was unmatched. Steven may be slightly too young to realize this. Although, he does offer some respect.
He did offer some respect but made evh legacy sound more negative than positive which is just total ignorance.
I'm curious about Steven's thoughts about Frank Zappa, particularly his '73-'75 band which I have been exploring further through "The Roxy Movie" and "You Can't Do That Onstage Anymore vol.2" album. The music and the band are outstanding, however; I've never been a particular fan of Frank's guitar solos, to me they're just notes without feeling...they lack soul and direction. His playing is never note perfect which is strange for someone who demanded nothing but the best performances from his bands.
He would say "Pure rubbish, mate.... I need a highways worth of intro... Ok?.... I like to have a Crumpet and tune up while the keyboard player stands there like... "Come on dude. It's been like twenty minutes already"
Zappa is God... For real. You'll get it at some point. Rhythms, Textures, and chaos, bruh🤔
@@Jlhendry1 I don't get your point, and Zappa is not God...what he was...a genius at creating music through the writing process and finding musicians that could replicate his music both live and in the studio. My issue with Frank is his clumsy guitar solos, and through reading some of his interviews, he was rarely pleased with them himself.
Just listened to the box set. Absolutely amazing album. The extra tracks are as usual as good as any of the album itself. For me his best album. Epic.

It's nice when he talks about animal rights\veganism. Here in the UK I am finding a wonderful community about this.
But i definetly not agree about videogames.
I played them during my childhood \ teenager years and I am still curious about the outside world.
But, as he said, when you are costantly under the attack of hate\fake news, videogames\books\movies\music can really save your mind.
Videogames are just another form of art and expression.
I can agree with you in the point that videogames can be works of art. But in my opinion most video games today are simply made to get people addicted to, what is a shame, but since it is not as unhealthy as for example drugs, it is widely accepted and has a better reputation than illegal drugs or even legal ones. I think some video games could even be called drugs.

In my case, during the last summer, stuck in a room in London, playing the Witcher 3 really helped me to being distracted from the outside.
I think everything, with the right moderation, it's okay.
But I think that today, most of the games\apps are designed to take our attention everytime. And that's what it's driving me crazy.
His comments about how he never understood "shredder" music is interesting. Many of his solos involve fast (yet accurate) playing, even what he did in the solo of the In Floral Green cover, so it's as though someone who excels at fast running says "yeah I never understood people who run sprints for sports".
His idea that the speed of a phrase relates to quality of sound baffles me. Slow is not automatically better. Some people feel music differently, and it comes out more notes per second. Different phrases for different moods. If you want long whole notes like David Gilmour, then listen to Pink Floyd. Stop insisting that we should all play like him.
Wilson is great, but man his interviews are a bummer. Pretentious doesn’t begin to cover it.
@@EthnHayabusa Well said, Ive never understood why if something is technically proficient (fast) or musically complex it automatically equates to a lack of emotion. For me, the passion lies in the intensity of fast playing, I enjoy both styles. I love guys like BB King, Dave Gilmour, Yngwie, Steve Vai equally but for different reasons, it all depends on what mood I’m in. As a musician, I’ve also found that exploring all different genres without pre conceived prejudices has made me more well rounded and a more mature sounding player. A lot of the hate (in my experience anyway) for technically demanding music comes from these Indie guys (nothing wrong with indie!) that for some reason love to brag about not practicing lol.
So he offers hope for another PTree album - except now that we're expecting one, we can be sure it won't happen. And in the same vein, we can expect his next album will be full of guitar-shredding solos. 😀
Porcupine Tree is like plan B if his solo albums sale started to decline.

@@mancakessyrup5384 - I expect most PTree fans are hoping for new studio albums, not just remixing/re-releasing of the songs from 10-20 years ago. And both Richard and Gavin have mentioned that they wished Porcupine Tree had ended on a stronger album than "The Incident" was.
The really dumb thing about my comment was that it wasn't meant for this interview! I read multiple interviews from Steven at the same day, wrote a comment on this video, but I was reacting to something he had said in a different interview! One of my friends read my comment and said "Hope for another PTree album? WTH are you talking about?"

as someone who is part of the younger generation i still find as many movies, music, and books like steven is talking about. I get his point too but arent video games really just an addition to that? Even though I barely play games anymore lol

Having a couple of shredding solos dont make his statement less genuine, he didnt even talk about EVH itself, its the generalization of his guitar contributions or mainstream painting hum as a pioneer of shredder guitarrist, guthrie govan sure can play fast a lot of notes, but his use in music dont revolve arround how fast he can play

I have to say this interviewer is very very good
I think what he says rock or "guitar music" can be applied to all kinds of music. To me we live in an era of subgenres and a sort of rebirth of progressivism, where borders between genres are continously being challenge. It has been a long time since, to my knowledge, that an entirely new genre has been created.
That is great, that a person has the depth and creativity to search for something new. The fact that he is searching for this something new usually comes from older music. Inspiration is a wonderful thing. I love all types of music, just depends on my mood or the atmosphere in which I may be residing in. There is all types of music no matter what era its from. It all has a place. Humans are evolving and changing. Lets not forget our past tho. Good, bad, or indifferent. I just glad music is here for me to explore.
If you can't say anything nice or at least positive, then really just don't say anything at all. why would you want to keep spreading negativity. There is enough of that already. Don't be a twat. Evolve from the shit..
The problem I've had with abrupt philosophical 180s is that they quickly lose steam. I've eschewed acoustic instruments before, but always felt homesick for them after dalliances with electronic music. I've delved into microtonal music and made me feel ill after a while.
Wilson always does this, it's nothing new. Before the last album, it was that he wanted to delve into pop music. Now, it's electronic music. Next album, I wouldn't be surprised if he did rap. His solo work meanders everywhere.
we are still organic beings, connecting with something like an acoustic guitar... its organic... we arent robots, yet
I think an artist, more than anyone, should appreciate a medium for what it can be. Of course if Steven never played a videogame he is not gonna "get it". I'm willing to bet, if it wasn't a philosophical issue, he would find plenty to enjoy and would find things that move him........just as much as music or movies.
Videogames are an artform just like music and movies are, for me. It's clay that the human being uses to create and communicate something. So ...it's about how creative and soulful the human is....that will dedicate the quality of the art obviously.
I can only say that growing up in canada and north America we had a different relationship with van Halen more rocker cool guy it you were into hard rock as opposed to disco we wore black leather and rock boots civil war battle boots van Halen was the shit for years it's obvious from listeningvtobyour music that you've been influenced by British artists opposed to American artists as I can hear the pink floyd influences seeing I've never heard of you till this interview I have taken some time to listen to your music and its quite good you and eddy have a totally different playing style I like what I heard you're both good you can definitely hear the pink Floyd influence in your music

Interesting Interview. I like stevens thoughts about music but also i don´t think that guitar music is over. This was a terrible thing and if i imagine that all these awful chart music of today would be the future...oh no:-( I´m a big fan of eddie although i agree with his statement that shredding seems to be an olympic sport. Yes, ed was much more than a shredder but who else brought more impact in this way of playing like eddie did?
By the way: I´m disappointed with TFB. No, i don´t wanted "Hand.Cannot.Erase V.2.0", but this album is very boring to my ears. "Song Of I" was a statement on "To The Bone", and i thought that this sound was the basic of this record. Now it´s a strange collection of songs that seems like a statement: "I don´t wanna make prog things anymore and this is the future of music"...
Steven was almost the only musician that makes me believe in good music of the present. THE FUTURE BITES is the opposite and except a few songs like "King Ghost", 12 Things I Forgot", "Personal Shopper" and "Follower" it´s a sad development of his music...

Eddie Van Halen played with the harmonizing heart and rhythm of a pianist. He was an innovator in everything from effects to taste. Girl Gone Bad would have said ..
My favourite VH song, it's almost progressive.
If he thinks EVH plays music like it's an olympic sport (which he couldn't be more off about), how does he feel about jazz guitarists, classical pianists, flamenco and classical guitarists? Ridiculous.

Ultimately no. All sensory experiences that convey a story....that take in on an audiovisual experience.

I’m 45 and when I look at the younger generations I‘m astonished about how much they care about the world, how they fight for a better future, how they can experience much more music and movies and art in their whole life because they grew up with the internet. And today you can make a living out of playing games ... in the 80s it really was a time killer.

It just goes to show open-mindedness is a lifetime PURSUIT and something you must keep practice. I mean, I'm 34....and in the last 4 years.....(partially because I haven't been following my passions as much perhaps) I've felt a bit like I'm becoming a bit conservative.........I no longer experiment with different music too much..........or stick to tried and true things I like in terms of music, movies etc...................and I look at a lot of new stuff out there and for the FIRST time....I start feeling like I "DO" think a bit.......that what existed in "my time" was better than what we have today (can't stand mumble rap and most music today that is popular for instances).
But at least I know I want to keep being open minded.........because the truth of the matter is............we ARE conditioned by our experiences..........sow e are never gonna be truly objective..........unless we KEEP exploring.....keep questioning.......keep embrancing.
Youthfulness has fuck all to do with age. But it is true. that the culture we live in kinda makes it a bit harder to remain youthful and exploratory as you grow older.

I never knew him directly, but I definitely knew things about him through his music, tv, and the media. However, I'm impacted because he was a fellow-human being, someone's son, husband, father, and etc. His life had value, and impacted the world. I can't understand how anyone can be so callous!!! Such heartless comments can only cause his loved ones more heartache. Please think before you speak. Also, it's best to stay silent if what you say doesn't help his loved ones heal. Well... I would encourage you to listen to his music dude, SW is REALLY good. The musicians he has played with embarrass VH. That said EVH on his own was a singular talent in his ability. A buddy's dad once told me he met Eddie as a bartender at the Omni one night in the early 90s and said EVH was the nicest human being he had ever met

I find it hilarious that in 2021 people say that Eddie Van Halen was never a shredder. He was the biggest shredder in the 80s. Stop
Of course he was a shredder, but he also played with melody and great timing. He always had a feel for the appropriate place to apply tapping, legato, harmonics, etc. He was also a genius at writing riffs. He didn’t just mindlessly run up and down scales with no sense of the music playing in the background. He knew how to serve the song. In the end, he developed a distinct voice on the guitar; anytime you hear an EVH solo, you know it is him. And I would argue that he wasn’t the biggest shredder of the 80s... 70s? Yes. But the 80s saw the emergence of guys like Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen, etc.
But this guy I never heard of just wants to pigeonhole Eddie as a “shredder” without considering the broader musical avenues he was able to take by virtue of his technique. The same guy who created I’m the One, Mean Street, and Unchained was able to create melodic stuff like Secrets and Dance the Night Away.

Anyways the point is labeling someone with a shallow word like "shredder" and completely disregarding all of the amazing songs they wrote not to mention influencing an entire generation not only musically but pop culture. Almost all of which will leave Steven Wilson in the dust over time. And this is coming from a fan of Porcupine Tree. Steven has become more and more pretentious the further he has gotten into his solo career, and simultaneously more and more shallow in terms of output. The material isn't getting any better. The best things he did sounded like a ripoff of Rush on his solo material. He also admitted early in his career to writing music for financial gain where he was literally pandering to the lowest common denominator. This is only my opinion but his comments were fairly dismissive here and therefore disrespectful. It's okay to say he didn't like it but to label Eddie as simply a shredder was very dismissive.
It's not that he was a shredder, he was an amazing musician that could ALSO shred, and on a level that no one had done before. People have written good songs before, but nobody could shred like Ed on the late 70s and early 80s. So that's what a lot of people talked about, when in fact he was UNTOUCHED in 2 main areas of rock music : killer rhythm riffs and ... tone, tone, tone, a thousand times TONE

Steven being bored of guitars. This shattered me. Although Steven's career is very long, I still wish I hadn't watched this.
Eddie lead with his guitar but then also supported the other instruments and some how found a way to sing back up lyrics with his strings as well as his voice. ... ... Im pretty sure this guy has only heard radio Van Halen and thus would really have no clue what he was talking about. Cathedral for instance is very much NOT SHREDDING. Little Guitars is shred free.
He specifically said that he knows there was more to EVH than shredding, but that shredding was his legacy. I thought he was pretty respectful about it, really.
I don't share his belief the '80s were better. Every generation tends to think their teen years were the best, so it's not just our generation. His parents felt the world was better in their day, and their parents, etc. I'm 51 and I loved the '80s, but I find today is one of the best times to be witnessing. Also, shredding is a valid method of playing guitar. To say otherwise is disingenuous and snobbish.
I am also 51. I think music in the early 80s was extremely innovative. So were the early 90s. I love a lot of current music, but I also feel a lot of music is stagnating circa the late 80s.

I don't agree with Steven - Jazz wasn't wiped out, it's still a relevant and vibrant genre. It's the same with guitar - it will always live on and be a source of excitement and inspiration; great guitar riffs and solos will always be enjoyed and appreciated. I think what he's saying is that he's done with it, and that's his choice.
@@Lineageholder I think what he means is that first rock replaced jazz, and now electronic replaces rock, as the "mainstream" music genre and that, in a way, is true. The reason is that after some time, these genres exhaust their capabilities to impress mainstream audiences. The excitement of them being new and fresh simply wears out. It doesn't mean they cease to exist, or cease to be "good" - they do exist, and will stil excite certain amount of people, but won't have the same impact or so called "mass" appeal as they used to. That's what happened to jazz 50 years ago and that's what happens to rock now. And i'm sure by 2050 same thing will happen to electronic music. It's just the natural way the things evolve.

Yes ? He has been involved with Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, No-Man, Bass Communion, Opeth and many others. Within the modern prog scene Steven Wilson is one of the biggest artist. It's not for everyone but he has made a lot of great music.
Don't forget his work to remaster several King Crimson albums

As many people have commented , there are numerous great guitar based albums being released. I find it strange the Beethoven was born in the 1700s yet there is still amazing piano and orchestra music being written - why can SW not find some interesting guitar music ? I remember years ago an interview with Steven when he observed how he had sacrificed family and a personal life for music . That has all has changed with him now married with kids and so perhaps have his priorities . So maybe he re-evalued his priorities and kinda took the easy route and layered track after track electronically with the aid of programming software and used that as the base for the album? - Certainly he is entitled to do whatever he likes - I still rate him as one of the best - but perhaps he uses the Shakespearian quote a little too easily , hence does he " protest to much methinks? "

But in this interview, he essentially asserted that guitar based music is done, which I disagree with. Anyways, doesn't really matter. I do think Steven's new album is very creative, although I don't see myself listening to it many times. Not as enjoyable as some of his other solo records. Cheers

I disagree with his comments on Eddie. It's a pretty cocky statement honestly- he is sounding fairly condescending. He's labeling Eddie as something he was not from an ignorant point of view. This seems like something you would say if you believed you were pretty amazing. And I like Porcupine Tree quite a bit.
I had no idea who this guy was until I stumbled across an article in which he proclaims that Eddie Van Halen’s influence on the music industry was negative. Totally uninformed bullshit. He’s also incredibly vague with his criticism, as he lumps shredders under this single umbrella when many of them sounded so different; e.g., Malmsteen sounds nothing like Nuno. He’s also historically inaccurate; shredding has been around since at least the 1800s. Jazz greats like Tal Farlow, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Johnny Griffin, Django were “shredding” long before EVH.

To consider Edward Van Halen "a shredder" guitar player is an absolute insult. Edward is renowned for his melodic and rhythm playing as well as his riff structure.
