Dick Tracy, The Rocketeer, The Shadow, and The Phantom. The 90's were a great decade for comic book pulp hero adaptations.

    I ADORE this film.
The casting, the direction, the score...all pitch perfect. One of THE best adaptions of a graphic work ever put on film, it does the artwork of Dave Stevens proud.
Four out of four stars, it deserved far better than the reception it received initially.

My mother took me to see Rocketeer in theaters. It was one of my most enjoyable theater experiences. You really can't experience the scope of this film without a big screen and large size speakers thundering at you. When you saw that huge zepplin first appear, it was an enormous and incredible sight. Plus, the flow of the film was perfect - I was on the edge of my seat the entire film. Thanks Mom!

The Rocketeer came out in June 1991 and I remember seeing it in theaters. I have been a huge Rocketeer fan ever since. I believe one of the reasons it didn't do as well as Disney would have hoped was due to it being overshadowed by some huge blockbusters like Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Terminator 2 Judgment Day. If you look at the lineup of movies that summer it was an amazing time to be a kid.

  • @Hiraghm

The nearest thing to "The Rocketeer" is "Guardians of the Galaxy" (one and two). Peter Quill, although instead of being a poor-but-honest young man is a pirate, embodies some of the "reluctant hero" traits of the Rocketeer, and flies around with a jetpack while wearing a metal helmet...

This movie is underrated. It showcases why Joe Johnston is a great director. And while I despise JP3, it is clear why Marvel Studios picked him to do Captain America the First Avenger. He has such a talent for capturing the fun/ campy aspect of the 30s and 40s.
I know this film is currently going to be rebooted by James Wan. While I am curious, I do hope Wan is able to honor the original film, while also providing his own style.

I gotta confess this is one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies. I love the old planes. I think the main theme is one of the best Horner ever composed, especially the wonderful piano sections. And the cast is fun and engaging and nails it. I especially love Alan Arkin and Timothy Dalton in it. You can tell they are having great fun.
I don't know why everyone says Campbell's career bombed out after this? While he never had a great leading man movie career, he has been a television stable pretty much nonstop since the Rocketeer came out having more series regular credits than most actors. It's not like he vanished into Hollywood obscurity never to work again.

    • @jamiebraswell5520
      @jamiebraswell5520 4 роки тому +1

Why is it a guilty pleasure? Guilty pleasure should only be applied to films you know are bad but you like it anyhow. The Rocketeer has never been considered a bad movie.

The Rocketeer was a terrific film.I never understood why it did not do tremendous box office at that time.I would have loved to see sequels. I always envisioned one could have been The Rocketeer working with The Shadow which was another fun film that did not do great when it was released.

Everyone must have watched a different film than I did as a kid, because I was super-excited for this film and can't remember being more disappointed. It billed itself as a mixture of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Captain America, and while I suppose it was, it was generally, imo, trash.

    • @richb313
      @richb313 7 років тому

You are the one who must have seen a different movie or perhaps none at all. Rocketeer 1991 Last Crusade 1989, Captain America 2011. Disney never compares it's movies to those owned by other companies.

I just watched this film for the first time since I first saw it in Leicester square in 1991. I've got to say the special effects hold up, with many of ILM's founding members having honed their craft on some other 1930's style matinee serial in 1977. James Horner's music is great whilst remaining similar to may other scores, namely Apollo 13 and Project X (Matthew Broderick edition). For me however, at 13 and at 39, Jennifer Connolly's rack steals the show.

*unfortunately true...this movie would be way different (if not totally unwatchable) if remade today given the amount of sjw/woke and political/gender identity agenda post digestive matter that would be woven into and slathered all over the plot and into the motivations of each and every person appearing on the screen*
*glad i saw this with my younger brother in the theaters when it was first released...we both enjoyed this movie a lot*

@@scottmantooth8785 They (evil house of mouse) have been planning a black female (possibly group) Rocketeer for a few years now. I am dreading it. Luckily it seems to be stuck in development, so hopefully it never comes to fruition. I'd rather there be no new Rocketeer movie if it's going to be propaganda garbage.

Spot on review Olly, the score still gives me goose bumps when I hear it. I was a young 16 year old embarking on a career in aviation when this came out, so you can guess how pumped up this film used to get me. I'm now 20 years into a career as a professional aviator and I caught Rocketeer being repeated on TV a few weeks ago; I grabbed a cuppa, sat down and reverted right back to my teen years! :)

I love Superhero movies set in the golden age of comics of the 1930s and 1940s. The Phantom, The Shadow and The Rocketeer are personal favourites. My all time favourite hero is Captain America and I have a soft spot for the 1990 movie and love the Joe Johnston directed movie for the MCU. Though I feel that could have used actual swastika wearing Nazis rather than the ersatz Hydra troops.

NO WAY. Captain Duhmerica is an *insult* to the real Captain America.

You're right, it's sad when movies that have a period setting tended to flop. I love period piece films, all thanks to the _Indiana_ _Jones_ films. I believe movies like that have a visually interesting setting, _The_ _Rocketeer_ being a good example, and it's pretty understandable why Marvel chose Joe Johnston for _Captain_ _America:_ _The_ _First_ _Avenger_, which I love as well for its WW2 setting.

I completely agree on the disappointing Blu Ray release. A film of this scope should have had MANY extras. I was a huge fan of the film when I saw it in 91 and really wished they had done another. I saw it as an heir apparent to the Indiana Jones series with its visual style, period setting, and mix of action with humor. It certainly is a "feel good" film that can be enjoyed by young and old alike. I can see why Joe Johnston was picked to helm Captain America...but I still maintain that Rocketeer was better.

Don't tell there is no way THE ROCKETEER and DICK TRACY could never crossover. Both comics took place during the 1930/40's and both feature creepy looking designed henchmen that look like they could have come from Big Boys gang,so they could have crossed over!

The rocket pack and helmet in this film always remind me of the "Rocket Man" serials of the late 1940's and early 50's. When "Rocketeer" came out, VHS's of those old serials appeared in nearly every store. I love both the Disney film and those old serials. Too bad there were no continuation for this story.

This movie is so entertaining, and Campbell and Connelly were great. I always hoped for a sequel.

A question..where did you find that rare behind the scenes footage with Chris Reeve? I have been scouring the net and everywhere for behind the scenes looks at the making of this wonderful film. This was such a great review it makes me want to watch the film again. Man, this brings back memories and reminds me of how much I adore this film. Great job once again with the review, and keep it up you got some real talent with these reviews.

Remember seeing this one in the theater when it first came out. It was so good at the time that I managed to sit half way through it despite the fact that there was a flash flood, and the first couple rows were ankle deep in water.

Timothy Dalton should be a villain more. He did a good job. I really liked this movie.

Great job with a review of a childhood favorite of mine the rocketeer. Listening to the score gives me chills all over again. Great job editing the intro. It was excellent. This film deserves a special edition. Not the lame half assed 25th anniversary blu ray with better picture quality but no features. This movie is a classic. I don't care what anyone says, and it still stands as one of the best comic book adaptations to date.

Another fantastic review. I loved the use of miniatures, especially for the flying scenes. Reminds me of one of Robocop 3's jetpack scenes.
A big part of me wishes I appreciated period action films like this and Phantom. Looking back on them now there's just so much to enjoy in them from the lavishly over the top villains to the more practical effects. They know they're comic book films. These days most of them just feel like caricatures of themselves and not the source material. Of course, as a kid, most of us are just drawn to those kid-pleasing films like Turtles and end up overlooking the others which age like fine wine, ha.

For years the poster to this movie was plastered on the wall of my local movie theater throughout the 90s. I was always so intrigued by it but never got around to watching it.

One of my favorite throwback gems. Shout out to the great prosthetics used to make one of the henchmen look like Rondo Hatten.

I don't think I ever noticed it when watching that it was a miniature for the Rocketeer... I assumed it was an actor in a suit in front of a green screen all the way through.
It's a really great film though, and I regret not seeing it at the pictures when I was a kid.

Great Review on this, I remember hiring it as a kid just for Timothy Dalton's prescence alone, such an underrated actor and the best bond next to Connery. and this film was a lot of fun :)

I saw this twice in theater. I absolutely love this film, especially Jennifer Connelly and Alan Arkin. This movie was a good example for why Joe Johnston was picked to direct "Captain America: The First Avenger".
