The Rocketeer is a 1991 film from Walt Disney Pictures, based upon the comic book character of the same name Set in 1938 Los Angeles, California, The Rocketeer tells the story of stunt pilot Cliff Secord who stumbles upon a hidden rocket-powered jet pack that he thereafter uses to fly without the need of an aircraft. His heroic deeds soon attract the attention of Howard Hughes and the FBI, who are hunting for the missing jet pack, as well as the Axis operatives that stole it from Hughes. Also in 1991, a game published by Bandai came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System. A year later the Super Nintendo game also came out. In this review the Nerd covers both games, dons his old Nerd Shirt, and builds the ultimate transportation device: the RocketBeer.

I saw THE ROCKETEER movie in theaters when I was a small child. I even had a Rocketeer action figure. I never got to play the game. From the looks of it, I dodged a bullet 😆

Absolutely agree. And yet people still find things to complain and hate about. This episode feels like one from 8 years ago which is already instantly rewatchable. I do appreciate even the small inclusion of different camera angles like this; nothing too crazy, but really gives it a bit of life. We are so lucky he keeps giving us this content!

The SNES version of The Rocketeer is actually a port of a DOS game.
There is also a game that is loosely based on The Rocketeer. It is called Rocket Ranger.

This felt like a classic episode.
There was a nice calm backstory to the game at the beginning. Just hearing James explain stuff is satisfying. Then it slowly ramps up with more anger throughout.
I like it when a lot of the jokes are referencing how ridiculous the game mechanics would be if implemented in the setting of the franchise’s canon.
It doesn’t even bother me if most of the shots are just of the gameplay and the couch. For me, that’s where the heart of AVGN is.
I like how James has been moving back towards the more classic style of AVGN.
A blessed return honestly, he seems a little more like himself here.

I still can’t believe what a icon the AVGN is on UA-cam. The channel’s been around long enough to where the series has become timeless and synonyms with UA-cam. I wouldn’t be surprised if many video game review channels took inspiration from his reviews.

I've been an AVGN fan since day one. Recently I've felt that episodes we're getting more into being movie productions than the episodic review/ranting that we know and love. This episode brought back the satisfaction I felt in the early days. Thank you James and I look forward to your next endeavor.

One thing I love about coming back to AVGN videos is that I don't think I've ever disliked a single one. Like I don't think I've ever come to watch a new one and gone "ah man, the Nerd has kinda gotten stale after so many years"
I understand that your love of filmmaking has influenced a lot of your recent AVGN episodes, but sometimes, this traditional template feels like home. Episodes like this one are the ones I watch on repeat late at night. This feels like old school AVGN.

The SNES game is like that recent Star Wars game. You're a Jedi, but you spend the whole game climbing walls, running up and down ramps, solving puzzles.

I just finished rewatching all of the old classics, and I gotta say, you still got it James! This was a fun episode that felt classic in all the right ways. Keep on doing what you do best! You brought me so much joy in my life!
I remember renting the SNES version. We figured out the thing with the little screen pretty quick, and we had a turbo controller so all the shooting and flying sections were way easier. But we couldn't get past this next bit where a guy above you was dropping bombs and you had to dodge past them. The character just moved so slow that it seemed impossible.
Big step up from the recent episodes. Feels much more like a classic, pre-2014ish episode. Big fan of it. Whatever it is internally you decided to do/change, keep it up!
I actually played this game when it was new, of course I had THE POWER, which helped me finish the game. Wasn't that bad actually, but I almost didn't remember the SNES version. Overall, this episode had me rolling! Cheers James!
