- I recorded my version of the classic Van Halen Pleasure Dome song from their For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge album.
There are no guitars or vocals from the original recording in this mix.

Thanks to Van Halen for writing this great song and thanks to Eddie for inspiring guitarists around the world.
People also forget the great drumming on this song. Alex was doing some stuff that gets overlooked because of Eddie which is a shame. Dude was a killer drummer and I felt never got the recognition because of Eddie. This song is hard as crap to play on drums.
Yea, Alex is very underrated.
This song was the introduction of Alex drum solo during the right here right now tour . Alex is definitely too underrated.
This is really an ode to the VH brothers. The drumming and guitar playing was superb! Nice to hear it without the vocals to bring out all the bits =)
I would love to have the entire VH catalog minus the lead vocals but still with the background vocals and instruments.
They really need to do this.
Holy shit!!!
Tone: 10/10
Execution: 10/10
Thanks!
Sensacional .....eu como fã do Eddie fiquei com os olhos cheios d'água
I love the "no vocals". This obviously came out when Satch, Vai et al were releasing "guitar albums" and Ed was frankly "stuck" with vocalists that simply added very little. This may sound harsh, but EVH was the best rock rhythm player ever and these "no vocal" covers highlight the song structure and complexity of composition.
Thanks! I wish this would have be available when I was young and learning. Although my ear might not be as good if that was the case. Guitarists have it easy these days. Being able to watch someone play something cuts the learning curve down bigtime. At the cost of what is the question though.
Very true for the most part, I love Hagar, and thought he was good for them, but a song like this doesn't need any lyrics practically!
Eddie's lydian masterpiece. Great playing!
Now imagine standing up, moving around and singing backup while playing the guitar parts.
Thank you for all of what you do here. We all love Eddie, and you're keeping his spirit alive!
Wow, thanks for the support Lawdog!
I wish I could play this song. I've listened to and tried to play along with Pleasure Dome probably over 300 times and I've put in well over 10,000 hours. I just don't have the talent. Pleasure Dome and Me Wise Magic are my favorite VH songs with Respect the Wind a close third. The guy below is spot on. Alex's drumming allows Ed to perform miracles and vice versa.
One of my EVH favorites! Superb job man!
Thanks!
Phenomenal as usual
I'm having loads of fun just watching you play these amazing songs - awesome work bro 🤙
Thanks again Dragon!
Do you have tab available? Would love to have a visual roadmap to follow. Awesome.
I play EVH…this is a really difficult song…this should have more likes
Thanks! UA-cam makes no sense to me. I just do this when I feel like it now because of this.
At the time this was recorded, I believe Ed was working on the new Peavey 5150. He was messing around with those prototypes and Soldanos as well. He had fully evolved past the brown sound by this time.
Correct, he was tone chasing for sure. I miss the Marshall sound though.
Great job! Keep on rockin!! 🤟🤟
Thanks!
Great! Thanks!
Thanks!
wow this looks really complex i need to learn this!
Great job as always. Definitely a top 3 Hagar era song. As a side note, this is my favorite drums work from Alex.
Thanks Chuck! Alex is awesome on this song.
So good
Thanks!
Nice
Never seen an RG square heel with a Fender style neck on it before. Cool. I built a custom Swamp Ash RG AANJ with modified a Japanese reverse headstock Jackson neck.
Cool stuff.
Awesome covers, by the way. In fact, I forgot that these songs existed, as I haven't heard them in years.
I built this way back in '92 I think. I did not like the Ibanez neck so I had Warmoth build a custom neck for me. It is still the best playing neck I have ever felt. Thanks!
badass! and i agree, i am almost certain he used a steinberger transtrem guitar when it was recorded, and i am pretty sure with the 'bergers you can just swap the faceplates and resolder the input jack, and change the layout of the guitar. swear ive seen pics of an HSS GL2T faceplate somewhere in a pic from 5150
Thanks! Yea, that trem pulling back and staying in tune was a dead giveaway for me. And knowing that Ed liked to change guitars, you know he screwed around with the Steinberger too!
Really great job. The tone was awesome as well as the playing.
Thanks Tommy!
Great job man!
Thanks!
Absolutely incredible job man!
Thanks a ton!
Very good!
That's what I mean. I admire Eddie's musicality much more than his tapping solos. That comes across very well in this song.
Thanks Dan!
What would it have been like if 'Pleasure Dome' was on the Fair Warning album?
Or 1984!
Amazing!
Thanks!
Badass dude Ace🤟🏻
Thanks!
Sounds great!
Thanks!
I feel your pain and applaud you. Girl gone bad is my current everest.
my 2 cents to respond to your questions, i dont hear the steinberger nor the single coils on the track though your guitar sounds very close (and good). This was recorded right around the time eddie developed his first music man so i hear the split coils on the recording more than pure singles but thats just my ear and could certainly be wrong.
no matter what, great work on the playing!
Thanks Mark! I'm working on Top Jimmy right then Girl is next!
He's definitely using the Steinberger on this track. There are a couple of places where you can't replicate without it.
@@TheRetroGuitarist i will defer to your obvious expertise on the matter!
Haha! Not sure about that. It's always hard to tell but the trem is a dead giveaway for me. The pickups? Man, who knows. That man was always messing around with his stuff.
Awesome 🤘🏼
Thanks! 😁
🤘😎🤘
What is this Guitar?
I thought it was an Ibanez RG550 but with this Headstock?
It is an Ibanez RG550 from 1990 with a Warmoth neck.
Cool ! Is this guitar actually an Ibanez RG with a replacement Warmoth neck on it ? It looks killer
Yea, the Warmoth neck was added sometime around 92-93 and I love it!
Always felt like this would have been a perfect Roth era piece of music!
I agree.
i think neck pup on the solo also. you rip dude!
Yea, I think the solo was definitely a humbucker neck. I wanted it to be one continuous takes so I decided to roll with it.
try ballot or the bullet, it's very hard too
Will do! I love VH3 and think it is some of Eddie's best song writing.
HEY, I JUST CAME ACROSS ONE OF YOUR VIDEOS AND THEN STARTED WATCHING A FEW OTHERS. I WANT TO ASK YOU IF YOU MIGHT LIVE IN OR AROUND THE NYC AREA? AND IF SO? IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO TALK MORE ABOUT POSSIBLY PLAYING GUITAR ON 3 FULL ALBUMS OF ORIGINAL 80s "HAIR/ROCK/DANCE" MUSIC? BASICALLY SOUNDS FROM ALL THE HAIR BANDS BUT WITH MY OWN UNIQUE STYLE OF SOUNDS. ( ONE ALBUM AT A TIME OF COURSE ) LET ME KNOW..
Not in the NYC area but location really doesn't matter anymore.
@@TheRetroGuitarist Hey.. Well, it does matter if you want to rehearse or atleast record live together. Im old school, and i know playing live in the same room together creates a magic not found in other forms of playing/recording. I want to put a band together. How far out of the area are you?
Excellent without Sammy's vocals.
I guess this song gets a bit repetitive towards the end, so it makes sense to shorten it when the vocals are gone.
I think the ultimate version of this song is somewhere halfway between this performance of yours without vocals and the live version from Live Right Here Right Now which unfortunately has no solo.
No matter which version, this song rips! :-)
