1955 Doc's freakout when he realizes Marty is still in that time is one of the best moments of the trilogy.
I think what most people miss on "Back to the Future Part III" is that despite the huge western homage and setting of the film, and how it just settles down into a slow pace for 1885, the film is basically a reflective and sentimental journey for the characters.
It doesn't have the hype and suspense of "Back to the Future Part I", nor the outrageous - yet brilliant - shocks, double-whammies, and mind-boggling plot twists of "Back to the Future Part II". Instead, "Back to the Future Part III" delivers a long, western-themed farewell for Marty, Doc, and the rest of the characters.
It is indeed the simplest and least dramatic of the three - there's no denying that. But if looked upon with the right attitude, one can really grow to love it. The whole hype and interest of Marty and Doc's time-traveling has waned, and that wistful remark where Doc says at the Town Festival how it's impressive that they're there to witness the clock dedication really hits home to me as the viewer, and Doc's weary, tired declaration that once they return to 1985 they'll destroy this infernal machine: "Traveling through time has become much too painful.". Everything in the film is very reflective... but it actually works in this case.
In one way or another, this happens to make "Back to the Future Part III" one of the most calm, restful movies/film finales a series could ever ask for. Perfect to watch before falling asleep... as I, myself, have done that many times! LOL
The only problem with that is, if Doc Brown had remained stuck in the past... I think it would have been harder for Gale and Zemeckis to convince Doc's fans to accept "Back to the Future - Part III" as being the end. I know that time-traveling train is a tricky thing to explain, but in the long run, by letting viewers at least know that Doc can come and go as he pleases, it took care of Doc's fans feeling like the story had to go on.
I simply love all movies as one. you cant really take them apart and only love one specific film. (even if there was no sequel planed back in 1985). Part 3 ist a really good conclusion. I love the dialogues and acting.

I agree...it's a very satisfying wrap up...especially all the references to part 2 (e.g., the flying Dolorean); finally getting to see the restored 1985 and Jennifer again, plus the whole "You're Fired"/Marty's drag race being resolved. There's more, like the For a Few Dollars gimmick with the bullet proof vest that was foreshadowed in part 2 when Biff was in the hot tub watching tv. And Doc coming back to get Einstein is so cool :)
For me the third installment is the best one,I fucking love Mad Dog Tannen in it he is funny yet menacing definitely the best of the Biffs,it was simple compared to the others but it made me feel the best when it finished.
Both Back to the Future sequels are great.

@@catguy4996 I agree; it's more sentimental (in a good way) and returns to the simplicity of staying mostly in one year of history. Still, the best goosebumps scene for me is in part 2, after Marty escapes Biff and Delorean gets struck by lightning. Marty says "there's only one man that can help me," and we return to the climax of Part 1 (and a twist of Marty running in the background).

It's amazing how many people found this movie weak as a kid and then gained appreciation for it as time marched on. I'm one of those people. lol
I find it hard to dislike anything about the whole trilogy. Each one works so well in different areas. We'll never see anything like BTTF again.

I went from "Not enough time traveling, uninteresting time period for time traveling, boring old biddy" to "Doc needs a babe badly that's a compromise between Marty's age and his own and Clara is a great addition to the team; A 2045 time travel would have been a disaster when 2015 already missed obvious marks several times with flying cars, phone booths, heavy Japanese cultural influence except for anime, and bright color fashion; The only other time period Marty could have visited other than 1885 would be visiting a teen Doc in the 1930s, with yet another alternative 1985 universe, something the BTTF computer game has did incredibly well, but it would take two more movies, so this one is a nice early wrap-up."

I agree, it’s so brilliant.
When I was a kid, *Back to the Future Part III* was my favorite of the trilogy. I wasn't really a western fan, but I enjoyed its humor, sense of adventure and Doc's romantic story-arc... it was very sweet and appealing. Now, as an adult, I can easily recognize that the original is objectively the best film of the trilogy. But I still have the softest spot for this one. I think it's the most overtly entertaining and good-natured film of the trilogy. It's just a fun movie all around.
For me, the trilogy would go...
1- *Back to the Future* ... A perfect 10 out of 10
2- *Back to the Future Part III* ... A near-perfect 9 out of 10
3- *Back to the Future Part II* ... A solid 7 out of 10
BTTF Part III is up there with Return of the Jedi, Last Crusade, Goldfinger, Return of the King, Prisoner of Azkaban, and Die Hard with a Vengeance as one of the best 3rd entries in movie series/franchise ever made.
Also The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Army of Darkness.

My all time favourite trilogy.
The TellTale video game is the closest thing to an actual sequel I think we're ever going to get. Marty goes back to the 1920s during prohibition and befriends Doc as a teenager, but accidentally causes him to fall in love with a really evil woman who wants to steer Doc away from his science obsession. Without that, the time machine wouldn't exist in the first place. The writing was very clever and polished, with lots of throwbacks to events in the movies. It's something worth checking out if you always wanted to see a 4th BTTF movie.

Your ending segment with Heuy Lewis and the News' Power of Love is a fine piece of editing. You paired the lyrics up with the scenes from the film very well.
Bloody useless I was just about to make the comment about how the song seems to fit part III even better than the original. In fact, the whole film is almost a case study in the power of love. Not only the bond of friendship between Marty and Doc, but the romance between Doc and Clara. Yes indeed, the power of love.

the reason he had futuristic design on the train is because they had been to the future before they visited Marty in 1985...it was evident when I saw it in the theatre when I was in high school...
This is a great review. I feel part 3 doesn't get as much love as it deserves. All three films are classics in my eyes, but 3 definitely tops 2 for having a grounded setting and more cohearent narrative.
I adore the train scenes because so rarely do we see actors on an actual moving train anymore, hell we barely see actual steam locomotives in film at all these days. Nowadays their always cheap studio built props that don't even look authentic. And for the actors, it's always a soundstage with CGI backdrops and you never really feel like the characters are actually there.
My friend Larry Jensen is an author of books about trains in movies. His most recent "Hollywoods Railroads: Volume Two: Sierra Railroad" goes into great detail on the "Back to the Future 3" train scenes and all the hundreds movies and shows the exact same locomotive and cars were in before said film.

I loved Part III. It has two of my favorite things in it; DeLoreans and old steam trains.
Ebert was needlessly nitpicky on this one.
It's almost like he manufactured his argument to play up his and Gene's conflict. I can't imagine Ebert really being that committed to arguing against a movie's tonal consistency.

I am a big fan of the Back to the Future trilogy. I have nothing but a warm spot for the first film, which had the perfect element of science fiction, comedy, and heart. I am also in the minority that enjoyed Part II, and loved it's corner into darker territory. I do agree that a little of the heart of the first film was missing in the second, which was why Back to the Future Part III was a worthy conclusion.
Retrospective review of Tombstone (1993) come on Oliver make it happen.
I think Part 3 is mainly perceived as a weaker film because the first two have a much tighter rhythm and pace. This one felt more relaxed with less urgency. The first two had pretty major problems that required Doc & Marty to act quickly to resolve them. In Part 3, they don't have much plot to deal with until the showdown with Buford and hijacking the train, which didn't require the critical accuracy of the lightning strike. The film just slows down too much instead of building momentum.
Yes, I did see it again and think this one is meant to be more enjoyed by adults than the first two. Loved it!
Wait. In the first movie, Marty said, "This sucker is nuclear!?!" and Doc said: "No! This sucker is eletrical!" meaning the car. So why does it need gasoline!?
marty and doc were talking about the flux capacitor, not the car. The Flux capacitor ran on plutonium which generated enough electricity for the flux capacitor to time travel.
Mrcool210 Yes, but for The flux capacitor to work, they need the car to movie at 88, which it won't do without gasoline, so, what the hell is eletrical, it was obvious Doc was reffering to the car as being electric.
When you put flash on camera, you can turn it on even if the camera is off. For flash to fire, it needs to be turned on (it has its on power source), and it needs, lets say a signal or a "boost" from camera. When you press a button to take a photo, flash gets the signal and fires from its own power source. Same here, flux capacitor has its own power, but it needs the velocity. Those two things combined create a portal, a jump. So Doc puts it on a car. Flux gives the power, car gives the speed. When car makes 88 mph, flux gets the signal and "fires".
Nuclear 'power' still just generates electricity. Doc even explains that he needs 1.21 gigawatts of power. This is roughly the same power output as a nuclear power station. That's why the Delorean in the first film runs on plutonium, because it's one of the only ways Doc could generate such huge power outputs.
At some point, Doc went forward and (probably when he had the hover conversion done) had the power plant replaced with the cold fusion generator, making the Delorean able to generate the power much more easily.
The car however still runs on regular petrol ('gas' in the US) in order to get up to speed because it's just a regular combustion engine. So no, Doc does not mean the car is electrical - he means the flux capacitor is electrical and this power is supplied by the plutonium power plant.

I always remember watching this in a Cinema while on holiday. I was absolutely busting for a piss but I didn't want to miss the ending so I held on like mad.
It ended and I did probably the stupidest half run half cross legged hobble ever.
I swear I was pissing for like 2 minutes, felt that long anyway.

Great wrap-up retrospective on these movies. I own them on DVD and love them. I have a dear friend who bears quite a resemblance to Mary Steenburgen. Loved this trilogy of retrospectives.
I personally found this my favorite film in the series. It was the first one I was introduced to at a very young age. This is the only western I ever enjoyed which combined with already a great story. To me the film is perfect and I actually have the rare Hot Wheels 1955 Delorean currently sitting on my layout. I try to make watching this film almost a tradition for me every other Friday based on my schedule. It seems that I am the odd man out seeing as how all my other friends like the first movie in the franchise. Everyone talks about the first two films. The first one for being the original and the second for creating the hover board revelation that we still haven't achieved somehow. Anyways, loving your content ;)
I've recently come back to your channel after a long absence due to the recent pandemic and I must say, your reviews has greatly improved since I last saw it. I really enjoy watching your content. A big part of what makes this movie so good is its sense of humor. It just is such a fun film.

This is the only one of the three I saw at the cinema (on my birthday no less) and I always loved it. As for the ending with the train I figured that with the luxury of time (they were in a rush to get back to future before Doc got shot) and the added assistance from Clara, who is shown to be very clever, that Doc would make the new time machine eventually (he has kids so it could have taken him years to construct it). We don't have the materials to make a time machine now so I can suspend disbelief for the joy of that final shot of the flying train which mirrors the final shot of the first film. I always like it if trilogies can bring back something from the first part as it makes it feel satisfying.
You forgot to mention the deleted scene where Tatten and his gang kills the sherffic and leaves his son to witness the whole thing. That scene was so dark and out of nowhere that it doesn't match the rest of the film.

I always mean to comment on every one of these videos but I'm at work 90% of the time I must reiterate how much I enjoy this series if retrospectives thank you so much for all the time you put into these I have already lost count on how many I have watched.
Bit of trivia for you - Mary Steenburgen’s Clara is a variation on her role in Nick “Wrath Of Khan” Meyer’s “Time After Time”, where she enjoys a present day romance with Malcolm McDowell’s HG Wells.
This is my favorite movie trilogy! I've watched these movies so many times for so many years and still watch them to this day. I remember when I saw part III on the big screen and I liked it a lot. It was the first and only bttf film I saw in the theatres. I'm glad this franchise stayed as a trilogy and ended on a high note. :)
He couldn fix the Delorian,but it would take him years.They only had one week to do it.
The train was probabily being built for many years,considering they even got 2 kids while the time-train was built.
Yep, Doc and Clara's kids are about six and eight years old when he comes back to fetch Einstein; the animated series picks up about two years after that.

I've been binge watching these retrospectives for the last 3 days Oliver and I have to say I love this series, it's far more superior to what other creators have done (that I have seen so far anyway). Watching this though brought back so many fond memories of how much I love this film series. Thanks so much for covering BTTF, it's one of those film series that always has a special place in everyones hearts, and I really envy those who have not seen or have no interest in the series. I have to say though, your choice to overlay The Power of Love into a montage over the 3 movies is so relevant to the overall subject of the series being Love and family. It would be fantastic if you tied all 3 reviews into 1 playlist though if you haven't already, especially with how you ended this video bud. Keep up the amazing work Ollie, thankyou!
yeah Part 2 used to be my favourite but over time i became less fond of it but its still great. Part 1 will always be the best.

Thanks for the review. I love this series and can always justify the ending with Doc using the time machine from the mine to get parts and put it back later. Also, he has the hoverboard to use for parts. Part 4 can just be the cartoon that was made with Doc raising his kids in the 'burbs.

Growing Part III was my least favorite of the series that I loved. But now as I am older I feel Part III trumps Part II. It is indeed a great story and I appreciate this fill much more at 29 than I did when I was a kid. Spot on assessment.
I liked BTF3 much more than part 2. The time travel paradoxes are put aside to enjoy a pretty good western adventure. Its still nowhere near as good as part 1, but its a lot better than part 2.
There were two deloreans in 1885, all they had to do was syphon the Delorean the Doc left in the cave for Marty...voila!
it would result in a paradox if they took that one because if they took it then it wouldn't be there for Marty to use in 1955.

It's not addressed in the film, but Doc would likely have advised against messing with the Delorean he left in the cave. He'd already sealed it up, and breaking it open again risked it being discovered before Marty and 1955 Doc could retrieve it. There's also the problem that they had blown a key part of the Delorean's fuel system trying to use spirits to run it, and they didn't have that time as Doc was getting shot in only a few days.
I did like the little detail that the lightning strike not only blew a key part of the time circuits requiring 1955 doc to fix, but it destroyed the flying circuits. If they could've flown it like in Part II, most of Part III wouldn't have happened!

Hello Carl, thank you for expressing your thoughts on my videos and for subscribing. yeah i do frequently use Siskel and Ebert. I often use them to show all media related to the movie from the time. There are many reviews which i don't use them. Some viewers love watching the old siskel and ebert and some don't. I can't please everyone! lol
When I was a kid I would only watch part 3 on Sunday afternoons because it just had a Sunday afternoon feel to it.
This was the first one I saw and remembered. My family had taped its broadcast, and I watched it over and over again (with hilarious censorship at times, like Marty saying "He's an idiot" when his mouth clearly said "asshole"). I then saw Part II (also taped from the broadcast) and finished watching the films with Part I (on a VHS I found at Goodwill). Overall, my favorite is STILL Part II to this day. I love the more adventurous feel to it as opposed to the more romantic tones of the first and third films, and it's a great story involving the dangers of time travel and what somebody must do to fix their mistakes without being detected.
Don't get me wrong. I LOVE period films, and the other movies clearly put more focus on that...but the story of Part II is the most exciting for me.
Thanks for this Oliver. I was 12 years old when I saw this in the theater and it became my favorite of the 3. Part 2 left me wanting more and this third and final chapter was perfect.

I can appreciate the 3rd installment because I felt it truly cemented Doc and Marty’s friendship. The scene at the end feels special due to the fact that their time together is up, but they will forever remain a huge part of each other’s lives.
Aside from all the paradoxes, the big hole for BTTF3 was Doc saying petrol didn't exist in 1885, when it did and was readily available.
The issue is that gasoline is a by-product of kerosene, which was manufactured in HUGE quantities in the 1800's to fuel lamps Etc in a pre electricity America. they just dumped the gasoline as it was worthless to them.
So Doc would have known the potential of gasoline, even if the manufacturers didn't. So could have gotten tons of the stuff cheaply.
Perhaps but would he have the proper machinery necessary to refine it into the right octane level suitable for the DeLorean's regular unleaded engine?

The producer Bob Gale said in the DVD commentary that it was a mistake casting Lea Thompson as Marty's ancestor.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the part where Tannin spins his revolver back and forth like a pro gunslinger and then holsters it as a memorable moment.
I like it because they hold on the shot long enough to let the audience know it had been Tom Wilson spinning the gun. It’s nice to see the director give an actor a moment like that when they have been playing a goofball villain for a year+
My personal favourite entry, clearly ahead of "1" (1985), and slightly ahead of Part 2. Indeed, this trilogy is one of a few where each subsequent entry IMPROVES on each preceding one.

Not many people talk about Part 3, I don't know why, it's just as good as the first two films. Thomas Wilson was definitely the standout actor here, playing Buford Tannen. Also the scene where Marty does the Michael Jackson dance always makes me laugh.
Mary had also been in Time After Time w/ Malcolm McDowell, which adds a twist to her role in BTTF3 because of the H.G. Wells connection. Please do a review of Time After Time soon.
*correction: there is only a connection because of time travel, as Part 3 isn't connected to H.G. Wells, but is connected to Jules Verne.

I recently rewatched all three movies and I realized how much better the original was than the sequels, but I also realized how much better Part III is than I thought it was too

Slight correction: the ripped fuel line didn't force him to hide the DeLorean and walk to town, that was the plan from the beginning because he obviously can't parade it into town and have everyone see it! He backed it into the cave he was supposed to in the first place, and it was only then that he pulled the indian arrow out of the car, ripping the fuel line in the process.
Also, creating the time machine out of the locomotive, while a bit too flashy if you wanna be discreet which he was always stressing, isn't that unthinkable - the reason they were struggling with the DeLorean was because it came out of the blue - he had planned to never leave, and suddenly he had only 5 days to come up with something before he was shot by Buford. Once Buford wasn't a threat anymore, he had all the time in the world to figure something out - I mean, he had 2 kids that were several years old already, we have no idea how long it took for him to put the time travelling locomotive together, no contradiction!
The key with the train is he says he's already been the future with it. That's why it works looking so stunning :)...you're right all 3 of them are really good movies and it's one of the best theologies made. And ivecalways appreciated part 2 alot too.
