Zathras was a humanoid of unknown origin who took care of the Great Machine on Epsilon III. His brothers, including Zathras, were all named Zathras, but with minute differences in pronunciation.
Powered by a massive network of advanced fusion reactors, some of which are up to 10 miles across, this complex machine required a sentient being to merge with it in order to regulate and stabilize its operation. With the colossal amount of raw power at its disposal, the machine is known to be able to boost a tachyon signal over dozens of light years, project the operator's mind clear into deep space and even control and widen a temporal rift.
Epsilon III is the third planet of the Epsilon Eridani system, in Euphrates Sector, Grid Epsilon. The primary jumpgate in the system is in high orbit above it. It's a pity the Great Machine was never mentioned after 4th season.
I'd like to imagine an alternate path.
With the Shadow War over forever, Draal, clan Zathras, and the Great Machine were without purpose, for the first time since it went online over 500 years ago.
A few years after the ISA's founding, Sheridan and Delenn approached Draal. The ISA had a mandate to share advanced technologies with its member worlds, and the Machine was one of the richest sources of advanced tech in the galaxy. S&D proposed assembling a team of the finest scientific minds across ISA membership. Under Draal's supervision, they would study the Machine. There would be no shortcuts, no quick and dirty reverse-engineering, no tech-hijacking. Knowledge gains would be gradual, and freely disseminated across the ISA members. Draal was intrigued, and agreed.
Years passed. The scientific treaty had its challenges, but overall it flourished. Some technological integration between the Machine and Babylon5 was even done. With political borders shifting, the station's mission gradually shifted from diplomatic to scientific. Then after 19 years, Babylon5 fell back into Earthgov hands. Earth felt if they were to pay the upkeep of the station, they deserved a bigger piece of the scientific pie. Draal refused, so Earth made plans to retire and scrap Babylon 5. They felt a smaller scientific outpost on Epsilon 3 would be much cheaper to maintain.
However the ISA and Draal weren't going to let that happen. Babylon 5 was both a unifying symbol for the entire galaxy, and a major history site as the birthplace of the ISA. Instead, Draal took over care and maintenance of B5. With his crew of researchers and engineers, they integrated B5 with the Great Machine. Only part of the station was needed to support the researchers. The rest was preserved as a Great Museum. Draal even decided to make the Great Machine's massive 500+ year archives available to the public. Babylon 5 became a great intergalactic university for scientists, engineers, researchers, and historians.
B5 once changed the course of history. Thanks to Draal, it found new purpose in preserving history.

I always felt the machine's purpose was for something other than the Shadow war. Draal and the machine helped, but I never really got the sense it was built for the purpose.
If it was, then someone would need the info that Epsilon III would become an important spot in the upcoming war. The only possibility would be Sinclair/Valen or Zathras. Personally I'd lean more towards Zathras as he knew a lot about the machine.

The great machine was obviously built by one of the First Ones. How else was it able to do what it can. As for the First Ones that built it,, they may have gone beyond the rim when most of the others did, or maybe they put themselves into the great machine, which gives it the ability to do what it does. And just as the Shadow ships need organic beings to be the main processor for their ships, the Great Machine also needs a organic being to be its processor.
I like to think that the Great Machine was built by the Krell.

Zathras and his brothers differentiated themselves amongst aliens by changes in the stress patterns in their names, whose spellings were identical. Not changes in pronunciation.
