The Cirrus X3 Rocket Pack went on to have appearances in other movies and tv shows. It was in an episode of VIP with Pamela Anderson. It also shows up in Star Wars The Last Jedi being worn by Maz Kanata during the 'union dispute' scene. In the film the X3 is a creation of Howard Hughes but in the comics it was created by Clark "Doc" Savage Jr. He was never mentioned by name but given his appearance in the comics along with Ham and Monk trying to recover the X3 from Peevy, it definitely is Doc and crew. Cliff however does not realize they are Monk and Ham and misidentifies them as two of Howard Hughes associates. The film version of the X3 is more closer to the old movie serials than the comic's version. The comic X3 was essentially just a single engine that looked a bit odd on the back of a person.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but apparently Disney IS seriously considering a reboot or sequel to this movie. They're talking about doing it with a girl. Yes, the girl will either replace Cliff Secord OR rescue him -- that's SOP for Disney and comics right now. They may or may not have already done a reimagined Rocketeer in comics. They talked about doing it with a black girl in the early 1940s which makes no sense within that frame of history. They barely let the Tuskegee Airmen fly in combat in the better frontline planes (P-51Cs, P-51Ds). IDW or Dynamite did a series of new Rocketeer stories after reprinting all the Rocketeer comics done by the series creator, Dave Stevens, but I take it that the new stories didn't sell that well since it's been since I've seen listing for Rocketeer comics. Stevens was not the most prolific comic book artist but his art was beautiful. He actually did quite a bit of storyboarding on movies and worked alongside Jim Steranko (a very big comic book legend) on Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's amazing what happens with the portrayal of history in film. They'll either portray things as more racist than they actually were OR they whitewash racism and pretend it never happened.
Thank you so so so much for putting this together! I adore this film and it has largely set the tone for my interests in life ever since I saw it as a kid: I am a qualified pilot, an engineer and I design & fly rockets too. Really, it set my imagination ablaze as a kid! Oh so overlooked, oh so well crafted and made with so much love you can just tell. Cheers Minty!
I loved the rocketeer and still do. When I heard Joe Johnston was directing Captain America and that it was going to be done period I knew marvel were going to take cap seriously because Joe did such an amazing job on the Rocketeer
I loved this movie as a kid and I still do today. I have read a few of the IDW Rocketeer comic books and I would love to read the originals written by Dave Stevens in the near future. Neville Sinclair was the performance that introduced me to Timothy Dalton, its one of my favorites of his next to James Bond. The musical score is highly underrated, it definatly evokes a sense of innocence and the period of the 1930's. James Horner was a tremendous talent and it is really sad he is no longer with us. Also despite never becoming a big star, Billy Campbell has had a pretty decent television career from what I have seen and heard. He was on the AMC show, The Killing for two seasons and many praised his work on it. I really wish that Disney gave this film a special edition on DVD/ Blu Ray. Due to it underperforming at the box office they never have. It defiantly deserves better thought. I really hope that this film is not rebooted, its not needed and the newer comic books are doing a fine job of telling new stories.
The iconic scene with the Spruce Goose model was something I didn't understand when everybody pointed out at that time. Then I saw Leonardo DiCaprio an aviator and understood.
It really does fly. Yah, I knew of him a bit before this movie, but first time I had some figure to refer to. When Lost premiered, I instantly went hey, Howard Hughes!
Love this movie. James Horner’s music is excellent and really compliments the movie well. The image of the Rocketeer on top of the observatory in front of the flag is so awesome and yes, like a lot of other have already posted, Jennifer Connelly looked absolutely stunning.
less than 9 months after Minty uploaded this, Disney revived The Rocketeer as a cartoon. Billy Campbell even returns to the role (sort of) playing the son Cliff Secord, who reluctantly passes on the jetpack to his daughter Kit after she discovers her grandfather's legendary identity
Minty, I admit that one of the things I enjoy about your videos is picking apart the bits where I disagree with you. Not this time. Every word you said about this movie is spot on. It's an underappreciated gem! I think the casting was perfect, but I would love to be able to peek into an alternate universe with some of the other casting options that were considered. Just a little brag - I'm a sci-fi convention geek, and made a steampunk Rocketeer costume that I'm terribly proud of. It even emits "smoke" from the nozzles!
Ian Simpson - That was an interesting movie. It was kind of like someone mashed together 'The Rocketeer' and Marvel's 'The Avengers'. Minty should definitely review it someday.
The gangster henchman lothar was actually based on a real Hollywood horror actor named Rondo Hatton. He was in films in the 1930s and 40s such as House of Horrors. His face looked like that due to a birth defect.
Oh good, someone else knew about Rondo! I'd just posted that Lothar's makeup was based on him. It was an amazing makeup job and a great performance/tribute to the man. =)
Was just about to post this. I didn't know this until a few years ago until I got a classic horror box set and saw him in as the Creeper in "The Brute Man".
And Dave Stevens was extremely well versed in the past, right down to the lingo used in his dialogue, something that Joe Johnston had to fight to keep in the film. Dave drew his character of Lothar based on Rondo Hatton ' s likeness, but Lothar only appeared on the last page of Rocketeer Adventure Magazine 2 from 1988. Lothar ' s actual story didn't get told in the comic books until a few years after the movie when Dave FINALLY finished and released Rocketeer Adventure Magazine 3.
Neville Sinclair's giant henchman *Lothar* is in the great *Rick Baker* makeup because he's made to appear as though he's being portrayed by 40s pulp character actor *Rondo Hatton* (who is indeed the spitting image of Lothar),
Really enjoyed the Rocketeer. Only problem I really have with it is that there's not enough time with the Rocketeer. But holy cow, would love to have seen Bill Paxton in the role.
@Lees Play List 77 absolutely! She stole the hearts of...let's see, carry the 2...oh, everyone! But here, the early 40s look of her, which is gorgeous enough for most actresses, is other worldly.
Everyone talking about Jennifer Connelly...... but let’s face it, she is probably the condiment that makes us want to try this movie once again occasionally. Her physical prototype is my top one when it comes to women. Her rear body shape mixed with her amazing hairstyle (in the fragment of seconds before Sinclair gets to talk to her for the first time), make her a goddess. She is just perfect. That magnetic and electrifying sight that she has, with an expression of “I’ll eat you when you expect it the least”. That woman was far beyond many other actresses of that time. A low profile goddess.
Wanted? I BUILT one because of this movie! Okay, it's actually a steampunk version of the Rocketeer that I made as a costume for sci-fi conventions, but still...
No he would refuse on principle because all these new cgi-fest Marvel films suck donkey balls. Horner worked on films that that weren't just shameless cash-ins.
So what you're saying is a movie that was already fully loaded had no bad casting choices. Fitting. But I do wish Jennifer Connoly was dressed up as Bettie Page. She could have pulled it off.
Nah. The only lady who could pull it off would by Dave Stevens' ex-wife, Brinke, who was the model for Betty in the comics and was a "scream queen" horror actress in the 80s and 90s.
One of my ultimate guilty pleasures. I have a blu Ray Steelbook copy of this film. I just loved the setting. The 30's was such a romantic era where imagination ran wild in a good way. I love the movie serials that made up the period, and Rocketeer captured that flavour. It's a shame that it didn't make enough money to justify the sequels from being made, but some of my favorite films just didn't appeal to the moviegoers at the time. This ranks along Monster Squad, Masters of the Universe and The Phantom in my personal list of guilty pleasures.
The early '90s was a great time for Hollywood adaptations for 1930's/1940's-era pulp heroes: The Rocketeer, Dick Tracy, the Phantom, The Shadow... All four of these films pulled off their adaptations very faithfully, while still being appropriate for family audiences. And not in dumbed-down, little-kiddish, kind-of way. Unlike that God-awful movie adaptation of the Green Hornet which was made in 2011.
It's a good movie for sure and Jennifer Connelly is gorgeous in it, her beauty matches well with the 1930' 40's and 50's look....her alone is worth watching this movie!!!
Minty!!!!!! I can't thank you enough for doing The Rocketeer!..this movie was incredible and I love it with every ounce of my soul. I had cup and the bendy figure, I also own two different Rocketeer figures. I have the reaction figure and more NeCa style Figure and love them both!
Here in the States, I had a Rocketeer comic w/ 3D glasses that included a cassette tape you could play while reading it. Very fond memory from back in the day. Thanks for covering this flick!
Oh, _The Shadow_ was the shit when I was that age. Still is--Every Halloween, I do a _31 Days of the Shadow_ at work, wherein I hit up UA-cam and pop on a Shadow radio play when I open or close. At one point I had all the figurines, and may still have the Thunder Cab. Also had the toys from _Super Mario Bros._ --Mario, in fact, became Moe Shrevnitz, the cab driver.
Thanks Minty! This film gave me one of the absolute best experiences in a theater I have ever had. When I feel down this is one of my go-to-for-a-pick-me-up feel great films. I like movies about flying anyway.
I thought the Rocketeer was awesome. It just came out at the wrong time period. It was a fun watch and a great story. Plus Jennifer Connelly is just a gorgeous woman to look at!
Thanks again, Minty. I appreciate you paying homage to this underappreciated 30s era super hero adventure movie. I agree that it was well done, but may have had too much competition at the time. I also think while a trilogy may have been interesting, it stands on its own merit.
I was just on the cusp of sticking my DVD copy of the Rocketeer on the tray, when I noticed you had uploaded this review. Take a bow and a half, Minty! James Horner was not the only Star Trek commonality associated with the Rocketeer. After I was given that DVD as a Christmas present, I took stock that 4 cast members have Star Trek connections. Leading man Billy Campbell appeared on Star Trek: the Next Generation as the title character of the “Outrageous Oconna” episode. Terry O’Quinn, who portrayed Howard Hughes, would materialize 5 years hence in the “Pegasus” episode. And, Tiny Ron Taylor (Lothar) & Max Grodenchick (Wilmer) would both recur frequently during Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
@@jediarco As a kid I saw her in Once Upon A Time In America, fancied her and just assumed as a child actress she'd be someone I'd never see in a movie again. Then..... She's still beautiful, but back then she was smoking hot! In Rocketeer, shes's like a live action Jessica Rabbit!
Trevor Decowski you just lied about your grandfather being in the military with the guy who played the Rocketeer nothing to do with the video just a fun fact.
BTW, the giant, mishapen henchman in the movie was a tribute to Rondo Hatton, an actor who suffered an actual bone disease and was relegated to playing monsters and henchmen in films of the '40s. The make-up looks just like him.
I recall that too. Flash Gordon, Captain Marvel and King of the Rocket Men were all shown at the Saturday Kids Matinee at Bridgeton Cross in Glasgow in 1970 or thereabouts. Every episode ended with a good old cliffhanger. No change really when you think of how they frame episodes of Preacher, Sons of Anarchy etc . Seems we still love a cliffhanger.
I've always thought this was passed over for being a kids movie. But, I've always loved it...thought it really was a very well done, exciting movie. ...and yes, Jennifer Connelly was to die for: She was Simply Stunning from beginning to end.
One of my all time faves and criminal underrated movies - I also love the two original comics from creater Dave Stevens (and some of the follow ups were rather good as well) - in fact the changes that were made in the movie are good ones, some stuff (especially in how Cliff got hold of the jetpack) is way better - this was even confirmed by Stevens - some other stuff that works well in comics just doesn't in movies - overall all changes were made 'in the spirit' of the source-material. Also much underrated: The score - brilliant! And yes, Connelly is a real bombshell in this movie - it took me years to realize that this is the same as the recent-day actor - think she looked healthier back in the day.
Saw at the Cinema first time out and loved it - Even though at the time I did actually think it was a RIP off of King of the Rocket men! which I saw here in the UK, as it was shown on Saturday morning tv, when Saturday Morning tv meant something! - Glad you mentioned King of the Rocket men too! - Your research is impeccable! Wondering if you'll do 10 things you didn't know about King of the Rocket men sometime? That'd be awesome!
This is still my favorite Disney movie! Disneyland use to have a little Rocketeer figure churning the popcorn in Tomorrowland but removed him. Now there’s only his costume in a store at California Adventure & his rocket pack on Mainstreet in Hollywood Studios in Fl
Bwahaha! Resembled Spottie from Super-Ted. That's the first time I've seen a reference to that show since watching it decades ago. Actually, you should do a video on Super-Ted.
I discovered the Rocketeer by chance while at the video store in the early nineties and has become one of those movies that I'm so glad I did. One of my favorite movies.

Really enjoyed the Rocketeer. Only problem I really have with it is that there's not enough time with the Rocketeer.
But holy cow, would love to have seen Bill Paxton in the role.
Emilio Estevez, Kurt Russell, Bill Paxton, and Kevin Costner were going to be The Rocketeer!? Wow, I'm impressed!😉😉😉
The Rocketeer is one of my favorite movies! It was epic when I saw it in theaters the first time!
Jennifer Connelly is a 12/10
I hate to be "that guy", but I disagree. Only because I think she's a 30/10. 😍🤩
@Lees Play List 77 absolutely! She stole the hearts of...let's see, carry the 2...oh, everyone! But here, the early 40s look of her, which is gorgeous enough for most actresses, is other worldly.
Yah, she really bent the needle.
A matter of fact after all these years Jennifer Connelly it still one of the sexiest women a life.
Who saw this as a kid and wanted a jetpack?
o/ ... still do
Who saw this as a kid and wanted Jennifer Connelly?
@@MrThriven I think many of us :)

Wanted? I BUILT one because of this movie! Okay, it's actually a steampunk version of the Rocketeer that I made as a costume for sci-fi conventions, but still...
One of James Horners very best scores
Good pick Minty. I wish they would still make movies in this old skool style sometimes.
I had the standee for the Rocketeer mounted on the ceiling of my “office” for years ...right above the Godzilla with the “launching 🤜 “ 🥰
An art deco delight.
An absolutely beautiful film from start to finish. I so much preferred this one to "Dick Tracy," mainly because Jennifer Connelly > Madonna. =)
@Jack Grattan Yup. 👍👍

This was my *FAVORITE* movie as a child and everyone I tried to talk to about it had never seen or heard of it. Thank you for this!!!!
If James Horner were alive today, he would have composed all the Marvel movies, with no complaints.
Shaine White
Word!
No he would refuse on principle because all these new cgi-fest Marvel films suck donkey balls. Horner worked on films that that weren't just shameless cash-ins.
I LOVE this movie! Every time I see the scene when he's flying in the clouds, chills run down my spine.
You realize, Minty, now you've committed yourself to doing The Phantom and The Shadow as well.
Hands down one of the best comic book adaptations ever!!! And a classic film in its own right! Ty minty!!!
One of my favorite movies of all time. Saw it 3 times in theater and own it today. Think I might watch it tonight!
One of my favorite lines is still "It matters to me! I may not make an honest buck, but I'm 100% American!"
The early '90s was a great time for Hollywood adaptations for 1930's/1940's-era pulp heroes:
The Rocketeer, Dick Tracy, the Phantom, The Shadow...
All four of these films pulled off their adaptations very faithfully, while still being appropriate for family audiences. And not in dumbed-down, little-kiddish, kind-of way.
Unlike that God-awful movie adaptation of the Green Hornet which was made in 2011.
And Darkman! It's interesting how, just as in the 30's, in the 90's, before the supers, came the pulps!
It's a good movie for sure and Jennifer Connelly is gorgeous in it, her beauty matches well with the 1930' 40's and 50's look....her alone is worth watching this movie!!!
Minty awesome as always.. Still waiting for Galaxy Quest
Minty!!!!!! I can't thank you enough for doing The Rocketeer!..this movie was incredible and I love it with every ounce of my soul. I had cup and the bendy figure, I also own two different Rocketeer figures. I have the reaction figure and more NeCa style Figure and love them both!
Re: Video Game.. The PC one was based off the movie.
Also, a couple of years ago, they did release a really nice Rocketeer action figure.
there was an snes game he didn’t talk about. He did the same thing in the dick Tracy vid and didn’t mention the mega drive game.
Here in the States, I had a Rocketeer comic w/ 3D glasses that included a cassette tape you could play while reading it. Very fond memory from back in the day. Thanks for covering this flick!
How about 10 things about "The Shadow"?
another amazing movie with a classy and unique look
Yes.
Hugely under rated film that deserves some attention . I double feature this with the Phantom .
@@BLThackrey The Phantom! Yes! Show me the power!
I truly love this channel. Fun facts presented in a calm, professional and fun way.
The highlight of the Rocketeer was Timothy Dalton,s death funny as hell
I never really thought of it being funny, but I sure thought it was cool.
Thanks again, Minty. I appreciate you paying homage to this underappreciated 30s era super hero adventure movie. I agree that it was well done, but may have had too much competition at the time. I also think while a trilogy may have been interesting, it stands on its own merit.
The best movie and comic plus I do the cosplay for it
I was just on the cusp of sticking my DVD copy of the Rocketeer on the tray, when I noticed you had uploaded this review.
Two words = Jennifer Connelly! OMG! So in love with her; in her prime during this movie.
See her in The Hot Spot (1990). You'll thank me.
@@davidjames579 Oh yeah! Saw that; very nice. Also Mulholland Falls. ;)
@@davidjames579 OMG, yes! She was in her prime in The Rocketeer.
I've always enjoyed watching The Rocketeer every now and again.
Excellent casting choices on this film. All three main characters are gorgeous and glamorous.
My grandfather went to military school with the Rocketeer. Nothing to do with the video, just thought that was a neat little fact
Trevor Decowski you just lied about your grandfather being in the military with the guy who played the Rocketeer nothing to do with the video just a fun fact.
@@televisedrevolution-vt6ds no it's true. Fork Union military school. My grandfather is a year older than Billy Campbell
Yes!! One of my most favorite movies of all time!! Thank you Minty!
As it turns out, the jet pack was invented by... John Locke!!! Holy shit, were back on the island again.
One of my favorites. Love the score too.
Please do "Dragon: The Bruce Lee story" next!
FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD UA-camR dish washa
I agreed. It’s a flawed movie, but quite good.
BTW, the giant, mishapen henchman in the movie was a tribute to Rondo Hatton, an actor who suffered an actual bone disease and was relegated to playing monsters and henchmen in films of the '40s. The make-up looks just like him.
One thing Minty, the Rocketeer isn't steampunk, it's Dieselpunk.
I would watch this movie over and over again as a kid, a real classic
i remember KING OF THE ROCKET MEN. it would always show him dying i action. then the next episode would show you how he escaped
Still one of my favorite films of the time. Especially liked the quote, how do I look? Like a good ordmeint. 😆
Cinemaware published an acclaimed “Rocket Ranger” video game on the Amiga in 1988 in which you fought against Nazis.
That was an awesome game. I had it on the Commodore 64.
As a kid when this came out, I recall seeing Rocketeer candy everywhere. It was like a long candy tube with a top-half action figure topping it.
Saw at the Cinema first time out and loved it - Even though at the time I did actually think it was a RIP off of King of the Rocket men! which I saw here in the UK, as it was shown on Saturday morning tv, when Saturday Morning tv meant something! -
Glad you mentioned King of the Rocket men too! - Your research is impeccable!
Wondering if you'll do 10 things you didn't know about King of the Rocket men sometime? That'd be awesome!
I'm glad they kept the look of the helmet in the film. It's one of my favourite movie props. It just like that art deco design.
"His career never Took Off." Oh Minty.
What a great classic adventure movie. I loved this as a kid, and I love it now.
The Dick Tracy looking gangster was based of a real actor called Rondo Hatton whose face was disfigured by gas during WW!.
He wasn't disfigured by gas. He had acromegaly, same as The Great Khali and (possibly) Abe Lincoln
@@tompadfoot3065 Lincoln is actually believed to have suffered Marfan Syndrome, which causes elongation rather than enlargement
This is still my favorite Disney movie!
Disneyland use to have a little Rocketeer figure churning the popcorn in Tomorrowland but removed him. Now there’s only his costume in a store at California Adventure & his rocket pack on Mainstreet in Hollywood Studios in Fl
If you haven’t done these: Wargames, Cloak & Dagger, and D.A.R.Y.L.
I remember being very excited by this movie as a kid. I haven't seen it since, but I do remember it fondly.
Great film, great review!!
Bwahaha! Resembled Spottie from Super-Ted. That's the first time I've seen a reference to that show since watching it decades ago. Actually, you should do a video on Super-Ted.
A truly underrated Great film. If you haven't seen it check it out😀👍

I used to have this toy as a kid. And this was one of my favorite movies growing up as a kid.
I concur...James Horner is the king!
@@samuelwilliams1619 It is indeed
