Can you please talk about the history of El Zorro?
As an oldster who first became a fan of the character in 1966 Kato was never The Hornet's sidekick. He was always seen by us kids as an equal partner. Bruce Lee's performance elevated him in our eyes.
Facts
absolutely correct! Kato wasn't anyone's sidekick, and he certainly wasn't another version of Robin. He was the Green Hornets Aid and equal Partner period.
Don't forget that it was Kato who invented the gas gun and helped design the Black Beauty (at least that's what came across in the 1940's movie serials).
S/o to Bruce Lee, the only man Batman didn’t want to test.
DUMB
Rip Bruce Lee 1940- 1973 age 32 and son Brandon Lee 1965 - 1993 age 28
Burt ward pissed his tights when he found out he was scripted to win against Bruce Lee and lee was pissed
Why not type shout-out
I stopped watching this video when i heard Kato was Samurai and not a gung fu practitioner like Bruce Lee's Kato
One thing that wasn't mentioned about the Green Hornet that made it so popular was that the he was wanted by both the police and the mob. In order to be effective with his crusade, He portayed himself to be a mob boss in order to get close to gangs, racketeers, crime lords, and other criminals. Because of that reputation, he was also wanted by the police.
That's right! I'd forgotten that. Right on point. That TV series was top shelf way back in the day. I hope someone can bring it to the screen (large or small) and do it some true justice. Not like that crap pile Rogan put out
When I was still in high school, I remember reading a collection of Green Hornet issues from Dark Horse Comic's run of the character and instantly falling in love with the character. It really opened my eyes to the idea of interesting superheroes that exist beyond the mainstream companies like Marvel and DC.
EDIT: Now that I think about it, it might have been Dynamite's 2010 run. Whoops!
GH was never property of Dark Horse. You might been thinking of Now comics
I want to see Green Hornet make a comeback in other media. Whether it’s a live action tv series or movie, these characters shouldn’t be shelved any longer.
The biggest problem I see with GH is because of the comic book-era movies have made villains “god-like” or over the top. GH really never had a world-threat or even city threat. Even in the books. There were 1 or 2 masked villains such as Johnny Dollar, but it seem there own family members were his biggest threat such as the Black Hornet or Crimson Wasp.
Not only that, have Green Hornet be made by atudios that genuinely want to make a good adaptation of the characters and story.
I read something not terribly long ago that said someone had bought the rights to the Green Hornet and planned to do a movie that actually did justice to the characters more in the traditional sense, perhaps like the tv series.
The Hornet and his irreplaceable companion confident are severely underrated.
Like The Shadow, The Green Hornet is also one of the great classics. Great to see him get covered on this channel
DUMB
I wish you had mentioned the GREEN HORNET movie serials of the 1940's: THE GREEN HORNET (1940) starring Gordon Jones as Britt Reid/The Green Hornet (with the voice of Al Hodge, the voice of the radio Green Hornet, dubbed into the film for the on-screen Green Hornet) and Keye Luke as Kato and THE GREEN HORNET STRIKES AGAIN! (1940) with Warren Hull as Britt Reid/The Green Hornet and Keye Luke again as Kato. Both serials also starred Anne Nagel as Lenore Case and Wade Boteler as Mike Axford.
Bro I watched Green Hornet movie so many times and watched re runs of the 60’s show and read some of the comics. Man there needs to be a reboot show or movie of this character who else agrees?
Absolutely agree, Green Hornet and Kato are so awesome and they deserve more respect and spotlight. They must return to the big screens.
I love these pulp heros! My dad and I used to love listening to “The Whistler” radio show ( a cd of it since it was early 2000s instead of when it was debuted over 80 years before)
My favorite comic as a kid was the re-telling of the green hornet that ur talking about through Dynamite. So glad to see it being talked about
Green Hornet is hands down my favorite pulp hero next to the shadow! I really want to see a crossover comic between Green Hornet and Kato vs Green Arrow and Speedy
I used to watch the Green Hornet show every morning before school. It was SOOOO GOOOD!!!
"Clayton Reid" was a great nod to actor Clayton Moore, who played the Lone Ranger in the TV series! 😊❤
I didn't know the Green Hornet was related to The Long Ranger that's cool
always has been one of my favorite characters, love u guys talk about him!
Old school Green Hornet 66 fan here. Thanks for covering Mr Reid and company. The Phantom, Shadow, & Green Hornet deserve good movie versions. But people are stupid and wouldn't understand. Great channel 👍
I really want a reboot of this hero
Seth rogen's Green hornet live action movie is my number 1 favourite movie of all time, im so glad variant comics is exploring the comic
WHAT??? Seth Rogan should have never played The Green Hornet!! I was so disappointed with that movie. The only thing that was good about the movie was Kato! It was a travesty!
That movie was comedic trash.
Honestly I can see an adaption of the year One story as it easily explains how and why they got to that point, and then you can just do the other storys.
Honestly I hope we get to see the Green Hornet come back on the big screen ot maby even television especially since right now were in a superhero fatigue and need something new and different, and it could be more interesting as a time peace but it can probably work in modern day too.
To all who read this have a WONDERFUL HEALTHY life and a HAPPY NEW YEAR. R.I.P. to all who have passed.
MANNNNN I love y'all's channel
happy new year arris and variant teams!!Thanks for making 2022 better and I really appreciate it
I love the Green Hornet, I hope to see more of these episodes, maybe do an episode on The Spider?
There is one hero you have got to do it's the Spirit, you can't do the Shadow and Green Hornet without the Spirit.
Been waiting for this one!!!
DUMB
That was a great overview but in the recommended reading you should have recommended LISTENING to the classic radio show. Great stuff, loved it for decades.
Agree 100%
I’m so proud of you aris
Green Hornet is one of my Favorites. I love the premise of a good guy playing a bad guy.
Now comics were and are the best GH comics ever
Got recommended this right under a recommended video of the 60s TV special haha
I wish that you had mentioned the Lone Ranger/Green Hornet: Champions of Justice miniseries, by Michael Uslan and Giovanni Timpano. It has John Reid surviving into the 1930s, and Britt making his Green Hornet mask from the same vest as the Ranger made his.
Hot take: the Seth Rogan green hornet movie was actually decent and severely underrated.
Can you do history of Alfred Pennyworth, Batwing, Flame Bird, Batwoman, Azrael, Signal(Duke Thomas), Bluebird, Stephanie Brown and Carrie Kelly?
...oh & by the way:
"THANK YOU" for all the previous episodes on the Shadow, the Phantom, the Lone Ranger & now the Green Hornet.
I used to watch The Green Hornet when I was 15 back I 1965/66. Enrolled in Chicago Judo and Karate Center because there was only 1 Gung Fu school, too far away. Historically in America, Kati started out Japanese. Then after Pearl Harbor attack and Japanese were unpopular, his character became Filipino. Then he became Chinese, but still retained the Japanese name - Kato.
this back story is great - when given the full story of Britt Reed and how he saved Kato - it makes him a more compelling character than the '66 TV show, wherein Green Hornet was a stiff and Kato was the real hero.
the 2011 movie made me love the whole The Green Hornet stories 🔥👍🥰❤️
I wouldn't say it was a good movie - I like Seth Rogen but at that point in his career he was definitely miscast. But damn was the film's Black Beauty car awesome.
I have a record with 2 episode of the Green Hornet and The Shadow radio plays. Absolutely love these characters. Would love to see Pulp Heroes revival. Green Hornet, Shadow, and The Spider deserve a resurrection!
Brilliant!!! Thank you!!!! 🙏
As always thank you so very much for the video.
I hope you're going to do Doc Savage and The Avenger!
Green Hornet & Kato meeting Batman & Robin deserves a movie
The pulp figure I am most looking forward to is Doc Savage. Many of his qualities were incorporated into Superman. But I read many of the pulp Doc Savage books when I was a kid. But as for Green Hornet, my understanding is that Britt became the Green Hornet while his father was still alive, at least in the radio show. I heard a program where his father discovered Britt was the Green Hornet. One of the more interesting pieces of trivia from the crossover between Batman and Green Hornet in 1966 is that Burt Ward fought Bruce Lee to a draw. I am not sure if that could be said of any other actor. Even Chuck Norris lost! That was to Bruce Lee of course. I have no idea if Brad Pitt beating up Bruce Lee in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is based on a true event or not. But I can't recall a movie or TV fight where Bruce Lee didn't win. But maybe there is a Kung Fu or JKD scholar out there that knows more than I do.
That Brad Pitt fight was made up and absolutely not true. As for Robin Burt Ward, he was originally supposed to win over Bruce Lee's Kato, but, Bruce refused cause not only was he a real legit fighter, but, his character was also the much better fighter than Robin. So, they changed it to a draw and Bruce actually scared Burt by pretending that he was really about to beat him.
What? I fell in love with Green Hornets thanks to 2011 Film
Sad Fun Fact: when ever Jeopardy does a comic book question series they ALWAYS use the same Green Hornet cover and no one ever answers it!!
Speaking of the shadow my great grandfather was a huge fan of the radio show he was never interrupted when he was listening to it on the radio.
Please do History of Zorro!
Classic duo
The Blue Morpho is a great homage in The Venture Bros.
Embrace Pulp cause it rules!.
The Green Hornet is so underrated. I wish a really talented director would do something with the character.
Wow, you crammed a lot of information into a short video. It was fabulous, thank you! And I learned a lot.
I was a fan of the 1966 “Green Hornet” TV series. Although it was produced by William Dozier, it fortunately didn’t copy the tone of his “Batman” series. (I know Dozier’s opening narration by heart.) Perhaps the serious style disappointed “Batman” fans; pity it lasted only one year. But then, “Batman” lasted only two. Van Williams and Bruce Lee were magnificent!
On a side note: track down a rendition of the TV theme performed by Tero Lindberg, a trumpeter from Finland. Simply wonderful!
I’m glad you treated Seth Rogen’s film with the contempt it deserves. To this day, it makes me furious - alongside Disney’s “Lone Ranger” fiasco. I never found Rogen appealing as a comedian; as a superhero, forget it!
This is the one I've been waiting for
Used to love watching the show on the Sci-Fi channel back in the 90's on our satellite dish
I loved rogans take sorry
Can you do the history of ghost (dark horse) judge dredd and zorro
Facts
El Avispón Verde esta infravalorado es un gran heroe junto a su gran compañero Kato
Esperemos que la nueva película que esta haciendo Universal este al nivel de la serie de los 60s
The Last Phantom,The Shadow:Year One and The Green Hornet:Year One is three of the best comic reboots for pulp heroes. But I don't know why Hollywood hasn't brought back these pulp heroes to the big screen instead of pumping out crap like THOR:Love&Thunder and SHE-HULK.
I agree!!!!!!!!
When are you going to do history of JSA member Cyclone along with DC Sabbac since he's the main Villain of the Black_Adam movie?
Yeah, Cyclone is also underrated along with Spider-Girl (Anya Corazon).
@@otakumarcus agreed!!!
I wish they had made an animated series of Green Hornet.
I would like to see a review of Doc Savage and the Avenger.
You either clicked on this video because your a fan of these
Comics or because your a variant comics fan
DUMB
BOTH.😃
I clicked because I was a fan of the Green Hornet radio program, which hardly got mentioned.
Nah i clicked because of the movie
It should be noted that Kato's country of origin has changed throughout the years. Kato was both Vietnamese and Korean, and apparently now Japanese.
Oddly enough, Kato was never Chinese.
Kato on the radio show was Japanese until WW2, then they suddenly referred to him as his “faithful Filipino valet”
@@TheRealDSword Yep. Makes sense.
Originally Kato was Japanese, but when WWII came around the nationality was changed in the radio series to Filipino (in one of the 1990's comic book series, he reveals that Britt officially listed him as Filipino in order to protect him from internment). In the 1940's movie serials, he said he was Korean. I don't recall seeing/hearing anywhere that he was supposed to be Vietnamese.
What do you think is the best thing about the Green Hornet and his Sidekick in the comics compared to the one who appeared in their 1966 TV Show and their 2011 movie?
Definitely would be cool to see the green hornet in a series or movie weather live action or animated would be cool to see or even do a radio show like they are doing with Batman
Never knew Green Hornet started in my hometown, that's cool.
Do history of ghost (dark horse) judge dredd vamperelle Cassie hack and zorro
It would be great if someone spent more time bridging the Lone Ranger and the green Hornet. It would have been good to see how the Lone Ranger progressed, also Tonto and what Dan Reid did between running with the Lone Ranger and owning the newspaper. Rogan’s Green Hornet slighted Dan Reid. A Phantom style succession could bridge the generations by having the Green Hornet be a legacy (passing down generations from father to son. I feel people might enjoy finding out the fate of the Lone Ranger and Tonto.
I have all three of the green hornet short story collections moon stone put out . I forget witch book it’s in but seem to remember one of the stories involves Kateo trying doc savages daughter .
And that doc savage knows who the green hornet is and approves of his methods. And that the famous crime college. Where doc savage would send the bad guys he captured to be re-educated.
Still exists in Brit’s time .
I loved the Green Hornet TV show! I also had a few episodes of his radio show on cassette.
I think he would definitely have fans today, if handled properly.
The best part of Seth Rogan's terrible movie was Kato!
Forget about the Seth Rogan film; try the two 1940's GREEN HORNET movie serials: THE GREEN HORNET & THE GREEN HORNET STRIKES AGAIN! (15 chapters each), both available on DVD.
@variant
So cool. Think you can cover Doc Savage and/or The Spirit in the future?
Actually I'm a big fan of that Green Hornet movie
Okay
Bruce Lee teaming up with Batman
Like
Yes 🔥 👍 🔥 🔥 🔥
For me I found out about the character of the green hornet from the 2011 movie which I haven't even finished watching cause I slept midway through the film but who knows I may revisit it again
I liked the Seth Rogen Green Hornet and thought is was pretty badass
So I know this is a controversial opinion but I actually liked the Green Hornet movie, I’d never read the comics and I thought it was fun, me and my friends still quote it all the time
I also like the green hornet movie very funny and very different from the comic
and don't forget the iconic "Hornet Sting" weapon , which to me at least is a type of sound wave sonic disruptor which projects a high pitch sound in a single direction and results in shattering or moving etc anything in its path. In the 66 tv crossover episode Batman referred to it as a " gruesome gizmo" I think its a technological marvel.
The Hornet Sting was only used in the TV series and IMO was only created because the 60's TV action shows and films loved gadgets like that; the gas gun (which has undergone a number of changes over the years) has been around since the beginning.
true enough, but I remain a fan of the Sting regardless@@tonyscheinman3538
This might be the first episode I’ve seen where I have the shirt you’re wearing lmao
Finally!!!!
It seems like Green Hornet should've been the sidekick 😂
Bruce Mother freaking Lee!!! That was awesome
I thought the movie was alright. Not great, but it did bring the character back in the mainstream
For some unknown reason, I loved the Green Hornet series… I guess it was mostly cos of Kato. Was one of the few times I saw real Kung Fu on any screen. Btw I also loved Ip Man, the movie.
You forgot the Hornet’s Stinger cane which can shake a safes’ door off its hinges.
Growing up in the 60's the Green Hornet was a big hit . But, in the TV series you didn't know that originally Kato was Japanese because he was portrayed by Bruce Lee who was Chinese.
Green Hornet Movie Needs a Reboot Like "Batman Begin".
I remember watching that Batman & Robin rerun Episode wondering how the heck Robin is holding his own against Bruce Freakin Lee in their fight scene, especially if Batman is the only training Robin ever had, how was he able to hang with a dude who was a Black Belt!
even tho the movie took a way different turn, i like it, i see now that the comic is better
Green hornet circa 1940s had 2major full blown movie serials. With KEYE LUKE (Charlie Chans #1 son- king full tv series “master and Mr.Wong as well as in gremlins ) as KATO
3:09 "Compostition"
I’m Surprised nobody talks about some of Green Hornet’s villains like his Arch Enemy Black Hornet, The son of a yakuza boss who was the only villain to kill Britt Reid in the books.
Could you do a Kato episode? He is so interesting and I wish I knew more
My mom introduced me to Green Hornet and the Lone Ranger
Personally, I'm a big fan of Amy Chu's Green Hornet miniseries from a few years back
the movie was pretty good
Hey I liked that Seth Rogan movie
Legend of the fist 2010. Donnie ten as KATO.
I hope you will also make a video called 'History of the Spirit' by Will Eisner.
